Driving approx. 62 mph on a highway, went to slow down and unable to brake, upon pushing down on the break there was resistance, after pumping the breaks multiple times I was eventually able to slow down with a lot of force. Messages on dashboard read "brake system failure" "62 max speed esc, service esc, service trailer break system, and forward collision system unavailable. " abs, esc and check engine light all illuminated on dash screen.

First note that our recall for increased pedal effort was done on our 2015 GMC Yukon 2 months before this incident. Our vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed coming home from mammoth on the 15 freeway. We heard what we describe as a buzzing noise but we couldn't tell if it was our car or another on the freeway it almost sounded like tire tread before you have a blow out. We slowed down a bit (65-70mph) to check our surroundings. A few minutes later we started to lose control of our Yukon. I started to unbuckle and climb to my husbands drivers seat because he wasn't responding to our screams and he looked ill. As I was screaming his name he finally says into my ear we have to crash! I panicked and screamed what is happening. He replies we have no brakes! the pedal was as hard as a rock like a brick was underneath it and our car was serving back and forth. As traffic slowed and we prepared to crash into the car in front the center divider opened up and we were able to cruise down it until we slammed e brake on. These models should not be on the road and we could have very easily died or killed another family in the process! absolutely unacceptable on gms part! terrifying! there has been no vacuum pump recall placed on our Yukon and it was the vacuum pump that failed which made the brakes fail there was no back up zero brakes with a family of 5 in the car on the freeway! every owner who owns a 2015/2016 should be aware that this can happen to them. It's not just at slow speed. We haven't stepped foot in our car since our kids are scared to death to ride in any car that looks like it.

The brakes failed in my car causing a rear collision with an object in my driveway. After inspection from a certified GMC dealership, the brake failure was not caused by service neglect or age of brakes, it was due to the vaccum pump failure to provide pressure. This is the second time in two years this part has caused my brakes to fail. The dealership replaced the part at no cost though there is not formal recall on this part. Both times this part failed the car was in motion. The first time it was towed out of a city to be repaired as it was dangersous to drive and the second time the failure caused the vehicle to collide with a large dumpster in my driveway causing extensive damage to the rear passenger side of the car. Thankfully there was not physical damage to any persons in either of these two incidents which both were no fault of the driver or owner of the car.
After sending my SUV for the brake recall(the brakes actually failed while I was driving) last month, my brakes failed again while driving out of my driveway, on Wednesday 8/19 -on my way to work. . I drove straight to the dealership. Basically having to hard push the brakes on city streets stop lights etc. Scary. Yesterday, 8/20 they told me the car was fixed. On my way to the dealership 30 min away, they tell me after driving the vehicle, that brake indication came on the screen and they will need to keep it for my safety. As of now no word on it being corrected, and quite honestly not feeling safe about diving the car.
Full brake failure in 7/19 and again in 10/19. We were able to avoid hitting other vehicle as little traffic. Had them completely repaired both times. 1/20 brakes failed again causing us to avoid hitting other vehicles by jumping a curb and hitting a mile marker sign a parkway. That is 3 brakes failures in 7 months. Vehicle is now totaled. This seems to be a huge issue! no injuries, thank god!.

