1 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/19/2020

In January of 2019,my car began shutting off while I was driving. The battery light would appear on the dashboard before the car would completely shut off. I tried to have it fix but nothing worked. I'm September 2019, as I was driving 60mph on the highway, I suddenly heard a loud noise after which my car shut off and would not start again. I was able to have it towed to the nearest Hyundai dealership and was told I needed a new alternator, battery, and there was a misfiring. All these issues werefixed. My car has continued to shut off and I had to bring the car back to the dealership at which I was told they could not find anything wrong with the car. Something is seriously wrong with this vehicle and I am anxious and scared to drive this car. I have had to buy 3-5 batteries since purchasing this vehicle in 2016. My car is currently at the dealership due to this issue.

5 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/18/2017

At 11:15am I was driving south bound on I-294 mile marker 29 going about 60 mph in the fast lane on the left. When all of a sudden my engine light, battery light, and all the lights on the dash board lit up, at the exact same time my car began to spin. I began to spin 360 degrees, into 2 of the right lanes as I turned the steering wheel I began to spin 3 lanes back to the left. By the time I stopped spinning I had spun into the emergency lane facing south. Fortunately the speeding cars were able to Dodge hitting me and I ended up in the emergency lane without hitting the median strip or any cars or truck. My car appeared to be in perfect condition except my dash board lights were lite but I had noticed that the heat went off simultaneously with the lights on the dash board turning on. I had never had anything like this happen before. I called 911 and a state trooper came along with I-dot who advised me to call for a tow and they pulled off leaving me in a dangerous spot with no hazard lights in the light drizzle. It began to rain and eventually snow. After2 hours I called to inform them that I was still on the side of the road and that cars wouldn't be able to see me due to the sleet and the slight fog it was creating. I also let them know that the tow company didn't want to tow me from the left side of the highway. I-dot came, tried to jump my car, and then left me to wait for the tow truck. After a total 4 hours the tow truck finally arrived and towed me to pep boys. Once at pep boys they stated that my battery was dead but my alternator was working properly. They replaced the battery and I drove home 6 miles without incident. My Hyundai gave me no warning and turned off while driving on the highway for no apparent reason. I blessed to have escaped death and a massive truck and car pile-up on I-294 right outside of chicago.

We have had problems with this car for years now. 2 of the issues the dealership could not even fix the problem. On 11/15/2016 with 12185 miles on the car, we had to replace the battery on the car. On 05/22/2017 with 15516 miles on the car, we had to replace (2) tires on the car because the tires were bald. On 11/03/2017 with 18268 on the car, we had to replace the other (2) tires on the car because the tires were bald. We had problem with the car stalling. The dealership could not find anything wrong with the car. On 01/18/2018 with 20747 miles on the car. We had a problem with a sound when the car starts. When the car starts it sounds like metal clinking. It does not matter if the car is cold in the morning or anytime of the day. When I start the car, it makes this sound. I had to tape the sound so the service advisor could hear the sound. The tech could not hear it. 02/08/2018 with 20749 miles on the car. We still had the problem with a sound when the car started. When the car starts it sounds like metal clinking. The dealership kept the car overnight. The next day the tech did hear the sound. They tested the alternator and it was bad. They had to replace the alternator on the car. After the dealership replaced the alternator I still had the same sound as before. The replacement of the alternator did not stop the sound. 03/20/2018 with 20802 miles on the car. We are still having the same sound when the car is started. It does not matter what time of the day the car is started, the same sound happens. It sounds like a metal clinking. I had a tape of the sound, the tech did not hear a thing. We are still having the same issue with the sound when the car starts. I am scared to start the car because the dealership can not find out what is wrong with it. I am scared it might blow up when the car starts because of this issue.

10 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/13/2010

Multiple electrical failures for unknown reasons. Car has required multiple jumps because of drained battery, both battery and alternator tested within normal ranges and dealer could not find source of issue. Seems to occur after episodes of heavy weather, radio also dies completely and not fuse related. Lights (day/night) burn out periodically at an accelerated rate. Bought car brand new in 2008.

