5 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 11/06/2017

My van has a problem with water, that is when it rains the vehicle starts having problems with several components. (ie engine misfire, transmission fails to shift properly, door looks refuse to operate properly, among other weird things) this happens every time it rains. The problem as I have being able to trace it, is that the water that comes off the front windshield and into the plastic that covers the cowl area ( where the wipers are) drips on to the main electric wire harness connection that comes from the inside of the car and connects to the engine bay wire harness. As the wire harness connector gets wet, the vehicle starts acting up. I took the van to my mechanic but he was unable to find a problem, it was dry. I took the vehicle to a Ford dealer and, to my surprise, they knew about the problem but told me I had to pay the repair because its covered on a technical service bulletin (TSB 06-14-10) but its not a recall. How can this not be a recall when the van is going along well and as soon as it starts raining, I start having drive ability issues, transmissions starts acting up, engine starts acting up, some times stalls, in general I have a vehicle that appears to be "allergic to water. " this issue happens any time it stars raining heavily whether on the highway or city street or my driveway for that matter, if its raining I have to take my wife's car because if not I know will have to be dealing with an uncooperative vehicle. Ps. I put a date on the "when did this happen" field but this is an ongoing issue.

11 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 08/08/2015

My car has spent 10 days at Ford to be serviced after having the safety recall service for the torque converter performed. The vehicle was behaving unpredictably, sometimes stalling out while idled, stalling out while in motion, sometimes idling with high or low rpms. The dealership took it back in to check the torque converter, they then said it wasn't the torque converter but the throttle body, they then cleaned that and said it's not the throttle body, it's the pcm. The pcm is taking on water from a flawed design of the above pcm where water is retained and eventually leaks on to the connector. This of course is not covered by Ford, and can cost up to $1200 to replace. This issue creates a number of different symptoms making it hard to identify the origin of the problem. Causing extended stays for maintenance. This should be rectified by Ford and not it's customers as there's no way this flaw can be caused by user error, it's a design flaw that should not exist.

12 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 07/10/2015

Started sputtering, jerking, and stalling pcm was wet causing all kinds of havic lost power going into a turn and almost went into a ditch Ford needs to recall this ongoing problem and get it fixed before something major happens alot of people are complaining and Ford knows it is there fault and they have a problem but refuses to take care of it.

The technician diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 126,486.

15 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 02/27/2015

I went through an automatic car wash around 315pm. The van was driving fine up to this point. Immediately after I left the carwash, the van started acting like it was going to stall out and the engine light was blinking. I've had one other situation like this with this van when we went away for a weekend and it rained a lot where we were staying. The van acted like it was going to stall but we had no idea why. I went online to see if anyone else had problems with their van that was attributed to water. I was shocked to see how many others have had the same thing happen. I also found an investigation that stated there is a defect and it's a safety concern but that they weren't going to issue any recalls at this time because there haven't been enough complaints. The diagnosis from the Ford dealership is as follows-water has leaked into the pcm. They would need to clean that out and seal it so water can't leak into it anymore. Water has also leaked into my spark plugs and corroded them. They would need to replace the spark plugs and wiring. Water has also leaked into my fuel lines so they want to clean out my fuel line. All of this for over $700. 00. When I contacted Ford motors because this happened due to a manufacturing defect, they told me that they can't help me because there aren't any recalls. I can't say I'm surprised by that since they haven't taken responsibility for this defect with others and don't sound like they ever will. I'm not paying Ford to fix it because this isn't normal wear and tear and it's not caused by anything that I have done. I'm going to take my chances with the vehicle while I try to pursue this another way. I no longer feel safe in my van and will not be transporting my children in it until something is done about this issue.

16 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 07/17/2014

Driving at approximately 35mph the vehicle stalled out and lost all power (engine running smooth before this). Fortunately was able to safely coast to side of road. After short while able to restart van and drive short distance. Stall repeated and had to coast to side of road again. Again able to restart and get home (less than a mile). Had heavy rain day before, research has revealed this to be a very common problem with this vehicle and is most likely water leak onto pmc. This is a safety hazard that needs to be addressed, this could have happened while towing camper in two weeks with family on highway.

17 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 07/12/2014

I just purchased a 2004 Ford Freestar from a private seller and I was getting the vehicle ready for inspection and subsequently tag by replacing front and rear brakes, tie end rod and tires. On highway 495 heading back to mechanic shop, the engine cutting off without warning and vehicle stalled and engine stopped running on lane next to fastest lane and many vehicles behind me kept blowing horns and missed hitting me at last minute as this happened suddenly on busiest highway. End of report.

18 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 07/05/2014

This has happened several time over last year or so that I have owned this vehicle. When driving down highway and it starts to rain cars sputters and seems to loose power. Twice it has stalled on me going 55 miles an hour on highway and have had to try and coast to side of road in traffic with people beeping with loss of steering. Luckily both times after a few mins the vehicle started again and was able to make it home. Have changed wires and plugs, runs fines in dry weather but still stutters and tries to stall when its wet out or rains! very dangerous and wont let wife take kids out when it rains in fear they will get stuck somewhere.

19 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 06/11/2014

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the check engine and trans axle lights illuminated on the instrument panel. Immediately after, the vehicle stalled and was not able to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

20 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 05/27/2014

After wet weather the night before, vehicle running rough (to the point of near stall), hesitating to burn fuel properly to get up to speed and not shifting properly. Vehicle was then parked, re-started and acted normally. Within the past week, each day after rain the car reproduces this issue and only after exposure to rain. Yesterday I noted gap in cowl to sheet metal above pcm as well and also noted that a body seal next to the pcm was soaked. It is consistent with the internet complaints about pcm being exposed/flooded with water. This is a serious concern as to the damage it can do to the vehicle's most expensive components (engine, transmission, etc) as well as potentially produce an accident on the road should other anomalous behavior surface. It is also important to note that as this vehicle ages, more of the population of produced vehicles would be exposed to this concern as gaskets lose effectiveness due to compression set, deterioration of seal, the plastic the seal is attached to warps, etc.

