Appears that there is an o ring issue on this year Honda Odyssey. Air is getting in the power steering pump/lines causing a whining during turns and acceleration. This is an issue that warrants a "TSB" to the mechanics and service industry, however, Honda has yet to announce a recall or offer assistance in the matter. This is our second Honda. . . We drove an accord to 246k miles and are big Honda fans. Hate that there is a known issue and no recall.
Groaning sound from power steering system and steering wheel hard to turn at low speeds. Took vehicle to Honda dealer knowing other 2006 Honda Odysseys had power steering problems and that the warranty on just the power steering pump had been extended to 7 years and 100,000 miles. I hoped the issue was just the power steering pump and that the warranty would cover it. Of course not! the problem is apparently in the steering rack and will require $1,200+ in repairs for a new one or the van will be a safety issue. I'm very suspicious that they have an extended warranty on the pump but not on the steering rack. Since I don't want to lose steering while driving and cause an accident, I am forced to have this defective part repaired at my own cost. With only 55,000 miles on the van, this is not the kind of safety or quality I would have expected from Honda.
2006 Honda Odyssey. Consumer states problem with rack and pinion leakage. The consumer stated he took the vehicle to have a recall rectified regarding the steering pump. However, as time went by, he began having problems with the steering while making turns. The consumer believed the leaking rack and pinion was related to the steering pump as they were integrated.
Lack of power steering. We bought this van at the end of September, 2012. We noticed this issue within a few days of owning it. This continues to be an on-going issue and is happening at various speeds and at various times. Not just in parking lots. This happens when slowing down to make turns in normal driving settings. It also happens when driving into round-abouts. This is a very serious safety issue! I tried to contact Honda via email once we began to notice it and got no reply. I have looked at different complaint websites and see this a lot. Recently, with the fuel pump recall, I called into Honda directly regarding the fuel pump. During the call, I described this steering issue to the rep. She said Honda knows of it and what they did was to extend the original warranty on the vehicles to 100,000 miles to repair it. However, it was not repaired in all vehicles. The issue is that periodically the power steering system stops working and you must manually turn the steering wheel. We have several children in our family. It is scary to know that the steering could cause a serious accident & cause serious injury or death. Many highways now have round-abouts at the exits. Many towns & cities are putting in round-abouts for traffic flow. I have been noticing this issue when coming into round-abouts at various speeds. The NHTSA needs to get involved and get Honda to recall these before serious injury or death occurs. Thank you.
Every time it is raining and car goes through a puddle the battery light comes on and the car looses power steering. Has happened numerous times and when going to the dealership I was told that they could not duplicate the problem because it was not raining at the time. They stated they could replace the power steering pump & reservoir and it might fix the problem. This is very dangerous and seems to be happening on quite a few of the Honda vehicles. I know another person who owns they exact same model and year and they are experiencing the same problem. Last few times it rained power steering went out 5-7 times during a 20 min drive so the number of times is increasing.
Driving on 2 lane highway with my 3 kids in the van. The battery light comes on and I hear a few brief clunks from engine area. Then I realize I have no power steering so I stop quickly at a safe spot. I look at the engine and see the accessory belt that drives power steering pump, alternator, and a/c is loose. I see that the outer ring on the crankshaft pulley is missing and only see rubber on its outside. It's over 100 deg. F outside and we're 10 miles from anything. I call a few towing companies and find one that can show up within an hour. We wait and also get a hold of a friend to pick us up after the tow truck shows up. They tow it to our local Honda dealer. The dealer replaces the crankshaft pulley and drive belt. Towing was $153. 40 and repair at dealer was $349. 56. Losing power steering on narrow two lane highway going 55 mph is unsafe and the crankshaft pulley should not fail even at 111k miles. I have owned the van since new and have all proper maintenance done (preventatively replaced accessory belt before and timing belt and water pump).
Power sreering pump noises. Hard to turn in cold weather.
