37 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/14/2011

I have a 2009 Honda Civic. Heard horrible noise coming from tires. Had them rotated to see if that would fix problem. It just got louder so I took it into orangeville Honda for diagnostics. Was advised I had cupped tires and needed 4 new tires and an alignment. I replaced all four tires and had alignment done. On the alignment report was advised that the right rear camber and right front camber were out of specs, as well as the rear left camber is just in spec. Phoned Honda orangeville and told them of issue, was advised they do not repair such a thing and that driving on cupped tires is fine. I called Honda canada, spoke to james, ext. 6854, was advised it was a maintenance issue and that Honda orangeville would do a toe at my expense. I have since learned how much of an issue this is, in fact a class action suit has been filed in the states. I was also advised by Honda orangeville that the cupping resulted from the roads in which I live, which I find hard to believe as I live 5 minutes from the Honda plant in alliston. I was advised by my mechanic that the new tires will also cup unless this issue is dealt with. Honda claims to be about safety yet after research I have learned that driving on cupped tires is dangerous as the tires lose grip. Please help me I can't afford new tires every year or a $1,000. 00 repair bill on a car that is less than 2 years old.

38 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/24/2011

Broken belt with only 20k miles makes the tire susceptible to blow-out and unsafe to drive. Dealer says bridgestone attributes it to driver striking a hard object. So sad, this is the first broken belt I’ve had in my 40 years of driving.

39 Tire problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/18/2011

I installed 4 goodyear integrity tires on my 2003 Honda Civic hybrid. On 5/17/2011 I drove it on rain grooved concrete (us 287) and when it hit the grooved pavement, it went into a violent shimmy. There was a cross wind but the tires performed normally on smooth concrete, asphalt, and in the same cross wind on e-w and n-s highways. When I came to the rain grooves I was driving between 60-65 mph and I had to slow to less than 45 mph to have any secure control of the car. It felt like the steering column had come loose or the wheels were going wildly. The car lurched 1-2 inches laterally while on the rain grooved concrete. I had to check a box for which tire position but it was at all tire positions that the car was shimmying. This tire is definitely not a safe tire on rain-grooved concrete highways.

40 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/28/2011

I purchased a 2009 Honda Civic in July 2009 - manufactured 11/2008. Rotated tires every 5k mi. At 25k mi - June 2010, informed that tires needed to be replaced. Replaced all four tires with 40k mi rated tires, alignment performed and in Dec 2010 and rear tire were bald - 15k mi tot, 10 k on rear and 5 k on front. Replace these - all 4 - with 60 k mi rated tires and after 5 k mi rear tire were severly cupped. Replaced rear tires with the current front tires and 2 new tires for the front, alignment performed. Ran this set for another 5k mi and again the rear tires were severly cupped - 10 k total 5k on front and 5 k on rear. If there is any precipitation on the roadway what so ever, the rear end tends to lose traction. The mechanic (non-dealer) asked if I carry alot of weight around in the trunk and I said "no, 90% of the time I am the only one in the car". He did say that he had seen other makes of car that would "chew-up" tires quickly. I went home and did a search on the web for "excessive tire wear Honda Civic" and came up with a bunch hits that said there was a TSB for a control arm. I went to the dealer and asked if they have ever heard anyone else complain of excessive tire wear on a Civic and they said "no". So I told them that I found that there was a TSB for control arms on the web and they started researching 2009 Civic tsbs and said that there were none. I said that it seems very strange that many people are complaining about this problem and there are tsbs for 2007 and 2008 models but nothing for 2009 models. Dealer said since there is no TSB for the 2009 and since there are 50k mi on the car the warranty is expired - there is nothing they can do. They did offer to do an alignment for $75, I said "no thanks I'll resolve this by another means" and left.

41 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/05/2011

Unsafe handling. The rear of the car abnormally "darts" laterally when going over concrete expansion joints, potholes or similar road imperfections. This momentary "darting" - or inability of the rear suspension to track correctly - is more pronounced when cornering, especially at highway speeds. I experienced a spin-out (fortunately, no collision) on a wet road at 45-50mph due to overcorrecting for this "darting" condition. In conjunction with poor rear suspension handling, accelerated and excessive inner rear tire wear is experienced. Effectively shortening the lifespan of a 35,000 to 50,000 mile tire by at least half, if not more. It is even more excessive and accelerated if the tires are not rotated. After my spin-out, I started researching 2007 Civic handling / tire-wear on-line and it appears many, many 2006-2007 Civic owners have one or both of these conditions and that Honda is aware, but not willing to recall this unsafe rear upper control arm design/manufacturing flaw.

