Third row seat in 2007 Yukon xl is potentially unsafe. Vehicle is marketed as capable of seating adults in third row seat, but does not provide adequate seat belts and space for said adults. Seat belts are of insufficient length for adults, and the ratchet mechanism does not operate properly. Furthermore, the lack of sufficient foot room, leg room, hip room and shoulder room may cause said adults to seat themselves incorrectly--and to purposely avoid the use of seat belts--such that they predispose themselves to serious injuries or death in the event of an accident.
The contact owns a 2001 GMC Yukon. He stated that the rear lap belts would bind up near the shoulder panel. When this occurred the seat belts would not retract or extend which caused them to remain in a locked position. The manufacturer stated that a diagnostic test should be performed. The failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 87,000. Updated 01-16-08. The rear driver side and passenger side seat belts bind up in the upper shoulder guide causing the seat belts to be jammed. When jammed, the seat belts do no retract or extend to properly fit a passenger. The dealer stated the problem was a design flaw in the seat belt guide arrangement. Updated.

Second row outside safety belts intermittently do not retract or allow extension. Seats are presently used with booster seats for twin boys, and intermittent failures have caused us to have to move boosters to other seats for safety reasons.

The contact was slowing down to come to a stop and the abs light and parking light came on. He increased his stopping distance in order to get the vehicle to come to a stop. Took the vehicle to the dealer; they hooked it up to a diagnostic machine. The dealer stated it needed a new electronic box. There was no free remedy to fix the box. The seat belt on the passenger's side in the second row of the vehicle locked in the buckle, other times it will come loose while in the seat belt. Also when turning the vehicle to the right or left one could hear a clicking sound. The dealer was not willing to fix it free of charge.
Rear seat belts in 2000 GMC Yukons fail to retract, providing no safety for children in the rear seat when seated in child restraint seats that are not semi-permanently mounted in the rear with the seat belt threaded through them. Child seats that use the seat belt as the primary restraining device are useless when the belts do not tighten. This is a known problem to GMC and the dealer has repaired and/or replaced the seat belt on several occassions. The dealer's recommendation is to not pull the belt out all the way because it may not retract - sometimes hard to enforce with children. The solution is fairly simple - the affected vehicles should have a redesigned seat belt mechanism provided to vehicle owners, either by recall or on request.
