Brake Electric Antilock problems of the 1997 GMC Sierra

25 problems related to brake electric antilock have been reported for the 1997 GMC Sierra. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2006

: the contact stated the abs engaged at speeds of 10mph and below. As a result, the stopping distance was increased. There is a NHTSA recall # 05v379000 concerning the abs. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection, but no repairs were made.

2 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2006

: the contact stated the anti-lock brakes engaged at 10 mph. There is a NHTSA recall, # 05v379000, regarding the anti-lock brakes. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. The serpentine belt was replaced. Updated 03/17/06.

3 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2005

Anti-lock brake system activates at low speed and the truck will not stop. The "brake" light stays lit on the dashboard. I understand many GMC trucks were recalled for this same exact problem, but it begins with trucks a couple of years newer than my 1997 Sierra truck.

4 Brake Electric Antilock problem

When applying the brakes during normal stopping vehicle continued to roll while the brakes were applied. Brakes had to be pump several times to get the vehicle to stop. Vehicle has been to the dealer on four separate occasions, and they were unable to locate the problem.

Anti lock brakes activate at low speeds and for no apparent reason (weather related or other). Defect discovered several months before repairs were made at superior GMC in brighton in September 2005. Vehicle has less than 23000 miles and is used for leisure purposes. Current gm recall for identical problem does not include 1997 although defect is identical. It is an ongoing problem and therefore the number of failures documented below is an estimate.

6 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Antilock brakes continually seize up and the vehicle continues to roll forward at slow rates of speed. Exact same problem we had with our 2002 chevy avalanche that was just fixed under recall 12/05.

Anti-skid system on the vehicle will automatically activate. Also, there will be extended stopping distance.

While driving at 25 mph and upon applying brakes they felt as if they were braking. However, brakes locked up, causing vehicle to go into a skid, and resulting in an accident. Consumer has contacted dealer. Please provide any further information.

Accelerator cable was badly frayed and coming apart. Vehicle suddenly accelerated while driving. Vehicle would not stop right away after brakes were applied. Engine kept revving.

Consumer has multiple problems with vehicle. Bearings in the drivetrain are defective/ alignment/brakes repaired/rear end replaced, and other problems developed due to the bearing. An authorized GMC repairman told consumer that's the way GMC makes vehicles. Consuemr insisted that has had nothing but bad expriences with the vehicle, and manufacturer.

When braking a little harder than normal brake pedal went completely to the floorboard, and there was no stopping ability, causing a rear crash. The vehicle is being repaired. Please provide any further information.

When first purchased, we contacted gm. We have taken it to 2 shops, but they say nothing is wrong. Our warrenty is about to expire, and now the brakes, all 4 are completely locking up when going slow. It pulled and gripped previously when driving down the highway etc. This is when it was firt reported. We can not get any help, and are quite aggravated considering this truck only has 28,000 miles!! we need your help with this saftety defect ASAP> it is sitting in our driveway now, probably not safe to drive. We would like a response ASAP, or will contact a lawyer.

Consumer experienced problem with vehicle left rear wheel lock up only in wet condition; dealer notified and some repair was made, but consumer believed this condition should be look into before someone get hurt. Seeking nhsta for help in this matter.

When driving at any speed steering is jumping and jerking. When applying the brakes, it feels like pressure is within the brakes until consumer hits a bump and the pressure will go away.

When appyling the abs brakes the pedal traveled to the floor, causing extended stopping distance, which resulted in a collision.

Abs brakes would lock up when applied during rainy weather or heavy dew on the ground. Brakes got worse. Took to dealer 5-6 times. Problem not duplicated.

When parking the vehicle over night, when there is extreme moisture present upon releasing the emergency parking brake, the rear brakes are locked. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has not replaced any parts.

When applying the brakes at appoximately 40 mph, the abs system would lock up for no reason when hitting a bump, causing vehicle to slid which results in loss of control. Mechanics cannot identify problem.

Abs brakes/locked up intermittently, resulting in extended stopping distance. In addition, steering malfunctioned, causing loss of control.

I have 5# of paper work on this one,had trouble with thie steering gear box at 1150 miles, had rocker and lifters done at 4407 miles, again at 6344 miles, brakes again at 15986 miles,24116 drive shaft out of balance, I'm still haveing trouble with the brakes some times it is like on brake and some times it's like they lock up the back wheels at the speed of 5mph on dry pavement or what ever surfes, or at the stop sign while holding the brake,you can here the abs. I have tryed dealing with bbb, and GMC put got no where, I wrote to the att gen's of both mn and TX, but got no where. I have all the paper work from day one, I"m paying over 40. 000. 00 for this.

22 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Back brakes are not functioning properly, causing the front brakes to wear out excessively. The front brakes have been replaced twice. Dealer has been notified.

23 Brake Electric Antilock problem

If vehicle is parked overnight in a rain storm the brakes do not respond in the morning, and vehicle will keep rolling when brake pedal is applied. Dealer has been contacted.

24 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Anti lock brakes lock up, causing loss of control.

25 Brake Electric Antilock problem

The abs does not function properly. Has been to dealer 15 times.
