1 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2019

2 times since sept. 2018 the cable under hood to accelerator came off while I was driving making it very difficult to stop. The first time I was driving on a state highway at 60 mph. The most recent I was driving in a subdivision at 10 mph. The rpm's increased drastically. I feel this is a major safety issue with this issue and Ford needs to fix it. I got this from my elderly mother and I am just thankful it did not happen while she was driving.

2 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2019

I was leaving the grocery store and driving down a local road when I realized that I was accelerating without having my foot on the gas pedal. This had happened twice before in the previous few weeks but far less severe. This time I had to keep my foot heavy on the brakes to maintain control. Fortunately I was near home and managed to get my car home without incident, although I saw that I had suddenly developed a flat on my front left tire. This had been a problem the previous year and when I took it into the shop I was told the cruise control cable was causing the problem. I had the car taken in (may 20, 2019) after the two minor incidents the previous week but the repair shop couldn't find the problem so I took the car back promising to come back if it acted up again.

3 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2019

Seems as if the car accelerator get stuck. Car slowly begins to increase in speed. When foot is taken off of the pedal car continues to increase in speed, even when applying the brake. I take a look under the hood and from what I can see there is a plastic piece connected to the accelerator cable the becomes detached from the actual accelerator bracket so to speak. Idk what actual terminology is. It is very hard to and get the accelerator out of the stuck position. Only way I have had success with getting the accelerator out of the stuck position is to very rapidly press pedal to floor and release. Only then it releases from the stuck position.

4 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2018

First time (oct 2018): while driving on freeway car kept accelerating without my foot on accelerator. I had to brake to slow within acceptable speed. Within 10 minutes the problem stopped occurring. I took it to mechanic & he could not find any problem or replicat the problem. 2nd time (oct 12, 2018, 4 days after being st mechanic) & 400 miles away from home-- I was driving on surface street in the city, acceleration happened again without any use of accelerator. I had to brake & get to side of street, put in park & turn off engine. Waited 10 minutes & tried again. Problem remedied. We looked on internet & found "unintended acceleration" problem with same make & year due to cruise control cable coming off the throttle control & getting in the way of throttle trying to close. Took it to mechanic, told them to look for this problem with cruise & throttle, & they said they would check. They said they could not replicate the ui but ascribed it to something else & charged me over $400, so I could drive back 400 miles to home safely. 3rd time- within 7 days, same acceleration happened after just leaving home, driving in city. Happened right way, throttled really high rpm's & so I shifted to neutral to stop. Tried it again over next 24 hours & problem continued. Tried it 2 days later when taking it to mechanic & it had resolved so I could drive it there. Told Ford mechanic about the internet explanation. Indeed, that is what they found: the cruise control cable was off the throttle control. Was pinching against the throttle, causing it to stay open. They tri ed to get the part, but were unable. So they used a cable tie to secure it in place. That has been almost a month ago, & I have not had the unintended acceleration occur since.

5 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2018

While driving his low mile 2005 Ford Taurus both on the highway and on city streets, my son has experienced several incidents of unintended acceleration or stuck throttle while letting off the gas pedal in order to slow down or brake. Additionally, the cruise control does not work. Driving on the very busy highways of northern California with its prevalent stop and go driving make this condition extremely dangerous. An internet search of this issue shows this is not an isolated incident. As I have been a mechanic since 1973, I decided to take a look at the throttle cable / cruise control cable to see if these two issues were related. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the cruise control cable was decoupled from its post mount (see pictures). I have surmised that the decoupled cable could block the throttle cable roll back to the idle stop, and if the cruise control was initiated, the loose cable could drive forward and articulate the throttle forward to the wide open throttle position as it searches to control the drive speed. As both the throttle actuator and the cruise control cable interface are made of plastic, one or both have worn past the point where the cruise control cable will stay securely coupled to its mounting post. Why aren't both of these parts steel? well, plastic is cheap and easy to make. But profit over safety is unacceptable. Nhtsa, please address this. This is a safety issue that can or will wreck the car, which could injure or kill someone.

6 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2018

My accelerator is sticking, it happened today and 2 more times in the past 2 weeks while driving in the highway and side roads, I was not using the cruise control. The accelerator stuck at high rpm and it will not slow down, I had to apply the breaks very hard to stop, it was a scary situation, this is obviously a safety concern. I hit the gas pedal several times to make it go down but it did not respond, I had to stop in the side of the road the first time an hit the are in the motor where the accelerator cable is and actuated it manually after turning the car off. But it has happened twice since then. This is not normal and could result in a bad accident or even death. When putting the car in park or neutral the rpm stayed around 4000. Something has to be done, I found that other complaints have been submitted for the same reason.

