38 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

My 2003 Honda Odyssey started experiencing transmission problems in August 2010 at around 62,000 miles. Most of the problems were observed when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Due to the unpredictability in shifting, it creates a hazardous situation when merging into traffic.

39 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated the vehicle would sporadically hesitate to accelerate when driving at various speeds. The contact also stated that when shifting into reverse, there was a lengthy delay before the vehicle would register and engage in reverse. The dealer advised that the transmission would need to be replaced. The manufacturer did not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 108,000.

40 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

My 2003 Honda Odyssey transmission died at 93000 miles. I spend $2500 to have it rebuilt. I want Honda to pay for it since they have a defective transmission based on the numerous complaints I read on the subject.

41 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2010

I have owned my 2003 Honda Odyssey for 4 years and never had a major problem till now. I had just gotten off the interstate and suddenly my van acted like I had slammed on the brakes and jerked me really hard. Thankfully no one was behind me or could have been serious wreck. My transmission light came on and I had it towed to Honda dealership. Even though this is a highly known problem with the 2003 Honda Odyssey, I was told by the dealership Honda would do nothing to help with the $3300 I had to pay for a new transmission. I was 8 months pregnant at the time and just so thankful that it didn't cause a serious wreck like it could have. Honda should have to fix this problem with the transmissions before someone gets really hurt or looses a life!!.

42 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2010

Transmission light came on and vehicle jerked really hard then suddenly began to loose and gain in speed. Afraid to drive it with my four children. Car was towed to Honda care service center where they quoted 4600 dollars to replace transmission. Noticed many complaints about same problem and wanted to make sure my voice is heard!.

43 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2010

We should be at kings island right now as I speak. My whole family was on the way there when about 25 minutes into the ride-our check engine light came on. A few minutes later-the tcs light on the dash came on! all of a sudden the thing started jerking like a bull and the rpm's revved up and we lost power & it kept jerking -scared us to death!! we were on the highway with the cruise on. We bought this 2003 Honda from a dealer with 10 miles on it and it's only got 91,000 now! I can't believe this happened. The whole reason we paid $30,000 for a van was because it was a Honda! anyway, we got off the next exit to a truck stop to get some transmission fluid but they didn't have any. The engine was all wet under the hood and the transmission fluid was low but we had no choice to turn around, cancel our kings island fun day, and head home (hoping and praying that we would make it)! we got back on the highway and I called our Honda dealer service department and explained to a tech. What happened and he basically said to pull over - call a tow truck and bring it in so they could look at it! that's it! that's all he said! no - let me call a tow truck for you and bring you a rental-nothing! we couldn't do that-6 of us can't fit in a tow truck! anyway, we started to head back only doing about 50 cuz of the rpm's-we had the flashers on and made it down the road to the next exit and my husband bought some transmission fluid. We then ever so carefully made it back home where it now sits in our driveway-I am very sad cuz it was my baby and now we have a major dilemma. We had decided to trade it in on another vehicle yesterday (before any of this happened!) but by the time we got everything done-the banks were closed. Our salesman knew about kings island and is awaiting us to come back out to trade. Now what? this will cost us thousands on our trade - if they still take it! OH-I forgot to mention the "d" for drive light started flashing and we lost our reverse gear too!! help!!!.

44 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2010

I was driving my 2003 Honda Odyssey 65 mph on expressway and van started smoking from underneath the car. I quickly pulled over and the smoke increased. We thought the van was on fire! I emptied my children from the car onto the side of the road (extremely unsafe!) the fire department and police came. Fluid puddle was under car and fluid was all over under the hood and under the car. Said to be from the transmission. All my fluid levels were full according to dip sticks. I had to wait (alone with my kids) on the side of the road for an hour and a half (90 degree, humid day, with no water) to be picked up by aaa and towed home (80 miles) my gauges gave me no warning. My car is kept in perfect maintenance condition. I had the trans replaced in recall with a rebuilt from Honda a few years back. This was a scary and dangerous event for us and I am very sad to hear that Honda will do nothing to fix this problem for me. I am now in fear whenever I am in my van that it could happen again.

45 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2010

The transmission in our 2003 Honda Odyssey. Severely jerks and losses power while driving at all speeds.