Brake failure after recall was done brakes still fail was driving and was braking the pedal went in all the way and the Yukon xl denali did not stop also have bad fuel injectors took it to the dealership and they dont know what fuel injectors go on the SUV also gm doesnt know they have to take apart the engine to find out what fuel injectors they put on the engine they wont give me a car rental and does not all the fuel injectors are on back order there is 3. Types high pressure low pressure and they dont know the fuel injector that was used I paid over 90,000 with taxes and interest on this 2017 Yukon xl denali and they have replaced 3 shocks, brake vacuum pump, brake and rotors they had to repaint the feont bumper rear bumper hood and back door and now the fuel injectors with only 37,500 miles this SUV is a junk and now I believe all gm cars are now junk.
Vehicle was under recall and service was completed at gm dealer mid October. Following recall for brake vacum pump and new computer program, I lost my brakes on several occasions at slow speeds in reverse and forward. Vehicle was returned to dealer and after two days of testing vehicle would not duplicate issue or provide a code. Dealer returned vehicle. That day 11/05/2019 brake failure occured on two seperate occasions backing out of driveway on grade. Upon contact with dealer advised they would not do anything further until a code was provided. If I wished to replace the ebc vacum pump it would be out of pocket. Vehicle has been driven daily until another appointment can be made. On 11/13/2019 brake failure occured again on two occasions. When failure occurs pedal goes to the floor and what sounds like abs noise is active with a pulsation in the pedal. Vehicle will not stop and have to use e-brake to come to a complete stop as braking distance is dramaticly reduced. A follow-up appoint will be made with gm dealer again.
Low speeds the brakes fail , when pressing on brakes you get a hard brake pedal with no brakes .
Brakes fail at low speeds and when reversing slowly. Can replicate problem. Searched internet and this appears to be a widespread problem. Service bulletins have even been written. Why no recall for a widespread issue that could have catastrophic consequences. . Vehicle has less than 50000 miles.
On two separate occasions when parking, and driving at a high rate of soeedv( 60 mph)on interstate in sudden stop and go traffic brakes failed to engage after working properly before and again after with more than a month between incidents . The second incident occurred on 12/31/18 after the vehicle had been in for routine oil change and service that included a multi point inspection at the GMC dealership where it was purchased brand new. The vehicle is frequently serviced as required and has tires with good tread . The failure is alarming as it often comes when trying to make a necessary stop and the failure comes out of the blue then returns to normal. This occurrence should be addressed by the manufacturer and should be taken very seriously since the matter is literally a matter of life and death. I will be making an appointment for my vehicle to be checked out and will update the dealership findings .
Power brakes failing at low speeds-in freeway traffic-pulling into driveway requires strong pressing on brake pedal as if the brakes are intermittently loosing power assist.
Low speed brake failure: at low speeds the brake pedal became firm and the vehicle did not stop in an appropriate time. This led to two near accidents. Both times the vehicle was in a line of cars that was stop and go picking up children at after school. Serious concern that the vehicle will not stop and injure children trying to load or unload. The problem appears to occur only at low speeds only.
On multiple occasions specifically while traveling at low speed rate such as slow moving traffic or pulling in or backing out of parking space. The brakes become hard to push and the brakes do not engage. You must push the brakes very hard to stop. We took to the gm service at our dealership and a brake vacuum pump was replaced. The next day we were driving the vehicle and the brakes failed to stop. Thankfully we were in a parking lot and were able to stop against bumper stop. We called the gm service dealership and they arranged for a tow. This is extremely dangerous situation.
My husband and I were driving on the highway at 70 mph when he needed to slow down and noticed the brakes on the Yukon were not functioning properly. More specifically, the brakes would not function the first 3-4 times when they were applied or tapped, but thereafter the brakes would become hard and he had to depress the brake pedal as hard as he could but with little to no stopping ability. The brake assist light came on. Had we been in any traffic or on a shorter road, we would have surely crashed into someone and it could have been catastrophic considering we live in dallas where there is a lot of traffic. This day we were very lucky! gm had issued a service bulletin #pit5361b which affected multiple years and classes of vehicles to include the 2015 Yukon. Gm acknowledged that a customer may comment on a hard brake pedal or that increased effort is needed to depress the brake pedal. as evidence of the defect, gm notified its dealers, while performing normal diagnostics, fluid may be found in the brake booster and/or the booster vacuum line. however, we called multiple dealerships within the dfw area and they all denied knowing any issue with gm brakes failing or the vacuum pump. Interestingly, there is a class action lawsuit on this very issue and gm also issued a series of service bulletins to its dealers regarding the brake defect, with the latest bulletin dated March 15, 2017, to include the 2015-2016 Yukon. Ours is just a 2017, 1 year outside of that. Who is to say this year isn't affected considering past history of the bulletins. It was thanksgiving holiday and no dealership could even get to it besides not knowing of any issue, even though it's all over the internet.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 GMC Yukon. While driving at low speeds, the brakes failed to engage. The brake pedal became extremely stiff and the emergency brake had to be applied to stop the vehicle. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 47,200.
Driving at low speeds (5 mph or below) the brakes failed to engage. The brake pedal was stiff and offered little press. Pressing the pedal extremely hard brought the vehicle to a stop. This happened multiple times in a single day, almost causing an accident in traffic and did cause me to bump into our garage wall. When a I took the vehicle in to be serviced, the vacuum pump had to be replaced. Our vehicle as 39,800 miles. . Read more...
Driving at a low speed through a drive through and my brakes failed when I tried to stop before pulling out onto a cross street. Pedal locked, and vehicle continued to roll. After stepping on the brakes a few times they engaged again. Same problem happened again when I was leaving a parking lot, only this time the brakes would not engage after several attempts. I coasted into a potted decorative tree that stopped me, shifted into neutral and back into drive and they began working again. No warning signals appeared on dash, and brakes and brake fluid have been checked and all are satisfactory.
Brake vacuum pump failed. While towing a boat and backing up my brake pedal went hard when I pushed down and my vehicle would not stop. I was able to steer out of danger and eventually come to a stop.
Braking becomes "hard" after braking while moving (e. G. In rush hour traffic or slowly going down a hill). This started while going downhill in an animal reserve. I was inching forward to get better views of the animals. Halfway down the hill the brakes completely failed. I had to literally stand up on the brake, and it still wouldn't stop the car. After taking my foot off the brake for a bit, the problem fixed itself. When I took it to the dealer, they said it was a faulty vacuum pump ($500 repair), but online research says replacing the vacuum pump doesn't solve the problem. Note, this problem continues to persist.
The contact owns a 2015 GMC Yukon. While at a drive thru with the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard, the brakes failed. The contact had to apply excessive force in order for the vehicle to stop. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to starling Chevrolet Buick GMC (1001 e irlo bronson memorial hwy, st cloud, FL 34769, phone: (407) 892-5144), but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the failure had to be duplicated. The approximate failure mileage was 42,000. The VIN was not available.
While driving at slow speed in school parking lot brake pedal failed to stop vehicle when using normal brake pressure. Pedestrian in front of vehicle jumped out of the way to avoid being struck.
Brakes don't work well when traveling at low rates of speed. Stopping requires brakes to be pressed to the ground and still may not stop. I have almost had several accidents even after having the issue repaired last year. I've had the problem assessed at 3 different mechanics. I have had to throw my car into park to avoid hitting cars in front of me. Brakes fail while driving in places such as traffic jams, drive thru, school pick up, etc. This is a huge safety hazard and fear that my children may be hurt if this issue is not corrected by the manufacturer. Steering becomes nearly impossible when the brake issues occur. This is an ongoing problem for the last 1. 5- 2 years. Also, the tail lights continue to go out even after paying hundreds of dollars for replacements.
The contact owns a 2003 GMC Yukon. While driving approximately 40 mph, the brakes failed to work. While attempting to slow down, the brake pedal went to the floor when it was depressed, but failed to stop the vehicle. The abs indicator illuminated. The contact slowly drove the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the hydraulic unit needed to be replaced. The technician referred the contact to a local dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was not provided. The failure mileage was 142,000.