7 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2018

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Taurus. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle spontaneously accelerated without warning. The contact applied the brakes and pulled the vehicle over in a parking lot. The contact also stated that the same failure occurred two other times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (glockner Ford in south point, ohio, 740-894-3673) where it was diagnosed that the throttle cable failed. The vehicle was repaired twice, but the failure persisted. The same dealer informed the contact that the part that failed was no longer under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

8 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2018

While driving down a street or on the highway it feels like the cruise control takes over, disconnected the cable and it still does it, put the shifter in neutral and it revs to 4000 until you stomp on the throttle.

9 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2018

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Taurus. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated as the rpms increased. The contact was able to move out of traffic, stop the vehicle, and shift into park; however, the rpms were still high. The contact turned off the engine and restarted the vehicle, but the rpms remained high. The contact repeated the steps three times before driving the vehicle while slightly depressing the brake pedal. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with a cruise control cable failure that was causing the throttle to stay open and inadvertently accelerating the vehicle. The contact stated that the repairs were unknown, but the independent mechanic informed her that he placed an unknown substance on the cable to keep it in place. The contact was concerned that the failure would recur. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was approximately 168,000.

10 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2017

The accelerator is sticking causing the car to rev high (4000) rpm's when not stepping on the gas pedal causing an unsafe condition. This accelerator stick can be corrected temporarily by stabbing at the gas petal quickly. My mechanic said the cruse control cable was disconnected and reconnected it but the issue occurred the next day. This issue happened to my daughter sever times and then to me when I was driving. I was approaching a red light at about 35 mph let off the gas completely to coast, and the car continued to accelerate and pick up speed. This issue is not related to the car being warmed up or running cold.

11 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2016

Accelerator would stick at a high rpm when stationary as well as in motion. This would occur erratically. The idol control valve was replaced twice before the mechanic noticed the cruise control cable was not connected. The cable was removed and not replaced. The idle control valve was replaced a third time with a motorcraft part.

12 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2016

The accelerator cable broke of which caused the car to no longer be able to accelerate. The vehicle was being driven and all of a sudden the cable snapped while on a residential street.

13 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2015

This is my second complaint on the same problem. In the past week my car started accelerating with the rpms up to 4000. The first time I was able to pull over and put it in neutral. While in neutral I revved the gas but it took a few times before the rpms reverted to normal. I experienced this in the past a few years ago and made a similar complaint. My mechanic replaced the cable and I sent it in to be analyzed. I called my mechanic today and he is sure it is the same problem because it happened again while if was exiting an off ramp from the expressway. This time I put it in neutral again and pressed the gas pedal hard twice and the engine when to normal. This is obviously a defect and a safety issue. I am just happy it is not winter so I have a better chance of controlling this obviously defective vehicle. I am concerned that nothing was done initially and even if I wanted to sell this car I would not want anyone to experience this potentially harmful problem. I am getting this repaired again but I am disappointed that this problem is not important enough to recall.

14 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2015

20150705 0940 as I was driving about 25-30 mph the car started accelerating on its on, I tapped on the brakes, there were no deceleration of the vehicle, as the car continued to accelerate. As I was coming to my left hand turn approaching other vehicles I realize that I was not going to be able to stop the car as long as the car keeps accelerating, therefore I executed the turn prematurely to avoid a possible accident. As I entered onto the street I turned on to I pumped the brakes several times and the car continued to accelerate. I continued to press the brakes and slowing the car to about 5 mph and released the brakes and the car taken off again. I placed the car in neutral and revved the engine several times and the engine speed came back down to idle. I just had the vehicle at the butch oustalet Ford dealership (20150512 with a written and oral description of the problems with the acceleration, engine shut-off, stalling . I was contacting by them informing me about the cruise control cable, windshield wiper water hose broken as well as bill for over $1000. 00 to repair. As I researched online last night to find out there has been a issue related for this same problem, and that NHTSA has contacted Ford about this, but given them the opportunity to handle it in-house, a recall was never issued of this potentially death trap at the cost of the consumer. On the invoice there is a limited warranty for certain parts, but there is no warranty for misdiagnosing, wrongful charge, intentional fraud and abuse of customer expectation, not to mention integrity of the dealership. What I have read online regarding NHTSA investigation is , it is going to take several deaths related to this issue before positive corrective matters are taken before the consumers receive the justice that is needed. 1965 mustang issues, still in denial.

