Most important is the brakes have been changed and checked. On several occasions the brakes have just failed and I would pump them enough just to get in a safe location. Aaa has had to pick me up and when the brakes where checked they were find and the fluid full. Also the rear just fell but I had that repaired by a local reputable shop on candler rd, decatur/ there is a residue all around where I put the gas in. I've had the same mechanic for almost 30 years and he says the anti-lock brakes may be faulty. The brake and engine light will not go out even when repairs are made according to the codes that come up. The scariest time was when I was driving on university Ave in atlanta and the car would not stop at the light at a normally busy intersection. I began blowing the horn and thank goodness no one was ahead of me. Aaa took their sweet time coming and by the time they got there the pedal was back up but I had them to tow me home anyways. My mechanic checked it and all was find but he was concerned and so was I. I did not contact Ford but it has happened again as I started it yesterday morning and the brakes were on the floor. This is just too dangerous. I told my mechanic not to come check it before contacting Ford.

I had the recall done on my Windstar, and up until then I had never had a problem. . . Now I have gone to work twice(night shift) and my van failed, first the inside lights go dim on the dash(all but the abs) the the radio goes and the my head lights, tail lights, horn, windows nothing works and then my car stops. . . I have not had a crash , but as I just discribed I am surly on my way. I replaced the battery first thinking that could be it,Jan-5-2010 and two days later Jan-7-2010 I am finding myself once again drivng without light and my car stopping in the middle of the road, and that (abs) light on.

The brake pressure cruise deactivation switch on my 2002 Windstar has leaked brake fluid down onto the wiring below the brake master cylinder. I have purchased the replacement switch from my nearest Ford dealer. But now my cruise control does not work, and the horn does not work, and the abs and brake warning lights come on intermittently.

My 2001 Ford Windstar has broken through 2 rear axles! also the interior lights blink on and off as I am driving and sometimes come on and stay on and while turned off will sometimes drain the battery and the headlights and hazard lights will blink on and off and the horn will beep. Also at times my power windows will not function.
My abs brake light came on, but all of my sensor lights have been malfunctioning. They couldn't find anything wrong; just said it was a bad sensor. Then the cruise control quit working. Last week my brakes locked up on me and I almost hit a school bus. I took the van in and the mechanic said there was a leak in the break line caused by the electrical system that caused everything to fail that had been recalled by Ford. We contacted Ford and they said there was no recall they said they only recalled this part on f150s. This is a major problem the mechanic said. We had two fuses to blow the horn won't work; the electrical system is going haywire. The thing that concerns me the most is the brake system, but they say it is all related. We are having it repaired now. When I locked up my brakes I balled two brand new tires so now I have to buy two new tires that are less than 4 months old, because Ford refuses to fix this problem.
The contact owns a 1996 Ford Windstar. He heard the horn blowing while he was inside his home and the dashboard was on fire. There were no injuries. The police was not notified and there are no photos available. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 153000.

Last week, my parents were driving my 2003 Ford Windstar home from breakfast with friends. The friends were following them home, when they saw fire coming from the bottom of the van. They immediately began honking their horn to get my parents to pull over. My dad stopped the van they franticly got themselves and my 4 and 6 year old children out of the van. Within 3-4 minutes of everyone getting out, the van was completely engulfed in flames. And the van was reduced to just metal with in less than 10 minutes. We do not know the reason the fire started at this point, but do know that this has been happening with Ford vehicles over the past few years.

I have had a lot of electrical problems with my 1999 Windstar se. The inside fan goes on when opening/closing doors, lights flicker off and on, for no apparent reason, my master cylinder leaks and I have had abs problems. We've replaced the rack and pinion three times. I love my van, but it has a lot of problems. The horn only works on occasion which caused me to be backed into!.

