Tire Problems of Ford Windstar - part 1

Dot# plx05jhr4007, m6x05jhr2008/0708 goodyear assurance comfortred 225/60r16 tires. Separated by splitting on first semi rim/tread groove. Improper design to have groove there. Tread grooves today are now closer to center of tire because of the less flexing compared to the assurances rim groove too close to the rim. It splits and separates. Bad design flaw. Tires in question have 8 and 9/32 of tread remaining.

Driving the vehicle became uncomfortable at both low and high speed; therefore, I started investigating to try to identify the cause. 1st I found one of the rear shocks was very bouncy, the rear tires were not straight and both rear tires were wearing on the inside. Replaced both rear shocks. That didn't solve the problem and the rear tires were still not straight. Next I went to mike naughton Ford dealership and talked with a service representative about the problem and asked if there was a recall. The technician said that I needed to bring the vehicle in for an alignment and have the rear cambers shimmied so that the wheels would be straight at a estimate cost of $200. 00, that there were no recalls to have this work done. Last night (10-13-2013), I jacked the vehicle up to look under to see how difficult it would be to perform the work myself. I decided that I would take the vehicle to Ford and pay them to do the work. I was jacking the vehicle up to remove the jack stance and both tires fell almost to the floor. I look under the vehicle to identify what happened and found the axle housing bent/broken in half. It appears that it has been cracked/broken for some time because the initial break was rusty. Have not been able to follow-up with the Ford dealer yet - I believe that the service department might be closed today (columbus day) because I haven't been able to reach anyone by phone.

Goodyear assurance touring tires dot lot identifier: mdxo jd1r 4109 size: p225 60 r16 purchased at sam's club, December 2010. I got four (4) of these tires on my 2002 Ford Windstar van, on December 23, 2010. Early in 2011, Ford had my van for six (6) months (fixing several Ford recalls with axles and suspension) so the tires didn't get much mileage until later in 2011. In 2012, I had one of the tires separate into chunks on the highway. There was no other damage, except the tire was history. I had it replaced with another tire of the same type/model. In July of 2013, I had two (2) more of the tires replaced because they were "cupping" and out of round. I had the van checked for camber, caster, and toe-in, and it was up to factory specs. No alignment necessary and tires were maintained with correct pressure. Today, (09/05/2013) I am having the 4th tire replaced, because it is becoming "out of round" and "cupping" (I believe). This failure causes a vibration that you would not believe. The last time sam's club replaced the tires (just two months ago in July 2013) the installer said that they "have had a lot of these tires spontaneously destroy themselves", and they opted to put goodyear assurance "fuel max" tires on, in lieu of the discontinued "touring" model. I checked goodyear's website, and the "touring" model is in fact, not discontinued. Maybe sam's club just stopped getting them because they're tired of replacing them? if sam's club has no confidence in the touring model (and is opting to replace them with the fuel max model) I am beginning to think that the last touring model tire (replaced in 2012) may destroy itself, as well.

Traveling 70 mph on the front driver side tire, rim, and all lugnuts just flew off. I went into a ditch. Major damage. I am discovering that this is a common issue with these vans and I plan to sue Ford.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Windstar. The vehicle has brigadier/reynolds touring xt plus tires, size p215/70r15 97t. While the vehicle was parked in the driveway, the contact noticed that the rear driver's side tire was flat and the steel belts were visible. The tires were purchased in April of 2008. The dealer was not notified. The contact stated that the tread depth was still in tact. The dot and VIN were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 130,000. Pep boys touring se tire separation. While traveling on the highway at 70 mph the tire separated causing temporary loss of control. The separating tread caused $2,500 in damage to the vehicle. All four tires were purchased from pepboys, sierra vista, az 85635, oct 2004 and have approximately 10,000 miles on them. It appears that the other front tire may be getting ready to separate because I am getting the same feel in the steering wheel that I experienced before the first tire failed. Pepboys of yuma, az prorated the failed tire and mounted the replacement tire.