46 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2010

This week my 03 Honda Odyssey's transmission is getting worse and I can not longer shift to d3 or any other gear below d. I took it to aamco and it's going to cost $1800 to check it out. Replacing it will be over $3k. I call Honda America and they told me that they are not going to do anything because it's over the warranty limit. My is now not drivable because the transmission is out. I did not take it to the dealership because they told me it will cost $90 just for them to look at it. So I took it to aamco transmission they only charge $59 to look at it. The car has paint recall and transmission recall which had already been done. They repainted the upper half of the car and replaced a transmission cooler on the car. Now they told me that because they already replaced the transmission cooler, they are not going do anymore repair to the transmission so now I'm out of luck. Can anyone help me? I think that Honda motor should fix my transmission because it's a material defect.

47 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

I bought a 2003 Honda Odyssey from koons Honda dealer in manassas,va in 2006 it was used car. I took extended warranty from Honda and it expired 2009 November. I have been doing regular maintenance on that van as recommended by Honda at that dealership , I got malfunction indicator lamp on my van and took to dealership today and they said there may be an issue with my transmission and just the parts may cost $3500 and then labor on that. I need american Honda to pay for this as eventhough I performed regular maintenance on that vehicle and I got transmission problem which is really unsafe to drive.

48 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) Honda Odyssey late 2003 model - flashing d light and unable to shift transmission into d3. The mileage on this vehicle is less than 90k and has been very well maintained. This is not acceptable - vehicle VIN [xxx] - Honda web site is stating that this is not covered by the transmission recall.

49 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2010

At 74,000 my Honda Odyssey's transmission needed to be replaced. I had purchased this vehicle in 2007 as a certified Honda vehicle at a florida Honda dealership. We had then move to massachusetts where I began taking my van to another Honda dealership close by. It was there at the end of 2008 I brought the vehicle complaining that it seemed jumpy, especially when put in reverse. I told them I was concerned it was the transmission. This was all while my car was still covered under its warranty. They assured me that my Odyssey was fine. Then in the beginning of 2010when you pushed on the gas the van seemed to not accelerate and my engine and tcs light came on. At the time we did not have the money to do any repairs so we stopped driving the vehicle for a few months. Then in April I took the van to a local garage who informed me the transmission needed to be replaced. I was in shock because in November of 2008 I had complained that I thought something was wrong with my transmission and was told nothing was found. I opened a case with american Honda who offered to pay $2000 of the repairs. I of course asked for more but they refused. I ended up having to pay out $2600 to replace the transmission and replace the timing belt. I have since seen on the computer all the problems that Honda has had with transmissions and am astonished that they are not being held accountable for poor quality automobiles. So much for buying a vehicle to last for our growing family. I am begging for someone to investigate and hold Honda accountable for faulty and poor quality transmissions. It is quite apparent that the transmissions on the 1999-2004 Odyssey's and maybe more are not large enough or strong enough to carry the load of a Mini-van. They were faulty from the beginning and it is unfair to leave us vehicle owners holding the bag. I have also had the mounting bracket for the alternator replaced 3 times and had the mounting bolt broken off in the engine block. That was all covered.

50 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph when the vehicle stalled after she depressed the accelerator pedal at a traffic light. The vehicle lost all power and would not move forward. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where she was informed that the vehicle needed a new transmission. She called the manufacturer who stated that they would replace the transmission and pay 50% of the repair costs. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 82,650.

51 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2010

When I was proceeding at about 60 miles/hour on the high way with my 2003 Honda Odyssey, the transmission suddenly locked up periodically. We were almost getting into two accidents in a couple minutes. Finally, the transmission was gone. Now dealer is asking about $5000 dolars to replace it. However, it was happened because of manufacturer error since this car was recalled for the transmission issue.

52 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, there was a sudden and abnormal increase in engine rpms before returning to normal. The rpms began to rapidly fluctuate intermittently. The dealer advised that the transmission would need to be replaced at the contact's expense. There were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer agreed to provide partial assistance for the cost of repairs. The vehicle was left with the dealer, but had not yet been repaired. The failure and current mileages were approximately 122,000.

53 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

Transmission needs to be replaced.

54 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2010

I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey. I was entering the highway from the on-ramp. The car failed to shift at around 38 mph. The engine revved to the red line but, the car didn't accelerate. I almost got into an accident. I took the car to the dealership recommended by the guy who has serviced my three previous Hondas. The dealership fails to acknowledge there is an issue because they couldn't replicate it during a 30 min test drive. After reading the other complaints, I am convinced I have the same issue. I am hoping and praying that I am lucky enough to not get into an accident when this problem appears regularly. The problem started couple of weeks ago and it has continued to happen a couple of times each day. I just don't know the exact condition it recurs.

