3 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2011

The 4-speed automatic transmission in 2000 Honda Odyssey models had serious problems with transmission durability. Honda spokesman mike spencer stated that four-speed models were afflicted with a bad bearing that could break apart, scattering fragments of metal that clogged fluid passageways in the transmission, causing it to shift erratically. [11] Honda responded to the problems by extending the warranty on the transmission on u. S. A. '99-'01 models to 7 years or 100,000 miles (160,900 km). A class action settlement further extended coverage to 109,000 miles (175,400 km) or 93 months for some '99-'01 Odysseys in the u. S. A. [12] canada is not included. The five-speed automatic was first installed in Odyssey in the 2002 model, but general reliability of the transmission did not improve until 2004 according to consumer reports. Mike spencer, a spokesman for Acura, said that the five-speed models typically were damaged by premature wear of the third-gear clutch pack. As the clutch friction material abraded, it scattered bits inside the transmission case, clogging fluid lines and causing erratic shifting. Drivers might suffer slipping, poor or no shifts, or sudden down-shifts from 5th gear to 2nd gear.

Failure Date: 01/06/2011

I have a check engine light for p0401 code for clogged ege system and p1739 for the transmission code my transmission was already replaced this is the 2nd transmission from Honda. On August 2010 my check engine light came on I took the car to pep boys. They pulled up the 2 codes p0401 and p1739 for clogged egr system and transmission code. I replaced the egr valve and still the same code came up. My car is now out of warranty and there is a service bulletin that has to be performed to unclogg the egr system that is to Honda bulletin 00-009 to drill a hole in the manifold and install a pipe. This should have been done under waaranty it is a known defect. The transmission is also bad a gain because it has the p1739 code. I want bothof these fixed under the warranty.

The transmission was replaced at around 60k and now at 170k miles the transmission needs to be replaced again. I have had the transmission serviced every 25k, one at 120k and another at 145k. Honda should replace the transmission for free, two failed transmissions in 170k miles in unacceptable!.

My Honda 2000 Odyssey has had two transmission go out. Once in 2005 (covered by warranty and now 2010 ( not covered by warranty). 17 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2009

Had transmission completely replaced on 2007 because it had gone south. Now 2 years later the replacement is doing the exact same thing. They offered 50% as apparently the "new" transmission had all of a one year warranty on it. The original replacement was no charge, but says nothing at all about warranty on the paperwork. Only when we took it back to the dealer did we find out apparently it was a one year warranty. The guy at the service counter told me "if a customer pays any money for the replacement, it is a 3 year/36000 mile warrant. If it's free, it's a one year warranty". Talked to the 800-999-1009 number and the phone rep, while polite, was defensive and avoided Honda taking any responsibility for the problem. Said 50% was "more than fair" and "above and beyond their responsibility", even though this was a new transmission that had crapped out after just 2 years.

18 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2009

The contact owns a 2000 Honda Odyssey. The transmission would not shift into the second gear. The transmission was repaired in April of 2005 for an identical failure. 19 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2009

I drive a 2000 Honda Odyssey ex. It has 79,000 mi on it. It jogs when I put it into reverse from drive. And it slips when driving , from 1st gear going into 2nd. And jogs when pushing accelerator. It is dangerous because it will slip when driving down highway. The dealer will not look into, without charging outrageous amount because our warranty is lng over. We had a local mechanic do work , but problem is not solved. Honda is having many problems with transmissions, we should not be having any problems at only 79,000 miles.

20 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2009

2000 Honda Odyssey transmission defective.

21 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2009

I have a problem with Honda Odyssey transmission, then took it to the dealer to be replace and they said that I have to pay out of pocket. I believe that there are many people out there have the same problem as I do. I feel it is not safe for me while I am driving, especially I use freeways and highways up to 95%. Think about what happen to the transmission when it starts breaking apart and fell of on the highways or freeways. . . That is a really big problem.

22 Automatic Transmission problem

Check engine light came on. According to dealer it is a transmission problem with the Honda Odyssey. Odysseys from the years 1999-2001 have had problems with the transmission and have been recalled. Symptoms: d4 light dims. Delayed engagement of gears. Harsh shifting. Have the car in shop now.

23 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2008

Honda Odyssey transmission went out while driving down the road , had to stop and pull off road to get help getting it home. Now in researching the issues at hand I see there is a major problem with Honda trannys. Why cant they find a solution and save everyone some time and money.

24 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

I own a 2000 Honda Odyssey. I am sure you are familiar with their known transmission issues. Honda is well aware of this problem, and without a recall, decided to simply extend the warranty from 5yrs to 7yrs, knowing that most people would run into problems after the 7yr mark, my engine light came on at the 6yr mark. I have always taken the vehicle to the Honda dealership for service. As the engine light was on, I was told to just ignore it, as it must have come on after filling up gas, and not to worry, as it will go off automatically. Finally I told them to check the codes, and now they tell me it needs a new transmission, but to continue driving it, as just because the light is on, the transmission is not "dead" and to continue driving until I notice any problems. Well, after a 4hr road trip, the engine light and tcs light came on, and I didn't realize the extent of the problem, until I stopped and had to make a lt hand turn. As I stepped on the gas to enter the intersection, the van hesitated, and then jerked forward. Had the delay been any longer, my family and myself would have been in a serious accident. I replaced the transmission at Honda, and now 18months later, it needs to be replaced again. Honda is well aware of this transmission issue, and should be responsible for repairing this problem once and for all. Why keep replacing a transmission knowing it will only last another under 2yrs. My only option is to sell this van, but it's not fare to the next unfortunate person. This is a serious safety hazard.