42 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/31/2010

Rear tires were making a humming noise while driving. Took car in to dealer and was told that the rear tires were cupped to the point of metal wires showing through. Vehicle only has 11890 miles on it.

43 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/30/2010

This vehicle was having a continuous roaring noise from the rear when the vehicle is being driven. Took to proctor Honda of tallahassee and mentioned the problem. Honda dealer noticed the rear tires were beginning to cup and rotated tires to address sound issue and blamed the tires as the malfunctioning part by recommending a tire replacement. At that time the tire toyo spectrums were only 1 year and 9 months old having being installed on 3/2009 , had a 65k tread life warranty. The 2006 and 2007 models of Honda Civic had technical service bulletins issued regarding the rear upper control arms causing uneven wear of rear tires (cupping) service bulletin number : 08-001 date of bulletin : Feb 08, 2008 ,NHTSA item number : 10024687. This Honda was purchased on 11/2007 and was obviously manufactured during the 2007 year. The proctor Honda mechanics believe that the rear upper control arms have already been replaced on this vehicle but I have no documentation revealing a date any such work was done. I have contacted the previous dealer hennessey Honda and the previous owner and neither have had these upper control arms replaced. Now in may 2012 these tires that were rotated with the tires on the vehicle that were not cupping in 2010 are now severely cupped ( high /low areas) while the front tires are not cupped at all from my inspection. Seems isolated to the rear of vehicle. The rear cupping occurs primarily on the inside part of the tire nearest to the vehicle but it is severe. This vehicle has already had the lower engine block replaced due to cracking coolant passages which I might emphasize that the 2007 Honda Civic also has issues with. This is my mom's vehicle and I want her to be safe driving this and do not want to keep buying new tires ( of a different brand) only to have them prematurely worn and cupping of tires caused as well. Please investigate this issue ????.

44 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Honda Civic. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph and encountered a small obstacle in the road. The contact drove to the side of the road and discovered the rear driver tire was completely flat. The rim was also destroyed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer the where they stated the rim exhibited a three to four inch gash throughout. The rim was replaced. The failure mileage was 20,000. Updated 1/19/2010 updated 01/27/11.

45 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

I purchased my 2009 Honda Civic on 09/09. I had my tires rotated every 6 to 8k. On my third rotation (at 24000) there was a humming sound occurring at low speeds. Took it to Honda dealer and was told that tires had uneven wear (cupping in a diagonal pattern) and needed new tires. According to dealer it is not Honda?s fault (never is!!!) , nothing wrong just normal wear. Unbelievable!!! normal!!! new tires plus alignment $600.

46 Tire problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 09/09/2010

The contact owns 2000 Honda Civic equipped with uniroyal tires size p205/55/r16 (n/a). While traveling 55 mph the contact noticed that the front passenger side tire had exploded without warning. The tire was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the failure was due to dry rot. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 4000.

47 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 09/02/2010

I also saw there is a TSB recall (Honda TSB 08-001) on the 2007 Civic but not on the si on replacing the rear arms. My 2007 Civic si has the same visible tire wear and tread cupping which would be fixed by the recall but my car is not included. The fix is a simple replacement of the rear chamber arms. I bought this car brand new and had it in on a recall for the 3rd gear. I'd like that same treatment and to be included on the recall to change my rear chamber arms. I'm annoyed that Honda will fix the problem on all the other trim lines but not the Civic si.

48 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

Purchased a 2009 Honda Civic ex coupe in August 2009. Had all maintenance done at dealer and according to the maintenance minder. When I took my Civic to have tires rotated and oil changed today, they stated that it needed new tires. I only have 21200 miles on the vehicle.

49 Tire problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/07/2010

Bridgestone tires 026325 insignia se200 bl p185/65r15 86/s 65,000 mile tires tore at 57,000 miles causing wheel to shake and almost have several accidents. I took car in to mechanic thinking I needed a balance and he took off my tires showing that 3 out of 4 them were tearing. These tires were manufactured in 2006 and should not be tearing by themselves. Mechanic said the wear on the tread and everything else was normal and tearing was not caused by any mechanical or vehicle malfunction. I contacted firestone and bridgestone and was not assisted. I was able to keep one tire and have it in my garage for evidence. These tires were purchased after I already had my vehicle and did not originally come with the vehicle.

