Brake Light On problems of the 2002 Ford Windstar - part 2

Abs and brake lights come on intermittently. I applied the brakes heavily and all 4 wheels locked up. The vehicle was uncontrollable while braking. The speedometer is erratic. The battery is dead sometimes after sitting overnight. The hazard lights come on by them selves. The door locks do not work properly. The tire indicator lights come on for no reason.

Abs and brake lights have been turning on intermittently, when on abs is not functional. Today on minimally slippery roads lights came on, abs needed at an icy stop sign, did not come on. Rear ended the car in front of me. No damage to other car, front bumper on my car now cracked. Abs still not working.

Abs and brake light are on, mostly stay on constantly. Braking distance suddenly increased. Brake pressure decreased also. Possible fire risk.

Brake lights were coming on so we took it to have it looked at and the said it was a bad wire for the anti lock brake system and said there has been a problem with these in other Windstars.

The abs, track off, brake light indicators, and check traction control intermittently illuminate. They remain on until the key is turned off, and then reset. The frequency is intermittent and not measurable. Initial checks have no results as the lights are out when checked by a repair shop.

Abs and brake light illuminated and experienced a burning electrical smell. Fuse#10 was popped and lost dash functionality. Went to Ford today 8-14-13 and had recall 09s09 work performed and that did not fix the problem. My wife and I believe their is a serious electrical problem with the abs electrical control module, due to issues related to the recall 09s09. We hope that the van does not erupt into a fire. We still can smell an electrical burning smell.

Our abs and brake lights are on. We had the brakes replaced, but they are still on. Our mechanic tells us it may be the abs control module, which they want over $1,000 to fix. We have read that this is a common problem with the Windstar and it may be related to a defective part other than the abs control module. Is there a recall on this item?.

While operating this van the abs/brake light will illuminate on the dash. This is an intermittent problem that sometimes comes on as soon as the vehicle is started, other times it will come on after driving for a mile or two. This causes the abs brake system to stop working and is a safety issue. I have had the codes checked many times and cleared with no other problems showing just to have it re-occur at a later time. It seems to be related to outside temperature. If it is really hot outside ( 90+ ) the light will come on quickly, when its cooler it may come on later in the day, or after driving further.

During normal driving both the brake warning light and the anti-lock brake warning light will come on and stay on. They don't always come on but if they do they don't shut off till you turn the ignition off. We never know if it's a real brake problem or just an electrical glitch.

Yellow abs light and red brake warning light came on. Abs system is no longer functional.

Abs and brake lights on dash on due to ecu and hcu failure.

Abs brake light came on, as well as the red brake light. Both lights come on and go off intermittently. Have had vehicle checked by mechanic and local Ford dealer. Dealer states codes c1185, c1194, c1198, c1210, c1214, c1242, c1246, c1250, c1254; will need ecu hcu 2f2z2c219ba and 2f2c296ac which is obsolete. Reports of this being a common problem with this vehicle and possible recall in future.

Abs and brake warning lights light up on dash. When car is turned off and then back on, warnings are no longer lit. Then they come back on later, at some random time. There does not seem to be a pattern or common situation, such as rain, etc.

Late April 28,2013 abs and emergency brake warning lights came on and stayed on. May 1,2013 van's speedometer quit working.

I was taking the kids to the park today for a birthday party and I notice my abs and my brake lights where on while driving. I pulled of to side of the road put the van in park and shut it off. I started the van an it was off this isn't the first time that this has happen. The first time that this has star was yesterday 4/20/2013 the van was in park and running for at least five minutes and they ( abs and brake lights ) came on did the same thing shut the van off and restarted it and they where off the other time was later that night at a drive-thru van in gear foot on the brake pedal and the lights was on ( abs and brake lights) don't know what is wrong but this need to get fix.

Vehicle brakes have failed on three different occasions in the last 4 months, road conditions have been wet on one occasion and dry on the other two. Abs and red brake light appear at the same time, but only intermittently. Dealership tells me it requires new electronic control unit and hydraulic control unit.

Abs and brake warning lights light up randomly and cruise control stops working. Main brakes still function. I see lots of similar complaints online. Had brakes repaired twice and the mechanic always mentions a loss of brake fluid. Even after that, the problem persists. I do not believe my VIN was ever part of the scds switch recall but I am suspicious this may be somehow related (?). If so, there could be risk of a fire and I do not feel safe. I'd like some answers before I spend any more money at local mechanic fixing this car. Calling Ford dealer tomorrow to see if there is anything they can do.

