My vehicle has experienced multiple dangerous incidents where it shuts down or shifts into neutral while driving. This has happened on highways, tunnels, busy on-ramps and main streets. The car loses power and requires restarting, which takes about 30 seconds. On a busy highway or street, this is enough time for a serious accident to occur if other vehicles cannot switch lanes on time. This has happened multiple times with my child in the car, and me being currently pregnant. The vehicle has never given me a warning prior. The issue appears to be related to the auto start/stop system and/or electrical drivetrain controls. The vehicle is unsafe to operate because the driver can forget to disable auto start/stop and the car can suddenly lose power in traffic. There was also a separate incident (in between the multiple incidents above) where I was on the highway, my car accelerated, brakes wouldn't work, and my foot wasn't on the gas. The car then shifted to neutral and the only way I could stop was by shutting it off and moving to the breakdown lane. There have been two repair attempts. The first repair was done in 2024 after the initial loss-of-power incident related to the auto start/stop feature. In this repair, the battery was replaced and I was told a full diagnostic was run and the car was safe to drive. On 11/11/25 the serious incident with acceleration/ loss of brake function on the highway occurred. A full diagnostic was run and the transmission was replaced under warranty. However, a month after the transmission replacement, the loss of power issue returned. It has now been at least 4 incidents since the transmission was changed. I reported this to Honda corporate and received a case number, but despite multiple attempts to receive an update over the past 2 months, I have not been contacted by Honda, and no resolution has been provided. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle and no longer trust further repairs.

Auto idle malfunctioned. At a stop light the engine turned off and it took 5 minutes to restart the engine. No warning lights or messages appeared before it happened. Had the pgm-FL idle stop software update done 9/16/23 at 17,582 miles. Took to dealer they could not re create , the car has 46,359 miles now. This is 2nd vehicle this has happened to me , other vehicle same exact auto idle problem started at 60,000 and I drove it for 13,000 miles experiencing stalling out at lights and in stop and go traffic for over a year ( very dangerous and scary experience ) I took it to 2 different Honda dealers numerous times before they finally replaced starter assembly , starter relays and adjusted the valves per the March 2023 warranty extension notice .

Engine failed and now the piston rod is knocking inside the engine. Engine failure while operating a vehicle is extremely dangerous and could cause an accident or death to myself and anyone else around my vehicle while its being operated. This type of issue can even cause a fire in the engine bay. When the issue presented itself I was going 60 down the highway. Yes, the vehicle has been in two independent shops which have both confirmed the engine failure due to premature connecting rod bearing wear which was most likely caused by manufacturer crankshaft issues. No it has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance, or others. No there were not any warning lights, messages, or sysmptoms prior to the failure.

The starter failed to start the car due to what is described as a "frozen starter". A TSB exists for Honda where the problem is acknowledged, TSB 23-023. This left me stranded in the cold on 1/26 and 1/27. Many other drivers of similar vehicles have reported this problem in the past week. The problem is uniquely and disconcertingly dangerous as the problem impacts drivers who are in freezing conditions which can be inherently life-threatening if a known issue exists with a "frozen starter", this problem cannot be rectified by vehicle maintenance, for example, having a new battery or jump starter does not fix the problem. This problem strikes drivers in freezing and life-threatening conditions and is inherently unsafe and hazardous. The vehicle has not been inspected as Honda would not honor rectifying this issue for an "out of warranty" vehicle despite widespread concern. There were no warnings or messages prior to the problem. They first appeared in freezing cold after a precipitation event.

2022 Passport was driven from indianapolis in to naperville IL on the evening of Jan 24th experiencing snowy and freezing conditions. Car was left overnight outside and would not start on the morning of the 25th. Warning lights displayed were battery and flashing engine light, one click on start up but no other noises. On the morning of the 26ths aaa provided services to try and jump the battery and eventually had to tow vehicle to valley Honda aurora IL for service. Vehicle under went troubleshooting on the morning of the 28th after being left outside. Vehicle still refused to start tech suggested replacement of starter or iaw Honda service bulletin 23-010 and 23-023 letting vehicle starter thaw. Vehicle was brough inside into a warm environment overnight and started on Thursday the 29th. There were no prior indicators of issues until the morning of the 25th.
Car shuts down and does not restart. Also goes to neutral and does not allow car to be steered. Also seems to be related to auto restart.
