1 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2016 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/16/2020

Ac compressor seal broke after 40,000 miles. Honda has had this problem on these cars but haven't issued a recall! they want $2000 to fix their mistake. With no ac my wife was borderline getting heat exhaustion. Stationary.

2 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2012 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

There is a strong smell of exhaust if you stand next to the car while it's idling & parked or stationary. I bought the car in 2014 or 15 and noticed it soon after. I've had it checked for exhaust leaks a few times, but no one has found one. It seems like it could cause problems with emissions, and let fumes into the passenger compartment if a door or window was open long enough.

3 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/20/2012

Car started at usual time around 8 am and started vibrating. A very loud exhaust noise started to begin and the car began shaking. The vibrating noise was so loud and everyone in the car could feel the vibration. The front steering wheel as well as the seats were also shaking. Vibrating continued throughout the day and was gone at times when this first began but as days went by it became louder and more obvious by others outside of the car. The car now continues to vibrate not only in the morning but at all times of the day. It shakes at park, drive, and reverse. Car is very uncomfortable to drive and the noise can become very distracting. The car also vibrates so much during these times that I am afraid that something will happen on the highway and am worried about this. Honda dealer will not cover this under power train warranty because the car is now passed the warranty for power train which is 5 year/60,000 miles. Please look into this matter. It seems very common as I researched online and many people are having this issue on their Honda's which most seem after the 2005 models, more common around 2007 + 2008 models.

4 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

2005 Honda Civic hybrid: engine light came on and has been determined that the catalytic converter needs replacing along with the co2 sensors, cost $2000. 00. What causes a cat conv to go bad? Honda could not provide this information and refused to look into any service bulletins or recalls. This vehicle is only 6 years old, 83045 miles. We have had numerous issues with this veicle, including the clutch, replacement of hybrid battery, seat belts and now this.

5 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/07/2011

I took my car in for service and they told me the exhaust manifold was cracked. This is the third time this part has cracked. I had it replaced twice already at the dealership- they did not cover the part under warranty and I paid $1000 each time to have it replaced. I tried to contact american Honda and they refused to compensate me for it.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/23/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Civic. While the vehicle was being serviced at an authorized dealer, the contact was advised by the mechanic that the catalytic converter was fractured and leaking exhaust into the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic advised her to drive with the windows down to help keep out the exhaust fumes. She then called the manufacturer and was advised that her vehicle was no longer under warranty and no assistance would be provided. The failure mileage was 155,700 and the current mileage was 162,000.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

I have a 98 Honda Civic lx, it seems the exhaust manifold on these cars are defective they crack and the gas emissions are circulated to the cabin of the automobile. The exhaust manifold should not crack on normal use. Carbon monoxide CO could leak to the cabin of the car, and is poisonous to humans and children. There are a lot of Honda Civics out here with crack exhaust manifold, it is hard to find the culprit, because the exhaust manifold is covered with a metal cover, but you will notice the smell inside the cabin of the car, when the car is at running. The NHTSA should investigate on this defective.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/07/2009

Tl * the contact owns a 2001 Honda Civic. When driving he smelled a strong odor of fuel inside of the vehicle. He speculated that the odor of gasoline was related to the exhaust system. Also the front passenger side power window was inoperative. No repairs were made. The failure mileage and current mileages were unknown.

9 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/02/2009

I had a check engine light indicating a bad catalytic converter on my 2000 Honda Civic. The cat was replaced under warranty by the dealer in March '08 only to have the exact same scenario repeated in July '08. Now I'm facing the same situation again. So in summary, the catalytic converter has now been replaced 3 times in a 20 month period. From all my research this is very rare. My suspicions are that the electronic control module (ecm) is defective and truly the root of the problem. However, I believe that the dealer has purposely avoided revealing the ecm as possible cause as it would be a costly repair for them as the ecm falls under epa emissions warranty. .

10 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/28/2009

2007 Honda Civic lx became completely disabled while driving. On the road, the car stopped without prior engine warning lights. Vehicle was towed to dealer. Dealer serviceman reports a bolt was severed possibly factory error. Damages incurred were broken timing chain, rocker arm bolt broken, broken head and major leakage. Serviceman reports all parts replaced, however vehicle no longer works at full capacity. Engine/transmission makes grinding noise. Additional noises from rear suspension also. Vehicle returned for service 2x's since incident without success. Current problems, (noise and sluggishness) occur after vehicle is driven for more than 1 hour. Customer requested old parts at time of service, but were not given. Serviceman stated parts were returned to the factory for inspection.

11 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

My check engine light came on. The next month during an oil change I had my mechanic look at it. They ran diagnostics and inspected my exhaust and informed me that there is a defect in this model that causes the oxygen sensor to be triggered. Since the oxygen sensor is part of the same assembly as the catalytic converter, the component was very expensive. They informed me that there was a recall on similar Honda vehicles of similar years and that I should contact Honda to get it fixed. After many calls with Honda, they refused stating that my year and model was excluded, despite having identical issues.