25 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

Purchased a used 2000 Honda Odyssey in 2005; at the time of purchase the veh was still under limited manufactures warranty. Very well aware of the transmission recall. We are now going on our 4th transmission replacement since the purchase. The last replacement was in February 2008; they made me fight for a warranty on that refurbished / replacement transmission 3 year or 36,000 miles. Well this one barely lasted 12,000 miles and I am completely fed up. My wife transports my remaining 4 school aged children around. This vehicle has stalled on numerous times in busy traffic, and this time around I will not except a refurbished or rebuilt or used tranny. I will fight for a new one, or a complete refund of the money spent!.

26 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2008

While I was driving on I-i0 with my children my 2000 Honda Odyssey started jerking and jumping whenever I had to excel. Finally it came to an jerking stop I had to move my car out of the way of traffic and did not snow what to do I am scared to death of being hit when finally my 17 year old son jumps up and puts my car into park and back into drive and slowly jerked it of the highway.

27 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

I purchased an used 2000 Honda Odyssey (62000 miles) from drexel hill Honda ( PA) on 08/11/2008 it has transmission problem on 09/01/2008. I just got my car less than a month, and putted on 500 miles on it. Took it to Honda dealer, found dtc p0740: tc failure dtc p0730: incorrect gear ratio they advised to replace automatic-transmission. But american Honda don't replace their failed transmission for free. They offer me 50-50. I don't want to pay $1200 for their bad transmission.

28 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2008

2000 Odyssey, fully serviced by dealer since purchase. Recently transmission started giving a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd and also got a check engine sign. Took it to the dealer and was told that the catalytic converter need to be replaced and the transmission needs to be replaced as well. I had purchased an extended warranty (100,000 miles) from Honda at the time of purchase. Later the transmission warranty was extended to 109,000 from their standard warranty. My car has 141,000 miles. I called american Honda -- but they are not willing to do anything even when they know that this model year has problems and there was already an extended warranty in place. I think Honda quality and service are going down.

29 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

Purchased Honda Odyssey new in late summer/fall of 2000. Vehicle downshifted hard while braking since new. Thought it was how the vehicle operated. I got a postcard in the mail a few years ago stating Honda was going to extend the warranty on the transmission because of a potential problem. I currently have 136,000 miles on the van. The check engine light came on 2 weeks ago. I took it to the garage to have inspection done & to figure out why the light came on. The check engine light came on about 3-4 years ago and Honda said it was the catalytic converter and the dealer (piazza Honda of reading, PA) replaced it for free. When I went to pick up the van from the inspection and the garage would not pass the inspection. The error code that came up was "po740" and they said the transmission would need to be replaced, but I should take it to the dealer to verify. I took the van from the garage to the dealer and gave them the receipt from my inspection (which had the error code on it). The service guy took the receipt with him into the garage bay, talked to the manager and came back out. He told me I need a new transmission and it would cost me $2500-$4500 to replace it. I asked him if they were doing any "goodwill" with the on going transmission issue and he said no. I also asked specifically if they would split the cost and he said no. I have had the van serviced several time at that specific Honda dealer and nothing was ever said to me about the transmission issue. Honda expects me to pay for a new transmission on a known defect in their product.

32 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2007

I have purchased a 2000 Honda Odyssey from willis Honda on 10/26/2007 when I went home to register my car on the Honda website. The owners page said there was an extended warranty for the transmission. That ws still open. I have noticed delayed shifting. And yesterday when driving on the highway there was a loud bang coming from the back of the car? the car I have bought was the dealers service car. The transmission should have been repaired while it was under warranty now the warranty just about expired 7 years or 100,000 miles and it is just about 100,000 miles. Please fix. Thank you.

33 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Honda Odyssey. While driving 20-40 mph, the dashboard light would illuminate intermittently. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. Approximately three months later while driving 30-40 mph the vehicle would hesitate then fail to accelerate when he depressed the accelerator pedal. The dealer stated that the egr valve caused the failure and made the replacement however, the failure continued to occur. The dealer then stated that the transmission caused the failure and recommended a transmission replacement. As of January 3, 2008, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. There is a recall for the power train: automatic transmission (NHTSA campaign id #04v176000) however, the dealer stated that his VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 74,169 and current mileage was 84,126.

34 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2006

The contact owns a 2000 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the check engine warning light illuminated intermittently. The dealer advised the contact that by refueling the vehicle, it could have triggered the light to illuminate. Later, the vehicle began to show signs of abnormal violent jerking. The vehicle was later taken in for diagnostic testing where she was informed that the transmission, catalytic converter, stabilizer and links, front motor mount, right side motor mount, and alignment all needed repairs. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The current mileage was 116,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

35 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2005

Just came to a stop and pushed the gas pedal to go and it was in reverse. The vehicle had 98,000 miles on it. Vehicle did not hit anything. This happened on September 9, 2005. On September 8, 2005 put the vehicle in drive and on the freeway noticed it was in third gear. Have not contacted the dealer yet.
