The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that the inner control arm on the steering wheel fell apart. The vehicle was uncontrollable and the left drivers side tire turned outward but the right passenger side tire would not move. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who will inspect it and replace the inner control arm. There was no warranty related to the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. 37 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/24/2011

2003 Ford Windstar rear control arm rusted. During the week of 01/24/11, our Windstar was taken in for a rear control arm failure. The unit was rusted and based on the recalls of the rear axel and now the front control arms, I am concerned this should be reviewed as well. The total failure of this part was causing the broken sections to rub against the fuel tank when going over bumps and turns.

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that someone else was driving the vehicle 60 mph when it began to feel unstable and then she lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who performed a diagnostic test that located the failure on the front control arm wire. The manufacturer advised that there was not a recall for the failure. The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that while driving 10 mph, he heard a loud noise and the front end dropped the right control arm which separated from the front subframe. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the subframe corrosion was the cause of the failure and could be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 55,000.

After routine maintenance while changing the tires on the right side of the vehicle the mechanic stated that the lower control arm was corroded and covered with rust. He was told to take the vehicle to the dealer who stated that it was unsafe to drive and the repair cost was $1200. There are no related recalls or warranties for this failure. The manufacturer confirmed that there were no recalls and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 145,000.

The subframe is rusting and corroding where the control arm attaches to it. My vehicle will not pass inspection. I have researched this online and have learned that NHTSA is investigating this on the Ford Windstar.

43 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 10/05/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Windstar. While driving approximately 1 mph, the contact heard a loud bang and the vehicle would no longer accelerate. Upon examining the vehicle, the contact noticed that the front passenger side wheel was pointed in the opposite direction of the front driver side wheel. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence; it had not been inspected or repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 132,000. The consumer stated even before the vehicle was towed the garage, he could see that the bracket that held the lower control arm to the frame had completely broken off the frame. When the control arm lost that attaching point, the wheel was allowed to pull away and also pulled the axle shaft away from the transmission. The subframe and transmission seal had to be replaced. The contact owns a 2000 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the lower control arm broke which caused a loss of control of the vehicle. The contact suffered back pains due to the loss of control. The contact pulled over and the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who stated that the subframe needed to be replaced. The passenger lower control arm on my 2000 Ford Windstar broke off while my wife was accelerating from a stop light. It was completely rusted and snapped off at the frame. Fortunately there was no collision and neither my wife and disabled daughter were injured. I had the sub frame and related components replaced at a cost of $1045. 00. I took photos of the rusted out sub frame.

She then lost control of the vehicle and was unable to stop until the vehicle coasted to a stop. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the lower control arm mount had rusted out causing separation of the arm of the axle. The vehicle was repaired. 1999 Ford Windstar, control arm broke off sub frame causing vehicle to come to a dead stop and front end to drop. There was no warning except the vehicle started to pull to the right a little. To fix the problem, had to replace sub frame. The bracket where the control arm should be was completely gone on the passenger side. . . . It was still together and intact on the drivers side. You lose total control and cannot steer the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Windstar. The contact attempted to drive out of the driveway when the front tie rod broke. The dealer had to replace the left tie rod, strut, upper strut and upper bearing because they were covered with rust. After the vehicle was repaired, the contact was driving and heard something snap in the front of the vehicle and then there was a loud banging sound. The dealer replaced the right front lower control arm because of rust. The contact feels that this was a defect because salt was not used on the road near his residence. The contact owns a 2001 Ford Windstar. While accelerating from a stop, the contact felt as if the vehicle had a flat tire. When he pulled the vehicle over, the front end dropped and he heard the fan striking the metal. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the front passenger side control arm mount rusted from the subframe and the engine cradle. The dealer replaced the engine cradle. : the contact stated while driving 50 mph a loud bang was heard. The vehicle then went out of control; going into a ditch, across the highway, and finally stopping in another ditch. While the caller's son was driving bout 65 mph the control arm separated from the sub frame, and the vehicle started to wobble. He pulled off the road and that is when the tire came loose. Vehicle had to be towed home. Dealer said they would do nothing for free. Manufacturer said the vehicle was out of warranty and offered no help for free.

While driving and having any movement in steering wheel there comes a loud spueaking noise from wheel, contacted dealer, and dealer noted that there could be some problems with ball joints.
