I own a 1998 Honda Accord and the retractor on the drivers side front seat has frequently failed to re-coil catching on the lever that moves the seat to a reclining position. Due to the fact that I failed to notice that this was happening until to late , it eventually caused the seat motor to "burn" out . The local Honda dealer wanted to charge me just under $800. 00 to replace the motor , obviously that is un -acceptable to me . Do I have any recourse ?.

Failure Date: 12/06/2001

I was alone and stopped at a red light when a vehicle hit me from behind. I had no warning of the approaching car since the driver had fallen asleep. His airbag deployed. My car was knocked directly forward into the truck in front of me, and that truck was knocked into the van in front of it. My airbags did not deploy and my seatbelt/shoulder harness did not prevent me from fracturing my eye-socket on the steering wheel. Based on the force of the impact, I believe that my shoulder harness should have prevented this devastating injury. After repairs that did not include replacing the harness, I am still subject to the same type of injury.

29 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

Driver's side seat belt may not retract immediately when you exit the car. If it doesn't, it will retract, but will get caught on the power seat controls. When it retracts, it pulls the seat recline lever and causes the seat back to recline until it cannot do so because it is stopped by the rear seat. One time this happened, I was out of the car for five minutes and when I got back in, I could smell the power seat motor burning - the seat belt was forcing the driver's seat to recline. If one of my kids were in the back seat, she would have been pinned and could have been severely injured. I took the car to the dealer and they said nothing could be done (except for some type of guard over the power seat controls). I think this is a design flaw - not a manufacturing defect. Please let me know if others have had this problem. Its a great car other than this strange problem.
