Drivers side coil spring broke while turning into driverway, spring punctured tire and torn it apart, also breaking stabilizer bar.
2002 Ford Taurus. Both rear coil springs broke December 2009 and January 2010. . Had to have both coils and struts replaced and stabilizer bar, over $2,000. Front one broke and punctured/ruined tire February 2010, requiring a tow to dealer mechanic. Luckily the front one broke while in driveway and not while driving. Seems a bit too coincidental for 3 to break in such a short time. I don't feel safe, so had the other front one replaced before it snaps. Another over $2,000 bill.
Wife's 2002 Ford Taurus was parked in driveway when left front coil spring broke. I initially thought it was just a flat tire, but I couldn't fill it as fast as the air was leaking out. Found that the air leak was from the broken coil spring sticking into and rupturing the inner sidewall of tire. One partial coil of broken spring fell free upon removal of wheel. The remainder of the very sharp broken coil spring was,as previously mentioned, what penetrated the tire, ruining it. The broken coil spring also broke the left stabilizer bar link, which is made of plastic.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Taurus. While driving in reverse at an unknown speed, the contact felt a bump and heard a popping noise when she turned the steering wheel. She discovered that the front driver side tire was flat. She replaced the tire with the spare and went to the tire store. She was informed that the spring strut failed. The vehicle was taken to an auto garage and the spring strut and stabilizer bar were replaced at the cost of $300. The manufacturer added the contact's name to the recall waiting list, but they would be unable to assist. The recall number was unknown. The failure mileage was 44,483.
