For several months, have notice a shaking of the automobile when braking. Recently it has become severe enough that I considered it a safety hazard and took to dealer. Dealer service stated that rotors were warped and need to resurfaced. Service rep stated that this is fairly common on Odyssey, but considered normal wear and tear. Have never seen brake rotors warp at 30k miles. Major of mileage on car due to highway travel; not stop and go city travel. This seems to be premature for a brake failure. I am having the brake rotors resurfaced (as recommended by Honda service), but am concerned that this issue will return (since they will be the same rotors).

In 2011 after we bought the vehicle we took a trip to colorado where our brakes failed, I was pushing the brakes gently down a hill and after about 1 minute the car started to shake violently, I thought I had a flat so I pulled over and checked but the tires were fine, than I realized that the disc brakes have warped making the car difficult to slow down, after we made it back home we took the car back to the dealer were they turned the brakes to smooth it out and told us it was fine. It was fine for a little while 2-3 months when it started doing it again, we took the car back to the dealer again this time they replaced the discs in the front but they didn't want to we just had to fight with them to get it done. It didn't take but about 5000 mile when it started doing the same thing, this time I called other friends who owned the same style minivan and they told me that they experienced the same issue with the braked, this time I ordered a set of high performance disc brake set for the front to see if it makes a difference and it did. I had those disc brakes on for 2 years and the car is fine, the issue is that the brakes are not made well enough to hold up on the long term, because after braking down hill for about a mile the disc brakes in the front warp and cause the vehicle to shake violently, I told my friends what I did to remedy the problem and they all followed my lead to change out the factory front discs with a better quality one, and that seems to be working for now. I strongly suggest some to look into this matter because Honda should have upgraded the brakes on their own why should I have to pay out of pocket while the vehicle is still under warranty to have a safety issue like this fixed. I can tell you this that I will not be owning any Honda product in the future, I had too many issues with this one.
Brakes failed causing a crash. We bought the vehicle brand new in 2007 and have noticed spongy, soft, hard to stop brakes from the beginning. Dealerships, we have taken it to more than one, always say it's fine, no failure, no problem can be repeated. We had the brakes replaced just in case and have had both recall jobs fixed, one just last week. This week cars stopped short in front of my husband while he was driving, he could not stop, tried to slam brakes and the van would not stop, he put the pedal to the floor and nothing. He hit the car in front of him. We have had a few problems with trying to stop short in the past but have avoided a crash before. A recall is just not enough, it didn't fix the problem for our van. Also the airbag did not deploy.
While driving my 2008 Honda Odyssey touring, I experienced a brake failure after initially experiencing spongy pedal while driving. Brake pedal went completely to the floor and brakes begin to grind, nearly causing the vehicle to go through a on coming traffic light. As a repeat Honda Odyssey owner, I experienced the same braking issue with my 2006 Honda Odyssey ex prior to trading it in. I never experienced this issue with 2001 Honda Odyssey.

Honda Odyssey 2005: brakes fail when stopping on a curve/turn. Dealership says nothing wrong yet it continues to happen on warm days. During summer months in PA it will happen at least once a day. There is a grinding sound first and then loss of all control of vehicles brakes. Wondering if someone needs to die before this is fixed!?! dealership has had my vehicle many times about this and "everything is fine" continues to happen. The brakes seem soft compared to the loaner they gave me. Please help, this is endangering my family! all recalls for this vehicle have been performed, nothing has helped the brakes including the fix a few years ago. Dealership even tells me they have never heard of this happening yet internet research shows it is happening to others! it occurs during warm weather anywhere from 55 degrees up. The result is driver looses control for a few seconds, long enough to be in an accident, luckily, I have avoided many over the time I have owned the car.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that whenever the vehicle was driven 40 mph and over, the vehicle would shake abnormally with an accompanying rattling sound when applying the brakes. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times but the dealer was unable to diagnose or duplicate the failure. The contact was concerned that the brakes would fail at some point. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 30,000. Updated 06/07/lj.