Steering wheel in Honda Odyssey 2006 malfunction. Steering wheel locks and gets very tight at low speeds and cause van to get stuck in a position and one has to turn the wheel real hard or accelerate to change position. Especially difficult when maneuvering the van in parking lots or making sharp turns at traffic lights. At low speeds the power steering pump does not pump enough fluid according to dealer. The failure occurs always a low speeds and it leads to steering wheel getting stuck or becoming very tight to turn thereby causing the car to get stuck in one place. I reported the problem to Honda and said this is manufacturing defect and a huge safety issue which needs to be addressed. All they did was state it is a manufacturing defect. I almost could not turn at the traffic signal and could have got hit by the car behind me a few days back and also could not turn into a street in traffic and almost got hit by another car behind me since I could not move. Honda USA tells its consumers that they do not cover manufacturing defects leading to safety issues if vehicle is out of warranty. Soon enough this is going to lead to a lot of steering issues and you can check the web with the search term "Honda Odyssey 2006 steering issues" and you will find many incidents as related to the power steering pump. Steering is the crucial part of any vehicle and such callousness on part of Honda definitely calls for a investigation before we see a lot of accidents due a steering wheel getting stuck. The dealers diagnosis after check up was to replace the steering pump so that the pump will push enough fluid at low speeds and not cause the steering wheel to get stuck. There is a potential that this can also occur at high speeds but for me it happens a low speeds. Honda also does not allow consumers to talk to senior persons for resolution and stated consumer has reached end of line once it hits their phone system.
2006 Honda Odyssey. Power steering pump causing humming sound when turning the steering to the left or right. There is a TSB 07-005 for this. It's a known issue (defective part) and there are numerous owners who have reported the same on the internet, but Honda has not recalled the vehicles.
Loss of power steering at low speeds especially when trying to park. Was intermittent and progressed over two weeks. Brought to independent mechanic told nothing wrong with power steering fluid or components. One week later brought to Honda dealer told needs new power steering pump -car has 85,000 km. The pump should not give out so soon. $700. 00 repair. Asked about technical bulletins about power steering and mechanic said it only concerns the reservoir and that is not my issue. Will have to have it fixed but feel there is a known problem and I should not bear all the cost.
Power steering problem and pump failure.
2006 Honda Odyssey - power steering pump. The power steering pump whines, buzzes, or hums and intermittently becomes very hard to steer. Mechanic said power steering pump was defective and has seen this many times on 2005-07 Odysseys. Local Honda dealer confirmed that this was a common problem, but that Honda had not issued a recall.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey touring. The contact stated that the vehicle was difficult to steer at low speeds and when parking. He also heard a noise in the engine while driving. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the power steering pump was replaced. The contact had not spoken with the manufacturer when the complaint was filed. The VIN was unavailable. The current mileage was approximately 50,000. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
My Honda Odyssey has a manufacture's defect associated with the power steering system. It has an inconsistent buzz, whine, hum that can be heard predominantly at lower speeds. At times, the steering becomes tight making it difficult to steer the car. I have read about the service bulletins: TSB 2007 for the steering reservoir, and TSB 2010 for the steering pump. I will be calling the local dealer with hopes of correcting a poor design by Honda.
During 9/2009, I was informed by other driver's of my Honda Odyssey 2006 of difficulty turning my steering wheel at low speeds. I wondered about it and began to notice that I also had difficulty turning the steering wheel at low speeds especially while entering or leaving a parking space. In 9/2011, I had the steering examined and was told by the Honda dealership that the power steering pump needs to be replaced and is inoperable at low speeds. Apparently, american Honda issued a warranty extension for this issue of which I was not informed. This warranty extended the time frame for replacement of the power steering pump to 100,000 miles or 7 years. By 2011, I had 160,602 miles on my vehicle and was closer to the 100,000 mile mark back in 2009. In 2012, I was informed by another car repair shop of the warranty extension with encouragement to call american Honda. I did and was told that I didn't qualify, but could find document of the diagnosis and call back. In 2015, I find my receipt from Honda dealership from 9/2011 diagnosing the problem. I call american Honda. Their representative is polite, listens to my story, places me on hold then returns to the line and tells me that this will still not be covered. I have been "negligent" since not contacting american Honda back after my first call in 2012 or having the car repaired for this issue. Obviously, I want american Honda to assist since this is not an inexpensive repair. I understand their stance and wish they were more responsive to loyal customers. I have not experienced an accident due to the power steering pump not working correctly, but have worried at times especially when making turns and backing out of spaces. Through this complaint, I am hoping that further investigation might occur which will cause the replacement of the power steering pump to become a recall versus a warranty extension.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated as he was driving approx. 10 to 15 mph, he could turn the steering wheel but he had to force it to turn. No warning light came on and there was a noise when turning the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told to replace the steering pump and the reservoir which will cost $800 for the repairs. The contact told the dealer he was not willing to pay that expense. The manufacturer was called at least three times but stated the mileage was over the warranty and there is no recall for the failure. The failure mileage was 85,000.