During a normal drive we came to a stoplight, seconds after stopping, an emissions alert displayed along with transmission and vsa (I think). Upon seeing these codes I began to drive into a gas station and the vehicle barely moved with little power. We were able to park about 40 feet away and the vehicle would not move any further. This sounds similar to the existing recall but this model year is not included. I had to have the vehicle towed.
Vehicle has been having ais issues for a couple of years, requiring new batteries, new starter/relays and countless internal computer updates (none of which have helped btw. . . ). This morning she had the ais engaged, went to turn left at a green light and when she released the brake the vehicle threw itself into neutral and flashed a "auto idle stop system problem" message on the dash. She put it into park and tried to restart, which failed, she then had to turn the vehicle off completely and restart from there. As I mentioned, none of the computer updates Honda has done for this vehicle have helped and it's my understanding there is a block of vehicles in this age range (all Passports, ridgelines and pilots) that continue to have problems with the ais as well. Honda needs to disable this "feature" on any vehicles they cannot fix via computer updates immediately before they get someone killed. Not to mention, we are sick and tired of having to replace the battery and/or starter every couple of years. Honda should not be putting tax breaks above their customers safety and satisfaction. You know it's bad when their 30+ year techs go out of their way to buy a used Honda just to avoid the ais because they don't know what to do with it at this point either.
At approx. 5 years of age & 67,500 miles, the engine began to make rattling or ticking noises that were in sync with engine speed (rpm). Within 1 day of noting the noise, I took the first available appointment to bring the vehicle to my local Honda dealership, napleton Honda in loves park, IL. Napleton Honda diagnosed the issue as "rod knock" due to failing connecting rod bearings. The dealership advised that the only recourse is to replace the engine. Honda motor corp (manufacturer) was notified by me about the issue, but they declined to make any substantive effort to assist with the repair costs despite the fact that the issue is increasingly known and documented as per NHTSA campaign # rq24013.
My Honda is 3. 5 l v6 engine blew up I know there’s a recall for the 3. 5 l v6 engine on my Honda. However, the recalls don’t include the Passport, which is what I have but the connecting rods blue causing engine failure.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda Passport. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle began to shake. The vehicle was steered into a parking lot and the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
My 2023 Honda Passport is having shifting problems (high revs, slow nd unpredictable power to wheels) harsh acceleration (not easy to safely /smoothly gauge power and speed from acceleration to wheel) high revs "stuck" --not shifting down smoothly/safely these issues are on going. I also researched and saw this has been reported b y other Honda Passport( 2023) owners. I contacted dealer 10/16/25 to document the complaint and asked dealer to call me back if any service advisories or recalls, they said no, but a service advisor wuld contat me if they felt a follow up was needed. also, the vehicle had 'catastrophic' computer failure with power lost and warning lights within first 2 years --transmission lost power/engine still ran and forced into the breakdown lane and have vehicle towed. . Dealer did some type of reset. VIN # 5fnyf8h59pb027063.

On 10/16/2025 at 1:30 am, I was driving home from work on the I-94 freeway in wisconsin from my work in franklin, WI to my home in union grove, WI. I was driving at the speed limit, which was 70 mph. I started to hear a ticking sound coming from the engine, and then the check engine light started to flash. The car then began a rapid speed decrease. I started to move from to the right-hand side of the road when the car stopped ticking and the check engine light went out and began to accelerate again. The sudden deceleration and acceleration on a major highway that had many other vehicles around me was very dangerous. I drove the car to my home since it seemed to be working again. I then had it towed to zeigler Honda in racine, WI, on the morning of 10/16/2025, to find out what the cause of the incident was. The authorized Honda dealership (zeigler) inspected the car and found that the crank bearing for the second cylinder had failed. They said the engine was not repairable. Before this incident, the car had no other problems. All required Honda maintenance was performed on the car, which I purchased new. The week before the incident, I had a routine oil change done at the zeigler dealership with a passing inspection on the car during the oil change on 10/10/2025.