Abs and brake lights came on and stayed on until restarting engine. Problem could not be detected by several mechanics. The brakes are working ok, but the lights come on once in while independent of speed or hitting the brakes.

Brake and abs light on after vehicle is operated, parked briefly, and operated again. Problem occurs intermittently. Worse in hot weather. Problem has been on going for two years.

Battery light comes on periodically - driving home my radio shut off, abs brake light came on, dash lights dimmed then shut off, head lights began flashing, heater may have stopped (not sure, was focusing on the next road to pull off on), could not accelerate. I pulled over, shut off the van and waited. A few minutes later it turned over like nothing was wrong. This also happened to me about a month and a half ago.

Abs light and brake light on due to faulty abs module. The issue of the abs brake light is critical in that the abs brake system does not function as designed by Ford. The issue is caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. The expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. The code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185. Seen by us owners as a yellow abs brake light.

Driving on highway at normal road conditions when the abs and brake alert lights turned on. Vehicle was operational. Owners manual indicated that brake service was needed.

Hello, the abs light and e-brake light now come on and stay on for extended periods of time. Sometimes the lights will not come on, but then come on after I have been driving for a while.

The abs and the brake light both lit up and remained on. When cooler temperatures prevailed, the lights would then go out. This again has occured most recently on 08-30-2013. The following codes affected were c1185,c1198,c1194,c1254,c1246,c1250,c1214,c1210.

My abs light is on and will not go off and speedometer wouldn't work properly when the weather was really warm,and just September 21st 2012 my car was not able to switch out of park,and on oct. 18th 2012 my brake light stop working all together. I have research this problem and there is a recall out on Ford Windstar 1998-2003 with the same problems. But when I called Ford 10/22/12 they check my VIN and stated that there was not a recall on my car only Ford Windstar van with parts made in virginia. I don't understand why my car cant be repair at Ford expense when there is evidence that there I s a problem with the car.

Abs and brake lights on dash came on for first time while driving at 45 mph, not using brakes, they just came on. They have been going off and on intermittently since. Seems to happen more when the car is warm. Can turn the car on to warm up and the 2 lights will be off at start-up. After a few minutes, both abs and brake lights come on even though car is just idling and no one in the car! sometimes can drive 60 - 70 miles before the lights come on, sometimes they are on at start-up.

We parked the van at walmart and when we started it back up the abs and brake lights came on and stayed on until we shut down and restarted 2 times. It started doing it sporadically. We bought this van used, so we took it back to the dealership and they ran a diagnostic and said that nothing was showing up and just reset the system. The lights had stayed off until Sunday, October 14th; they are now starting to come back on sporadically.

The abs going off and on and the brake light is always on and I need to have this check out.

Neighbor came by early and told me the brake lights were on. I went out to inspect but didn't see them on. Got in the car an hour later and noticed smoke and horrible "electrical" smell. I checked the entire car, but found nothing, when I went to start it, the battery was dead. Had my friend give me a jump, hooked up cables and sat in the Windstar for a minute, I then heard crackling and immediately smelled smoke. Under closer examination I found it was the center, upper brake light assembly completely melted, bulbs were contorted. Had the assembly replaced with a Ford part from dealer, three days later it happened again, so I removed bulbs before it completely melted. The center "third" brake light does not shut off, even when car is off, 12, strong volts to bulb socket, on or off! left and right brake lights work fine. . . For now. I have no doubt my car would have completely been destroyed, had it not been for the battery going dead.

Brake and abs lights turn on at same time without an apparent cause, this happens after driving van 5 or less minutes at a low speed. Once the engine is turned off and restarted again, both lights remain off, and again, after driving the van for a short distance brake and abs lights come on again.

False abs activation; seemed to have no brakes for a bit. Ford dealership replaced wheel sensor. Also, abs and brake light on at times. Comes on for awhile, then off for days. Then comes back on. May be issue with abs unit, hydraulic control unit.

My wife just informed me that when the lights came on, she could feel the brakes be applied just a little on its own (without pressing the brake pedal) for about a second or two. Had the codes cleared and the same code came back on a short time later with same reaction from brakes.