15 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2015

I was driving on a country road with curves and hills. My car began racing ahead, even though I wasn't pressing harder on the accelerator. I took my foot off the accelerator and it surged uphill, I braked but the engine pulled hard speeding up even faster. I was in drive, but shifted to 1 (low). There was no where to pull over, I managed to make it home and call my mechanic. He replaced the ignition coil and the problem went away until June 26th (while I was away from home on a long distance trip). There would be acceleration and when the floor mat was pulled away and the accelerator pedal was pushed up from underneath with the foot, the problem would go away. This was intermittent between June 26 - July 1. On July 2nd, we were in san francisco in bumper to bumper traffic, when the car would pull ahead, pressing hard on the brake I could barely keep the car from hitting the car in front of me. Finally, I managed to pull over and park. When I turned the engine off and back on again, it no longer revved up (3,000 - 4,200 rpm). We drove for 45 minutes, then the same problem started again. We pulled over and got a tow to a mechanic. The mechanic checked everything (including the cruise control cable, accelerator cable, and throttle) he found intermittent problems with (I think, it was a long scary day yesterday and the car is at the mechanics with the paperwork) the throttle (not throttle cable). I had him replace the throttle and halfway home from san francisco, it began revving and racing ahead, brakes were applied, but we could smell the brake pads burning, we were able to pull off safely without incident. After allowing the car to rest for almost 2 hours, it was still revving between 3,000-4,200 rpm's, with an intermittent "thump" lurch. I'm afraid to drive it, I feel like my life is in danger in this car. *mileage listed above is approximate*.

16 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2015

Accelerated on its own. Reached a speed of 60 mph on busy highway. Was unable to brake but was able to pull over and put the car in park. After looking under the hood, noticed the cruise control cable had come off. Almost had a collision. Very dangerous!.

17 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2015

The gas pedal was stuck and I could not slow down, I put the car in neutral and stepped on the gas pedal hard and the rpms lowered and I could drive normal again, I did a search on the internet and the speed control cable is the cause, sure enough I looked under the hood after my search and it was disconnected and was interfering with the throttle.

18 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

I have a 05 Ford Taurus with the same exact symptoms as the previous year Taurus had wich lead to a recall. My cruise control cable will come off the throttle body holding the throttle open and revving at 4 grand when pit in neutral to resolve the issue. After a week of disputing with the car dealership, they finally fixed it at no charge.

19 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2014

On the afternoon of 10/08/2014, owner's spouse was operating said vehicle on a country road. She had just stopped at a stop sign, accelerated and turned onto a state highway. When the vehicle reached approximately 40mph, vehicle began quickly accelerating on it's own. Car reached 80mph. In a panic, driver didn't know what to do, so she pressed on the brakes as hard as she could but could only get the vehicle to slow to approximately 40mph. Driver made a quick decision and turned into a driveway, shut vehicle off and put it in park. Driver called husband. Husband told driver to turn on car. Car revved up to approximately 5000rpm. Husband told driver to put the car in neutral and punch on the accelerator a couple of times. This brought rpm back to normal. This was an extremely dangerous situation, as driver didn't know exactly what to do in this instance and there were many other vehicles on the road. Driver just got lucky that she did the right thing. This happens to the car daily. This evening, owner's son checked under the hood and found the cruise control cable was unhooked due to a broken bracket. This evening, owner's spouse checked the internet for possible causes. Exact cause was found but couldn't find any recalls for this specific problem. Son said to unhook the cruise control module. Will see if this solves the problem.

20 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

About a month ago while driving on the freeway, after accelerating, the vehicle wanted to keep accelerating. I maintained speed by braking. I pumped the gas pedal a few times which seemed to fix the issue. This occurred a few more times over a months period. The beginning of July 2014 the same thing happened but pumping the gas was ineffective. I braked and pulled off the road. I put the vehicle in park which made the rpms go quite high and then shut the engine off. I looked under the hood and found a cable disconnected going to the throttle which I believe is part of the cruise control. I reconnected the cable and was able to drive home. Today I went to the Ford dealer to discuss the issue. They gave me the contact info for Ford owner and I opened a case. Ford said there is currently no recall for this issue. Currently the car seems ok but the problem is intermittent and im not sure if the cable will disconnect again. Incident was a bit nerve racking but could have been serious if I needed to bake quickly.

