Three problems related to speed control springs have been reported for the 2005 Ford Taurus. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2005 Ford Taurus based on all problems reported for the 2005 Taurus.
My accelerator pedal starting sticking and has continued to do so for over a week, now. My cruise control also stopped working at the same time. If I tap the accelerator pedal, it will usually return to normal. The cruise control will work intermittently, but is inoperative more than it is operative. I can live without the cruise control, but the sticking accelerator pedal is dangerous. Also, sometimes when I set the cruise control, I can feel the accelerator pedal accept the speed, but then it will almost immediately disconnect and the accelerator pedal will spring back to its normal position. I've read that other Ford Tauruses have had what appears to be the same exact problem. Ford really should issue a safety recall to fix this issue.
Tuesday July 10, 2012, while driving home from work, heading slightly uphill at roughly 32 mph, I was messing around with the cruise control that hasn't been working since sometime in early December. The dashboard cruise control light comes on when I press on then set accel to set the speed, but the cruise control does not take over the gas pedal and maintain speed. It appears to shut off when I depress the brake, or turn the cruise control off via the steering wheel buttons. Once before, I noticed driving the same path that the car appeared to accelerate on its own. This was sometime early spring 2012. On Tuesday, I let off the gas pedal, but noticed the engine continued to slightly increase rpm and speed on its own up to about 44 mph. I was able to stop at the stop lights using the brakes, but the engine kept revving somewhat. Pushing some of the buttons and pulling up on the gas pedal with my foot seemed to release the throttle and get the car to act normal once again. This is the second time I have noticed this happening in 8 months, but the first time I have documented the incident.
Was on the interstate with speed control set to 70 mph it started about 45 min in to my trip to look like I was going to fast so I looked down I was going 85 mph so I tried to disengage and it would not hit brakes to try to dis engage it would not so I shut the car off and put in neutral when I got stopped I got under the hood and removed the cable from the throttle body for the cruise and I do believe it damaged my transmission when I shut the car off and let it roll my transmission is jerking now also another issue to look in to on the 2004 to 2007 Taurus is the clock spring for the airbag in the steering wheel I know several people who have had failures and mine is failing now it sounds like it is broke when you turn the steering wheel you get a sound like theirs is a loose bearing floating around also it has jammed on me where I had to jerk it and made a pop sound real hard to turn the wheel while making a turn I missed hitting another car by 2 foot.
