After waiting my turn to pay a toll on the ohio turnpike exit in toledo, the van did not stop when I applied the brakes and I ran into the back of the car ahead of me. My van brakes had been working as we eased up to the toll both with about 6 cars ahead of me. I had my foot on the brakes the whole time. When I was second on line, I eased up on the brakes. But, the van would not stop even though I stomped on the brakes twice very hard, it stil would not stop.

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 GMC Savana

Failure Date: 09/19/2010

When towing a trailer with my 1 ton gm van down hill and braking the front end shakes almost uncontrollably. The manufacturer knows about it as they have it in the owners manual. They claim the brakes get hot and to down shift the van. They also say failure to do so could result in a complete loss of brakes and a crash. Gm tech says on my repair order that when brakes get hot they will pulsate then when they cool they go back to normal. Per tac no repairs at this time case [xxx]. . . [xxx]. All 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1 ton vans are in this category as no specific model of Savana/express was mentioned in the owners manual. Obviously a design flaw they knew about in the beginning and chose not to do anything about it. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 GMC Savana

Failure Date: 05/24/2010

Intermittent brake lock up on 2007 GMC Savana 2500 cargo van. The pedal feels hard to push and the vehicle will not slow. More pressure applied to the brake pedal then the front brakes lock up completely. This happened twice at low speeds and once at freeway speed. Very fortunate that other drivers were able to avoid a truck skidding to a stop on the freeway. Turning the vehicle off for five minutes seems to allow the system to function again temporarily. Dealership reports "leaking hydroboost" unit is the problem. This is the second failure of this part in our 15 truck fleet, although the earlier failure did not cause brake lock-up.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2000 GMC Savana

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

The contact owns a 2000 GMC sierra 2500. The contact stated that while driving at 5 mph and pulling up to his driveway he tried to unlock the doors of vehicle and they would not unlock. He was also unable to unlock the doors with the remote. He then tried to unlock the vehicle from the outside to no avail. This failure only occurs on the drivers side. The dealer was contacted and they stated to bring the vehicle in to be diagnosed. He then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic. It took 1 hour to open the door , they took the door apart and removed the electrical half of the mechanism and replaced it and then it finally worked. The part was ordered from the GMC dealer. There is another problem with the anti lock brake system where he is driving 5 mph when making a turn and stepping on the brakes the brakes do not engage. He has to put the vehicle in neutral for the vehicle to stop. GMC was contacted and they stated that they will repair the whole brake system at the owners expense . There have been no repairs at the time of the complaint for the brakes. The failure mileage was 116900 and current mileage was 117000.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 GMC Savana

Failure Date: 02/10/2009

The contact had to use maximum effort in order for the brakes to catch. His VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 05v043000. The failure and current mileages were less than 87,927.

13 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 GMC Savana

Failure Date: 07/02/2008

Foot brake is not functioning if parked on a grade greater than 8 degrees. As always, foot brake only applied after the gear is shifted on park. I didn't discover the foot brake is not properly function until several years after purchase. It seems the foot brake was not adjusted at all before the vehicle left the factory. If I have the gear set on neutral on driveway, only apply the foot brake, vehicle rolls by itself.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2000 GMC Savana

Failure Date: 11/07/2007

When coming to a full stop in light to moderate 35 to 40 mile an hour traffic zones , usually when making a right hand turn, the brake pedal would over travel almost to the floor, their would be a loud scrubbing sound. This happened a few years ago, and I took my van to three separate gm authorized dealers/ repair shops on three separate occasions and they told me that their was nothing wrong with my brakes. This was vary frustrating. So I took it to a local shop and they discovered that the right rear parking brake was activated and would not release. They fixed the problem by disconnecting the parking brake control cable to the right rear brake drum. The problem was fixed except now I had no parking brakes! since that time I had become disabled and the van sat on my property for a couple of years. Until it was time to take it for a state required emissions test. I took the van to a local mechanic that was also certified by the state to make the van pass the test. He told me that I had a brake cable disconnected, I told him why. He told me he could fixed the problem, and he did every thing worked gust fine, and here I am a year later facing the same problem. There has to be a problem with either the cable rusting and when someone applies the parking brake the right rear drum will not release, or somethings wrong with the drum brakes. The last time the van was used by my daughter, she has been trained to operate big box ambulances, she is an emt, so I don't think she would drive improperly, and I would also take her work about the malfunctioning brakes. All I can say is here I go again. By the way this vehicle has very low mileage, looks and functions like a new van except for this brake problem that keeps reoccurring. Make me afraid to let any one use it, even if they been trained to handle larger vehicles.
