Car veered left hard, nearly crashed across multiple lanes on I-95 south in ormond beach, FL. Power steering failed, wouldn't stop veering left and hard to turn right. Had to replace rack and pinion and power steering gear box. No warning signs in car to note. Problem confirmed at auto solutions ormond beach as power steering and gear box.
Steering rack/ pinion : cars steering wheel just randomly turning on its own to the left and become hard to steer when driving on highway at higher speed.
I was getting off the highway and was driving home along the service road when I noticed the steering wheel automatically turned on its own, causing me to almost crash into parked cars. No lights appeared on my dash and it was out of the ordinary. Luckily I was off the highway driving at low speeds, otherwise I would have injured multiple people. The steering wheel became so hard to control requiring you to grip the steering wheel to turn it. Once you let go of the steering wheel, it would turn really fast on its own to the right. I tried turning on and off the car, unplugging the battery, but the issue was still there. I took it to the Honda dealer and also contacted corporate in which I was told that the rack and pinion is bad, and if the car doesn't show a code, they won't cover it. My car only has 46k miles, and a big safety issue like this should have been covered or partially covered. Instead, I was told it was going to be over $3k for install and parts, which is ridiculous.
While backing out of a residential driveway onto a busy neighborhood street, the steering wheel locked up and the steering malfunction warning light came on. I attempted to steer the vehicle but the electronic power steering(eps) was countering the steering effort. I tried multiple times to restart the vehicle in hopes to regain steering control, but the vehicle would not operate properly. The only way I was able to regain steering control was with the car off and in neutral, meaning I had no ability to accelerate to maneuver the vehicle from oncoming traffic, relying only on the momentum of the sloped road to help guide the vehicle safely away from traffic lanes. I had the vehicle towed the the dealer the next morning. Service adviser looked up vehicle history and the recall for eps controller software had already been performed 2 years prior. Honda had extended the warranty on the rack and pinion system due to known torque sensor failure issues. Adviser said if, obd scan shows fault code relating to torque sensor failure, Honda would cover complete cost to replace entire rack and pinion system. Hours later, adviser contacts me and says the scan shows that it was not the the torque sensor that failed, but the electronic power steering computer failed and needed to be replaced at my cost. I argued that there was no possible way for the consumer to prevent such an issue from occurring, and the fact that a computer system controlling the steering failed while I was operating the vehicle is an alarming safety issue that american Honda should look into and I should not have to bear the burden of paying for such a repair. Vehicle has 83,100 miles, original owner and all scheduled maintenance performed at same dealer. Never had prior steering issues and was never advised of any potential issues. Honda sympathetically only agreed to cover half the repair cost.
While on vacation in the mountains of tennessee the eps indicator came on the instrument display. That was failure of the power steering! it came on when starting the car after driving it for a short slow drive, which seems to be the major contributing factor--slow speed with acceleration. After having the software updated (which did not fix this issue) I am being told only the rack & pinion portion of the eps has been extended to be covered by Honda and not the eps control unit which is the code my car is showing. Excuse me! the steering of a vehicle is a major deal. Honda should fix this and be glad to do it. This is a huge safety issue and should not be taken lightly. I am being told the repair cost is about $750. This has really put a bad taste in my mouth for Honda; this is the fourth Accord I have owned but will probably be the last one. Shame on Honda for not standing behind their vehicles and components. Shame on the NHTSA for not forcing them to recall these cars and keep us all safer on the roadways when the complaints are numerous for the same issue!.
2013 Honda Accord (20k miles) issue: defective rack-n-pinion I attempted to put my Accord in reverse and realized that I wasn't able to steer out of the driveway. It appeared that the steering wheel locked up or something was holding me from backing up. I also noticed an orange steering wheel indicator on my dash. (please keep in mind that my vehicle is in great condition. I've have it for over a year and I have never had this happen). I attempted to start my car a second time. This time it turned on just as before and the orange indicator light turned off. I felt it may have just been a fluke and I began driving down the street. However, not even half-a-mile down from my parents’ house my Accord steering wheel locked up again! this time it happened in the middle of the road while I was driving and while other vehicles were driving on the opposite side of the road. I could not maneuver my vehicle off the road. I just barely managed to angle the front part of my vehicle to the edge of a curb while the second half of the car was still in the street. Dealership informed me that it was a defective electric rack-n-pinion which caused my steering wheel to lock up. I asked him if this was a recall, or vehicle malfunction and he couldn't completely 100% provide me with an explanation. He did inform me that it’s going to be a $1,200 part to be serviced and that I will probably be without my own Accord for about a week. I strongly feel that the Honda corp should be aware of this issue, so I contacted Honda via twitter. I felt completely brushed off and the rep, he said well sorry to hear that sir but they are repairing the issue sir. This was my second and last Honda that I would purchase. I know I'm not the only one with this issue. Honda should definitely look into it. The rep told me that they haven't had this issue previously-doubt it!.
The contact owns a 2013 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the power steering assist malfunctioned as the wheels seized and the power steering warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the rack and pinion assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 3,000 and the current mileage was 6,000. The VIN was not available.