50 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/03/2010

I own a 2006 Honda Civic. The rear tires are cupping (others call it see-saw pattern ). There is technical service bulletin for the lower control arm, dated February, 2008 that exactly describes the problem. The vehicle had three sets of new tires since it was purchased. First I thought it was a tire problem and I kept changing the tires, only to discover after the car was out of warranty, that it was a manufacturing defect. I contacted the manufacturer, and I spoke to crystal from american Honda motor who refused to offer any assistance, stating that it was my fault that " I did not give them the opportunity to fix the car" . The service bulletin was not communicated to me, I found out through my research, but in the meantime the warranty expired.

51 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

Excessive tire wear and loud noise from rear of vehicle. We have replaced two sets of tires, once at 11,000 miles and at 36,000 miles and they are again worn at 58,461 miles. We learned of a service bulletin, service bulletin number : 08-001 date of bulletin : Feb 08, 2008, issued by Honda and after much complaining since we were a few hundred miles past the 3 year 36,000 mile mark the dealer made the repairs and aligned the car. We have rotated the tires regularly and the loud noise is back as well as excessive tire wear. I find it ridiculous to have to replace tires like this because the tire warranty is void because the tread in one section is beyond the limit for replacement. The Honda dealer is claiming we have not rotated the tires enough/properly which seems to be a common excuse for others complaining about the problem to Honda.

52 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/02/2010

I have a 2008 Honda Civic ex-l. The car currently has 23,700 miles on it. I have been hearing a loud vibration noise on the back of the car for sometime now and after I just had my tires rotated, I have found that the back tires have flat spots on them. I have done some research and have found that many many other consumers are having this same complaint and have had no luck with Honda in fixing the problem. From what I have researched it is because of the control arm that is making the tires wear out fast. I have contact the dealer and they state they are unaware of any such problem, which I find very hard to believe. Some people have went to other dealers and were told that Honda didn't feel this was a big enough problem for a recall. Well if that is the case then why don't they fix these cars> are they waiting for deaths to occur from faulty tires? I want my car fixed it is unfortunate, but I still owe 17000 on it and I don't want to just throw that money out the window if I have to be buying tires every few months.

53 Tire problem of the 2010 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/12/2010

Brand new 2010 Honda Civic lx. Has 320 miles on it and already car pulls to the right and has vibration at 45 mph and above. Rear tires showing early signs of uneven treadwear. I thought this problem was covered and resolved on previous model years. Apparently it has continued to the 2010 model. I have read another customer has the same problem on a 2010 on edmunds. Com. Will be going to dealer tomorrow and have them fix to spec and the previously issued TSB 08-001. Not impressed with dealer prep of the car as they should have caught it.

54 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

I have a Honda Civic 2007 and I am experiencing premature tire wear on the vehicle. The original tires only got 18,000 miles. The next set of tires were warrantied for 65,000 miles and I got 20,000 miles on them. The next set was 60,000 mile tires and are almost worn out and will need replacing after 22,000 miles. I took the car to my local Honda dealer before the warranty expired and told them of my problem. They said nothing was wrong with the car. What can I do? I am replacing the tires every year.

55 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Civic equipped with bridgestone all season 89h tires, size p205/55/r16. The contact stated that after having regular maintenance performed the mechanic advised him that all four tires were bald. He was advised that it was unusual for tires to bald at such low mileage. The vehicle was repaired for four new tires. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 17,500. The VIN was unavailable.

56 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

I purchased a new 2009 Honda Civic and at 12,000 the tire belts have slipped.

57 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/24/2010

2006 Honda Civic handles terrible in any weather conditions. I have approximately 60,000 miles on my vehicle and have just purchased my fouth set of tires. Honda had a service bulletin to fix upper control arms on the rear end. Which was nearly impossable to discover, and most Honda owners probably are not aware of this. However even after I had this part fixed my tires have still worn out as quickly and unevenly as ever. Most americans can not afford to replace tires every 20,000 miles and Honda continues to state that it is a tire issue and not there problem. I have had different brands of tires on my vehicle and the same thing continues to happen.

58 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

Premature tire wearout - extreme shake, especially ay highway speeds. Dealer said nothing is wrong, even though they asked me if it was shaking/vibrating. Tires will not pass inspection & need to be replaced. (they were actually worn at 20k) car handles horrible in inclement weather. Based on other complaints, I expect this to be an issue every 20k until Honda steps up and admits they have a rear suspension issue with the '08s.

59 Tire problem of the 2010 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/26/2010

I have a car with only 1800 miles and is 45 days old. I was driving and it seems that I had a flat. I pulled over and stopped the car and found that both front tires were completely bald and torn up. Honda is saying that the suspension has gone bad and it is probably because of me hitting a pothole or snow. This explanation does not make any sense as the damage to the tires and alleged damage to the suspension is too severe for me not to have noticed it.