2006 Honda Odyssey ex-l, steering wheel at low speeds freeze and does not turn in any direction. It happens very often on the highway when there is slow moving traffic, in a parking lot and reversing. I was told by the dealer who wanted 600 to fix this issue as being steering pump related issue. We had an extended service plan in which the dealer did a power steering flush that did not help at all. We wen to the dealer with this issue after about 1 year latter and since then there was nothing done regarding this. Recently our Honda warranty expired in July 2009 and the miles on the car are about 35k. All these days we were able to atleast navigate the wheel even it was tight but recently since last 1 month the car on slow speeds or on neutral does not turn the wheel at all. I request NHTSA to please investigate this issue with Honda vans. I spoke to several people and couple of them did mention this same problem. I feel very uncomfortable with the problem. When I take it to the dealer he avoided until the warranty is over and now is trying to cheat us.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. While driving approximately 30 mph, she noticed it became difficult to control the steering wheel and park the vehicle. The mechanic cleaned the power steering reservoir; however, that did not correct the failure. The dealer stated that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that someone would call the contact in reference to the failure. The estimated repair cost was $600. 00. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 69,000.
Hard steering occurs when car is hot. Honda dealer doesn't want to cover the repairs. Needs to change steering wheel pump.
At low speeds, the power steering pump on my 2006 Honda Odyssey ex-l looses all ability to turn. This is especially troublesome when trying to park. The only way to alleviate this is to put the transmission in neutral, apply a foot to the brake, and apply slight pressure to the throttle pedal. This obviously speeds up the power steering pump which allows me to turn the steering wheel. This is not a safe solution to perform for any reason.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph the steering wheel became very difficult to maneuver. The power steering malfunctioned sporadically. The power steer pump and reservoir were replaced by the dealer. Two years after the vehicle was repaired the power steering malfunctioned again. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer who replaced the identical parts. The contact noticed complaints regarding the power steering issue and stated that the manufacturer should issue a recall because of the safety issue. The failure mileage was 80,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey touring. The contact stated that the power steering pump would exhibit a loud, abnormal noise when the engine was warmed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the power steering system was defective. The manufacturer was contacted who offered to pay fifty percent of the repair costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 24,000 and the current mileage was 42,000.
After a 45 min drive we began to hear a jingling whining sound. Took the van to the dealership the next morning and the noise was gone. I was told that with no noise they couldn't find the problem. After a week I took it in and said that there was a problem with my van and they needed to keep it until they located the cause of the noise. I was informed after a few hours that my power steering pump needed to be replaced to the tune of $600. 00. After some discussion they agreed that they had been having complaints/problems with the power steering pumps and they would be willing to pay for the parts if I would pay for the labor. I have been told that this is huge danger because the power steering could completely fail at high speeds causing complete loss of control.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact noticed that when the steering pump became hot the wheel made a loud winding noise similar to a siren, causing the front end of the vehicle to lunge forward. The dealer was notified and advised the contact that it was normal and there were no recalls. The contact did not inform the manufacturer of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 52,000. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000.
While driving 2006 Honda Odyssey at highway speed noticible steering wheel shimmy while acelerating and coasting. Changed wheels tires powersteering pump rotation of tires brake rotors and nothing has changed. All tires were balanced.
