10 Engine problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

In November 2009, I purchased a used 2007 Honda Civic from a used dealership in alpharetta, GA. It was purchased as is so I immediately took it to voyles Honda in marietta, GA for a total check-up. The car was serviced and given the green light. It had 74,960 miles on it at the time. On March 8, 2010, on my way back home from jacksonville, FL the car started to decelerate quickly. I was on i95 northbound with my son, and it was a very scary few moments for us. We managed to park the car on the emergency lane. The car would not come back on. When we looked under the hood, there was no smoke but there was a funny smell. My son took the dipstick out of the engine and it was melted! we had to have the car towed to yulee to a local mechanic who said the engine was gone. After staying in a local hotel for the night, my husband picked us up on March 9. When I got home I made arrangements to have the car towed to grainger Honda in savannah. Grainger gets the car in and after a $92. 00 charge for looking at it, tells me that the engine is gone and they can get me a great deal for $4,600. 00 (a used engine with 19,000 miles on it). Well in the mean time, my son had been researching this problem on line and found that there are many 2006-2007 Honda Civic owners having the same problem. He found Honda service bulletin 08-044 which states there is a mechanical defect in some of these engines. The bulletin also states that customers that are out of warranty when this happens may be eligible for goodwill consideration. I explained several employees of grainger Honda but their response was that they would need to take down the engine at a tune of about $500-$600. He said they might be willing to pick up 25% of the cost. I told him absolutely not. I told him this was a defect that Honda was very much aware of and that Honda should pay for the entire repair. I also contacted Honda of America and was told they would do nothing.

11 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/23/2010

I have 89,000 miles on my 2006 Honda Civic. The other day I was driving it to work and it overheated. When I popped the hood, I discovered that there wasn't any antifreeze in it. I have not noticed any leaking, and when I took it to the dealer, they said it was because it was leaking out a crack in the engine block. While my car is high mileage, it is also only four years old, so it shouldn't be having issues this serious so soon.

12 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/19/2010

My 2006 Honda Civic ex with only 35,000 miles started overheating. I took the car to my reliable mechanic who discovered a crack in the engine block. He told me to tow the car to the Honda repair shop as this was a fault with this particular year. Honda is covering the cost to repair. However, I will be without a car for 2 weeks and thy will not cover for a rental car. Shame on Honda. I will reconsider ever purchasing a Honda ever again.

13 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/23/2009

Honda Civic with 70,000 miles lost all anti freeze during a 20 minute drive resulting in a cracked engine block. Engine steamed. Car died pulling into parking lot.

14 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/22/2009

Began smelling anti-freeze one week ago, took cr to shop 3 days later, told their is a crack in the engine block. 2006 Civic, under 4 years old, but 68k miles, so dealer says it is out of warranty. As they have seen similar problems, their district manager approved them covering 50 % of the estimated cost of $3100 to replace the engine / block. While I appreciate their generosity, I would expect them to cover it 100 %, as this is a known problem on the r18 engine used in the 2006 Civic. That I was unlucky enough to have made it passed 60k miles before the crack appeared seem ironic. I suggest that Honda make good on a 90 / 10 replacement program, 90 % of the cost covered by american Honda. If this was some other brand with a lesser reputation for quality and reliability, I would not be so surprised, but the Honda name leads me to expect better.

15 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/16/2009

There is a big "engine block crack" with alot of 2006-2008 Honda Civics, many of the owners have already post their problems on many forums. Many owners took the car back to the Honda dealership and Honda did repair it for free. But !!! I still think the government should do an inspection on it and tell Honda to setup a recall on this problem. Honda will fix the problem only if its under the warranty, but what will happen if the car is not under warranty? and I still think Honda should fix it because it is a manufactures fault for using bad heating material on engine blocks. . 16 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/14/2009

I own a 2006 Honda Civic and over this past weekend I started to get the sweet smell of antifreeze and the engine started to overheat. I thought this was very odd because I am only at 82,000 miles. When my local Honda dealership inspected the car, they informed me that the engine block was cracked and that this is a design flaw in the 2006 and 2007 engines used in the Civic. I was very lucky not to have ended up stuck on the side of the highway during this frigid new england winter. If Honda knows about this flaw they should be doing something about it. I have an extended warranty, but the dealership has not agree to fix my vehicle yet. They've estimated the repairs to cost between $3,000 and $7,000. I am hopeful they will help me. From what I have been able to gather, many other Civic owners are dealing with the same problem of engine block cracks with low mileage on their vehicles.

