I noticed the rear of the car was low. Found the problem to be two broken springs at the rear. I found there was a recall up until 2001 but not for 2002. I feel this is wrong since the company is still using the same springs that were under recall. This problem still exists with the same potential outcomes. I was fortunate.
All springs on the car cracked. The front springs went first around 80000 miles. The rears shortly after. The car was not drive able after the front spring broke. While backing up, I heard a bang followed by a ratcheting sound. Then noticed the right front of the car was dropped way down. For the rear springs, we heard the broken spring part hit the highway while we were driving. Then later noticed the rear of the car sagging badly.
I noticed the rear of the car sitting low. Upon inspection it was found both rear springs were fractured, and fracture was very near tire.
Tl- the contact owns a 2002 Ford Taurus. While at an independent mechanic for a routine oil change the contact was made aware the rear driver and passenger side springs were fractured and would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 117,000. Ds.
Driving at approximately 10 mph, slowed to turn left and heard a pop from the passenger rear side, followed by a grinding noise. Proceeded another block to the home driveway, checked vehicle and found that the passenger side rear spring had broken and was eating the inside sidewall of the tire. Checked online and found numerous complaints. Checked this site and found numerous complaints and a NHTSA investigation, for both front and rear springs breaking on the same model year Taurus. Contacted the Ford dealership and Ford corporate and was told there was no recall and said they would not assist in paying for the repair and accepted no responsibility for the problem. Had the vehicle repaired, and tire replaced at our expense. During the repair, also found the driver side rear spring was bad, but had not completely fractured. Also replaced the spring on the driver's side. This car has only 47700 miles, has been well cared for and has never pulled a trailer or carried any type of load. Had just left the interstate moments before the spring broke. Had the spring broken at 70 mph, destroying the tire, the resulting damage could have been catastrophic and injuries may have occurred.
Both rear springs on my 02 Ford Taurus snapped and broke. Ford will not pay for any repair costs. I've heard that this is a common problem on Tauruses/sables, but Ford is not doing anything. Only front springs were recalled thru the 01 models. This is dangerous as the broken spring may pierce the tire and lead to tire failure as you're driving the car!! they both had to be replaced at a cost of over $500. I have a low income job and can't afford it but had to be done so I could drive my car to my job.
I was driving to work and I heard an extremely loud pop come from the right rear side of my car when I had made a left hand turn at a stop light. At first I didn't think anything of it because I saw no evident damage after arriving at work. About 2 weeks later I noticed some abnormal tire wear. I took my car to the shop to ask about the tread wear and when they went to rotate my tires they found that the rear right spring had fallen off the seat. Because of the spring falling off the seat I had to have the entire right rear strut replaced. Because of the history with the springs falling off the seats and the potential damage it could do I also had the left rear strut replaced as well. I had done some research to find that what happened to my car is a very common problem among 2002 Ford Taurus as well as older models. I want the safety commission to be aware that this has happened to my vehicle now as well.
See ea08018. . . Rear springs both snapped on my 2002 Ford Taurus. Thank god I hadn't made it to the interstate yet. After some research, it appears this extremely common on the 2002 Ford Taurus and that Ford is aware of the chronic nature of this issue. I just purchased a 2002 Ford Taurus with 40, 673 miles. I had the vehicle safety inspected and revealed that both rear springs were broken. I learned that this is a very common occurrence on the 2002 Taurus, after the fact that I had just purchased the vehicle. My dealer is replacing them at no charge, but I will have to pay to replace the front springs. How can a vehicle with 40,500 miles have broken springs? I am concerned for the safety of my young family driving on the roadways if all the springs are not replaced, and the 2002 Taurus is not recalled.
Both rear springs broke on my 2002 Taurus at the same time. The broken spring also damaged the rear tires. My mechanic would not let me drive the car till it was repaired because the broken springs were sticking into the rear tires.
2002 Ford Taurus front left driver side spring failure. Luckily, car was not in use when it happened. It was sitting in the driveway idle for 1 full day (March 12). Tried to use it tonight, moved a few inches, seemed like something was hung up. There was a sound of something rubbing against rubber. Examined suspension being closer to the ground than usual. Found front driver side spring broken near the bottom. It has extended past the bracket which holds it. It is putting extreme pressure onto the tire. If I was to drive it further, it would most definitely puncture the tire and cause more damage to other parts of the vehicle. I do not know the status of the strut. Could have been deadly if it happened while traveling on the highway. Also looks as if at least one of the rear springs has broken. Will be calling Ford dealer to get estimate for repairs. Looks as if it is happening to many of the cars manufactured after the 1998 to 2001 recall, also the 2002 and 2003 model years.

