Driving my 2002 zx5 Ford Focus around pittsburgh, with less than a 1/4 tank the engine started stuttering. Then the car stalled. I turned it back on and drove about a 1/4 mile when it started stuttering and shaking pretty bad again. When I tried to accelerate, there was no power and the engine stalled again. I waited a little before turning it back on. It did the same thing twice more; once it stalled when I was doing a left turn at a busy traffic intersection and the other while driving down a crowded avenue. Fortunately I was able to make the 2-hour trip back home without any incidents. I took it to the Ford dealership in my town and they told me they needed to replace the fuel pump, fuel filter and also perform a fuel flush. The total cost is roughly $600. 00. I have been looking in the internet and there is a history of failures with the fuel delivery module on 2000-2001 Focus. Ford has claimed that the problem was solved in 2002. My bumper-to-bumper warranty expired this past January and the dealership says that since my car is 2002 the extended coverage program 03n01 does not apply in my case, thus I have to pay for the repairs. I disagree and I do not feel that the cost should be my responsibility. My car shows all the symptoms described on the 03n01 document, which is a quality issue that Ford should have resolved and clearly has not. It is unsafe driving a car that can stall without warning leaving the driver stuck in a dangerous situation.
While pumping gasoline at the gas station the gasoline splashed on the consumer. He was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the fuel neck hose needed to be replaced.

No crashes or injuries, however ther could have been since the car stalled several times while my wife was driving it. Some months ago the "check fuel cap" light appeared. This had never been a problem, as I always turn the cap several times after fueling. I had a local auto parts store reset the light. This happened again so I switched gas caps with the other 2001 Focus I own. The light came on again, followed by a "check engine" light. When I had the auto parst store check it before resetting the lights their readout stated "large vacuum leak". Since the car ran ok and there was no noticeable drop in fuel economy, I felt there was no problem, until my wife drove it and came back very upset that it had stalled several times and she had to use the gas as well as the brake to get home. Upon taking it to the dealership, I was advised that there was a leak in the fuel filler neck and that the part as well as the $30 fuel cap needed replaced at a cost of over $350. I explained the filler cap switch (the other Focus has not had the problem since it was built in michigan and not mexice) and they only replaced the fuel filler neck to the tune of $324. 65 while this vehicle has 60,000 miles on it I do not feel that this was a cost that I should have absorbed.

Smelled fuel strong smell after parking the vehicle overnight. Unsuccessfully attempted to start resulting in fuel spraying from the top of the fuel tank over underside of vehicle .
In the last 6 months I've owned this vehicle I cannot let it go below a quarter tank or the vehicle acts like it's running out of gas. I've replaced the fuel filter and problem still occurs. Dealer wants to charge to tell me whats wrong but I feel this is a defect from Ford as I've researched and found several other complaints that are the same. Hoping for a recall. . . . . .
Starting at about 39,000 miles (October, 2002), whenever my car had a quarter tank or less of gas, the car would start choking and feel like it was going to stall. If I stopped and let the car sit for a few minutes, it would be ok for a few minutes and then it would happen again. This continued after I had the fuel filter replaced, and a mechanic couldn't figure out the problem. It has happened at many speeds, but most often while on the freeway. Today, at 49,000 miles, I have more than half a tank of gas, going about 35 mph, and the same thing happened.
Fuel filler hose has cracked, and cause fuel to leak out while driving. Dealer notified.
Owner noticed a puddle underneath vehicle after parking for several hours. Gas tank was leaking. Fuel had leaked all over the exhaust pipe, and other areas underneath. The vehicle stalled while driving on the highway three times. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and replaced fuel injection system ,the entire gas tank and fuel delivery system but the problem still occurred.
Consumer states fuel fill door snapped off in his hand, dealer states it is not a covered item, and to replace it will cost over $100. 00.
Consumer stated the gas cap was difficult to open, the dealer replaced the gas cap.
Consumer stated there was a roaring and grinding noise coming from the front wheels, dealership was aware of problem. Consumer stated the fuel cap was loose and not fully installed which caused the check engine service light to come on, front and rear brakes are noisy upon application and there is a vibration when braking.
The consumer complained about a vehicle speed control problem. This problem has been occurring since the consumer purchased the vehicle on March 1, 2000. The consumer took vehicle to dealer, and they told her there was no problem. There is NHTSA recall 99v346000 on this issue for the 2000 Ford . Focus zx3. The consumer owns a zts 2000 Ford Focus, which is not included in the recall. Also, there is a fuel system problem. Vehicle experiences hesitation, loss of power, surging, and dyeing this problem first started on June 1, 2004. When the consumer took vehicle to a dealership for repairs they told her they thought it was the filter in the fuel tank. There is NHTSA recall campaign 03v482000. The dealership told her that this vehicle is not included in the recall because it is a zts.
