1 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 11/30/2017

On cold morning starts, front brake pads will engage rotor, and release very slowly. Then on a turn, front pads will engage, lock for a short time, and then slowly release. Seems like engine has to warm up before brakes act normal. After cold morning startup, before moving vehicle, if brake pedal is pumped repeatedly for 30 seconds, brakes will try to act normal, when vehicle is moved. I am on my 2nd set of front pads and rotors. 1st set were severally worn. Tech said it looks like your calipers were sticking.

2 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/29/2017

Brake failure for the second time on the vehicle. Original brake lines were replaced 7 or 8 years ago due to failure at my own cost (rusted lines, leading them to fail as the brakes were applied), all lines were replace with gm replacement lines by a qualified technician. Original failure rendered the brakes 0% operational, gravity (uphill) was the only thing that stopped the vehicle. The most recent failure (on July 29, 2017) affected the brake line running to the front-right caliper, line failed where it crossed over the skid plate near the center-line of the vehicle up front by the lower radiator support. Line failed due to corrosion. Rear brakes appear to be working but are not sufficient to stop the vehicle in a safe manner. No accident occurred, line failed as approaching a light turning red while going uphill, rolled through the intersection prior to the light turning green for crossing traffic and was able to stop the vehicle as it drifted to a stop uphill. The quality of the gm brake lines are very suspect to say the least. The brake lines are dangerous and seem to be more susceptible to corrosion than any other brake line on any other vehicle I've ever owned, or any of my friends or family have ever owned. I can only imagine if the lines failed under different circumstances (while towing though mountains while going downhill for example, this would be a life-threatening situation). Please determine if these lines are faulty for the sake of others with these vehicles, and the sake of other motorists that could be impacted when the brakes on this larger vehicle fail. If they are found to be faulty owners should be notified that these brake lines are subpar, and that the manufacturer's replacement lines are also subpar.

3 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/08/2013

While traveling at approx. 20-25mph, pulling away from my home, a small animal ran across in front of me. I hit the brakes, hard, and after a momentary feeling of brake pressure, the pedal went straight to the floor with no brakes whatsoever. I backed up into my driveway, jacked up the truck and placed it on jack stands. The underside of the truck was wet and dripping brake fluid around the abs unit beneath the cab. My wife applied the brake while I examined the underside. An approx. 1/8in hole was found in the incredibly rusty and weak steel line running from the abs to the left front where it joins the rubber line to the l/f caliper. Further examination reveals all steel brake lines are incredibly rusty, structurally weak and in danger of failure. This could lead to a very serious, catastrophic crash with the potential of fatalities. Further, all of the steel parts of the fuel lines are also very, very rusty and weak and with the high internal pressures and highly flammable and explosive gasoline inside are another serious hazard. I am a licensed master auto/truck and motorcycle mechanic. In nearly 50 years of driving I have never seen a brake line failure from such massive rust on a vehicle with such low mileage. This vehicle has only 68,830 miles on it. It is unsafe to drive. Many, many other owners of similar GMC and Chevrolet trucks have reported similar brake line rust and failure. Repair/replacement cost estimates can be as high as $1200 to nearly $2000. Brake line failure can kill. If ever there was justification for a safety related recall, this is certainly it.

5 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 11/24/2012

I went to put it in dr and the brake pedal went to the floor the metal line blue . They had to replace the caliper too. It cost me $475. 89 to get it fix. Not happy. I had chevy with 200,000 miles on it and never replace any brake parts. 6 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 09/14/2012

I purchased my pickup new in Jan. 2007 and use it to tow an 8x16 trailer w/electric brakes for a part time business throughout the summer. The trailer weighs approx. 6000 lbs. Loaded and the truck is rated for 8,000 lbs. Approximate towing mileage is 3 to 4,000 miles per year. After towing the trailer 200 miles on sept. 14, 2012 my wife noticed several oil leaks on the asphalt nearby. I suspected something in the differential area and drove to the nearest GMC dealership several miles away. They diagnosed it as a rear brake line and ended up replacing 6' of it along with both rotors and calipers and a brake system flush for a total of $958. 76. I'm 66 yrs. Old and have never had a brake line go in any vehicle I've ever owned and I've lived in massachusetts all my life. My local mechanic just told me this week that the rest of the brake lines are badly coroded and should be replaced ASAP. This will add another $900 to the entire cost. There is no question in my mind that gm has allowed quality in workmanship on its brake lines to fall through the cracks. . . And at the public's expense.

