36 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. While driving approximately 40 mph the contact began to see smoke coming from the rear wheels. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where he was informed that the entire braking system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The failure and current mileages were 150,000.

37 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

There are continued repeated intermitent failures of the abs control module thus rendering the entire braking system and traction control system as unreliable. The incidents happen quite frequently and often appear related to the ambient air temperature. I have had my mechanics replace multiple wheel bearings and clear over 30 codes related to the the failure of this component. This is basically rendering my vehicle as a significant safety risk for me and my family.

38 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2010

I am having problems with my Ford 2002 Windstar antilock brakes and traction control system resulting in intermittent shutoff of the system and an increase in braking distance. The problems are increased in higher temperatures.

39 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2010

Braking distance suddenly increased.

40 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2010

While operating on an urban arterial road at approximately 35mph, the abs and brake system warning lights came on. Brake pedal travel when stopping seemed to be excessive compared to previous experience with the vehicle. Weather at time of the incident was clear and dry with temperature in the mid 80s. Abs and brake system warning lights remained on until vehicle was shut down. At next startup, approximately 1. 5 hours later, the warning lights did not come on, and brake operations seemed normal. Vehicle has been inspected and serviced under Ford motor company recall no. 09s09. However, I am unaware of the specific extent of service work performed by the dealer on this particular vehicle under that recall.

41 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

Braking distance suddenly increased abs problem.

42 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

Alarmwarning lights come on for abs airbag and speedmeter and tach fails.

43 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2010

Abs and traction control failed - lights on dash and "check trac ctrl" on dash readout. This caused accident under adverse conditions.

44 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2010

After having a cruise control safety recall done on our 2002 Ford Windstar, the "abs" light comes on and stays on most of the time now! I am assuming the "abs" system is not working and we might have a safety issue when it comes to emergency braking situations.

45 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

2002 Ford Windstar - had recall from oct 2009 (vehicle speed control) done on vehicle. Sometime the car will start and no issues appear in the driver instrument gauges other times the issue will appear at startup. If it is fine at startup, sometimes while driving (sometimes over bumps, sometimes just over time), the problem will appear. The problem is that the "brake", "abs", and "trac control" lights turn on, indicating a problem with the car's braking system. Car still brakes fine under normal conditions, but it appears that the abs system and traction control systems stop functioning resulting in the loss of those critical safety systems. Shutting the car off and restarting resets the system and everything is fine until it happens again. Problem is getting more regular, almost occurring every time we drive the car.

46 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

While driving at normal speeds the abs, brake and trac lights come on and stay on. The van was stopped and when restarted, the lights were off. This has repeated almost every day and continues until today. There are no codes and there seams to be no effect on the van (except maybe the anti lock brakes not working).

47 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2009

2002 Ford Windstar abs and brake lamp turn on intermittently. Both lights illuminate during some drive cycles, lights will remain on during the entire ignition cycle. Frequency of occurrence is once or twice per week dealership states that the abs control module needs to be replaced - - - approximately $800 repair bill , however dealer states that if the hydraulic unit mounting bolts break during removal to gain access to the abs unit then repair bill will be $1500. After receiving the repair estimate, the dealership informed me that they would have to order the parts. They stated that they could probably get the abs unit within 1-2 days but if the hydraulic unit needed to be replaced due to stripped or broken mounting bolts then they could not say when they could get the replacement part since it was listed on their system as "on major back order". In other words, if they break the hcu bolts my vehicle could be disabled indefinitely until repair parts were off back order. So as a consumer I'm faced with the choice of driving an unsafe vehicle or potentially having a disabled vehicle for several weeks or months - - - neither of these choices are acceptable. Research on the web shows that this is a common problem with these units. Obviously, failure of the abs unit raises a safety concern due to the increased risk of a serious accident. Ford motor company is well aware of this issue but chooses to charge their customers $1000+ repair bills instead of addressing the safety issue of defective abs units.

48 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2009

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that while driving 10 mph the abs lamp, torque converter lamp and the brake warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but not repaired or diagnosed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000 and current mileage was 65,000. Updated 10/06/11 updated 10/5/11.

49 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2009

Ford 2002 Windstar. In may 2009 the abs and brakes warning likes came on twice over the course of a couple of days. Took the van to our shop, but the lights had gone out. The shop thought it might just be a light problem. Lights remained out until August 2009. Both cam one intermittently. Took the van to the shop and this time it was determined that the abs control module is bad. Over the past week I have researched the problem and found it to be a potential future recall issues pending NHTSA finding.

50 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2009

Failure of the abs module on my 2002 Ford Windstar van.