60 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/25/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Civic. The vehicle was equipped with bridgestone turanza el400 tires, and tire size 205/55/16h(na). The contact was driving down an incline, approximately 35 mph. The road surface was dry. There was a loud thumping noise coming from the rear tires. The vehicle began to shake violently and slide. The authorized dealer was notified of the failures. The technician stated that the tires required replacement with an alignment. The vehicle has not been repaired nor have the tires been replaced. The failure mileage was 27,000. The current mileage was 27,215. Updated 05/12/10 updated 05/14/10.

61 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/23/2010

I purchased my Honda Civic on 12/31/08. On or around the beginning of may 2009, I had my tires rotated at 9532 miles. On may 22, 2009 at 9595 miles, I had them computer balanced and rotated again. There was a thumping noise that was occurring whenever I tried to stop. Had a tire replaced due to unsuccessful repair of flat (at 10,515 miles). At 11,016 miles, I was back at Honda again. Had to have a second tire replaced due to tread wear and warping. Both of these tires had initially been on the rear axle of the car when it was purchased. In July of 2009, at 14652 miles, I had tires rotated again. Two new front tires went to back axle. On 12/22/09, went to have tires rotated and balanced again due to rough riding (mileage 25148). Had to have two new tires (replaced by Honda) replaced again. Tires were on the rear axle, and were worn completely smooth after only ~14,500 miles. Again, on February 23, 2010, went to have tires rotated again (mileage 29834). Back two tires were worn completely smooth again. Goodyear tire company put this quote on my receipt, "no rotation due to tire wear in the rear. Rear tires are at 2/32. " on February 25, I took the Honda Civic to the nearest Honda dealer (round rock, TX ~ 58 miles away). Had called ahead and made appointment, telling the service manager what the problem was. He called me at 12:45 and told me that they had put the car on the alignment rack and the car was not out of alignment, and that this was just natural tread wear due to my "driving". After getting home this evening, I began researching the bridgestone turanza el400 tires online. There are numerous consumer complaints for the same exact problem that I am having. I find it quite odd that Honda says no one else has complained, but there are so many complaints posted online about these same tires. I find them to be a safety hazard. I have to drive under 55 mph if it is raining. If I do not, my car hydroplanes all over the road. This is a hazard.

62 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/08/2010

I own a 2006 Honda Civic. The winter of 2007-2008 the car would fishtail almost uncontrollably on snow and ice - not a snow or ice storm necessarily, but really whenever there was snow cover or ice on the roads. We changed tires - twice. The winter of 2008-2009, we were still having the same problem. This time, the dealership suggested an alignment. We had that done, but the tech's who did the alignment would not rotate our tires because they said our tires were bald. We discovered that the tires were not bald on the outside edge, only on the inside. We entered the winter of 2009-2010 with the same problem - took it once again to the lithia Honda dealership in ames, IA. We read internet anecdotal evidence blaming the rear sway bar. The technicians checked it and the rear shocks but didn't discover anything wrong. Lithia's service dept refused to do anything else because they could not be assured they would be reimbursed for their costs. Lithia of ames did not contact the national manufacturer, american Honda, until we asked them to. We did more research. One man in british columbia had posted about his car having the exact same problem as ours - complete with many of the same words used to describe the problem as we had used and that technicians had determined it was the control arm. The control arm is too short. We asked them to contact american Honda - the control arm has a bulletin - but only for uneven tread wear. My family and I - our friends, even - are afraid to drive in this car. We cannot take it over 35-40 miles an hour even when it's sunny outside because snow cover will cause it to have this problem. The car doesn't track straight when traversing bumpy roads. On a trip down south last winter, the car hit a small patch of ice and felt like we were going into the ditch. We are going to continue to see problems with the uneven tire wear. The american Honda representative , said, our rear alignment is the worst she's ever seen. Please help!!.

63 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

Uneven and rapid rear tire wear in the 2007 Honda Civic lx sedan 5 speed automatic. The uneven and rapid tire wear is accompanied by constant loud roaring noise from the rear while the vehicle is in motion and vibration at highway speed. Maintenance has been performed regularly I paid the local Honda dealership to complete wheel and tire alignment, balance, and rotation every 5000 miles when I take the car for a oil-change, yet I already replaced 2 sets of tires at 43000 miles once at 19000 miles and another one at 39000 miles. The tires I used were goodyear eagle rsa p/n 42751-gyr-036 h/g 8270498 p205/55r16. This is a safety concern for most drivers since regular drivers do not anticipate tire balding every 20000 miles and perhaps the drivers are unaware of driving on bald tires. The local Honda dealership diagnosed the problem as a rear upper control arm issue but refused to cover the cost of the repair. This premature wire wearing is clearly a Honda defect and a safety concern.