21 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2014

I was driving along and all of sudden my car felt like an out of body experience and was accelerating faster than I was going. I was able to come to a stop after applying the brakes very hard. Shut the car off - started it again 2 different time and the tachometer went up to 3 rpm - on the third try I tapped the gas pedal and the rpm's came down. I drove home (approx. 8 miles) safely without any further incidents. I took it to the dealer the next day - I told them what had occurred and I also mentioned that my cruise control was not working. (this is the third time I had trouble with my cruise control) they are replacing the throttle control body and speed control cable. I am now waiting to hear from them to pick up my car. What I don't understand is this - if it is known there is a problem with the gas pedal sticking why has there not been a recall. Are you waiting until some serious accident occurs or for a fatality? I am just glad I was not on a congested highway when this happened - it was 9:00 pm at night on my way home after visiting my sons and believe me when I say I was quite upset and shaking when this occurred. I never want to experience something like this again. I wish your association would look into this further so it can be rectified. Thank you for your time and attention to this submittal.

22 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2014

Throttle body/cruise control cable needed replaced for the second time. Car accelerated w/o pushing the gas up to 30 mph. This is the second time I have had to have it fixed for the same issue.

23 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2014

Throttle sticks at cruising speed, and won't release without kicking accelerator pedal. Cruise control cable causing throttle not to return to idle position when letting off accelerator pedal! car maintained speed if not slowed by braking without cruise control activated. Removed cruise control cable and throttle works fine, however Ford dealer wants to replace throttle body for $400 and not replace cable? this same vehicle also has an intermittent hard shift problem with the transmission between 1st and 2nd gear approx. 5% of the, but runs fine the rest of the time, dealer says it would need to replace the entire transmission for $3300 but vehicle is now valued around that!.

24 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Taurus. The contact stated while driving 45 mph the vehicle accelerated to 65 mph. The contact had to apply the brakes hard. The dealer was contacted and the cruise control cable was disconnected. The problem recurred and the dealer replaced the trottle body and the cruise control cable. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 79,000. An.

25 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2014

Was stopped in left turn lane. Accelerated up driveway to enter parking lot and throttle stuck, rode brake into parking lot. Tach was at approx. 2500 rpm, switched feet on brake pedal and tapped the accelerator twice and the idle went down below 1000 rpms and shut off engine. After restarting engine idle was normal. When I returned home I checked under hood and found cruise control cable clip was not on throttle body pin. I reattached the clip to the pin. Tried cruise control and it did not work. Checked cruise control cable and the clip was off again and laying next to the throttle body pin. I left the cruise cable disconnected but the acceleration problem has happened four (4) more times. Once to me and three (3) times to my daughter. I believe the cruise clip gets stuck under the throttle body pin and when the accelerator is tapped it comes loose and idle returns to normal. I have owned multiple cars with cruise control and never had a similar problem, even with over 100,000 miles on them.

26 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2014

The car was accelerating on its own. So we had a mechanic fix it he replaced the throttle cable. Approximately 4 months later it started doing it again. The car accelerated and my daughter hit a car in front of her. Gorno Fords fixed the car they replaced the throttle cable agene. That was around may 3, 2015 that they fixed the car. Around June 12, the car accelerated and I could not stop the car and I hit the care in front of me. I called gorno Ford but they said that they could not do any thing to help me. Even though the fixed the car.

27 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2014

While driving on the highway at 60 mph without the cruise control on, the car started to accelerate on its own to up to 75 mph. I pumped the brakes to reduce the speed, but the car continued to accelerate. I tried lifting the gas pedal with my foot to see if it was stuck; it was not. I turned the cruise control on and off, but cruise was not functioning. I continued to drive on the highway (about 10 miles) to my destination, and continued to pump the brakes while driving to prevent the car from going at a dangerous speed. When I got off the highway, I had trouble braking. The car lurched forward a bunch when I tried stopping completely. While braking, the car shook and the rpms shot up to about 3500. I did get the car to stop at a red light, but only after pushing pretty hard on the brakes. When the light turned green, I lifted my foot off the brake and the car accelerated on its own. The rpms continued to remain around 3500. Since I was in the city, I continuously hit the brakes so I wouldn't go over 40, but each time I did this, the front of the car shook vigorously. It was terrifying. The car was making a lot of noise, too. By the time I got to my destination and put my car in park, it was really loud and the rpms remained above 3000. I turned off the car and let it sit for about 90 minutes. Later, I turned it on again and the rpms shot to 2500, dropped to about 2000, and then jumped to 3500. I immediately turned it off. I had it towed to the dealer. The mechanic stated that the cruise control cable had fallen apart/failed, which caused the throttle to continuously accelerate. I also had to get my front brakes completely redone, because my constant breaking to prevent the car from speeding out of control warped the rotor (which made the car shake when I braked). This was a very dangerous and frightening situation.