During normal driving the brakes failed then began working again. When slowing for a stop sign using the service brake the vehicle failed to slow as expected despite increased pressure on the brake pedal. This caused the vehicle to roll through a stop sign. There was no collision or accident. Prior the incident the brakes worked normally. After the incident the brakes worked normally. It happened once on 1/13/10 and once in November 2009. It happened during typical rural driving, ~35mph 2-lane roads. The Honda dealer inspected the brakes, road tested the car and pronounced everything was ok on 1/14/10. They made no repair. This appears to be the same as NHTSA investigation pe09024 my wife was driving who is the normal driver of this vehicle.
1. Driver in stop and go traffic applied brakes to stop vehicle, however, vehicle did not stop in time and resulted in a rear-end collision. This occurred on 11/30/2009. 2. Vehicle owner reported that when the brake pedal is depressed, there is a lack of response. Braking time and distance became significantly longer than normal. This problem was first observed by the vehicle owner on 11/27/2009, however, the driver was able to stop in time on that date, and the vehicle then functioned normally until the collision that occurred on 11/30/2009. 3. Immediately after the accident on 11/30/2009, the vehicle owner reported that the vehicle brakes had failed to the auto insurance carrier, and took the vehicle to the dealership for a diagnosis. Upon arriving at the dealership, the service representative acknowledge that Honda was aware of the braking issue, and even though the vehicle was out of warranty, they offered to cover the repair at 90% and instructed the owner to collect the remaining 10% of the cost directly from Honda. The dealership diagnosis was that the abs module was leaking air into the brake system. All other braking components were operational. The dealership replaced the abs module, and bled the brake system to remedy the problem. The old parts were disposed of by the dealership prior to insurance carrier being aware of issue. Service records indicate that the vehicle owner had vehicle braking system maintenance completed on 8/19/2009 at the same dealership.
In November of 2008 I purchased a new 2008 Honda Odyssey from apple Honda of york, PA. . Several weeks later going down a fairly steep hill into the Lincoln highway, I had no brakes at all I could not even feel the brake peddle. Fortunately it was early in the morning and highway traffic was light. I was able to make a left turn into the highway and roll to s stop in a business parking lot. I shut off the engine until I recovered from the fright. I restarted the engine to move an actual parking place. Then I discovered that I had brakes. I assumed that being new to the Odyssey, that I had some how missed the brake peddle and that is why I did not even feel it. Thirty thousand miles later while turning into a parking place in a wal-mart lot I think the brakes did the same thing but my speed was so slow I was not sure. I drove thirty miles that day and had no concern or problem. That evening I returned to the same store and was parking in a remote area of the lot and had no brakes. Exactly like the hill incident a long time ago. I managed to steer away from everything until I got the Odyssey stopped. Again I shut off the engine and upon restarting had brakes. I drove very fearfully to the nearest Honda dealer an got there at 6am one hour before they opened to take advantage of light traffic. I told the service advisor at front range Honda in colorado springs, CO; that on at least two separate occasions I had no brakes at all and after shutting off the engine and restarting I had brakes. The service advisor wrote it up as my stating soft brake peddle. This is not the problem and not what I stated. Is Honda down playing a very serious problem? while in the service waiting area I used my laptop to research Odyssey brake problems and found a great many. They replaced the abs module. I am shocked that an electronic component can have intermittent problems that can cause complete brake failure.
Backing out of parking spot and brakes failed (brakes when applied went all the way to floor) and swiped another vehicle. Took to dealership and they did nothing but test drive it.
Our 2007 Honda Odyssey experienced rear brake failure at 2,700 miles due to rust build-up on the rotors. They were replaced by the dealer. The rear rotors again failed at 17,820 miles and had to be resurfaced. We are concerned about the braking system and the potential for continued failure creating an unsafe condition.