- the contact stated that while driving his 1998 Ford winstar at 35 mph on June 26, 2005 the passenger side front tire came off the vehicle and fell to the ground, the vehicle ran over the tire. On January 15, 2007 the passenger side front tire fell off and went behind the vehicle then hit a fence across the road. The front passenger side went into the ground and the vehicle spun around once and came to a complete stop. The vehicle was towed and repaired on both occasions.

- while driving at about 65 mph on 12/26/06 the contact heard a loud noise. He proceeded to pull the vehicle over to side of the road and noticed it had a flat tire. The contact stated that the road conditions were good and the evening was clear. The contact said that he then returned home and inspected the tire and found no punctures in it, but did notice a bump in the tire. The contact stated he took tire to firestone tire center the next morning , and the technician said that the tire was punctured by a nail, but there was no nail in the tire. The technician did show him an imprint of the nail on the inside of the tire. The contact called to find out if this tire had any safety issues. The information on the tire was: 214/65r16, model # fr380 and dot# w26v38b2306. The contact has the damaged tire, and firestone did replace it with a new tire. The technician told the contact that they had to scrap the inside of tire and clean it up before they gave the damaged tire back. Updated 02/06/07.

Blowout on highway on (goodyear viva touring )purchased at walmart washington missouri. Incurred $377. 00 bill, new tire and towing bill. Neither goodyear or wal mart will take responsibility. Wife and daughter in vehicle thank god nobody was hurt. Blowout in 2002 Ford Windstar, less than 15,000 on tire. Thank you.

: the contact stated while in a parking lot, the vehicle's tire was observed to be releasing air from the stem. When the contact attempted to put air into the tire, the air was releasing from the stem faster than the tire could be filled with air. The vehicle was towed to cosco where all 4 tires had been purchased 2-3 years ago. The tire's stem was replaced. A representative at the cosco mentioned that the tire repaired was from a defective batch of tires. On 7/23/06, while driving 65 mph on a highway, a loud noise was heard. Once the vehicle was pulled over another tire was flat and observed to be releasing air expediently from the stem.

: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked for six hours, the left front tire exploded. Also, the tread had separated. The dealership inspected the tire and determined the contact over inflated the tire, resulting in the tire exploding. The dealership replaced the tire, but refused to give the damaged tire back to the contact. The tire was size: p21570r15. The brand name was an all season cooper dominator.

While driving my 2002 Ford Windstar I noticed that there was some vibration coming from the front of the car. Once I pulled into our hotel I notice a rattling coming from the left front hub cap. When I pulled the hubcap off three of the lug nut suds were sheared off. Ford fixed the problem but could not tell me why this happened. Thier theory is that the tire was not properly put back on. The only time the tire was off was in July of 2002. My feeling is that if the wheel was not put on properly it would not take a year to notice. I may be wrong but I want to bring this to your attention in case there any other instances of this happening. Thank you.

While driving 10 mph the vehicles right front tire fell off.

Tires were replaced with wrong size by 2 separate dealers causing tire sensor light to be on . After over 25 service visits problem discovered . Dealer sent home with known safety problem "would not correct properly" 4 days later accident resulted.

Purchased 2 cooper trendsetter se tires, tire identification no. 2utm3c2j4702, on January 17, 2003. Since that time, tires have not held air and have suffered loss of trend and traction causing a dangerous condition. Returned to retailer in March of 2005 and tires were taken off and resealed at a cost of $15. 00 but tires still continue to loss air. Since the date of purchase, only 23,000 have been put on these tires.

Had a flat tire and found a 3" slit of dry rot and when store insp. My tires, three were dry rotted with the 4th on the borderline. This was a very dangerous situation for my family and I. We had just been on the interstate doing 65 mph with these tires. How many more families are riding on these type of tires?.

All 4 tires cracked between the treads and were delaminating.