Will be calling Ford dealer to get estimate for repairs as I hear there is no recall as of yet. I have a 2002 Ford Taurus se v6. The left front spring broke and began to rub the tire. I was only doing about 30 mph at the time on a small road and could pull over in about 300 feet. This car also had two rear springs break about 6 months ago. The car has 117,000 miles on it. I had a 1999 Taurus that had a recall that installed a shield around the spring to prevent a spring break from shredding the tire. This is an unsafe design. If I were going highway speeds when this happened, I probably would have been severely injured, possible rollover.
Both rear springs on my 2002 Ford Taurus ses broke. The left front spring broke 3 years ago.
I didnt get into and accident. Went to change my tires, the rear springs were broke. I replaced both sides and spent 800. Took my car into my dealer in January to get my heat fixed and they told me the right front spring was broke. So I had the fix plus the tie rod.
While backing out of a parking spot, I heard a pop and noticed the front end was leaning. When I looked out the door, I concluded it as a flat tire. Later the towing company stated it was due to the front driver's side spring breaking and puncturing the tire. The spring, mount, and strut all had to be replaced. Ford motor company was notified and stated that my vehicle was not on any recalls. (approx. Mileage 107,000) within the past 2 months, both rear springs broke as well.
Broken rear driver side spring pending repair you people have limited your investigation in ea08018 to only the front springs on the Taurus models. The back springs are garbage too. Thanks to you !@#$% bureaucrats, thousands of drivers nationwide are being screwed out of hundreds and thousands of dollars of repair costs. Most mechanic don't want to just replace the springs, they want to replace the struts too. That estimated cost is $1200. So far we've been lucky that the one spring that did brake, did not do peripheral damage, so far.
1. The 2002 Taurus was purchased new and we have had no unusual incidents, accidents, or failures. 2. The 2002 Taurus with less then 60,000 miles was parked when the rear spring snapped. The edge of the spring cut the rear tire causing the tire to fail. All of this happened with the vehicle parked and unoccupied. Yes we retained both of the (failed) rear springs. 3. We had the vehicle toed to the Ford dealer. We had both rear springs replaced. When asked if there was a design change on the spring all we were told was to drive with caution.
Car 2002 Ford Taurus sel 3. 0l the rear drivers side spring broke and cut the rear tire. The incident happened when the car was being backed out of the garage. Car had to be taken to the dealership on a flatbed. Both rear springs and the cut tire are being replaced.
I own a 2002 Ford Taurus with 95000 miles. I had (fortunately) parked my car for work; on return had a flat tire. On changing it, found the inside of the tire ripped open almost all the way around. When I took it in for a new tire, it was found the front driver spring had broken, and I was told "the Taurus has a problem with this". I had to replace both front springs and struts, get new tires and a wheel alignment to the cost of $1300. Now I'm researching and found the 2002 was not included in the recall for this problem, and the rear springs can break too, usually at much lower mileage. I'm now afraid to drive my car, and am looking for a new one sooner than I had planned. This could have been catastrophic if it had happened on the highway.
We returned home after a five hour trip and parked in our garage, a while later returned to car to retrieve an item out of the car. When I sat down in the drivers seat I heard a loud "bang" that came from the rear of the car. Upon checking things out, I found that the rear drivers side spring had broken. The end result could have been much worse if this happened while traveling due to the fact that the sharp edge of the broken spring was really close to the inside of the tire. I have never seen a spring break like this before. I had a 2001 Taurus that had a recall for the front springs. The band-aid recall from Ford was to install a "shield" on the springs to keep them from puncturing the front tire if the spring broke. When this last issue happened last week, I done some checking and was shocked at the amount of complaints I found for the front and rear spring breakage on the Taurus. Ford is only recalling the 99-01 Taurus for the front springs. The Taurus has continued to have this problem beyond the 2001 model year and Ford has done nothing to help. Why don't I have this kind of problem with my 15 year old 170,000 mile Toyota avalon? when Toyota has a safety issue with any of their vehicles the step up and correct the problem including buying back thousands of their trucks. They must put a higher value on a persons life then Ford! this repair for the rear struts and springs was over $300 for parts alone. Now I'm worried about the front springs breaking while my wife is driving! I was looking to buy a 2010 new body Taurus later this year, but I have suddenly changed my mind. I see a new avalon in our family's future.