64 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/25/2009

Purchased a 2008 Honda Civic from local dealer new. This vehicle had alot of road noise for the get go. . But saw online that road noise was one of the problems with Honda's. Had my car regularly serviced at the same dealership over the last year. Last month Dec 2009 road noise became excessive and took car into dealership. They looked the car over and said tires had excessive wear because I had not rotated them every 5000 miles. Car is a year old has 20000 miles and has had road noise all along. Dealer refused to replace tires and denied problem. Car now has nearly 30,000 miles and is undrivable at this point. Haven't replaced tires as it is not affordable. But car is unsafe to drive. Dealer said suspension problems noted in 2006-07 models has been fixed, but problem seems rampant in the 2008 if you look on the internet as well as safety reports yet nothing has been recalled, and Honda is not standing by their product. Now I am still paying for a car that sits in the driveway and is unsafe to drive. . . Cant sell an unsafe vehicle. . Please investigate this problem.

65 Tire problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/13/2009

The contact owns a 2009 Honda Civic. While driving 20 mph the vehicle began vibrating in the rear. The contact noticed that there was cupping in the tire tread which caused the vehicle to vibrate. A local tire shop replaced the rear tire. The dealer checked the entire rear-end of the vehicle for damage; however, nothing was broken. The dealer requested that a manufacturers representative inspect the vehicle; yet, this has not occurred. The contact had the identical failure on a 2006 Civic and the dealer stated that failure was caused by a loose bushing which caused unusual tire wear. The contact stated that this is a major manufacturers defect. The current mileage was 16,000 and the failure mileage was 15,000.

66 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/07/2009

I have a 2007 Honda Civic lx. Today I took it to meinike to get my oil change and tires rotated. There was no tread left on the inner tires. I've rotated my tires every 6k miles and now I'm at 28k miles. The mechanic said I don't even know how you made it here. He didn't want to put them back on because their worn to the core. There is also no tread left. I didn't even know, but when I did a google search I found there was a recall on it. Honda said they wouldn't pay to have the tires fixed from their defect.

67 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 09/25/2009

I have a 2008 Honda Civic coupe. After 15,000 miles the rear tires had to be replaced due to a loud rumbling noise that the mechanic said was separated belts. I have read other complaints on this issue and the outcome was Honda pointing fingers at bridgestone and vice-versa. Do I have any recourse with the car company or tire manufacturer?.

68 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 09/08/2009

Popping noise while turning at 5,268 miles. Replaced two tires at 19,785 miles. Need a front end axle replacement at 31,839. Diagnosed and adjusted torqued rear suspension noise at 60,136. Replaced rear upper control arms 61,275. Replaced shocks, and cv boots at 61,275. Struts were making noise due to cupping. Struts were replaced at 61,275. Two new tires that were recently replaced were replaced again. Both tires were feathered and making noise. Vehicle is maintained in good condition and is following the manufacturer's maintenance recommendation. Car was aligned as required by manufacturer. However, cupping or feathering of the tires still happened. When the rear control arm was not replaced yet, the rear noise was so loud and driving was bad. The tires felt flat and the shock absorber did not seem to be working. It is very hard to deal with both Honda America and kolbe dealer. Both companies tried to play ignorant of the issues although they knew it all along. I spent $1,419. 11 for premature expenses. American Honda blamed the premature damages to me. American Honda nor kolbe Honda did not notify me of the technical bulletins that were issued. Also, just because there is a technical bulletin or corrective action does not mean that the problem will go away. Design of the rear upper control arm must be reviewed again and tested for geometry with other parts of the vehicle. Honda America should tightened its quality control and quality assurance so that its manufacturing facility will not release cars that have defective parts. Honda knew very well that the rear upper control arms have design flawed starting with 2002 Honda Civic. Why are they still using this design? is it because they manufactured so much of the wrong parts?.

My 2007 Honda Civic si appears to wear out rear tires faster than front tires. The car is front wheel drive. Rear tires become worn uneven and get bumps on them, this causes my car to shake and vibrate very bad, also makes it hard to drive in the rain. Appears lots of other peopole have had the same problem.