21 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 05/15/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestar. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the cowl needed to be sealed. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred two additional times. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 59,000.

22 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 03/01/2014

I was driving down the road in the rain and the engine light came on. Then the vehicle started to sputter and acted like it was going to stall out. It felt like I was going to lose power but I was able to make it home. Then the next day the sun was out and the car seemed to run fine. This happened to me several more times over the next few months. I started to notice a pattern of it only happening when it was raining outside. Otherwise, the vehicle ran fine in good weather. I realized water was getting into the engine somehow. Our mechanic thought it was a problem with the spark plugs at first. Then it kept happening so we had it in the shop again. Water was found to be leaking into the powertrain control module. I started to research the problem on the internet and found several customers complaining about the same problem with their vehicles. Apparently it is a well known defect in the manufacturing of this vehicle. I feel Ford should take action and recall these cars before someone gets tragically injured from their minivan losing power on a busy highway.

25 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Intermittently, when I am idling in drive (like at a light) with my foot on the brake, the van will begin to surge and lurch forward, sometimes violently. Only pressing hard on the brake will keep it from moving forward and causing a crash. Sometimes happens in reverse also. The tachometer will surge up to higher rpms and back down as it lurches. Sometimes, if it is violent enough, the battery light will flash off and on as if the vehicle is about to stall. Seems very dangerous as it could cause an accident with a nearby vehicle.

26 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 06/06/2013

After rain all night on wed. 6/4/2013 went to take van to pittsburgh started hesitaing and vibrating while on highway could not speed up and tried to get in slow lane lot of trafic almost collision . Tried to go up small hill no power vibrating trying to stall, turned off wouldnt startfor 15 minutes very scary. 27 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 04/11/2013

While driving my son to school, vehicle stalled at 45 mph and engine died. Got vehicle started again, died again, managed to get vehicle back home. This issue has been happening intermittently ever since with no warning engine will die while driving vehicle. I have been advised by a mechanic that this is due to the pcm getting wet repeatedly. After researching issue on-line, this appears to be a design issue that Ford should address immediately before it results in a fatality.

28 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

Multiple times since April 2013 this vehicle has started stalling at stop signs and traffic lights, when shifting gears the vehicle's gas would have to be slightly accelerated first and then it would move in its gear with force. Starting in July all the vehicle's power would cut off at traffic lights and stop signs and would have to be restarted. After receiving notice of the 2013 recall for the torque converter and taking it to a Ford dealership, it was then told by a dealership service rep that the transmission would need to be replaced due to accessive fluids from the torque converter affecting the transmission and damaging it. This has taken place sept. 2013.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the torque converter would have to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 97,780. The current mileage was 98,000. Kmj.

31 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 08/06/2012

Car stalls when it stops, shuttering while it drives, the car has been to the shop twice know. The second time it was left outside the auto shop and it rained over night. When the mechanics went to start it and look at it they noticed there was water dripping out of our ecm. They did some research and found that there were design flaws in the ecm and that it wasn't sealed right. There should have been a recall but there never has been. I have looked online and there are all sorts of people reporting the exact same thing.

32 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 07/21/2012

Vehicle lunges forward and tachometer shows momentary engine rpms up to 2500 causing vehicle to surge. Using the brake pedal to control the unexpected motion stalls out the engine which when restarted can only drive at very reduced speed. Ford dealership replaced throttle body and reprogrammed sensor for more tolerance as per new Ford specs. Service advisor attributed the bad throttle body to low quality gasoline.

33 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

Had powertrain symptoms related to Ford TSB 06-14-10, for engine/transmission driveablity. Had vehicle towed because I had no reverse & forward engagement, and high idle in neutral. Ford dealer, fixed transaxle per safety recall 11s25, and TSB 06-14-10, for water entering the pcm. Dealer returned our vehicle on July 10th, everything appeared okay. One July 11th, the van began have shift issues, and then stall going down the road at 20-25mph. If the pcm is damaged from water, then why don't they require replacement in the TSB. This is a serious safety issued, especially at 70mph on a freeway. This TSB should be reconsidered as a safety recall. How many people should be injured or killed due to this condition? one is to many!.

34 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar

Failure Date: 06/17/2012

Upon exiting the freeway onto secondary street the vehicle stalled out completely. We lost all driving function, power steering etc in an instant. Luckily it was later in the evening and not much traffic was behind us as this road is typically very congested. We were able to glide into a turn lane and off of the main road. The vehicle would not start and had to be towed. Local Ford dealer concluded the pcm shorted out and there was a blown ignition coil. We had car towed for second opinion as we could not believe that at 40,000 miles the entire computer that controls the engine would short for no apparent reason. Our regular auto shop agreed that the pcm had shorted causing ignition coil to fail and both had to be replaced resulting in $1200 in fees/services and a week without our vehicle since the part (according to the service shop) should never go bad and they don't keep them in stock. We feel as if Ford should be held responsible for their faulty manufacturing as we did nothing to aid in the failing of this part and minimal mileage/ wear and tear has occurred to the vehicle. We were merely a family driving home (with two toddlers) from a father's day dinner who ended up at significant safety risk when our van just stopped moving, thank goodness for the slow traffic flow that evening!.

35 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Freestar
