There is play in the rear axles that emit a clunking noise when I am slowly backing over a grade with the steering wheels turned. I demonstrated play in the rear axles to the GMC factory rep and he said the axle play is within tolerances. My contention is that the noise is not normal and that the grooves in the differential end or the axles that accept the horseshoe shaped keeper clips are machined incorrectly and putting excessive stress on the clips. Eventually the clips will fail resulting in the wheel coming off. I further argue that if the axle play is indeed within tolerances then the tolerances are wrong. I tried to make the incorrect tolerance argument to the factory rep by making an analogy to the corvair and he missed my point. The rear suspension on the corvair was also within tolerances and many people died.
On February 15, 2012 at approximately 11:00am, driving down a two lane paved highway, the cross pin in the rear differential gear housing failed and parts of it fell into the gears causing the rear tires to lock up and the vehicle to skid out of control into the oncoming traffic lane. Luckily, oncoming traffic was able to stop in time avoiding an accident. This was verified by american collision in rutland, vt as the cause of the failure.

When I first drove my new truck I noticed a subtle knocking noise coming from the rear when driving slowly over a bump. The dealer’s mechanic agreed there was something wrong and called gm tech assistance (71-910-553230) and found the rear axle had too much play. The grove on the axle that retains the c retaining clip was machined too close to the end of the shaft. They replaced the axle. Only a person with mechanical experience could have detected the subtle noise. Had it gone undetected eventually the c clip would likely fail and the axle and wheel would have slid out of the differential housing. I doubt this machining fault on the axle is unique to my truck.
The contact owns a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving at an unknown speed with the heat activated, the contact smelled something burning coming from the blower motor. Sometimes, after the vehicle was driven, he would smell fuel. When making a left or right turn, one of the rear tires slides and the other one keeps spinning. The contact believes that the failure was caused by the rear differential or the abs. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by a dealer or mechanic at this time. The failure mileage was 205.

2004 GMC sierra sle w/trailer towing package, 2-wheel drive. 2nd owner. Never used to tow whatsoever. Extremely well cared for. 59,665 miles. Started making "roaring" noise from read end. Called gm to ascertain if help for problem available. They told me to take it to lawrence-hall, abilene, texas for evaluation. Lawrence hall says bearing in differential has failed. Gm refuses to help in any way whatsoever with the repair, and even says that I am liable for the cost of the evaluation, even though they are the ones who told me to take it there, and even though they never said that they would not pay for it. When they told me to take it there, they implied that they would pay for the evaluation. I contend that at 59,000 that bearing should never have failed; that millions of vehicles go 2, 3 and 4 times that distance and never have that problem, and that had this locked up, it could have caused death and injury to driver, passenger and others. Also contend that gm should have told me that if they declined to pay for the repair, that I would be liable for the diagnostic charge. When I dropped the vehicle off, the service manager told me 3 times that "the courtesy vehicle is out there waiting for you," implying for me to hurry up and get out there, but then, as I was on my way out the door, brought me a clipboard and told me to fill in my contact info "so we can get a hold of you. " I handed it back to him, and he said I needed to sign it to give them permission to work on it. Because he had been rushing me, I signed it and walked out. Now it appears that they think that since I signed that form that I acknowledge to them that I am liable for the cost of the repair.

The 2002 was in need of front hubs since they were not replaced when they should have been at the time the front differential was rebuilt. This caused the truck to have excessive front wheel friction, and compromised the braking characteristics of the truck. It was difficult to drive, especially in snow, and the front wheel friction would vary based on changes in speed, road contour, temperature, steering input, throttle input, and brake input. While braking the truck would often pitch severely to one side or the other, the abs would activate on dry pavement. On one occasion the abs activated when my foot was off the brake. The truck would also sway from side to side at highway speed as the friction varied from side to side. When the truck was returned to me once from culligan GMC, the power steering effort had increased greatly. The characteristics of the rear locking differential had been changed. The truck was back to the dealer, david Cadillac, many times for the same concern with the front differential. On one occasion the truck was returned to me gushing gear lube from the front axle, on another it was returned to me with the front differential empty. I was charged for a 4 wheel alignment when only 2 wheels can be aligned on this truck. The wrong oil filter was installed, the truck was driven abusively by a dealer employee (it was run beyond mechanical limits while cold as I stood in the parking lot), and when I called the service adviser after the truck had been in his shop for over a week without my hearing what it's status was, the service person screamed at me on the phone "when it is finished I will call you!!!", and he slammed the phone down.