To preface: all of these issues only occur when the engine idle feature is on. I have not experienced any of these problems when the feature is off. Question #1: when I release the brake with the engine idle on, the vehicle will sometimes completely shut off. When this happens, the steering wheel and brakes lock up, and I am unable to restart the vehicle for at least 60 seconds. Question #2: on one occasion, my wife, our 8-month-old child, and I were stuck at a green light for about 60 seconds while unable to restart the vehicle. Cars were passing by at over 50 mph, and we were relying on other drivers to notice us in time. This situation has happened multiple times and poses a serious safety risk to both us and others on the road. Question #3: I have not taken the vehicle in for service because the issue is difficult to reproduce consistently. That uncertainty is part of the problem, along with the anxiety of not knowing whether the car will suddenly shut off. Question #4: for the same reason, I have not been able to demonstrate the problem on demand. However, the main concern is that I should not have to worry about my vehicle stalling when I go to accelerate. Question #5: the vehicle has completely shut off four separate times over the past year. On one occasion, after releasing the brake, the engine struggled to reach normal rpms and the check engine light came on. I pulled over, turned the vehicle off, restarted it, and it seemed fine afterward, although it had noticeably less power while the check engine light was on. Lastly, there have been several instances where the engine did not completely shut off when the idle feature was on, but when I released the brake to accelerate, I heard a clicking sound and the vehicle seemed as though it was about to stall. It then resumed operation normally as the idle system re-engaged. Since this happens intermittently, it has been difficult to recreate during a diagnostic inspection.
I am submitting this report regarding a serious safety issue with my 2025 Honda Passport related to the auto stop/start feature. When this feature is enabled, the vehicle frequently struggles to restart smoothly after coming to a stop. The engine often hesitates and sounds as if it may not start at all. On September 26, 2025, the problem escalated into a complete failure. While turning left at an intersection, the auto stop/start feature engaged, shutting off the engine. When I attempted to accelerate, the vehicle failed to restart and became fully disabled in the middle of traffic. This created an immediate and significant safety hazard. Law enforcement was called to the scene, and a tow truck was dispatched. However, due to incorrect information and safety concerns, I did not proceed with the tow. Fortunately, the police were able to jump-start the vehicle, allowing me to drive it directly to the dealership. The dealership confirmed that there is an issue but has been unable to replicate the complete failure. They have performed two battery tests, both of which returned normal results. While they acknowledge the problem, they have not been able to formally diagnose it. I have since learned that similar issues and recalls have been reported for earlier Honda model years, suggesting that this problem may still exist in newer vehicles, including the 2025 Passport. Since the incident, I have been disabling the auto stop/start feature every time I drive in order to avoid being stranded again. However, hesitation during restarts continues to occur daily when the feature is active. Given the severity of the safety risk and the inability of the dealership to diagnose or resolve the issue, I am requesting that Honda conduct a formal investigation into this malfunction and take appropriate corrective action. This issue should be fully addressed under warranty, as it directly affects the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2022 Honda Passport. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph with cruise control engaged, the vehicle unintendedly decelerated to 25 mph. The accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact pulled over safely. The engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle had received an oil change 5 days prior to the failure. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who determined that the engine had seized and that the bottom lifter had failed. The mechanic determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The local dealer was contacted but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Passport. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the connecting rod bearing in cylinder #3, resulting in damage to the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 23v751000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 73,000.

The first major issue I just started running into at about 90,000 miles is the engine auto start stop feature. I usually disable it when I drive due to the inability for the car to provide adequate start from a stop, but when I don’t, I’ve had the vehicle completely stall on me at a stoplight and won’t let me restart the vehicle for several minutes leaving me stranded and vulnerable sitting in a lane on a highway. I’ve had about a dozen instances of this issue now over the last several months. The second issue is with the adaptive, cruise control or the emergency, stopping on the vehicle where it will jam on the brakes, even though there are no cars in front of me it inaccurately picks up vehicles in the oncoming lane. There are more than 8 feet separated from my vehicle. I have had the system recalibrated and have complained about it at the dealer, but I’ve been told that there’s nothing wrong with it. Just thought I’d report that as well because it’s almost got me into several accidents by jamming on my brakes for no reason and almost being rear-ended.
The auto-start/stop function sometimes fails to restart the engine after coming to a complete stop. Vehicle is left stranded in a traveling lane.
At a red light in an intereection the auto engine idle stopper feature stopped the engine and it failed to power / restart the engine. The cars electral system locked up. Could not restart engine, and could not put car in neutral because engine needs to be on. Had to car battery jumped. Took car to Honda dealership after incident. They concluded that the battery and electrical systems passed all diagnostic tests. If this is the case there is a major safety issue with the car.

