38 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

I was driving to dallas with my family on sat. Oct 20, 2007 in my 2004 GMC Yukon (49600 miles). While merging onto into traffic, I noticed that my speedometer was showing I was speeding in excess of 90 mph, but in fact, I was barely keeping up with the flow of traffic. I pulled off the free way and came to a dead stop at a gas station, and the speedometer needle reflected at 30 mph at a dead stop. I turned the key on and off several times, and each time the speedometer needle dropped by 5 to 10 mph, eventually resetting to 0. I continued on to my destination, again, the speedometer began acting the same way increasing and decreasing in jerky movement, but never completely going to zero. I never reset the speedometer again to zero, and now the speedometer shows 120 mph at a dead stop. There is no way to tell how fast I am actually traveling in the vehicle. I have read many, many complaints stating problems exactly like, or similar to mine regarding the speedometers on similar year/model gm trucks. There should be a recall on the speedometer gauges used in gm's late model trucks.

39 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2007

No incident resulting in crashes or injuries. However, failure to information cluster including the speedometer has failed to provide vital information in order to operate the vehicle safely.

40 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2007

Speedometer on my 2004 GMC Yukon became very erratic, displaying speeds that were obviously way too slow than what the vehicle was actually traveling. Very dangerous situation as I cannot tell how fast the vehicle is going. Gm should conduct a recall as this is a safety hazard.

41 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2007

On the date listed below, my speedometer began to register incorrect speeds. It then became stuck on 70 mph when my vehicle was stopped. It has not stopped working all the way and is stuck at 140mph. While at my local dealership getting my oil changed, I asked an attendant if he was getting many speedometer repairs for my make/model. He stated that he has replaced many and that the problem is a faulty "step motor"?? I asked the service manager if there were any recalls and he stated "he was not familiar with any problems. " he stated he would fix my speedometer for approximately $400. The service tech stated the motor costs $10. I have read a few threads on the topic and there seems to be a serious problem, and not the proper response from the maker. Basically a defective part and a car company making lots of money to repair it. Vehicle I own is a 2004 Yukon denali.

42 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2007

I started having problems with the speedometer becoming erratic on my 2004 GMC Yukon xl about 2 weeks ago. Nothing seems to fix it and it is really a safety issue. As a member of the us military and a firefighter I feel I put my life on the line enough. I have found several web-sites with literally thousands of people with the same problems on many different gm vehicles (mostly trucks and SUV's). This should be a recalled item before someone gets hurt and sues gm or is that what it takes for a billion dollar company to get the point. I had this part quoted to me at $480 and don't feel it is my responsibility to pay for defective parts considering all these other peoples problems. Updated 10/10/07.

43 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2007

While driving home the speedometer stopped reading any speed. It slowly drifted down to 0 mph. While driving I accelerated thinking that I was loosing speed only to finally realize that the speedometer was malfunctioning. The car has 70,000 miles on the odometer which I am assuming is accurate. This is a very dangerous item to have fail. This could easily caused an accident when approaching a curve the driver would think that the car is traveling slower than it actual. Makes an ominous clicking noise. This am on the way to work appeared to be functioning normally!!! very strange and definitely not "professional grade".

44 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2007

The speedometer on my 2004 Yukon xl has failed. Sometimes the dial stays at 0mph no matter my speed, sometimes it reads 120mph no matter the speed, and sometimes it reads 20mph above and below the actual speed limit. Gm has identified is as a problem but has not agreed to cover all 2004 models for this repair. This be should be identified for a system wide recall and gm should be required to pay to rectify this safety issue.

45 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2007

2004 Yukon denali speedometer malfunctioned causing wrong speed readings.

46 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2007

After driving at highway speeds for more than one-half of an hour, the speedometer starts to read slower than I am driving and sometimes goes to zero, while I am obviously traveling at 60 to 70 mph. If I get off the freeway or slow to a stop, it usually reads correctly for a while, then goes back to reading slowly again. This has been happening more and more frequently. This is a safety hazard, as well as my not knowing the true speed of my vehicle, I could get a speeding ticket. I have not repaired this yet as it is a gm problem and they should repair it.