Our 2006 Honda Odyssey ex was brought in for service and we requested the technician listen to a whirring noise and difficulty turning the steering wheel. We were informed the power steering pump needed to be removed and replaced. Upon further research we found this was listed as a know defect in the 2006 and only a Honda service bulletin was provided (07-005 issued 1/27/2009). This seems to be a known defect in this model year for this make of automobile.
2006 Honda Odyssey. Consumer writes in regards to defective part in rear motor mounts the consumer stated Honda was aware of the problem. Instead of correcting the problem they were passing the cost to the consumer. The consumer stated he started complaining about the vibration problem in July 2007. Despiteseveral trips to the dealership, without fully getting the problem resolved the rear motor mounts were never looked at until the van was out of warranty. The consumer was then informed it would cost $1000 to repair a problem that Honda was well aware of. The consumer also stated he was charged $26. 00 to un-twist the passenger side seat belt. The dealer stated seat belt don't twist by themselves. Two weeks later, after limited use of the set belt, it twisted again. The power steering pump was replaced. Updated 10/04/11.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicle made a groaning sound when making a turn. The noise typically occurred after the vehicle reached speeds of 40 mph and above. She took the vehicle to the dealer for repair and was told that there were reports of failure with the power steering pumps for that type of vehicle. The vehicle was repaired and the pump was replaced under warranty. After the repair was made, the vehicle completely lost power steering ability and made it impossible for the contact to steer. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the power steering pump was replaced again. The current mileage is 5,000 and failure mileage was 4,000. The consumer provided the invoices for repair. 05/21/07.
Engine started making a whining noise, mostly when turns were taken. I waited awhile until it just seemed to be getting louder, then continuous. The repair was done under warranty, however since they said that few cars are getting beyond 36,000 miles without needing a new one, when will this have to be replaced again?.
I purchased my 2006 Honda Odyssey in the spring of 2006, and the power steering pump makes an annoying whining noise. I have taken it to Honda dealers twice (once in NY & once in fla), and have been told that there is nothing wrong with the pump; that a "minor humming noise is normal". The technician said only that if enough customers complained, a service bulletin would be issued. So I've received no satisfaction or solution to the problem. The whining continues, and I'm supposed to accept it!.
My 2006 Odyssey has been in the shop 3 times for this complaint. The power steering pump makes a very bad whining noise when the temps are cold. I would say below 50 degrees. When warm weather approaches, you do not hear it. It is very embarrassing to me. The van was purchased brand new in November 2006 with only 4 miles on it. I started having trouble about a month after it was purchased and it was taken back to the dealer where I purchased it which is an hour and a half drive from where I live and the service department claimed they could not duplicate the problem. I finally got tired of taking it back and forth putting additional mileage on my van that shouldn't be and just said I would deal with it. Warm weather came and I didn't hear it anymore. Well then comes cold weather and I starting hearing it again so this time I contacted american Honda and the director for service and he met me half way and he heard the whining noise and stated this is a known problem for Honda and they are not sure how to fix the problem. He stated they had put 6 new power steering pumps on another Odyssey and could not fix the problem. Well they replaced my power steering pump and about a month later it started making the noise yet again. I contacted the service director again and he said he would note it and I could get it fixed when I wanted to so I have now taken my van back to the shop to get it fixed again. I will be writing a certified letter to Honda and will file the lemon law if need be. I have 3 kids and I really need my van and this has been the most unpleasant experience for me and my family. I bought a Honda due to the reviews and ratings but I will think long and hard about it the next time.
The power steering pump makes an intermittent loud whining noise when at idle, under power, and while turning. The problem comes and goes and only occurs when temperatures drop below 55 -60 degrees. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs in April 2006 but the problem could not be reproduced. After picking up the vehicle the problem began and I returned the vehicle to the dealer to positively identify the noise. Pump pressure was check and determined to be normal. I was told that the pump was normal and no repairs were needed. Through the warmer months of spring and summer the pump has made no noise. Now that the weather is getting cooler the pump is again whinning.
The contact owns a 2006 Odyssey. The contact heard a whining noise coming from the power steering pump. The noise grew louder and occurred more frequently. There were no recalls pertaining to the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 28,000 and current mileage was 38,000.
