Honda Civic owners have reported 16 problems related to steering rack and pinion (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Civic based on all problems reported for the Civic.
Rack and pinion/ gear box repaired. Honda already had a recall on the gear box. According to dealership the part in question was not under recall warranty and not covered. I strongly feel this part should be included in recall. I feel either Honda or the dealership is trying to get around from repairing a faulty part when they already had a recall on another part for same issue.

The rack and pinion was failing. It caused problems with the steering causing unsafe driving conditions. I took the car to Honda and they said the rack and pinion was bad. I did contact Honda headquarters and they claimed there was nothing they could do about it since the car was out of warranty. I had this part replaced by an independent auto mechanic. They said the auto part store said they have been receiving orders for the rack and pinion at a rate of 5 per month. Considering how many parts store there are, this seem to be an unusual amount of a part failing. I have seen many complaints online about this part failing on Honda cars. This part should not fail especially at low milage. My car does have 65,000 miles on it, but the conditions started about 30,000 miles ago. I was unaware of what was happening back at the beginning, I knew something was wrong, but I didn't realize what, and it just got worse as time went on.

After being on the road for 30-40 minutes the steering becomes jerky and sticky. Feels like the car is trying to over correct when it shouldnt. I have my car in the dealer since last week where the service guys drove my car and and felt the problem, they submitted a claim under my extended warranty and now the warranty guy can't find a problem with my car and denied my claim. This is really unprofessional on Honda's part for not addressing this issue that we are all having. I swear I used to love driving my car, now I'm so scared to drive it that I can't enjoy it. Please investigate this because it is really unsafe. I think they want us to crash our cars rather fixing a simple issue and change the eps rack and pinion.

Rack and pinion steering went completely out on vehicle causing car to crash into guardrail of a bridge. Car was in motion about to cross bay bridge when this happened, safety of driver and other vehicles was compromised. Car wars trying to turn right heading toward the bridge when rack and pinion failed car was stopped by hitting guardrail about 45 miles an hour. Starter had to be replaced the very next month also problems with transmission. All of this has been repaired by owner. I don't feel this should happen as vehicle does not have excess mileage on it.

I have started to get a "check air bag system" warning light on my dashboard. It doesn't happen when I start the car, but occurs at some point while driving. The diagnosis is a bad steering wheel position sensor. The car has never been in an accident; there's no problem with the rack and pinion; and the air bag has never deployed.

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Civic. The contact stated that she owned a 2006 Honda Civic and had constant issues with the rack and pinion and power steering. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the entire part of the steering system containing the rack and pinion. A month and a half later, the failure recurred and she decided to trade the 2006 in for a 2008, in hopes that the failure would be resolved. Two months later, at 3,500 miles, the power steering was leaking just like the 2006 Honda Civic. The parts were replaced on the 2008. The dealer stated that there was a three week back order for this particular part that keeps failing. The failure mileage was 3,500. Updated 01/29/09. Updated 01/30/09.
Noticed a whining type sound on my 2006 Honda Civic sedan with 8275 miles. Power steering fluid was low by 4. 6 ounces, well below the intake hose for the system. Dealer informs me replacement of rack and pinion is necessary due to leak, fluid shoots out when pump is running. Warranty, no out of pocket cost. Loss of use while awaiting parts order, 4 days total loss.

- the contact was driving at about 10 mph when she heard a loud noise and the steering failed. She was able to stop the car without incident. The contact had the car towed to the Honda dealer (south motors Honda), and they told her that she had a rack and pinion failure. The contact said that she can have dealer save the part with the repaid order. The contact said that she had taken the car to service the steering because she felt a lot of play in the steering; she will also try to get the repair order for that as well.

: the contact stated while driving 35 mph on normal road conditions, the steering totally went out. There were no warning signals prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to the service dealer, who determine the rack and pinion bolts corroded due to the use of road salt in wisconsin.

For last 1-1/2 years (at mileage about 30000) steering wheel bcomes tight and gives click noise only when codl temp about 30. After driving say 1/2 hour and as the temp rises steering returns to normal. Ultimately risky to drive, steering assembly was replaced on 10/12/2000 for the cost of about s1000. 00. Per the Honda dealership such failures occurs around 100,000 mileage or more. American Honda consumer dept does not take responsibility for this manufacturing defect.
