2 Steering Column problem of the 2014 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 03/29/2019

The bolt on our 2014 Mustang's steering column (inside by the fire wall) came loose and fell out causing the steering wheel to spin freely. Fortunately this happened in a parking lot where the car could coast into a parking space and not at highway speeds. The car was towed to the local Ford dealer where they are replacing the bolt.

4 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/20/2015

My wife driving at approximately 50mph and noticed a vibration in the steering wheel. She turned left into the first parking lot available. While turning, she heard something loose and rattling in the steering wheel. She then pulled into a parking space. She shook the steering wheel side to side and a large broken black bolt fell out. After that she realized that the wheel was free and fell off into her hands. The car is currently sitting at a local Ford dealer and is scheduled to be repaired in the next couple of days. I did take several picture of the broken bolt head, steering wheel, and steering column (with the remaining bolt). This car is owned by couple who are in there 60's. We purchased it new and has never been raced or abused.

5 Steering Column problem of the 1997 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/31/2011

As I was making a left hand turn on the highway at approx. 15mph, I heard a loud pop/crack coming from the front of the vehicle. At this time the car started to drift off to the right and onto the side of the road. I tried to turn the steering wheel left to compensate for the change and the steering wheel continued to turn in a 360 degree rotation with no control of the tires. At this time I felt something hit my shoe from above the gas pedal and I realized that something had broke causing me to have absolute no control over the vehicle. After inspecting the steering column, it was evident that the shaft had completely separated from the column that goes into the floor board and into the firewall to the engine. No broken/shard parts of metal nor any broken pieces that could have fallen off were laying underneath. It was as if the shaft was "pulled" out of the column hole. After further inspection at a body shop, it was noted that the vehicle had never been into an accident (just like the carfax report had indicated) because there are no structural damages. The technicians had never seen an issue such as this and have no explanation as to how/why the shaft would just separate with such ease. I've spoken to several mechanics and dealerships and they have never seen/heard of an issue such as this. I bought the Mustang from a local used car dealership and they have not disclosed any information regarding steering issues/if there is any to disclose. I am having the body shop completely replace the shaft because I do not feel safe operating the vehicle, if this issue is to happen again with such ease and I loose total control of steering capabilities, who is to say it won't happen on the freeway with children in the car?.

6 Steering Column problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/12/2006

On 4/12/06 I was going westbound toward tacoma, I made a left turn into a highway divide to cross traffic to go to the doctors office. Traffic was heavy because of the time of day. So I decided to make a left hand turn and go another direction. I waited for traffic so I could proceed. I made a left hand turn into traffic and it felt like my car 1996 Mustang, fishtailed (sunny day dry pavement) so I tried to correct it and the steering wheel was locked and the car took off, so I proceeded to step on the brake as hard as I could but it made no difference. The car went approximately two city blocks, it went from my lane to the other right hand lane, we were headed for the light pole and all of a sudden (with the steering still locked) made a sharp left and through me across three lanes of traffic, over the cement divide (airborne) and into another car and he hit another car. On impact the air bags did not deploy. My car was totaled the other two cars that were involved were repaired.

Now that everything has been said, my question to you is, is there anything that I can further do as a consumer??? please advise. Thank you for your assistance, iva d. Oklobdzija . 8 Steering Column problem of the 2003 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 03/01/2003

When the consumer would apply the brakes the steering wheel would jerk out of consumers hand. The steering would pull toward the left. This occurred at least four times. The consumer did not have any accidents because once he let off the brake it was fine. The first time he took it to a dealership they did nothing to the vehicle. The second time they greased a bushing. The third time they told him it was to dangerous to drive ,and that they would have to wait for a part. Also, they told consumer that there was something broken in the steering area, but they will not tell him what it was. The vehicle has not been fixed as of yet, it is currently at the dealership. Consumer has not contacted the manufacturer as of yet.