At approximately 7:20pm on Wednesday evening, August 22, 2001, I was traveling at the speed limit, 75mph, south on interstate 70, near richfield, ut, when, without warning, the left front tire delaminated. I managed to keep control of my vehicle and got it to the right shoulder of the highway. The tire's tread was completely gone, having deformed, blackened and taken paint off the left front fender, detached the left portion of the bumper from the fender, destroying and casting away the majority of the inner fender skirt, badly denting the rear portion of the wheel well/fender, and shredding the mud guard there to the extent that most of it had to be cut off later. The tire continued to hold air though so I was able to creep along the shoulder the approximately one mile to the first richfield exit. I parked in the parking lot of a large gas station just off the interstate and got the by-now-deflated-DE-laminated tire off the vehicle, and the "spare" tire on in its place. I then proceeded into richfield where I found a tire dealer who was willing to sell, mount, balance and install two replacement tires for me, charging me a $55 "after hours" fee in addition to the price of the two tires. The Ford dealer in richfield, the following morning, gave me little hope that michelin would accept responsibility for the incident, and there was no michelin dealer in richfield that I could contact. Since returning home last Friday, I have not had a chance to get estimates for repairs, but, knowing what similar repairs have cost friends, my own estimate is between $300 and $500 for the actual repairs to my vehicle, plus the cost of the replacement tires/after hours charge ($189. 96). I feel that I was exceedingly lucky to have been driving straight at the time of the DE-lamination; to have had both hands on the wheel; and to have had very little traffic around me which could have prevented me from making a safe maneuver to the side of the highway.

Purchased what thought were new tires from american tire deport in 2001. Had a blow-out on one rear tire in July. Had a blowout with second rear tire two weeks later. When went to replace from another dealer, was told that what I thought were new tires were actually seconds. . . . Have second tire to show the defect. . . Tires had less than 25,000 miles on at time of blowout. Need to know who to file complaint with. Both for tire and for american tire depot for selling seconds as new.

Purchased tire from t & t tire on 6/23/2000. Tire separation at 75 mph. Store sold tire to me as new when it was 9 years old. Michelin is working with me on it but store owner doesn't seem to feel that he is responsible for damage done to vehicle and future debts to be assessed to get body damage repaired. Do not feel this is right and would like to see changes made to hold the store owner liable for all damages when knowingly sell a tire that should have been removed from stock. Right passenger's side tire veered to right. Dealership was aware of problem. Had tires replaced with brand new ones. Dealership changed the tires to left.

Front left firestone tire on Ford, Windstar, 1998 blewout. Firestone fr680 p205/70r15, dot# e4027490, consumer received notification from claims precessing stating consumer would receive a decision within 30 days, however has heard nothing, consumer states 1 person was injured.

On August 16, 2000 I was the victim of a minor automobile accident that occurred when a new fr440 tuwsps21570r15 tire, purchased on may 22, 2000 and located on the front right side of the vehicle, explicably burst while I was traveling around a corner at a low rate of speed. My minivan slid off the side of the road and into a tree, doing damage to the body and the frame. The tire was so shredded after sliding off the road it was impossible to tell what caused it to burst. However, I had purchased road hazard insurance on the tires (after replacing tires I had just bought in April that were punctured by a sharp stone). A firestone tire center would not fix the damage caused in the accident and I was forced to utilize insurance to repair the damage. The tire had approximately 5,000 miles in usage when it burst. My tire problems were reported to firestone and their response was to blame low air pressure or not to respond at all I have replaced all the firestone tires on my motorhome with another brand, out of 8 tires, five came apart, I would suggest anyone with a firestone tire problem, try a different brand( dot number: tire size: 225/75/16 ).

Tires are goodyear integrity. Consumer had all four tires fail on four different occasions.

Four tirerims have cracks on them, causing tires to leak air at all times.

Had two tires worn to steel belt within 3 months in same location. Ford says its the tires! it seems odd to me that 2 tires in same location would wear down to belt in same spot .
