This is a general complaint for the front seat belt buckles used on a wide variety of Honda vehicles over multiple production years being able to unlatch during a collision. To keep this complaint form brief, only the main topics will be discussed. The defect consists of the seatbelt failing to fully latch in place if a small amount of a beverage (usually soda pop) is spilled into the seatbelt housing. After drying, the beverage residue becomes sticky and the design of the seatbelt buckle prevents the buckle from latching securely. The failure mode can be either the seatbelt not latching at all or the buckle giving a 'false latch' condition meaning that the seatbelt tongue clicks and seems to hold in place normally to the occupant but if pulled firmly it will release. Obviously, this is a major safety concern to occupants. Honda has known about this defect and even has returned warranty parts (estimate over 1000 failures have been returned by customers) that it has categorized as bsr (brown sticky residue). This problem goes back at least as far as 1994 (with the 1994 style design being especially prone to this failure). As stated, Honda has received many failures of this type back but has taken no action to correct the problem. It is unknown how many people may have been wearing their seat belt but when in a collision it unlatched and allowed them to be injured. Furthermore, with Honda placing a cupholder just inches away from the seatbelt buckle (and with the buckle designed in a funnel shape), it is obvious that Honda knew beverages would be in close proximity to the buckle. This is a very serious problem and I hope that an investigation will be conducted to help save lives. Forcing Honda to present the information about the warranty claims it has received for seat belt buckles over the past several years would show that Honda has known of the defect but has taken no steps to correct it or inform its customers of the danger.

Seatbelt switch failed and turned on the "srs" dashboard indicator light and thus disables the airbag system the vehicle.
Plastic "button" that keeps the seat belt buckle at shoulder level ( easy reach position) broke off. Thus when trying to put on seat belt, first have to pick the seat belt buckle off the floor. Also broke off a friends vehicle of the same make, model, and year.
My 2000 Honda Accord gives me a problem with: 1st my passenger seat belt. It's extremly hard to fasten. 2nd my Accord stalles every time I atempt to take off from a complete stop. Also, there is a roaring bumping sound comming from around my exaust system.

Vehicle air bag light remained illuminatedwhile driving. Vehicle was taken to the dealer on two separate occasions, and they could not duplicate the problem. Buckle assembly for drivers restraint belts failed to remain latched also, buckle assembly may appear to be latched, but while braking or going around a corner latch plate will separate, preventing proper use of restraint system. Passenger's front seat belt buckle will not stay fastened. Belt will lock but can easily become undone. Dealer will be contacted.
Seat belts on both sides of front have opened by themselves after seeming to be latched; first time was driver's side, I took it to local dealer who "cleaned" it even though I saw no dirt, seems to be working; but now the passenger side is doing the same thing, opening by itself during driving; again took it to local dealer, they offered to "clean" it again but I said no, I did not see any dirt and they told me that if someone had spilled a drink on it the seat belt would not work any more; I advised north american Honda (tina at 1-800-999-1009, ext. 118088, case number n-012001-10-18-00512), they offered to replace seat belt with new one but of same design and I said no. To sum up, belts appear to be latched but are not, and I did not see any dirt or other barriers, and furthermore even if someone did actually spill a drink I cannot imagine that would cause a seatbelt (twice now) to fail to stay closed. I am convinced this design is not safe.
When seat belt is being used buckle releases from locking mechanism.

The seat belt retainer latch (that receives the tip of the seat belt) does not retain the seat belt. The seat belt looks as though it is properly installed but it can be pulled loose with moderate effort. It is quite possible for someone to think that the seat belt is working ok when its not. It may be that this condition is common enough for you to be keeping a file on it. If you want more information I will send it to you. I am a retired engineer with automotice experience so you can get accurate information from me if you want it. The dealer has offered to replace the seat belt latch at no cost. Honda has a lifetime guarantee. I can suppose that many failures of this type could occur in accidents but be attributed to impropper seat belt use. This could hide a condition that could have killed many people. You might want to check the national accident files. I can delay having the belt fixed for a few days if you want to confirm that it is indeed defective.
Passenger side seat belt buckle was defective. When the vehicle goes around a corner the passenger buckle comes loose.

Front seat belt buckles will intermmitenly fail to engage. Seemingly when it's cold, the buckle will "click" as if it is locked, but after a short pull for verification, it comes undone. Requires 5-10 additional attempts before it will lock. Driver's buckle started failing in oct-98; front passenger's started Dec-98.
Whenever someone tries to get into the seat belt the belt gets stuck, and they can't use the seat belt. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and they fixed the problem. But whenever someone gets into the passenger's seat the problem occurs.