17 Engine problem of the 2004 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/11/2009

I drive a 2004 manual Honda Civic. I was driving down the freeway with cruise control set at about 70 mph. Suddenly, I felt my car speed up substantially and when I look at the speedometer I was traveling over 85 mph. I immediately canceled cruise control but my car continued to gain speed. I hit my brakes which caused my car to shudder violently. When my foot wasn't on the brakes, my car continued to quickly gain speed. I attempted to move the car into neutral and coast to a stop, but when I put the clutch in my rpm's rose to about 8,000 and didn't go down even when the car was in neutral. The car also continued to increase in speed even when it was in neutral. I moved back into 5th gear and continued down the highway going between 85-95 mph. I was able to maintain that speed only with my foot on the brakes. I placed a call to 911 and informed them that I couldn't stop my car. The 911 dispatcher contacted highway patrol who set out to catch me. Once a highway patrolman was behind me, I was instructed to shift into neutral, even though the rpm's would shoot up, and coast to a stop. The car shook almost uncontrollably while I was slowing down and even at a complete stop in neutral on the side of the road the rpm's were at about 8,000. We had the car towed to the Honda dealership where they turned the car on and witnessed the rpm's immediately shoot up to 8,000 again. After looking under the hood they could not determine a cause for the incident. When they turned the car on again it started and ran normally. No significant damage to the car was done, and luckily the freeway was uncrowded so an accident was avoided.

22 Engine problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/29/2009

I have a 2007 Honda Civic. I have replaced 4 sets of tires on this car due to the back tires wearing flat. Honda reported it was a rear end problem and replaced parts. The car still makes too much road noise. No tires were replaced by Honda for this problem. In addition, my engine block is now cracked, and it happened without warning. 24 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/04/2009

I drive a 2006 Honda Civic, without warning, other than a burning smell a single day before, the remaining coolant sprayed out of the internal side of the engine block. Recognized as a porous block, manufacturing defect in the aluminum casting of the block. This was played off as not common but investigations online proof this is an issue not addressed by Honda. If I was in the desert on my way to la with my family, like we had planned a week after, it would have been a catastrophic failure the engine and disabled the car. I had to have the entire block and related parts replaced at a significant cost. This should be a recall for the initial model year for the Civic in 2005-2006. I should be compensated for the expense and this should be investigated.

25 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/11/2008

28 Engine problem of the 2001 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/07/2007

My 18 yr daughter was driving on a 4 lane interstate on a Friday in rush hour traffic. The average speed on this road at this time of day is 70-75mph . Suddenly and without warning her transmission failed. The car essentially went into neutral. Luckily she was able to maneuver the car to the shoulder. She could have easily been hit and more than likely this would have been a multicar accident. I contacted Honda and they said they only were aware of problems with the odyssey and accord manufactured approx. 1999-2002. I did some research and found there were numerous complaints with the Civic (our car is a 2001 Civic). How many complaints and near miss accidents will it take for Honda to be brought to task for this defect?.

29 Engine problem of the 2005 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/03/2007

I was traveling on a major highway when I noticed the engine revving high. I looked at the shifter and noticed I was in s so I pushed the shifter into drive and the car died right in the fast lane of an extremely busy highway. I looked in the rearview mirror and saw cars just swerving, screeching ,etc. I did get clipped on the right rear, not only was I very lucky, but I was fortunate none of the other vehicles wrecked into each other. I have read both on this link and edmunds of people having problems with these 2005 Honda Civic hybrids dying when put into drive. I still need to take it to Honda, but I need to take it to the body shop as it is not exactly drivable.

30 Engine problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Motor rpms hang between shifting when foot is taken off accelerator.

31 Engine problem of the 2005 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 09/16/2006

I was driving my 2005 Honda Civic home on a Saturday night when all of a sudden the car just went dead, I drifted to the shoulder of the road and sat for about 10 minutes, then I tried to start the car it started, about 4 miles down the road and the car went dead again, this happened 4 time in a matter of about 15 miles. 32 Engine problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/04/2006

The vehicle idled in my driveway for 1-2 minutes. I backed the vehicle down the driveway. I put my foot on the brake and shifted into drive. The vehicle unexpectedly revved up to 3-4000 rpm without pressing the accelerator. As my foot was firmly on the brake, the vehicle did not move. I took the vehicle to a dealership. The dealership checked the vehicle and test drove it. They could not find a problem or replicate the incident. No repairs were made to the vehicle.

33 Engine problem of the 2005 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/13/2006

While traveling down the highway I hit a deer head on. The deer destroyed much of my front end but the motor was still going . I applied the brakes and after about 15 seconds the car started to accelerate and couldn't be stopped. Since it was a hybrid it felt like the electric motor kicked in for some strange reason and the car couldn't be stopped. In order to stop the car I put it in to park while it was moving. The car continued to try and accelerate but since it was in park it was just moving slowly to a stop. Although this wasn't deadly for me it could have been if I wasn't on the highway or if I was knocked out. I don't think a car should accelerate for no reason.