The contact owns a 2007 Honda Odyssey. The contact experienced failures numerous times with brakes, and steering. While the brakes were applied the brake pedal extended to the floor which required him to apply additional pressure to the brake pedal in order to stop the vehicle. The steering wheel was hard to control causing the vehicle to swerve from left to right. He had to apply additional force to the steering wheel in order to keep the vehicle in a straight line. The vehicle was taken to the dealership numerous times for the failures. The dealer removed air from the hydraulic fluid, but the repair didn't correct the brake failure. The wheels were aligned several times, but the steering failure wasn't corrected. The manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to a different dealership. The failure mileage was 15,000 and the current mileage was 36,000.
Purchased a brand new Honda Odyssey 2005 ex-l from fremont Honda in 2005. Just after two years when the brakes are hot and are applied sharply e. G. When coming down a hill they make a loud grinding sound. Sound seems to come from the front brakes. I took the vehicle to capitol Honda for a regular oil service and the technician stated the sound is normal, it is the abs kicking in. This is not the case, as I fear the brakes will fail one day as it sounds like metal on metal and may have an accident one day. I have raised this concern with american Honda who handles customer service that there is a design flaw with only 21,000 mile on the van. They stated I am out of warranty over 3 years/ 36,000 miles and to take it back again to the dealer. I will take it to the dealer again on 10/31/08. I want to elevate this issue/ customer concern to NHTSA to investigate grinding brake noise of 2005 Honda Odyssey van. Also conduct a google search on Honda Odyssey grinding brake noise and you will see hundreds of articles - there is clearly a fault that Honda needs to resolve and recall its vehicles and fix free of charge before large scale accidents occur.
Brake pedal must travel approximately two inches before any braking starts to occur. Even then the pedal must be pushed excessively far before real braking starts to happen. This occurs all of the time. Took it to the dealer and they said it is within normal range. Have never experienced brakes like this. Own 2 other Hondas and have had probably 25 different cars in lifetime. Nothing close to this unless brakes are failing. Honda Odyssey forum groups all report this as a problem on the newer (2007-2008) Odysseys. Biggest concern is at slower speeds where I have pushed the pedal a "normal" amount and nothing happened and almost hit car/object/garage. Worried that this will result in an accident due to sluggish brakes and way to much play in the pedal.
Brakes are too soft/mushy. Brakes don't work properly most of the time. It takes increasing pressure to stop vehicle. Sometimes the vehicle lurches forward after it stops which causes you to be out in intersections, past stop signs and possibly hit another vehicle. On Friday June 6, 08 the brakes failed again, this time at 60-65 mph. Another vehicle driving too fast swerving in & out of traffic pulled in front of me that required me to brake in order to avoid another accident. When pressure applied the vehicle did not slow down until brake pedal nearly touched the floor. W/ some great defensive driving an accident was avoided. A recent test drive by the dealership and they were unable to recreate the brakes problem. Upon taking the keys back, I had to depress the brake pedal nearly to the floor in order to shift into drive. I put the vehicle in park and returned to the service mgr to have him go on a test drive w/ me. He refused. I asked him 4x's to please test drive it with me driving. He said that he drove the vehicle, the district somebody drove the vehicle as well as a technician. He again stated nothing wrong w/ brakes. I left the dealership with the following information : 10dpsm/sm drove vehicle testing brakes. Competed panic stops at 40 mph, 20 mph. Brakes operated as designed. Tech drove vehicle while testing brakes and pedal stiffness. Panic stops at 10, 20, 30, 40 & 45 mph. Swerve side to side to test vsa as well. All systems operate as designed. I want to note that only 11. 5 miles were put on the van during their "test" of it . They did not test it under my normal driving conditions. I don't feel the vehicle was adequately test driven. The brakes will work off an on, but the longer it is driven and the more the brakes are used during that drive, the less reliable they become. Honda refuses to acknowledge that there may be problems with the brakes on their 2007 model vans despite all the info sent to them from the nhsta site.
