GMC Yukon owners have reported 273 problems related to tail light switch (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of GMC Yukon based on all problems reported for the Yukon.
Left and right braking lights some time do not work when braking. Only the reverse light will work while the braking light will not. To add, when the front headlights are on, some times the left and right tail lights (light that is on when not braking) and braking lights will not work. I have had two different people pull up next to me saying my brake lights are out in the last two weeks. However, I have observed when they are working in that same time span. The last two days, only the right tail/braking light is not work.

Rear break light . Internal wiring of the tail lights cracks leading to tail light failure. The failure does not trigger any warnings and the driver is unaware of this failure unless they preform a pre trip inspection.

The brake light is out and a single tail light is over 500$.
I see almost 200 complaints and nothing has been done? not sure the point of this website, but, I'm going to put my 2 cents in. My 2016 Yukon denali passanger brake light has gone out, like many, many of other people. Why isn't this a recall? obviously, there is a manufacturing issue that needs to be addressed. After many videos I have watched I see that the circit board comes apart and can't be repaired but only replaced, at a extremly high price. I've also seen many tail light on these Yukons work off and on, so, randomly they can not work at any time and possibly get you rear ended. How do I file a civil action complaint to have GMC address this complaint and resolve this issue? please advise.

Rear led tail lights failing. 1 has been replaced already, second, opposite side is now failing.
Rear tail lights inoperable and brake lights not operating. When I asked dealer about problem they said gm had extended the warranty on the tail light assemblies since they new there was a problem. I was never notified of them extending the warranty. Vehicle does not have any rear lights working which is extreme safety hazard.
Both rear tail lights are inoperable and the dealer wants over $800 to replace. I'm over the mileage limit for the recall so I'm out of luck.
Both rear tail light assemblies went bad. The left one in April of 2019 and the right one in January of 2021. Service advisors in the 2 dealerships I deal with claim the do not know anything about it. Yet a number of repair shops on the internet know of this problem in 2015 to 2019 Yukon's because they repair them. Funny that gm does not. I sent the 1st one out and it was repaired for well under the cost of a new one. I complained again to the service advisor about this one to no avail. Going to send it out for repair as well. Incidentally they cover the repair with a lifetime warranty.
Purchased a 2015 Yukon denali back in November 2019. Since purchasing the vehicle we have had to replace the battery, transmission, ac compressor and expansion valve (which still isn't working correctly, because it doesn't blow cold air), and the black panels that are in between the windows. Also, both tail lights have decided to quit working. . . . Which concerns me greatly because cars behind me don't know when I am stopped or applying the breaks. Stopped or have my foot on the break.
Driver tail light works inconsistently.
Tail lights go out. I have read multiple posts about this issue, but yet there is no safety recall issued for this. It is very expensive to replace the lights and I am afraid if I do, the same issue will exist.
Faulty tail lights. Tail light does not consistently stay lit. This faulty light is going to cause an accident.
Major safety issues with this vehicle. Another 2015 Yukon with no tail or stop lights. I'm over millage on special recall. There should be no time/millage issue on this. Seat belts lock up. Brakes are either good or mussy whenever they want to be. Hard to stop the vehicle. Also when I first purchased the vehicle it would completely die (no lights motor died, no power steering, no air bags, no radio nothing at all on the x-way at 70 mph) and the dealer could not repair it! rust on frame rails. (and more).
Right read tail light, brake light and reverse light stopped working at 61,135 miles on odometer reading for no apparent reason.
My passenger side tail light assembly need to be replaced as the brake lights are not working. This has become a common problem as evidenced by the number of complaints filed on your site for the same issue. Lack of properly functioning tail lights is a major safety concern and a recall should be issued.
Rear tail lights (brake lights) work intermittently. There is a "special coverage adjustment" but it is set for a maximum number of miles or time (6-years). I have a 2016 GMC Yukon xl. The passenger's side was replaced in 2018 and now the driver's side is defective/inoperable. But because we are at 96000 they won't repair.
The rear tail light keeps going out. It was already replaced once at my dealership. Now the same light less than 3 years is not functioning. Posing a safety concern as other vehicles would not see me at a complet stop due to my rear passenger light not working. This should be a safety recall. Its a very common this is a manufacturing defect and GMC should have this fixed ASAP. Tried calling GMC and they said they would not help me with the repair cost of my rear passenger tail light. I stated this was a safety issue and required their attention. To no avail I was denied any assistance. The light itself at my dealership is $800 not including labor. This is my every day family driver car. I have been stopped by cops and given warnings and by other passer by's that my brake light is not functioning safely and appropriately. This needs to be escalted to a safety recall. As there are many threads with other GMC Yukon owners having the same issues. Thank you.
Right rear tail light and brake light stoped working. It is an led light and very expensive. This is a safety concern as lack of a brake light on one side is in violation of legal requirements. Led lights should not quit functioning after 5 years and 85,000 miles.
Rear tail light circuit boards breaking and causing brake lights or tail lights ti fail or not work.
Tail lights/brake lights /signal lights go on and go off danger of being hit from the rear dealer and independent service has confirmed defect and say it is common vehicle has not been inspected be the police or insurance there was no warning lamps or messages first discover 2 years ago when drivers would pull up and say the lights were out. . . . . . We would stop and look they would come back on.
Driver side tail light went out, when you pull the light out it starts to work, replace the light back into the car and it dies again. This seem to be a issues with a lot of people. Its very costly to have to keep replacing led tail lights!.
