The weight on the keyring and road conditions or a jarring event causes the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. The vehicle will not stay in the run position and there are no other mechanical/electrical problems with the vehicle. This began about a year ago and has progressively got worse. This is similar to the recall of GMC's Cadillac cts.

My 2005 GMC Canyon continues to have issues with the passlock ii system. No modifications have been made to the ignition switch, keys, or any other electrical system. The passlock prevents me from starting my truck because for some reason the computer thinks it is trying to be stolen. The last time this issue occured, my truck was parked in my garage. When attempted to start, the truck cranked but did not start and the passlock light came on. I had to sit and wait for 10 minutes until the light went off. The problem was I was trying to drive myself to the emergency room because I had just been bitten by a dog.

Passlock system this has been going on over the last three years and now getting worse and is intermittent, when I insert and turn the key something happens making the theft system activate and keeps the vehicle from starting for exactly 10 minutes. Recently I turned the truck off to save gas while I was in construction traffic at a stand still with a concrete barrier on both sides and the truck would not start and the police were going to have me towed, luckily at started at 10 minutes before the tow truck came. In my opinion this can be unsafe in emergency situations if the vehicle is needed for any type of emergency. Below I am pasting something from the web, but it is basically the problem that I and people all over the country are having. "thousands of people are being led in circles by any vehicle with a passlock ii system and it is an unsafe problem with these cars that needs to be fixed. It prevents vehicles from restarting in potentially dangerous areas while the vehicle resets and can permanently disable the car if not addressed. The problem lies in a design oversight and cutting a material cost by putting in a cheap component that any basic chemist could tell you would go bad within a year or two. Change your ignition switch contact from nickel to gold plated connectors and oxidation will not cause faulty readings to trick your vehicles into thinking that they are being stolen and shutting off the fuel pumps. Remuneration for individuals impacted by this financial burden for the purchase of your vehicles is also a request as this problem is a gold mine for car mechanics, both gm certified and freelance, to troubleshoot numerous systems before identifying the problem proper. It appears my ignition switch is defective. The passlock system engages for no reason and shuts off/disable ignition switch. If the folks reading this complaint researches ignition problems/passlock system on the internet, the dot will discover more information about this defect. I am available to help. Contact me anytime at h. (770) 631-0294. It appears ther ignition switch may corrode and/or have defective contact that short out the switch. Gm says my defect is rare and would not help me with the costs. I paid for the repair in order to avoid a tragedy, like my wife of 31 years or my grandkids dying in my defect Canyon. Thank you.

Got recall notice in late 2014 early 2015 notice of recall on truck for ignition switch. I have owned the truck since I bought it in 2004. I got a recall notice in the time frame above to bring it in. I took it to then stanly GMC in sherman texas, now parkway GMC. The parts manager said because I was outside the mileage there was nothing they could do. To day I saw an article in our newspaper about the poor recall percentage on your notices. I took mine in as the article said you would like me to do. The service manager at that time made me feel like I was a nuisance. I have had no problem yet and intend to keep the truck for another 10 years or so. If I do ever decide to trade for a new truck I'll keep this event in mind. I'm 72 and would like to know why you put a limit on the time before the recall expires. A problem can be a problem no matter how old the truc or car is as long as the original owner has it. Thank you j. B. Webb.

Vehicle caught fire for no apparent reason while parked in the driveway and was completely destroyed. We believe there was an electrical problem in the steering column because we had slight difficulties with the ignition switch.