Have three complaints. Complaint one: there is extremely long pedal travel for brake pedal. This travel gives the driver a sense of brake failure, as though the brakes don't work or will not stop vehicle. Has been noted in vehicle forums as a common problem complaint two: wind noise on the passenger and driver pillar that separates the front seat and the middle seat combination. Has been noted in vehicle forums this is a common problem. Complaint three: there is significant dirt in paint and paint shading where it doesn't match rest of vehicle (paint shading can be seen if the sun shines on the vehicle just right). Honda has offered to repaint affected parts. I feel this is a common problem and the owner shouldn't be required to have a new car repainted with less than 1000 miles. Has been noted in vehicle forums this is a common problem.
While parking at daycare, turn into parking spot, brakes fail. Brakes are pumped to the floor 5 times before hitting a large boulder causing major damage to suspension and frame. Also, airbags did not deploy, yet seatbelt locked in place. Dealer is doing repair since there is potential safety issue with the brakes. However after 55 days, still waiting for return of vehicle. Turns out computer regulating airbags failed as well. 2 defects that if the brakes had failed just 3 minutes sooner would no doubt have been a fatal accident on an interstate highway.
Brake failure on Honda Odyssey 2006 models when having more than 5 people in the vehicle. Very low braking power at speeds greater than 60 mph. This has caused a very cautious driving habit. This was brought to the attention of Honda dealership and was inspected as good condition. Has occurred many times. The vehicle shudders on application of brakes everytime to slow down. Total loss of braking power when driving down slope. Driving down slope, the brakes squeal (metal grinding over metal). This incident occurs when driving longer than 15 minutes downhill with constant application of brakes. Shifted the gear to the lowest, and yet there is no braking power. This happened when the vehicle was less than 4 months old. Dealer checked the vehicle to be fine.
Brake failure. Car sent in for repair in August 2005 (dealer gave a handout explaining why brakes were not a problem), September 2005 (dealer replaced brakes), brakes failed January 17, 2006. My husband could have been killed.
American Honda motor CO. , inc. Honda automobile customer service 1919 torrance boulevard mail stop: 500 - 2n - 7d torrance, CA 90501-2746 claim number: n012003-081100497 dear Honda, we are writing to you in order to put you on notice of a potential vehicle defect with my new 2003 Honda Odyssey, VIN: 5fnrl18033b104657. After having the vehicle just 6 weeks the vehicle experienced the following problems: 1. Brakes began to get softer and would not engage till almost to the floor 2. While waiting at a signal the car engine appears to be revving up and shaking 3. Rattling noise emanating from the muffler linkage 4. Low fuel warning light comes on when gage is still at â¼ tank. Of grave concern is an incident that occurred last Friday, August 8, 2003 while my wife was taking my son to celebrate his 6th birthday at summer camp. This is what happened: after making a turn on a steep hill my wife proceeded down the hill. While going down the hill the brakes completely failed to operate and the following lights illuminate on the dash , battery, oil, door open warning lights. The engine was still on and she had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. We were very fortunate that there was no accident, the vehicle was not going fast and we were able to bring the vehicle to a stop. My wife was extremely frightened and upset by the incident. She was almost in a very serious accident! we had the vehicle towed to beaverton Honda who advises us thus far they could not duplicate the problems. You can surely understand our concerns with this vehicle, especially if there appears to be nothing wrong with it. We would like Honda of America to take the following steps to protect our family and it's brand: 1. Provide us with a loaner Odyssey until& (2) 2. Exchange our Odyssey with the same exact vehicle from a different factory or fully refund our purchase.
After starting engine, instrument cluster indicated problems and brake pedal was inoperative. Shutting down engine and restarting restored normal condition. Reported condition to dealer and left vehicle for testing. It was returned to me after they could not find anything wrong. The same thing happened to me again 2 hours later, so I called the dealer and had them tow the van back to their lot. They kept it for a week, but still did not find the problem. They did tell me other customers had been reporting this problem with vehicles built in al (similar VIN) and they were investigating it. I was instructed to continue driving the vehicle unless I could "consisently reproduce the failure". The service tickets for both visits do not mention the brake failures I reported. They are calling it a "bulb check". I called the national Honda customer service line and they agreed with the dealer. I am very concerned about these vehicles because I believe this problem could cause the brakes to fail when the vehicle is in motion.