7 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/14/2011

While slowing down at my neighborhood elementary school I applied the brakes at the stop sign. The brake pedal began to pulse. I drove around the block to my house. Upon investigation, a 12" section of the inside of my left rear brake rotor broke off. When the rotor continued to turn, the remaining section of the brake rotor caught the caliper piston and sheared it off. Luckily, I was only driving at 18 mph. If I had been on the highway driving 55-65 mph, the loss of braking would have been catastrophic. The piece that broke off was covered with rust on the inside - the side manufactured with cooling openings which are located between the inside and outside of the brake rotor.

8 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 01/30/2011

The original flexible brake hose on the front passenger side of my 2000 GMC sierra vehicle failed resulting in the loss of front brakes. It appears that the hose is too long and the hose rubbed on the rim. The delco replacement that I purchased has been totally redesigned. It is much shorter and the connection to the caliper has to be angled at a 45 degree angle, so that the will be no contact with the rim. After replacing the passenger side, I checked the driver's side hose and found the same problem. The hose shows rubbing is occurring. I will have to put a replacement hose on that side also.

9 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 12/11/2010

We own a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck with around 55k miles. Last Dec 2010 the brakes failed when applying pressure. We thought the problem was one of the rear calipers; however, upon further diagnosis, it was determined the brakes lines had rusted and subsequently burst/ruptured during a brake application. Fortunately, the vehicle was close to home when the brakes failed and we managed to get our truck home without incident. We left our truck parked over the winter to deal with the issue when the weather would be more cooperative for having our vehicle towed to a repair shop. I contacted gm early March 2011 regarding our problem and gm said a gm authorized dealer had to diagnosis the problem. We had our pickup towed to a local GMC dealer and the dealer?s service dept charged us $98 to inspect our vehicle. The dealer reported back to gm that the corrosion was caused by lack of maintenance. The dealers estimate was $4,657 to replace the brake lines and perform other maintenance work caused by the lines rupturing. If the "ebcm for the anti-lock brakes did not have to be replaced, then the dealer?s estimated repair bill was reduced to $3,316. I informed gm that I've owned 10 or so vehicles in my lifetime and never had any brake lines corrode/rupture during a brake application nor did I have to have preventative maintenance performed on the brake lines to prevent them from corroding. Other owners of gm pickups/suvs have also filed complaints on NHTSA?s website for this same brake line failure problem due to corrosion. A preliminary evaluation was opened by NHTSA to determine the frequency, scope and safety consequences of the alleged defect in gm pickups/suvs manufactured during 1999 to 2003. The investigation number is "pe 10-010" dated 30 March 2010. The subject is "brake line failure due to corrosion". This investigation was opened March 2010 and I cannot locate any updates on the NHTSA website. Updated 05/19/11.

10 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 09/03/2010

3rd time brakes/rotors have been replaced. This time I found I needed to replace the front calipers also. I have a detailed vehicle repair history from the day it was first purchased. The brakelines are in bad shape. While bleeding the brakes after installation, I had one of the lines rupture from corrosion. Upon inspection of all brakelines, I find it necessary to replace all brakelines for the safety of myself and my family and the other motorists on the road.

11 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

Moments after leaving the driveway at our home, approaching an intersection at about 25 mph, I applied the brakes on my 2002 GMC sierra, and the pedal went to the floor. I couldn't stop the vehicle before going through the intersection. Fortunately no other vehicles were in the intersection and no accident occurred. After returning the vehicle to the driveway I discovered brake fluid under the truck bed and dripping from the frame. I could not see the source of the leak as it was well hidden either in or above the truck frame. I had the vehicle brought by flat bed truck to a local auto repair garage. The mechanics found the brake lines to be heavily rusted and one had rusted through and failed, causing the earlier brake failure. Because the brake line rusting was so heavy, all the brake lines were replaced. Also,, the two front brake calipers were replaced because of heavy rust. The rusted brake lines are available. The consequences of this was a repair bill of $1149. 78, and having my truck in the shop for several days. Luckily, nobody was hurt. If this had occurred later in the day in the same location it may not have turned out the same. This is the third major brake repair done on this truck. I am the original owner. I have had to have the brake pads and rotors replaced twice. Both times I was told the rotors were so badly rusted they needed to be replaced. During the first six years of owning the vehicle it was kept in a garage. It has always been well taken care of. With this repair, I have spent over $3000. To keep brakes functioning on this truck.