51 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2009

Recently purchased 2002 Ford Windstar Mini van. Upon research found that the prevalent problems with this model could result in brake damage, fire, and loss of vehicle. Took vehicle in for brake diagnostic test and found that it has the same issue as many others of this model. Quoted $2100. 00 repairs. Why is Ford not recalling these vans?.

52 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

2002 Ford Windstar. Abs brake system warning lights on/off regularly. Heavy loss of brake fluid.

53 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2009

Brake, abs brake, cruise control, and speedometer/odometer electrical problems my dash lights are on and off all the time went to 3 mechanic they all checked my brakes, abs and could not find a problem it goes on whenever it wants stays on for weeks then comes back on while driving this has been doing for over a year. I even put stickers over the lights that I can see while driving. I still think there is a electrical wiring problem it is very annoying. I can not afford to get another vehicle . I see there are a lot of complaint about same problem my niece has one does the same thing and my brother in law in west virginia his is doing it too so I really thing Ford needs to check into this before someone's van catches fire or hurt some one.

54 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2009

Intermittent fault in the abs system that causes the abs and traction control system to disengage. Fault causes "abs" "brake" and trac off" indicators to turn on. Fault seems to happen more frequently in warmer temperatures.

55 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

The abs, brake, and trac active lights come on intermittently. They don't come on during some trips, come on during some trips and stay on until the car is turned off. Anytime the lights are on, the abs system does not work. Evidently this is caused by an aluminum plate that when warm (during summer months or after being driven for a while) expands and interferes with the connection.

56 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2009

The abs staying on.

57 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

I own a 2002 Ford Windstar that continues to have issues with the "brake" and "abs" lights lighting on my dash. This issue does not seem to affect stopping and is not constant but is intermittent. Not trouble codes are registered in the on board computer.

58 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2008

While driving brake, abs, traction control warning lights display on. . . On dash. Manual states while these warning lights are on abs and traction control systems are automatically disengaged. Ford dealership confirmed this. There is nothing wrong with brakes. Ford service told me either one or both of the following parts are malfunctioning- number 2f2z-2c219-CA-control module, and part number 1f2z-2b373-ba valve assembly. . . . . . . . . . . And that it is sensing a problem when there is none and shutting down the systems which can be dangerous. They told me they are seeing this "alot" with these vehicles. The parts are aprox 800. 00 a piece installed by Ford and dealership states "its getting hard to find used ones that work properly" bought the van used aprox 2 weeks ago and this has occurred 3 times. Service told me there is danger with these systems disengaged and there is a possibility that it could potentially alter even normal braking. The first two times it occurred the lights when off when I shut the vehicle off and turned it back on. The third time that did not work, but they were off when vehicle was restarted after sitting one day.

59 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

My 2002 Ford Windstar abs and trac active warning light currently on. No abs or traction control. Ford dealer says it is the abs control unit. Understand this is a common problem with these vehicles.

60 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. While driving between 45-55 mph, the engine began to lose power. The contact pulled into a Ford dealer and was informed that the brake cruise deactivation switch was leaking into the fuse box. The failure caused the speedometer to fail and the abs and several other lights to illuminate. Recall number 05528 (deactivation switch) was referenced regarding the Ford explorer. The current and failure mileages were 70,000. Update 09/10/08 updated 09/15/08.

61 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

2002 Ford Windstar brake pressure differential deactivation switch developed a leak resulting in significant brake fluid loss and deactivation of cruise control functionality.

62 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2008

The abs traction control system intermittently fails. During an unexpected heavy stop of on warmer days the abs traction control system stops responding and the warning light stating the system has been turn off, turns on. The vehicle has to be stopped, turned off then restarted for this to go away. It also has failed under normal driving conditions without braking on hotter days. This seems to be a dangerous problem.

63 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2008

Brake pressure switch leaks onto hot surfaces in engine compartment causing smoke.

64 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

Braking distance suddenly increased; abs module intermittently fails due to defective ecm module. This is a routine safety issue with Windstar vans that has not been addressed by Ford.

65 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that the abs, brake, and traction lights would illuminate intermittently while driving at all speeds. She took the vehicle to the dealer and the diagnostic produced error codes; however, they did not think that the failures were related to those codes. The dealer did not make any repairs and the manufacturer has not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 93,000 and failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

66 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2003

While driving at 20 mph,the driver stepped on the brake pedal and the brake pedal had a delayed reaction, which resulted in the vehicle hitting a wall head on. Dealer had been notified. When the first incident occurred, the brakes were engaged but did not stop the vehicle, the engine revved and the vehicle kept going. The vehicle had run into the corner of the flower wall of the stores sign. The second incident was similar, but the consumer was in a school zone at a stop sign and the engine revved, the consumer applied the brakes, the vehicle jumped but did not stop. Pressure was applied three times to the brakes, then the vehicle finally had come to a complete stop. The problem was unable to be duplicated.