The Passport is equipped with an auto stop/start engine feature. In the last week, while stopped in traffic in the roadway the engine shut off, but did not turn back on causing the car to stall in traffic for several minutes before I was able to restart it. The vehicle shifted to neutral and wouldn't restart until the power was fully off and the door was opened and closed. Both times I was stuck in a travel lanes for approximately 3-5 minutes.
The engine suffered a failure of the connecting rod bearings and wrist pin or pins. It necessitated a short block replacement.
Owned the 2021 Honda Passport for 4 years and have had multiple issues over that time. 1st. Electrical issues. Randomly while driving the center/head unit will continuously restart on a loop until vehicle is turned off and turned back on. 2nd. The speakers make crackling noises randomly while driving. Even when the audio/speakers are turned off the crackling continues. (very loud and annoying) 3rd. The Passport sometimes shuts off completely when stopped at red lights and has difficultly turning back on / restarting. This showed an error that there was a battery issue, which the battery had just been replaced a month or two earlier. It said something about being in accessory mode. 4th. The sensor that tracks oncoming traffic goes off sporadically. There are times on single lane roads that the car forces the breaks on because it senses cars on the other side. 5th. There has been issues while accelerating that feel like the car is having trouble shifting. It continues to rev but not go, when letting off the gas it almost feels like its doing an engine break to get back down to a certain rpm or something. Had the whole car bouncing, had to pull over and turn off the car to get it to start working properly. *** all of that said, this car has been and continues to feel unsafe to drive for multiple reasons listed above. I'd be more than happy to go into more detail for them if needed. ***.
Auto idle stop feature fails and I can not get the engine to start for a few minutes. I get stuck in traffic with horns honking behind me and people mad and passing me in an unsafe manner. I have replaced the battery and have had the battery and starter retested; they are ok. I brought it to easy Honda, in houston, and they say they can't find anything wrong, since it only happens intermittently. My problem has existed since I bought the vehicle new. I have 55,000 miles on the vehicle. Also, intermittently, the engine will not crank over when it is a hot engine. I live in houston, so it is hot a lot. I read that this is a problem with millions of Honda and Acura vehicles. When can we get some help on a fix? Today, while backing from my driveway into our residential street, I came to a complete stop and placed the vehicle's transmission from reverse to drive and when doing so, the vehicle shut itself off, put itself into park and engaged the parking brake. I was able to re-start the vehicle and it operated as usual. We have an appointment scheduled with our local Honda dealership on 05/19/25 to inspect the vehicle.

While at a stop light, there was an engine start failure that caused the vehicle not to restart. It took me approximately 5 minutes to get it to start again.
While stopped at a busy intersection under a red light our 2020 Honda Passport's 'auto idle stop function' had automatically stopped the engine with the brakes applied, upon releasing the brakes the engine did not restart as it was supposed to. I reapplied the brakes which were no longer 'powered brakes' and tried ot restart the vehicle but it would not start. A message came up on the dash to put the vehicle in park which I did. At that point when starting the vehicle it did start, put it in 'd' and drove past the interection to the relief of all those behind me. Had this been my wife I doubt she would have been able to do this as quickly as I did. This is a safety hazard and Honda needs to have a recall to fix this issue. Currently we are trying to remember to keep the 'auto idle stop function' in the 'off' position. We bought this vehicle new and have kept it in great condition.
Car feels sluggish and delays accelerating when driven. Occasionally will make a strange sounds when trying to accelerate. The automatic brake will engage when there no obstacle in front of me while I’m driving- has happened a few times since I bought the car. At times, the car will not turn on when the ignition button is selected for no apparent reason.
I purchased a 2021 Passport this week with 22k miles. Test drive was great, but the next day I noticed a knocking sound coming from the engine at low rpm on a warm engine. I took back to the dealer twice and they told me it was normal… I took it to another Honda and they diagnosed crank bearing knock. I just purchased this car with low miles and it has engine problems which is very scary. Maintenance records are great. I’ve been reading forums and this problem is very common with these engines. A lot of people have been told it was normal, but it is not. It’s very scary and dangerous to find out I bought a defective engine. I have a video of the knocking sound.