11 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

Battery charge keeps draining in a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, have replaced the battery 3x, alternator works well but if the car sits without starting for longer than 24 hrs it will drain the battery, the battery has not been frozen and holds a charge when tested independently, vehicle is used only for paved driving, and we do not use salt on the roads here during the winter, all other electrical systems have tested fine but I cannot afford to bring the car in to a shop for a full diagnostic at this time, this issue began back in October 08 with no warning and has continued through the winter and now in spring. Is there any possible explanation? I am not a mechanic and so would not even consider doing any work besides minor maintenance.

12 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/14/2006

Headlights burning out frequently was the first sign of problems, replaced them as the dealer said this was inherent to the 2001 Elantra. In August 2006 check engine light came on. Also, the air bag sensor light was on, headlight out again, took car to dealer, they called back and said that the alternator had been over charging and not only was the over charging burning out the headlights it also had taken out the cruise control module, and air bag module. Car had only 42000 miles on it, and was 2 weeks from being out of the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty. Well here it is 6 months later and 47000 miles and check engine light is back on, I have since purchased a diagnostic tool to read the codes. The car was running rough at idle. The codes came up as mis fire on cylinder 3, tps sensor failure and map barometer failure. I replaced the plugs and wires, engine still ran rough. Took car back to dealer they replaced the tps, still running rough, they suggested that because of the faulty tps that the excessive dumping of fuel into the jets could have caused one of them to be clogged. I had them clean the jets as well as replace the plugs and wires again (they had also found that #3 wire had been arcing. ) this took care of the idle problem. I took the car home and the next day driving the car would surge between 3rd and 4th gear, engine light back on. Still have the map error. Dealer ended up replacing the map sensor. It has been about a month since this last occourence and all I can do is cross my fingers until I trade it in. Abl. Pco.

14 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/16/1998

Engine lights comes on,surges, misses, jerks, dies, tapping noise, loses power, these things have happened repeatedly. Other repairs 9-26-98 alternator, generator mileage 24662: 10-29-98 missing and rough idle couldn't find problem, mileage 25350; 3-22-99 plug and cable set changed again, mileage 29167; 4-12-99 replaced transmission part, mileage 29760; have talked to consumer assistant center, the dm,all I am told is to keep taking it in . Am very unhappy with this car and am afraid to drive it on the highways because it lost all power when driving on I- 65. Was towed in 2 times because of no power. They offered for me to trade it in on a new car, that would mean another 5 yr. Loan and another $50. 00 a month payment. I did not feel this was a very good solution . Service dept. Has been good as trying to find the problems, but I am not happy that they have not replaced this car at no cost to me, for all the problems I have had.

15 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/06/1997

Since the purchase of my car new I have had the transmission replaced three times, the pulse generator replaced twice, and the electrical wiring replaced twice because it kept buring out. I would repeatedly take my car into fairfax Hyundai for service due to slipping transmission, car cutting off and steering locking up while driving on the beltway at 65mph smoke coming out of the exhaust etc. Finally on 17 March 1999, approxiamately 4 weeks after paying 350 dollars to have my engine cleaned (recommended by service manager) my engine blew at 15 mph. Oil was spurting out everywhere and the dealership has refused to give the the Hyundai complainant line number. The customer service rep. Stated that I would have to get that number from the service manager at the dealership where I purchased the car. . The service manager tommy has refused to give me the number but states that he is willing to work out a reasonable rate for parts a labor. Granted I have 78,000 miles on a 97' however these are all highway miles 167 miles roundtrip to work. All scheduled maintanence was done. I do not think nor feel that I should have to be saddled with this lemon any longer nor should I have to pay for any repairs since the car has been going back for major engine problems since 6/97 three months after purchase.

16 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/23/1996

Electrical ignition coil: when driving car will lose power and shut completely off. Pull off the highway and restart and it will run fine . Tokk to dealer and was told the first time it was the ignition coil wire, the second time dealer said it was the alternator.