12 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/19/2009

Car has been running fine since I had purchased it as a secondhand vehicle. At 130,xxx miles, the check engine light came on, upon using a obd2 scanner, it was discovered that the primary oxygen sensor heater has malfunctioned. When the heat shield to the exhaust manifold was removed, a huge crack about 2 inches was found in the center of the manifold above the oxygen sensor.

13 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/07/2009

2000 Honda Civic dx-vp O2 sensor failed at 125,000 miles due to a cracked exhaust manifold at the sensor - no information as to how much earlier the crack might have occurred before the sensor was damaged. The sensor failure generates an error code and causes the check engine light to come on, and creates rough idling and stalling in traffic, creating serious safety issues. The vehicle will not pass the state emissions inspection in that condition. The only way to correct the issue is to replace the cracked exhaust manifold and catalytic converter assembly along with the O2 sensor. Honda was contacted and denies knowledge of any significant issues with cracked manifolds and sensor failures on 2000 Honda Civics and refuses to provide any assistance with repairs. It is well documented that the cracked manifold is a significant problem on Civics on all model years from 1996 to 2003. Honda issued extended warranties on many of these model years that fails to provide any assistance to most owners, since the defect commonly appears outside of the extended warranty period. Honda and it's dealers are also being allowed to generate additional revenues from the sale of replacement manifolds and installation to correct the very defect that it created. This defect has not yet been corrected on my vehicle due to the expense involved ($1000) and the vehicle inspection not expiring until August. This is clearly a well documented defect for which Honda should be held accountable. Honda should be required to make the repairs or provide some type of assistance or compensation to the owners for the repairs, which are necessary in order to pass state vehicle inspection and keep the vehicle operating legally, and to prevent serious safety issues from the stalls in traffic.

14 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/20/2008

Honda Civic exhaust manifold for 2001 model is defective. When my check engine light came on I took in the car for service check and the mechanic reveled to me that there was a one inch crack in the exhaust manifold. After saving up $800 for a replacement I ordered a new one. That was in 2008. Now coming into the new year find myself in the same predicament with a less than two year old part. This defect is widespread and I have yet to purchased a new one for fear it will suffer the same cracked fate. This part and labor are too expensive to require a constant replacement. I have has the part welded twice but that does not stay for longer than 3 months. Not having a properly working part has lead to the property damage car the crack has caused a horrible puffing sound and undue buildup up in the exhaust system.

15 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/05/2008

After about 75,000 miles on my 2005 Honda Civic, I began to notice I got a headache and upset stomach while driving the car. The local Honda dealer discovered a cracked exhaust manifold, and indicated the possibility of carbon monoxide entering the cabin during vehicle operation. I have not yet repaired the condition since the repair cost is very high, about $1000. I have since heard that this is a common problem with this vehicle, and not a result of age or abuse.

16 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

When my 1998 Honda Civic was at 90,891 miles, the Honda dealer service department told me the exhaust manifold was cracked and needed to be replaced. The repair was about $1000. Only 2 years later, they told me the new exhaust manifold was cracked and needed to be replaced again. The service manager told me that this replacement part should last much longer but he was unwilling to stand behind this repair and charged me another $1000 to repair it again.

17 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/11/2008

Exhaust manifold is cracked for 2nd time; also have 2 other Honda Civics (99 and 97) with same problem - obvious manufacturers defect. Honda will not cover repairs.

18 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/24/2007

Exhaust manifold have a big crack causing a check engine light and exhaust fumes to migrate to the cabin since it is in front of the car. Honda have an existing service bulletin 98-081 that only covers 96-97 Civics and not 1998 models but they did not do the re-design until 99. It is a well known flaw but Honda does not have a recall for it.

19 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/15/2007

Took my car in for regular service, immediately after picking it up, car kept rattling & sputtering. Came back in and they stated "suddenly" the manifold was cracked & the bolt for the heat shield was broken off. Looked online & saw that there are many many issues with cracked manifolds with Civics, so much that a handful of model years (but not mine) was recalled. Mine is just considered out of warranty, & is now a safety (fumes can cause sickness) & environmental issue. Given how I babied this car, the only reason this would have cracked is either a major design flaw/weakness (or the mechanics really messed up my car). Since it's such a major reported (ignored) issue, it's clearly a design flaw.

20 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/01/2007

Year 2003: 1 O2 sensor replaced year 2007: engine light on. Was informed due to oxygen O2 sensor bad and also a cracked exhaust manifold. Car acts like it will stall when stopped at a light. I am very concerned. According to the dealership, only some Honda Civics with a particular VIN # qualify for replacement of oxygen/O2 sensor and exhaust manifold. They stated that mine did not (only up to 1997 qualify) and there is no recall for 1998. According to the internet, there are other complaints for this problem for 1998 Honda Civics. Please investigate .