While driving down road at approximately 45 mph, hit the brakes when a couple of deer jumped onto road and the pedal went to floor with no braking action at all. Had enough time to realize what had happened and hit the parking brake in time before reaching intersection to busy highway. Inspection afterward showed brake fluid on the frame near the driver side door where the proportioning valve is located. There was no warning of the failure and had been driving the vehicle around town most of the day. Have experienced brake failures on vehicles before and always had half the system remain operational enough to stop without problem. This appears to have been a single failure mode that caused the loss of braking or a simultaneous failure of multiple systems which should be unlikely but seems to happen with improbable regularity based on complaints posted.

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Yukon. While driving various speeds, the brake pedal was applied and the vehicle failed to stop. The brake pedal had to be pumped several times to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer were it was diagnosed that the brake booster needed to be adjusted. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the brake failure was duplicated and diagnosed that the brake boosters needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 35,000.
The brakes on my07 Yukon work intermittently. When driving the truck first thing in the morning at speeds of 15mph to 20 mph brakes fail to engage and have had several close calls.

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Yukon xl. While driving at any speed and applying the brakes, the pedal would stiffen and not moved downward completely. The failure recurred continuously. The vehicle was driven to a mechanic who diagnosed that the power assist brake system failed. The VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 04v045000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 130,000.
I was traveling on Saturday morning, in my dads 2004 Yukon luckily it was early enough not much traffic at the time, it was raining and I was not driving very fast normal speed on the highway is 40 miles per hour on us11 because of congestion and traffic lights, I was traveling between 30 and 35 mph because of rain, anyways a light changed and I had time to stop, but the vehicle did not stop the pedal went almost to the floor and the light came on stating brake failure, from that point I slowed down as slow as I could and tried to test the brakes, it would stop, but needed plenty of distance, so I slowed for a turn off, and when I got home, started to brake before entering the driveway so that I would not hit the garage or anything else, in fact I stopped the vehicle at the end of the driveway near the road.
Brake failed when applied. Mechanic said line is rusted causing leak.
Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Yukon xl. The contact was driving approximately 60 mph when the accelerate got stuck and the vehicle speed increased. The contact pressed the brakes and the brakes failed so the contact used the emergency brake which slowed the vehicle down, but the vehicle would not stop so the contact jumped out of the vehicle at approximately 35 mph which in a half mile the vehicle crashed. The vehicle was towed and the manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 70,000. Rk.
