The 1st problem, had a check engine light on my 2001 Ford Windstar, c1518 "intake manifold runner control stuck open. " after reading forums, most pointed to a plastic "bushing" clip coming off leaving a control arm 2nd problem, abs chk light and brk chk light come on after driving for a few minutes, abs module and abs sensor went out.

I purchased my 2002 Ford Windstar as a new vehicle and I have been the only owner and driver. It has received regular professional servicing and repairs and overall, is in superior condition. Since 2007 it has only been used on the weekends and I use a smaller car for work. A few years ago, the abs light started coming on unpredictably and intermittently in rainy weather and the brakes would lose power dramatically increasing braking distances. Because the problem with braking was sporadic at first, the mechanic thought it was merely an electrical problem causing the abs light to come on. The Ford service department said there were no recalls for such a problem. I have had the brakes replaced, and although the pads and rotors are in good condition, the braking problem has worsened. The abs light and intermittent brake failure is much more frequent. I have recently learned that other Windstar owners have experienced the same problem and that Ford recalled 1999-2003 Windstars for abs because the ecu master relay has a bad soldier joint that fails causing the intermittent contacts. When I brought that information to my Ford service manager, I was told the recall did not include my particular VIN. I am not sure how Ford determines which vins get recalled -- but I am sure that my vehicle should have been included. It is unsafe because the brakes are unpredictable at this point. It is scary to think that Ford would allow this known and serious defect in it's vehicles to go unaddressed.

Abs warning light comes on at various times. Sometimes resets with restart of engine, sometimes not. Vehicle experiences extended braking distances when abs light is illuminated.
My 2002 Ford Windstar started to display the brake, traction control and abs indicator lights, indicating that the abs system was malfunctioning. This causes the traction control not to work, and the abs to shut down. Standard brakes still function. At first, the lights would stay off for a period of time when I restarted the car. I would start to drive, then I might hit a bump in the road and the lights would reappear. Now, the 3 lights are on as soon as I start the car or within a few minutes of driving, with or without hitting a bump in the road. My mechanic stated that this is a common problem in Ford Windstars and that an abs module needs to be replaced at an approx. Cost of $1500.

Noticed at this time and several other times that the abs light would come on and I would loose this system and brakes would lock and also have no brakes intermittently. Worse in hot weather than in cold.

Abs dashboard light -- for over a year now we have been dealing with a abs dashboard light which comes on and off. The majority of the time it has been on. We have had computers hooked up trying to diagnose the issue with false diagnosis. In addition to the abs light the engine light also will come on and off with the same outcomes, sometimes vehicle will show hesitating during cold weather and then light will emerge. In the past few months we have started having an issue with the right tail light remaining on after the vehicle has been turned off. We tried several different remedies with this problem too but eventually it too returns. If left alone the light will eventually shut itself off but makes the red tail light shield very hot to the touch. We have been told that all of the above problems it may be related and may be a relay problem . This has been a very frustrating problem and I worry about the abs problem being a safety problem. I have two children who ride in this vehicle constantly with me, one of them has heart problems and is on coumadin therapy and even a minor incident could be major and life threatening to him. I ask you to please look into this problem. I am aware that there are many others experiencing the same problems with their Ford Windstar minivans too, a simple search on the internet shows many frustrated consumers. I was driving on the highway and my abs light came and I noticed the cruise control also didn't work any more . I took it to the Ford dealer and they did the recall for the leaky scds switch this fixed the cruise problem but the abs no longer works on my Windstar.
Failure of abs electronic control unit. First noticed as abs dashboard light would come on intermittently since June 2010. When checked out by the (non-Ford) shop that does all the work, they certified that the brakes were fine, but the abs ecu was producing multiple and apparently random error codes. After about a month this became an almost daily occurrence; took vehicle to Ford who reported the ecu had failed completely (non-operative) and I would need to replace it. Ford mechanic said this was not uncommon on these Windstars. I did so at a cost of $1,200. 00.
Abs light comes on, abs system not active, occurs when car and outside temperatures are hot. Diagnostic indicates ecm board for abs is bad. Current recall for brake pressure differential deactivation switch had been completed. Braking distance suddenly increased.
Abs light continuously coming on and going off, tire sensor lights coming on and going off when tire pressure is ok. Took to mechanic in 9/2013 and diagnosis was that abs module needed replacement.
My 2002 Ford Windstar started this year in may having the abs and brake warning lights come on intermittently. I had the system checked at reynolds Ford, norman, ok in July. Recall of brake switch (09s09) on my 2002 Ford Windstar. They replaced the switch but I still have abs lights that come on periodically. It has not been completely fixed and the dealership says they will not cover it.

Brake warning & abs lights come on. I had the brakes checked and they said they were ok. . The lights come on and go off at will. No one seems to know what's wrong. I have heard of strange things happening. Like fires and accelerating.
2002 Ford Windstar keeps displaying check abs or check traction control on the message center. Then the abs or trac light turns on the dash. After car is restarted the messages go away. Will happen every once in a while. My mechanic just told me there is a faulty abs control module and sensor. I cannot afford to replace that. I read reports that this is a problem with the Windstar and a fire can result. My wife drives my 3 kids around in this vehicle.

Ford Windstar sel 2002 after approx 1 hr of driving, the brake and abs warning lights would illuminate and the check traction control message would flash on the information display. Problem would usually resolve after being left over night. The frequency of the intermittent failure would increase as weather got warmer.