Description: I have a concern that I will follow-up with a letter via usps. Imagine driving your 2019 Honda Passport on an interstate, speed limit is set at 70; your speed is 75; you're in the middle of the three lanes of travel; and your vehicle suddenly decelerates and every warning the vehicle is equipped with start giving alerts in rapid succession. This is what happened to me on [xxx] at approximately [xxx]. What is concerning is that this exact same thing happened April 2023 and I was told it was the idle control sensor. The dealership that sold me the vehicle was gracious enough to let me bring it to them for repair, without charging the full cost of the part but, labor cost I incurred. When a consumer purchases a vehicle, the second most expensive purchase in one's lifetime, it is implied that outside of normal and routine maintenance, the car has been assessed and inspected for drivability. Being that this is the second occurrence, I am questioning if this vehicle was thoroughly inspected for this issue? I had my vehicle towed to the greensboro Honda dealership, 3633 w. Wendover Ave. , greensboro nc 27407. Although my faith and loyalty to the Honda brand has diminished, the customer service provided by ms. Karen was comforting and reassuring. She understood my concerns and was phenomenal in letting me know what to expect. Surprising for a weekend as, most employees are not wanting to work. The reason for this email is two fold, notification of the issue and hoping that Honda will take accountability financially and resolve whatever "root" issue(s) that could be cause. Thank you and if my life has any significance to you, I hope to hear from you regarding this serious concern. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I was exiting a highway onto another highway. It was a pretty sharp exit to the right. The vehicle lost engine power, and I couldn't travel greater than about 40 miles/hour. The vehicle would not respond to my pressing the accelerator. Upon getting off the exit onto the next highway, I immediately pulled over and shut the vehicle off. I waited a few minutes before restarting the vehicle. Once I restarted the vehicle, it was back to normal. There were no further issues for the rest of the drive (about 90 miles). This has happened 3-4 times since I purchased the vehicle.
The idle-stop system engages as expected when the vehicle comes to a stop, but the engine fails to restart when I release the brake pedal. This leaves me stranded in traffic and vulnerable to collisions, especially in high-traffic areas like intersections. The car has completely stalled and remains frozen for at least 3 minutes. Instrument panel lights up and says to depress pedal fully and press the start button. Another message says something about being in neutral and then to put it in park. I'm doing what it says and I cannot get the car to start. I have a green light and I'm stuck in an intersection where opposing traffic has a green light as well. People are honking at me and nervous because of the unpredictibilty of my car. - frequency: this occurs at least 1x/month for the past 65 months (lifetime of the vehicle) - conditions: occurs during normal driving conditions, typically in stop-and-go traffic. - impact: this issue has resulted in significant delays and near-misses with other vehicles, posing a clear safety hazard. The vehicle has been evaluated by a Honda dealer regarding idle-stop system malfunction specifically on the following dates October 1st, 2020, February 2nd 2023, March 16th, 2023 may 11th 2023, November 7th 2024 and January 9th 2025. The vehicle was found to be in normal working order and multiple times I was told to disengage the auto idle stop (press the button) to prevent that from happening. There was a recall for idle-stop software update which failed to repair the issue. This has been a persistent problem and the above dates by no means reflects the only times that the engine fails to restart after auto-stopping.
This issue has happened three times. The first two times, I attempted to accelerate while driving on the highway and the engine momentarily lost power. I would say the events lasted 3 - 5 seconds. The third time, the engine lost power while I was driving on the highway and the vehicle never regained enough power to go over 26 miles an hour - with the accelerator depressed to its maximum limit. Fortunately, I was near my exit, so I exited the highway and drove the car 4 miles to my destination. This is the only time out of the 3 instances a flashing "check engine" light came on. I shut the car off, went to my appointment and then restarted the vehicle approximately 30 minutes later. No other issues were noted on the 3 hour return trip. This last event happened on [xxx]. I took the car into the service department at ken vance Honda, in eau claire, WI on January 29, 2025 and they were unable to find any stored codes in the computer related to the issue. The service advisor said he has heard of this issue several times. The estimate to fix the issue was roughly $850. 00 with parts accounting for $501. 74 I researched this issue online and found several references to it. The first is a post from a online group for Honda odyssey owners. One post in that thread leads to another thread for Honda ridgeline owners. The first website: [xxx] and the post on that site that has a link to the second and more damning site. Mtman 124 posts · joined 2017 #4 · Jun 22, 2024 been a nagging problem on the ridgeline since 2019 on cold winter days. [xxx] there are several other references to similar issues on the internet and Honda is obviously aware there is an issue. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.