28 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2014

I was going down the hwy. At 55 and my car started accelerating suddenly. I slowed down a little bit and tapped the breaks again and it kept accelerating. I slowed way down to 40mph and took my foot off the gas and it accelerated up to over 60 mph on its own. I kept my foot on the gas and pulled off the highway at the next exit. When I got to the bottom of the exit I had to stop. My car kept accelerating and would not drop below 2rpm dispite the fact I had my foot on the break. It kept lurching forward slowly and the breaks weren't holding (and I have fairly new breaks). I had to turn the car off. When the light turned green I started again and the car accelerated again up to 30 mph on its own without me hitting the gas. I kept my foot on the break and coasted into a parking lot and turned the car off. I turned the car on again and it shot up to 4rpm and did not drop so I turned the car off and had a shop come pick it up. They said that the cruse control cable became disconnected and caught on the throttle causing the car to keep accelerating. I've never even used the cruse control on the vehicle at all and I have had possession of it since around 60,000 miles.

29 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Taurus. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the vehicle independently increased the speed to 65 mph. This failure occurred four times within a day. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed there was a faulty cruise control cable. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 71,000.

30 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2014

When I tried to set the cruise control it would not set or hold the speed. Later that day, when driving at approximately 40 mph, the car decided it was going to speed up. I put my foot on the brake and when I took it off, the car sped up again. I again put my foot on the brake and put the car in neutral as I pulled to the side of the road. When I got the car stop the engine rpms were up around 4rpms, at this point I shut the car off. I took the car to a Ford dealership and they ended up replacing the cruise control cable which was broken. It cost me $140. 43 this was on 2-21-13 (143,350 miles). About 3 days ago 2-6-14 (159,000miles), the car again did this same thing. Once again I will be taking it into the Ford dealership to have this issue fixed. I am hoping that I will not be charged this time. This is very dangerous and scary when it happens. I am glad I was driving the car and not my 16 year who is just learning to drive.

31 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2014

The cruise control was activated but continued to be engaged and my car was accelerating after I applied the brake preparing to stop. My car continued to travel and I had to pull off the road while I was tapping on the gas pedal hoping to stop this alarming development. The car eventually stopped accelerating and I continue driving to my destination but I experienced the same problem at least twice on my way and I decided to stop in a business parking lot and inspect the cruise control cable. I discovered that it was partially disconnected from its link to the throttle body and was keeping the throttle plate from closing. I disconnected the cruise control cable and I have not had unintended acceleration since then. I went to the local Ford dealership to inquire about this safety-compromising malfunction and I was told that my cruise control cable needs replacement. I failed to ask if the cable is actually the culprit because it has somehow failed or if the design of its linkage to the throttle body is the cause for the partial disconnection of the cable from the linkage in which case this could happen again even after the cable is replaced.

32 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Sudden acceleration incident, the gas pedal was not stuck however the throttle flange was jammed due to the cruise control cable separating from the housing clip (cruise control actuator cable adjuster) that jammed the throttle in the open position. Disconnected the cruise control cable from the throttle and continued driving with no further problem except that the cruise control no longer functions.

33 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2013

Cruise control indicated engaged but car would not maintain speed. Car later accelerated on it's own, up to 85 mph. Had to apply brakes consistently to keep from accelerating above 85 mph and maintain appropriate speed. Happened 8 times in 3 days. Mechanic found cruise cable detached and tangled around throttle. Mechanic left cruise cable detached and tied it away from throttle.

34 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2013

I was driving at 45mph and got up to the speed limit and let off the gas, but the car kept on speeding up. I tapped the brakes and it quit accelerating. (cruise control was not on) a few minutes later we were on a highway and got up to 55mph, again let off of the gas and the car kept accelerating. Tapping the brake did nothing, so I pushed the brakes to stop the car alongside the road, the whole time, the car was fighting me, it wanted to keep accelerating. I did get it to stop, and then popped it into neutral, which caused the rpms to ramp up to 5500rpms. I shut the car off. Waited a few minutes and then started it back up in park, and rpms ramped up again. Shut the car off again. Popped the hood and looked at the throttle/cruise control cable, pulled on it a bit, and it seemed as if it was stuck. Started the car again and worked just fine. But then the cruise control no longer worked. The next morning looked at the cable again and found that the cruise cable was detached, so hooked it back up, which fixed the cruise control, but it has accelerated on its own twice this past week. So problem not fixed.

35 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2013

My daughter was driving and the engine went to 4,000 rpms without applying the gas pedal and stayed at 4,000 rpms after she applied the brake, stopped, and put in park. Turned off the engine and restarted moments later with same result. The next day it started and drove with no problem. I found the cruise control cable was detached from its post and I reattached. Now we know why we didn't have cruise control. She was a bit shaken by the experience.