My rear spring on the left side of my car snapped and slashed my tire as I was driving. The car is a 2002 Ford Taurus. From what I've read on many discussion boards this is a common occurrence with 2002 Ford Tauruses. I think Ford should think about doing a recall for this particular problem being that there is a defect in their springs for this model.
My 2002 Ford Taurus broke a front spring and punctured my tire. This is the second time one of the springs has broken. In the summer of 2007 a rear spring also broke. I only have 32,000 miles on my car and take very good care of my car I was luck the last spring broke in my driveway but right before it broke I was driving in an ice storm. These 2002 Taurus need to be recalled before no one is in a serious accident. December 2008 I had a merry christmas because I was not involved in an accident.
Rear springs snapped in 2002 Ford Taurus. Causing the spring to slide into the side of the tire. Spring has signs of rust pitting, possibly causing the stress of the spring to snap.
While backing out of my driveway heard rubbing noise from rear of car, started pulling forward to drive away stopped to investigate source of noise, thought it was frozen brakes, loud noise and rear tire exploded. Put on small spare tire and drove to work. After work stopped at tire shop for new tire, they showed me damage to tire caused by broken rear suspension spring. Told me about being a frequent event for Ford Taurus?s. There is a recall on 2001 Ford Taurus for front springs, my car is a 02 Taurus and it was the rear spring. Called Ford they were no help other than say I should contact NHTSA.
I have a 2002 Ford Taurus which has experienced 2 suspension spring failures in the last year. The rear left occurred about 8 months ago and the most recent was the front left on 6/26/08. The front spring failure was in a parking lot as I was backing out, with the spring puncturing the tire with complete loss of pressure. The vehicle has 105k miles on it and has been well maintained at the local Ford dealership. In both cases the springs and struts were replaced, alignment performed and in the case of the front, I had to have two new tires in order to have a matched pair.
Right rear spring broke and gouged into tire. I had to replace both rear springs, tires, struts and retainers.
In February, 2008, had both rear springs fixed on my 2002 Ford Taurus. Was told by the garage that this was a common problem for Ford but the 2002 was not included in the recall. Just today, June 15, 2008, was driving at about 55 mph with my family home from church when it sounded like we ran over a log - my husband checked and the drivers side front spring is busted.
It was an average normal day, while backing out of my drive way when I heard a loud bang. I thought it odd so I got out to my car to check if I had ran over anything or backed into something. At that moment I notice my car was sitting in the lower than usual. I reentered my vehicle with the intent to continue on to my destination. The car proceed to make a loud rubbing sound so I stopped what I was doing and drove back up my drive way. I took off the back tire where I noticed that the spring had snapped and was rubbing into my back tire. I checked the other tire and found out that it had snapped both of the springs on my rear tires at the same time. I have not been able to correct this problem because I work for 7. 15 an hour at a fast food place. My family has worked for Ford for 2 generations and I am very disappointed with their performance.
I have a 2002 Ford Taurus and after taking car in for an oil change, mechanic noticed both rear springs were broken. One spring was starting to rub against tire. Car only has 51k miles. It appears that there is a problem with these cars and Ford should issue a recall for spring replacement.
Broken rear nearside spring caused flat tire on highway as broken end of spring wore through sidewall . Repair pending.
I have had a 2002 Ford Taurus for 2 years. 54,000 miles on it and maintained quite well. On Jan. 6, 2008, I had just driven back from a 3 1/2 hour drive into toronto and back. Had no issues with the vehicle. When I went out later in the day and back my car out of the driveway, I noticed a rubbing sound in the rear driver's side wheel well area. I had the vehicle towed to the dealer where vehicle was purchased and found out that the rear driver's side spring coil was broken. According to the consumer affairs website, this is an ongoing problem and the 2001 Taurus was recalled for the same issue but not the 2002. Due to the large number of complaints, this really needs to be looked into as it is quite common. I had the spring replaced along with the tire for a cost of $459. 00. I was lucky that this did not happen while I was driving 70 miles an hour into canada and back again.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the rear suspension spring snapped. As a result, a jagged metal rod rubbed against the rear driver side tire and caused it to blow out. The vehicle was not being driven when the rear suspension snapped. The vehicle is currently being inspected. The current and failure mileages were 55,000. Updated 12/12/07.
While driving passenger side rear spring broke in strut also damaging tire. Vehicle has 50,981 miles. Have an appoint on 9/18/2007 to replace both rear struts & alignment done.
2002 Ford Taurus wagon, rear suspension coil spring broke while sitting in driveway. Wow, thank god we were not driving with the kids in the car.