21 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/01/2006

Had taken car to get inspection. Would not pass due to the exhaust manifold having a crack in. This car had 59827 miles on it! naturally I was very upset. This car was only used minimally as witnessed by the year vs miles. Hardly any hwy use. Contacted the dealership and they put up their hands. Can't fix because I don't have $ 2,000. Car will not pass insp. Due to strict codes in texas. I now have my fifth Honda. Honda just dropped the big one on a loyal cust. !!!!!!!.

22 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/17/2006

Cracked exhaust manifold which leads to exhaust gases being blown into the car when in traffic or at idle. These gases create a danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.

23 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/31/2003

Vehicle was sluggish and consuming more gas; a rattling noise at acceleration after being idle for awhile; accelerated with reduced power. I took it into the shop and was told the exhaust manafold was cracked. The car is no longer making the noise and is running as it should, but the cost to me was $620 (mostly in the Honda part).

24 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/03/2003

10 months ago I became aware of exhaust smell inside my 98 Honda Civic lx VIN-2hgej6672wh574910. The problem was worse when I idled the car for a quick warm up before driving. The problem got worse and I was getting headaches each day after my commute to work. Complained of I removed the heat shield from the engine to investigate the source of the exhaust leak. I found the exhaust manifold had split approx. On each side of the "y" for a total crack of 6 inches. This was allowing large amounts of exhaust gas to enter the cabin when using the heater or a/c. I was informed by four Honda dealers locally that the problem was well known and all 7 local dealers had many manifolds in stock in their parts department. This was an indication to me that many of these were breaking and I was far from alone on this issue. The replacement manifold part number is- 18160-p2e-a12. At ken garff Honda in ogden utah, I was told that an extended warranty was in effect for the problem for 8 years or 80k miles. (my Civic has 93,000 miles) they stated this was a very common problem for 96,97 and 98 Honda Civics to have. My concern is if I had sufficient exhaust gas in my cabin to make me ill and the problem was widespread that this could be a serious safety / health issue. A person sitting in their closed, idling car with the ac/heater on they could potentially succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning. With the above in mind, I contacted american Honda motor CO. Customer service at 800-999-1009 to relay my information and discuss the issue. I spoke with a woman named stephanie who told me she would record my concern. I am also concerned that were no symptoms to alert me to the problem other than odor. A non "auto savvy" person could easily overlook the gradually worsening problem just like I did until they died. Please investigate the scope of this issue further and I am convinced that this is a widespread issue due to the feedback I got. Thank you.

25 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/19/2003

Dealer replaced the ignition switch under recall. Also the alternator replaced . But the intermittent problem to start the vehicle continued. There was intermittent grinding noise when the vehicle was started. Since the noise didn't occur when the consumer bought it to the dealer, they refused to do anything about it. Also the oxygen sensor was replaced.

26 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/01/2003

Exhaust manifold/catalytic converter assy. Is badly cracked. Manifold/converter makes noise and exhaust can be smelled in passenger compartment. Manifold/converter assy. Was already replaced once at approx. 50,000 miles for the same problem. The problem was noticed again at approx. 100,000 miles.

27 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

The check engine light came on; it turned out that the O2 sensor had blown. We were about to have it replaced when our mechanic suggested that he had seen a bunch of Honda Civics with the same problem and as it turned out, the exhaused manifold had cracked causing the O2 sensor to go. When our Civic was check, this was exactly the case. It is ~$1000 for parts alone. We believe Honda knows this problem exsists and will not recall due to the cost.

28 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/01/2001

Exhaust system failure.

29 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

32 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/01/1999

Emissions control unit failed in July 1999. Unit is directly linked to the on board diagnostics system (obd). Honda dealer noted problem in July 1999, after I brought the car in for testing, because the "engine problem" light stayed on for a few days. Dealer claims to have ordered part, which is on back order. Have been trying to get in touch with the manufacturer, american Honda, to find out when the part will be available. I have not met with any success. Difficult to get in touch with someone about the problem. Promises to return my calls are never kept. Car does not drive properly. Idles very rough. . . Drives sluggish. Can you help??.

33 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1996 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/01/1999

No summary listed for above vehicle.

34 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1996 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/06/1998

I was driving and the auto just stopped. This was fixed and less then 2 years later the same thing happen I was driving and the enjine stopped. The same thing has been replaced twice. I find it unusual that they are willing to fix this under another recall for emission warranty , when I submitted to be reinbursed it was denied. The first time the mechanic said that the coils and inginition looked as if it had caught on fire. I am getting concerned over this and the future of this ignitions.

35 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Consumer has exhaust concerns. There was a small crack at the catalytic convertor. There was also some rattling noises heard. An a-pipe heat shield was replaced.