12 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/11/2010

Brake line failure on my 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 1/2 ton 4wd pickup. Brake line failed because of rust. My truck has only 47000 miles on it and well cared for. When it happened I was turning into a parking lot and the brake pedal went to the floor almost hit street sign. I had to get the truck towed. The garage had to replace all brake lines, front hoses and calipers because of rust. The total bill came to $1030 including the tow. The garage told me they have to replace these brake line on these early 2000s gm truck all the time. There has to be a recall on these truck because you have no warning when this happens. Very scary when it does.

13 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/09/2010

2008 GMC Sierra 1500 sle has had to have front rotors and pads replaced at 20,000 miles. Replaced rotors and pads with aftermarket parts. At 30,000 miles pads and rotors are worn down to metal again. Dealership stated that calipers are working but rear brakes need to be replaced also. I have always had brake issues since the day I bought the truck brand new with brakes overheating.

14 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 02/05/2010

09/2009 began to hear front brakes intermittently squeaking when I applied brakes. 10/2009 - took vehicle to midas for inspection. Technician discovered both front and rear brakes were worn down needed to be replaced, truck had approximately 19,000 miles paid for both front and rear brakes to be replaced. 2/2010 went to local mountains (big bear) for the day with my family. While coming down the mountain I noticed my brake pedal starting to get soft. Pulled over onto a turn our point and noticed my front drivers side wheel was smoking. Please my hands close to the wheel and felt heat coming from the brakes, did the same on the passengers side with the same results. Waited 30-40 minutes for them to cool down. Tested braking in the turn our and proceeded home. 2/2010 (the next day) took truck back to midas (with approximately 24,000 miles) for them to inspect. The technician noticed the disk were blue and recommend they be replaced. He also showed me the rubber boots that were melted on the drivers side due to the extreme heat that was generated. I requested that midas change the brakes (which they did) and purchased new rotors as the technician had advised and they also exchanged the brake fluid. I had planned on taking the truck to the dealer to have the drivers side caliper replaced. 2/2010 (the following weekend) I took the vehicle to foothill ranch Chevrolet and explained the events leading up to my visit. I explained to the service advisor that the drivers side caliper boots were burnt and I wanted them replaced. He noticed my concerns and took my vehicle. 2/2010 (the following Wednesday) received call truck was ready and picked up and that my caliper had not been replaced as it was found to be in acceptable working order even with burnt boots. 3/2010 called 800-222-1020 (gm customer line) incident # 71-814348680 to lodge a complaint and ask for my drivers side caliper to be replaced.

15 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 10/21/2009

2004 GMC 1500 4x4 85,000 mi. , brakes feel soft and have excessive travel during emergency stopping or when towing. Have replaced front pads with more aggressive pads and no help, have tried bleeding several times to no avail. Personally think the problem lies in the lines from the master cyl. To abs box as these are flex style lines not hard lines, I have been in the automotive repair business for 40 years and have not had a problem such as this that I could not locate a problem, all components appear to be working properly, booster, master cyl, abs controller, and calipers. I personally know of several other vehicles from these years with the same problems and gm has not fixed the problems.

16 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

2003 GMC Sierra 1500 pu truck - corroded and failing hydraulic brake lines. This truck was purchased new by me in October 2003, and now has only 23,700 miles on it. A line near the fuel tank, which feeds the rear wheel calipers, rusted through in January 2009. Other lines in numerous locations also show signs of corrosion which will lead to future failures. Mechanics in this area tell me this is very common, even on some newer GMC (and similar Chevrolet) vehicles. Some of these mechanics replace the faulty lines with tubing which is more corrosion-resistant than provided by the manufacturer. A couple of weeks ago, one of the rear, rear wheel emergency brake cables on this vehicle also failed due to corrosion, and the other one showed signs of the same failure impending. Both were replaced. A serious, fundamental and compound hazard exists under this scenario. The manufacturer should be required to recall thee vehicles and replace all critical brake components subject to corrosive failures with corrosion-proof (or at least highly corrosion-resistant) parts.

17 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 03/26/2008

2000 GMC 1500 sierra 47,357 miles had a recall about a year ago. They cleaned and etched front brake lines at the calipers. Today towing a trailer with a car in the I-95 corridor between d. C. And baltimore I had to attempt a quick stop for slow traffic when suddenly I lost all breaking pressure and fortunately ended at the inner grass space barely saving a horrible crush with several cars lined in front of me. My front reservoir was very low, underneath the car at the driver's door level all 4 break lines were badly swollen and corroded, one at least was obviously dripping, and even the frame was corroded and metal chunks were easily knocked. Other sections look very rusty worse than a 65 Ford galaxie am restoring . And this at almost 48,000 miles .