Caller was concerned about cruise control burning up. He might have had it fixed, but he didn't know for sure. Caller said cruise control would not work, and then the horn would not work. Dealer replaced the steering column. That is all the caller thinks the dealer did. Consumer feels vehicle had a defective cruise control and should be included in recall.
I owned a 2000 Ford Windstar. The passenger rear door would, upon closing, slide back open frequently. The dealership constantly said nothing was wrong. Finally, we traded in on a 2002 Ford Windstar. Within 1 week of purchase the passenger sliding door began sliding back open upon closing - and would jerk back once closed. We have had it worked on 3 different times. It closes now, but has a rattle in it when driving and when the weather changes it makes loud noises when opening and closing. Once in a while, upon cold start, the cd player will constantly rotate back and forth - while radio is on or off-until I turn car off and open driver door. When parking, I can open driver door, push lock button, then push unlock button - get out and close door. The security system will flash, indicating activation. Keep in mind, the car is uplocked. If I open a door, the horn will begin blowing. As you can see, we have had out fill of Ford. This is a company car and the entire mangement staff is fed up.
Horn is very hard to activate. I see that many people have already filed this complaint, but I don't see any action taken. Ford has sold a car with a useless horn, which must be in violation of some safety regulation.
The horn is near impossible to activate in an emergency and even not in an emergency.
The horn button is difficult to locate and push. In emergency situations, may not be able to blow the horn in time to help avoid a bad situation. I selected a date below because it is required. Thisis not an actual event date. This is an ongoing problem.
Horn will only blow if horn is hit at direct center and with a lot of force. Consumer was run off the road by another vehicle since she was unable to locate spot for horn.
Consumer stated the horn was not loud enough. (lawyer, daniel uhlfelder).
Consumer states he has never been able to activate horn, have been unable to activate during dangerous near-crash situations.
Contacts for horn are difficult to locate, and they are very hard to push to sound horn.
Driver must search for right place to push for horn to work.
On the 21st of Dec 99, my wife was involved in an accident in our Windstar. This accident could have been avoided if the horn were useable. The way the horn button is now you will have a difficult time trying to find the exact spot to push to get the horn to sound. When time is critical in the outcome, searching for that exact spot isn't a player. This was the case on the 21st. When an individual tried to cross the highway he hit our van on the right side causing $6500 in damage. Prior to the impact she tried to hit the horn but could not find it when it was needed most. We are almost 100% positive that if she could have found the horn she could have sounded it, and the other driver would have seen her coming. Luckily my 18 month old and 5 yr old daughters were not with her at the time. Now I have a $30,000 minivan that will never be of any value again. Sure it will be fixed, but who would ever want a vehicle like that that has had extensive damage. I guess thats my loss though.
Horn delay equivalent to a delay in the brake system. Upgraded by Ford from outgariously slow to terriblely slow. Useless in a parking lot. Ineffective in traffic because of lack of timely response. A horn is a safety device used as warning system. It is ineffective because it is time delayed even after an upgrade. I get angry and frustrated every time I try to use it.
Ongoing problem with the design of horn which has a delayed reaction when needed. Confirmed this in two diffeerent vehicles ( same model and year). Seeking NHTSA help in this matter or provide additional information. * mjs.
Horn does not work unless you hit it with a sledge hammer. Multiple near accident misses.
The horn is very hard to blow at times of need. And not really easy accessible.
Horn is very hard to press, and at night symbol is very difficult to see. Contacted dealer, and dealer noted that problem is normal for a vehicle.
Seatback spring is too strong. The seatback swings forward when handle is pulled. Dealer aware of problem. Cannot remedy the problem. , and problem still exists. Also, horn in center of steering wheel, censor in horn is too small, causing difficulty in use of horn. Proviide further information.
Other Windstar owners are stopping and asking me if my horn works. Apparently many owners of 1999 Windstars are experiencing horn failures. It is almost impossible to sound the horn. The demmer Ford rep. (phil) said he called the oakville assembly plant and they are aware of the problem. He said a fix might be in the works in another 90 days--unacceptable!.
While driving down the road had to blow the horn, it didn't work. Contacted dealer ,nothing could be done. Consumer would have to take eyes off the road to find a spot on the steering wheel to sound the horn.
I have been told by the dealership that these problems are identical on all models coming in, including the expedition. The horn does not work and they "cannot fix it. ".
There are two problems with the horn in the 1999 Windstar. First, the horn requires extraordinary pressure in order to get it to sound. This is very dangerous in an emergency situation where one needs a quick sounding of the horn. Second, a large area of the steering wheel where one would expect to be able to sound the horn does not sound it. Specifically, the area most likely pressed in an emergency, the upper portion of the center of the wheel, has no horn action. The part of the wheel to which I am referring is top of the center "hub area" which faces the driver. I took the Windstar to campus Ford, okemos, michigan. The service department told me that there was nothing they could do because "they all work that way. " in my opinion, the horn problem, especially the areas of the steering wheel hub that have no horn action, represent a safety hazard to vehicle owners.
Horn hard to actvate in an emergency situation requires to much down force and to spacific an area to depress, horn once acivated continues to sound for about 2 seconds after activation.
Horn is continually shorting out due to electrical failure which is also causing power window and door latch failure.
Horn sensor is extremely difficult to locate in an emergency.
To avoid an accident conusmer depressed horn buttons, and horn would not sound. Consumer stated horn buttons have to be depressed very hard to sound. The design of the horn and steering wheel assembly does not provide effective access to horn in emergency situations. Also, turn signal does not properly engage on curved road ways.
It is very difficult to depress the horn pad/button. Dealership is unable to fix due to configuration.