Rear tail lights not working. Both tail lights require replacement. There is an open recall for 2016 GMC Yukon's why is there not an open recall for 2015? this is obviously an issue based on the number of complaints made / reported here.
Right rear tail light / brake light quit working. Vehicle has 74,200 miles. Whole tail light assembly has to be replaced. This is a $800 dollar repair for a defective part that gm knows is defective and a safety issue. How is it a vehicle manufacturer can sell a vehicle with a defective part? this is a sealed part that the owner cannot repair on their own. This issue is not due to owner neglect or misuse but manufacturer's defect.
Passenger side tail light is out and could potentially be hazardous when operating vehicle. This is a huge safety concern and a law that every motor vehicle shall be equipped with at least two working tail lamps. Gm has manufactured inadequate and faulty parts that one do not comply with the law that vehicles should be equipped with at least 2 working tail lamp and could cause serious harm to the customers whose vehicles are equipped with the defective parts. Many customers have reported concern but gm has failed to find resolution for the safety of their customers. The product has not been recalled and will only be replaced by gm under special coverage which has expired in most 2015-2016 vehicles. Defective parts need to be re-called for the 2015-2016 Yukon vehicles and replaced by products that are safer and non hazardous to customers before someone is seriously injured.
Rear tail light stopped working going on and off and according to the auto electrician my vehicle could have gotten on fire due to the faulty lights. Upon searching for answers to why my vehicle's back lights were not working, I came upon many other consumers experiencing the same issue. Not only is the cost to replace the lamps so high, we risk in driving a vehicle that could catch fire for such cheaply made lights. And I state this because the auto electrician said that the wire would heat up while driving the vehicle and cause further damages to my Yukon. While driving, you can hear a clear chirping noise that is produced when you brake. This also happens while the vehicle is stationary.
In March 2019 passenger side tail light started working intermittently- took it to the dealer and had it replaced ($800) one year later (may 2020) driver side tail light stopped working completely.
Both tail lights stopped working on the freeway during my trip to san diego from phoenix. About halfway here one tail light went out in about 20 miles later the other one stopped working. I know this because a friend was following me. I called the dealership, he stated that the tail lights are on national backorder and won't be in for a week plus. Now I am driving around California with no brake lights. . I only have 48,000 miles on this SUV, each tail light is $760 the only way to repair this is to replace them. Thank you gm I will be forwarding you my ticket. .
Tl- the contact owns a 2016 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that the rear tail an brake lights failed without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where one set was the tail and brake lights were replaced. The contact also stated that the second set was also replaced with a period of two weeks. The contact called wiesner Buick GMC dealer, 1645 interstate 45 n, conroe, TX 77304 and mention the failure, the dealer informed the contact that they was aware of the failure. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. But was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000. Aw.
The left tail light was not turning on when starting the car. Left tail light does not come on when pressing brake. At first, it was intermittent and now it does not come on at all.
Passenger side tail light/brake light goes out intermittently at random. I purchased car used in February 2020 and was informed soon after by friend that my tail light was out when leaving their home. It was working the next day when I checked. I now watch it and see that it works only sometimes. Cost to replace is approximately $700 assuming only a replacement light is needed and nothing else is wrong. Based on the multiple complaints I have seen this sounds like a wiring issue that should be a manufacturer recall for safety reasons.
First, passenger side tail light was going on and off. Sometimes the whole panel would not turn on. Then, a few weeks later the other tail light started doing the same thing and now both brake lights do not come on. They will sporadically start working again ever so often.
Tl-the contact owns a 2016 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, a police officer advised her that the passenger side tail light was out. The vehicle was driven to the dealer edwards motors, 1825 veterans pkwy s, moultrie, GA 31788, they determined that the passenger side tail assembly had to be preplaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 73,200. Bp.
The rear tail light led has malfunctioned and will not work or works intermittently.
GMC recently advised us that the tailgate lights have had problems where they "intermittently" do not illuminate. We have had this issue for quite sometime where drivers cannot see our tailgate lights when the problem occurs. Because it has been intermittent, it has been very hard for the shop to diagnose as when they get it and it is on, they can't figure out what is wrong with it. Since we received the letter from GMC, we have been into the dealership to get it resolved, but they will not do it because our miles are over. I have told them that they know its an issue and that it is intermittent and when people take it into the shop to get it diagnose, its a hit and miss. I have now seen over a dozen other GMC's on the road with the same issue. Last week, while traveling with kids to a soccer tournament, both weren't working at night and we were pulled over. I fortunately had the letter in the car and showed it to him. He gave me a warning and advised that it is very difficult for cars to see at night when there are no tailgates on and that GMC had better get this resolved. I have made two requests with GMC and they have denied the request. I even told them that I would cost share if we meet in the middle and they would not. They know this is an issue, yet they aren't willing to extend the warranty or make it a recall. This is very dangerous and could cause a lot of accidents with GMC models nationwide. I hope that this is brought to someone's attention and that GMC is encouraged to get this resolved with 2015 Yukon xl suvs and that we and many others are able to get their tailgates replaced.
Both tail lights (brake lights and running lights in red) stop working with no warning to the driver. Third brake light does continue to work. This is noticed when parked and when in motion. This is a safety issue for other drivers crashing into our vehicle because they do not know that we are braking. A friend had to point this out to us in the school pickup line. First noticed on 2/13/20. Had to buy two new taillight assemblies and install.
