Failure(premature tread seperation) on 07/24/2005 at 10:30 pm my husband and I were in our 2003 Ford Windstar( on hwy 65) when we eperianced a blow out, we were traveling at the posted speed and there were no obstructions in the road. Upon investigation of the tire ( ameri gs60 p215/70/r15) we discovered complete seperation of tread right down the middle of the tire(causing damage to gas spicit, a rear water line, bumper damage, complete removal of the d-side rear wheel well shield) we found this odd because tire had much tread left also tires were rotated at local wal mart only less than 6-months.

2 ameri-gs60 tires failed on our Ford Windstar within 2 months. First incident in mid April. Front driver side tread separated at 55mph. Outside temp approx 70 degrees. Tire remained inflated long enough to reach nearby discount tire. They replaced it at no charge and kept tire. Second incident on same vehicle on 6/8/2002 at 75mph on driver rear tire. Outside temp approx 75 degrees. Threw tread and tire went flat sending van out of control across lane of traffic on interstate. No accident, but departing tread ruined wheel well, bumper, and rear fender. Also lodged piece of tread above gas line and pulled gas filler spout partially through the fender and broke off gas cap. No injuries. I have remainder of tire and portion of tread. Cost $120 tow plus yet to be determined (my guess $1500-$1800 damage) as well as costs (if any) of replacing other 3 ameri-gs60 tires that I refuse to leave on car after first 2 failures!.

I noticed recently a vibration in the steering wheel while driving. From past experience, I thought one of the tires needed balancing, since I did not feel any problems with the brake rotors. I went to have the tires checked, and the goodyear dealer said the tires had a defect in the belts. He recommended replacing all 4 tires, because he said they all looked bad. I made an appointment for the next day (10/12/01) to have them replaced, but wouldn't you know it, I went to drive to work on the freeway on 10/11/01 and the rear passenger side tire blew up. I think that goodyear should replace these tires at "no charge" instead of pro-rating them, but that probably won't happen without a recall right? I would not want this to happen to anybody else driving on the freeway. What if they have bad tires, but did not notice any vibration like I did? can these tires blow up without any warning to other drivers? (tiresize: p215 70r15).

My failed tires caused me to have to buy 4 brand new tires, even though the problem was a factory defect. We did not get into an accident - yet. These tires should be recalled if they are not safe. I believe you should add the firestone tires that were standard equipment on the 1998 Windstar to your investigation. The circumstances seem pretty similar. Our tire shredded on highway at 70 mph . Tread wrapped around rear axle. Fortunately I was able to get the car to the side of the road and there were no injuries but this occured in a rural area in 100 degree weather. If not for mobile phone and service we could have died of heat stroke. Car was towed by aaa to sheridan, wyoming goodyear dealer. We were told that it was definite tire failure. Firestone dealer in las vegas examined tread and refused to replace at no charge or admit defect. After many calls and complaints, firestone customer service finally refunded us $40. 00 and nothing towards the towing or other costs involved. ( dot number: tire size: p20570rx15 ).
