2 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 06/15/2013

2002 GMC Yukon suffered multiple brakeline failures due to corrosion. Rear brake lines running along the axle were originally replaced upon visual inspection. The rear main line from the abs modulator failed shortly after from a corrosion induced leak where the line passes over the fuel tank. The front lines were scheduled for replacement as a precaution but failed prior to repair where the line passes over the radiator brace. All brake lines and fuel lines show significant corrosion damage.

5 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

When attempting to brake to a normal stop at an intersection after exiting I-10 east at pascagoula, ms, the brake pedal went almost to the floor, the brake failure and abs brake failure alarms came on both audibly and visually. Upon releasing and reapplying the brakes, I found I had sufficient brake function to stop from the relatively low speed in a longer than normal but reasonable distance. I then pulled into the nearest parking lot and started searching the yellow pages for the nearest GMC or Chevrolet dealer as I was 160 mi from home and needed immediate repair. The dealership found that the brake lines were all severely corroded and that one or both of the lines going to the master cylinder had started leaking. They replaced the lines and attempted to bleed the brakes but they were not totally successful due to a combination of the sophistocation of the abs system and the inexperience of the mechanic on duty at the time. After I returned home, I was able to find a more competent repair facility at 47,780 miles. They confirmed the severe corrosion of the entire brake line system, including the brake hoses and calipers. They replaced an additional left front brake hose and properly bled the brakes to restore total function. This held until a couple of months ago when I noticed fluid loss from the brake reservoir starting to accelerate. It took two months to find a shop that would do the work, but I now have an appointment this week to have an independent shop in baton rouge to replace all brake lines, hoses, etc as needed. When I had searched the web for recalls, etc, I noticed that the NHTSA was studying this same issue, so that is why I'm filing this claim. This vehicle was sold and operated in new jersey for 36,000 miles until April 08 and has been in louisiana since then with approximately 85000 total miles. Let me know if you need any further information.

7 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 12/03/2006

Was driving truck and noticed loud motor noise in addition to engine running. Turned truck off in garage and a motor noise was still running with engine turned off. Abs light on dash illuminated. Unloaded child, self and groceries from truck. 30 minutes later, (trying to figure out next step to correct problem since it was a Sunday), motor noise is still running and engine is off. Drove truck to firestone garage. Turned engine off, motor noise still running. Garage hooked truck up to diagnostic system and said that there was a failure in abs system. They disconnected abs system and motor noise stopped. Said that the part was dangerously hot and that this could have been very bad because the abs system sits right under/over the gas tank. Can you imagine what could have happened to my family and house if it caused a fire in my garage? what if I couldn't have found a garage that was open on Sunday afternoon? there aren't many, believe me. I have received a quote to have part replaced, but have not fixed yet. It is very inconvenient for me to leave my truck at a dealership for the length of time this is going to take to be diagnosed again (and of course the dealer wants me to pay the $99 diagnostic fee again after I have already paid this once to firestone). I do not feel that the abs system should fail on a truck that is only 5 years old.

8 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 11/01/2006

Abs failure at low speed.

9 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/01/2006

The contact owns a 2002 GMC Yukon xl. The contact stated that the abs was failing and the antilock braking pump continuously runs. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they informed him that the pad-circuit board was failing and caused the pump to run at high speeds. This could lead to overheat and a possible fire. The failure occurs after driving the vehicle at any speed. When the engine was shut off, it made a high pitched motor noise. He searched and discovered NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The recall only applies to certain states and his VIN was not included. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 79,000 and current mileage was 93,000. Updated 11/06/07.

10 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

Abs module failure the abs module in my 2001 Yukon xl has failed. It will cost me $1200 to replace it. What happens is that the module fails, and the abs motor starts running continually. This is a prevalent problem with gm vehicles from what I have read on the internet, and what I have heard second hand from a service manager at a gm dealership. I noticed today that you are investigating fires resulting from abs modules, and wanted you to know that this is a known problem for gm. I sent gm an email about this, but since I hadn't taken my vehicle to a gm dealer for repair, rather I took it to a local auto repair shop, they were unwilling to do anything about it. When I ultimately took it in, they said it would cost $1200 to fix.

11 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2000 GMC Yukon

: the contact stated the abs system failed to stop the vehicle. While approaching a stop driving 5 mph the brakes failed and rear ended another vehicle. Seat belts were in use by all 3 occupants in the vehicle. However injuries were sustained to the driver. The air bags did not deploy. The police were on scene and a report was filed. Prior to the accident the abs light on the instrument panel was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however the dealer was unable to make repairs. There is a NHTSA recall, # 05v37900, regarding the service brakes, antilock. The VIN was not included in the recall.

12 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 08/19/2005

In Aug 2005, the abs light on our 2001 GMC Yukon with 51k miles came on and there was a grinding noise (the pump) underneath the driver's side which remains on when the vehicle is turned off. The abs fuse must be removed to shut off the pump. Our local GMC dealership repaired it for $1100 ($870 for the abs module). In Sep 2009, the abs failed again at 91k miles. Our GMC dealership helped cover the cost of repair by covering the cost of the module. We had to wait 2 months (Nov 2009) before the vehicle could be repaired because we were told that the module was being redesigned to fix these problems. In oct 2014, the abs failed again at 138k miles. Our GMC dealership put us in contact with GMC customer service with the hope that GMC could assist in covering the cost of repair. After several frustrating phone calls with supervisors, we were told that the vehicle was too old and therefore GMC would not assist. During these phone calls GMC stated that there was a recall for the vehicle in "salt-belt" states but not California. Obviously the abs module is defective as a relative with a similar vehicle (chevy tahoe) had the same issue with the abs module. In searching the internet, we found a company that states that they can repair the module for under $100 and guarantees the repair for life. If they can do this, why can't gm make the necessary changes to the abs module and give customers the peace of mind that the vehicle will be safe. Hopefully the NHTSA will use this and similar complaints and force gm to issue a recall on the abs module.

13 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 01/11/2005

Abs and rear brake failure.

14 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 01/05/2005

The contact complained about a fuel system problem. When putting gas in the vehicle and filling it up the gas spilled out underneath the gas tank. The contact has taken the vehicle to an independent party for service. The contact did not know exactly what the cause of the problem was at this point. Also, abs system failed. When slowing down or going to stop the abs is engaged at any speed. The contact called gm, and they said they knew about the problems. The contact took vehicle to the dealer, and had the wheel sensor replaced. That has fixed the problem with the brakes. General motors was contacted over the problems, they said that vehicle was not included at this time. Gm did told the contact that they would give him a coupon for a new 2006 vehicle.

15 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 08/10/2004

Abs module failure at around 39,000 miles. Removed abs fuse to get motor to stop running continuously, as it was extremely hot. Called dealership about repairing the motor, but they do not repair the modules, only replace entire module for $1000 (with the exact same module). Sent module to a company that replaced the faulty parts for $100, with parts that well exceed shoddy oem standards, with a lifetime warranty on the parts as well.