47 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2007

I own a 2004 GMC Yukon. The speedometer wored s eratically. It either did not registrar the correct speed or did not work at all. At times, appeared to registrar the correct vehicle speed. In any case it has created an unsafe condition because of not knowing for certain whether or not the speed vehiclewas traveling was correct.

Speedometer sticks at various readings while driving. This was first noticed about 4 months ago.

50 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2007

Speedometer of 2004 Yukon slowed while driving ,causing me to speed up to maintain constant cruising speed. After a while I realized I was increasing velocity while the speedometer registered a decrease in velocity. The problem changed to result in a speedometer registering over 120 mph constantly even when stopped. Research shows widespread problems throughout GMC line of vehicles with speedometers. *a.

51 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2007

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Yukon. Approximately six months ago, the fuel gauge began to display inaccurate fuel readings. Beginning in November of 2007, the speedometer began malfunctioning and remains at 120 mph, even when the vehicle is not on. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer on four separate occasions for the steering wheel to be greased because it makes a popping noise every six months. The vehicle has not been taken to the dealer concerning the fuel gauge or the speedometer at this time. There is an extended warranty on the fuel gauge and speedometer, which has been extended to 70,000 miles. The VIN, engine size, and purchase date were unknown. The current mileage was 123,000 and failure mileage was 118,000.

52 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2007

Purchased car may 24, 2007 with 68004 miles. On may 25th speedometer started sticking and then stopped working altogether. Then working sporadically. Was clocking 0mph on highway when estimated speed probably 60mph. Have not done anything to repair yet. Seems like a defect as per hundreds and hundreds of complaints on line.

53 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2007

Speedometer in 2004 GMC Yukon was erratic at first intermittently, and was now permanently way off the mark. Personnel correspondence with two dealer service writers confirmed that this was common in at least 2003 and 2004 Yukon's. Non warranty cluster replacement at $400. 00 was fix. Ed. Gm should issue factory recall.

54 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2007

Speedometer is reading incorrectly on 2004 GMC Yukon. It reads 60 mph when stopped and over 120 mph at approx 60 mph. My online research has uncovered thousands of these failures and several possible class action lawsuits are in the beginning process. GMC, to date, has issued no recall - the consumer should not be financially responsible for this safety issue - within warranty period or not - what do we do next?.

55 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2007

Speedometer started reading 120 mph sitting still right after car was out of warranty I am not alone with this problem there are tens of thousands just like mine with no gm recall this item needs to be recalled it is dangerous driving with no accurate speedometer.

56 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2007

Like many other complaints on this and other web sights speedometer and tachometer do not read correctly. Last Friday,I drove from wichita, kansas to wichita falls, texas at 100 mph and 6000 rpms according to the instruments. Luckily I have a global positioning system that also gives mph and I was able to control the speed with it. I also had zero oil pressure at various times according to the gauge. This seems to be a much too common problem with GMC and other gm products of this year. I feel gm should have to pay for the repairs and not the public that has spent good money to buy these vehicles.

57 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2007

Speedometer on 2004 GMC Yukon xl froze at 60 mph. At next use speeds registered up to 120 mph. Currently still stuck at 60 mph when parked with engine off.

58 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2007

The speedometer would all of the sudden just go down to zero. Once you would stop car, turn off and then back on, it would reset. It did this a half a dozen times, until this past weekend, while driving, it said I was going 70, but I seemed to be passing everyone. I slowed down, and noticed that the speedometer was stuck at 70. I stopped, turned off the car and nothing happened. I had to continue my trip by pacing myself with other cars. Yesterday, it said I was pegged out going over 120. It would never go below 70. I took to dealer and they had to send cluster to be repaired. This is a very dangerous situation and sounds like a recurring problem that needs to be addressed by gm. I don't think the consumer should be stuck paying for a safety issue that gm needs to replace.

Failure Date: 01/28/2007

64 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2007

Stepped on gas in my 2004 GMC Yukon and the speedometer needle soared way past the actual speed. When I stopped the car, the needle rested at 120 mph. After a day it reset itself and then did it again. I went to the dealer to get it corrected and they advised that they've been receiving issues with the instrument panel clusters. My extended warranty didn't cover the issue because it wasn't considered a covered part. . . But it is a safety hazard!.