55 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2010

Transmission revs then bangs into gear.

56 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

Transmission started revving in between 2nd and 3rd gear. Next day tried driving it to transmission shop and it started slipping between 1st and 2nd gear. Car has difficulty making it over 40 mph. These defects occurred all within the same week. No other issues had occurred before this event. Shop said transmission fluid appears burned. Transmission has to be replaced to fix problem.

57 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

The transmission of my 2003 Honda Odyssey has failed after 130000 miles. It slips getting into and out of 3rd gear, and there is debris in the fluid, indicating that clutch disks are degrading and getting into the hydraulic controls. Meticulously maintained and driven gently and primarily on long trips. On more than a few occasions, the slippage happened as my learning-to-drive daughter was pulling into traffic from a stop sign on a busy road, only to have the engine rev way up while not moving and drifting into the path of crossing traffic. It is now sitting in my driveway undriveable.

58 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2010

Nhtsa campaign id number: 04v176000 was recall/repair for transmission. Caused delay in total failure of transmission. 2003 Honda Odyssey with 90k miles. Last night out of blue starts to rev when pulling out into traffic. Almost killed, as sudden failure caused van to have no power when needed to pull out. Really needs to be addressed!.

59 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

My 2003 Honda Odyssey transmission gave out after only 77,000 miles. My research has shown thousands of customers are having or have had the same problem with their Odysseys from 1999-2004. Honda settled a class action lawsuit covering from 1999-2001. These transmissions are apparently all defective. Honda refuses to replace these dangerous transmissions for free like they should.

60 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2010

2003 Honda Odyssey nothing wrong with the car. Driving home about 40mph, slowed to about 20 to cross a street that is crowned. Started to accelerate, the engine just revved. Coasted to the side about 100 yards ahead to get off the street into a parking lot. Car started working again, proceeded home. Had to stop 2 other times to get back home. Checked the web and there are hundreds of other complaints. Called a reputable transmission service, told me that the entire 2009 year was filled with Hondas coming in! in fact, he had an identical Honda Odyssey there when I got there. This is a giant safety problem! I cannot imagine being in the left 5th lane doing 70 and having this happen- or a lock up! from what I have read on the net, it seems Honda does not want to address the issue. This is my second Honda. My first went 248k miles w/o any major issue whatsoever! that is why I bought another. This is truly a bad safety issue.

61 Automatic Transmission problem

66 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2009

Problem with transmission on 2003 Honda Odyssey at high speeds: when accelerating from speeds of 40 mph to 55 mph, the vehicle lurches suddenly, and it feels as if it were shifting into 1st gear. History: on November 7, 2009, the engine light came while driving on a highway. Our auto mechanic checked the code (po740) and found that it was a problem with the lockup control system (transmission). Road test didn't reveal any problems. The mechanic froze the data/cleared the code to see if engine light would come back on. It did not. However, we subsequently experienced the lurching of gears while driving on the highway at high speed: November 29th, 2009; December 23rd, December 25th. It happens unexpectedly and without any predictability when we are driving on the highway. Since the first incident, we've tried to avoid driving the car on the highway. We are currently borrowing a car from family and are trying to find a way to have it repaired for a reasonable cost. We will not drive our children in the car any longer because we believe it is putting them at risk.

67 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2009

I drove car to church; parked my car and went inside. After church is over, I came out, my van did start but I was not able to shift the gear, I had to tow it to repair shop to change break switch.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and he was advised that the transmission needed to be replaced. A complaint was filed with the manufacturer. He was advised by a representative that he would only have to pay a percentage of the repair. The failure mileage was 102,000.

70 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2009

Codes p0740,p0730and p0780 on 2003 Honda Odyssey - all relating to erratic behavior of transmission - sudden downshifts/gearchanges between 2nd and 3rd gears. Engine check light on. Tcs light on intermittently. It appears that defects of a similar and/or identical nature occur in many Honda Odyssey models before and after the model year 2003. Unpredictable transmission behavior is very distracting and may contribute to driver errors which in turn may lead to vehicular accidents on the road.
