1 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/03/2020

For the past several months I have had a reoccurring issue with my 2012 Hyundai Elantra. About 1-3 times a week, my car will not start. All lights, radio, etc. Work fine when key is turned to on/start position but car will not start. It makes one click sound and then nothing. Generally, if I keep trying it will eventually start. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes and sometimes it takes a few hours. Along with this, about once a week my car will shift gears hard. It is an automatic and otherwise shifts fine. I have had routine maintenance completed on time since I bought this car in 2016. I have brought my car to my mechanic several times in the last few months and he cannot determine the problem since the car does not do this regularly. I read online that it could be the neutral safety switch (range inhibitor) so I replaced that. The problem still exists. I contacted the Hyundai dealership from which I purchased my car and they have no answers.

3 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/20/2020

For the last week after sitting overnight my car will not start. I get in while its parked stationary on the street, turn the key, all the lights come on, I can hear the fuel pump kick on, (there is no click), and nothing happens. After I repeatedly turn the key it has been starting but I am afraid it will just not start at some point. Called the dealer where I purchased they car, they said to call the Hyundai dealer. Called Hyundai dealer, they said they have not heard anything about the problem and would have to replicate problem (there are complaints all over the internet about this problem) they said I would have to leave the car with them, with no chance of a loaner (I cannot afford to uber 26 miles a day). I told them once I get it started for the day, it usually starts right back up after being turned off. I took a video of the problem this morning. It had the same trouble starting this morning when cold, and then when I got to work, 13 miles away, I turned it off and attempted to start it, it did the same thing (thats why I obtained the video of the issue). I am going to have to borrow a family members car to drive while they diagnose this widely reported problem they have "never heard of". I owned a 2007 Elantra since it was new and just sold it to buy this piece of garbage. . I never had one issue in 13 years of ownership. Hyundai needs to take accountability and recall this issue.

4 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/13/2019

I drove my 2013 Hyundai Elantra Tuesday evening and parked it at 9pm. Went to start my car to go to work at 730am and it would not start. All of the lights came on, headlights and radio worked the car just would not start. I tried to start it 5 more times, it is push start. I called and had my car towed that evening, the tow guy came and put it in neutral and it started right up. I still had the car towed because I have had so many electrical issues with this car. It has been at the Hyundai dealership for 4 days now and no one can tell me what is wrong with it. It has started a couple times for the dealership but not consistently. I keep calling and asking what the issue is but they have no idea what it is. I have read numerous comments about the same issue with this car. This needs to be a recall this is not fair to us as Hyundai customers. This should be recalled and paid for by Hyundai.

5 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/21/2018

I tried to start my 2013 Hyundai Elantra limited. The brake pedal would not depress and the car would not start but made an electronic clicking noise. This has been an issue for a couple of years now but becoming more frequent. It has stranded me amd my infant children twice this past year and myself twice. The dealer has made suggestions but none work. Looked online and hundreds of other owners of all models having starting issues. Don't understand whyissue has not been recalled but I'm going to have to trade my car in for new one as I need reliable transportation for my children. All instances occurred after vehicle was driven, parked and starting attempts. Please look into this matter. It may have not recieved many complaints on this page, however, online blogs are full of same issue with an large amount of Hyundai owners.

11 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/24/2017

I bought this car used in June of this year. About a month after purchasing, I started having problems with the car not wanting to accelerate and then car losing power completely on interstate. My father came and the car started right up and drove fine. Two weeks later same thing. My mother came to get me and when she got there, there was no power to car but keys were stuck in on position and car was still in gear as I had to pull emergency brake to get the car to stop. The car would not start and we had the car towed to local Hyundai dealer. My mother told tow truck driver that battery would most likely be dead as the car had been sitting in on position waiting for tow and then trip to dealer. Dealer stated bad battery and car was out of gas. Although no gas was added to car but they performed all their tests and updates to ecm per manufacturer with car out of gas (but running). Replaced battery and came out of work not long after and car would not start. I hit steering wheel in frustration and tried again and car started. Drove it home, left it in accessory position, lost power. Did same thing as before with hitting steering wheel, started again. Recently moved away to college, drove it all day, went back to my parent's house for a couple hours went to leave and the keys would not turn (could not even get steering wheel unlocked), it sat overnight at my parents for at least one night maybe two while I drove my mother's car. The original dealer came to take it back and see if he could figure it out, started the first time he tried to start it. Turned it off and tried again and he could not get steering wheel to unlock and key to turn, waited a couple minutes and tried again and it has been running fine since. The dealer I bought it from is willing to let me trade the car back to him for something else if I can find something I want but I love my car.

12 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/18/2017

The engine of my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS failed to start the morning of 1/3/17 while parked in the driveway. I turned the key in the ignition numerous times without success. The dash lights would illuminate, but the car wouldn't start or even try to turn over. After appx. 15 attempts, it finally started. I bought a new battery hoping that would fix problem. However, the problem repeated on 1/18/17, again while parked in driveway. After roughly 50 attempts to start the car and trying to wiggle the gear shift, it finally started. I then drove to the dealership and left the car with them overnight. The following day I was advised by the service department that since they could not get the car to duplicate the problem or trigger any diagnostic codes, they could not repair it or replace any parts. Fortunately, to date I have been in safe places during daylight hours when my car failed to start. However, I may not always be so fortunate and could possibly be stranded in a very vulnerable location in the future. Out of the 430 complaints listed against the 2013 Elantra on the NHTSA website, roughly 7% of the owners reported experiencing this identical problem. A further search of the internet reveals many, many more such complaints. One might believe that could indicate the existence of a widespread problem; yet, it does not appear that the manufacturer has issued any recalls or service bulletins specific to my vehicle model to address/fix this engine failure.

13 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/02/2016

Push button start. Car will not start right away after depressing the start button. When start button is depressed, indicating lights on the dash will illuminate, and approximately 10 second later, the radio and the air conditioning will kick in. At this point I have approximately 10 seconds to attempt to start the car and 75% of the time the car will start; otherwise, I have to turn the car off and attempt to restart again. This issue has been going on for approximately two months now. Took it into the dealership and they stated they could not recreate the problem as the car started for them every time apparently and could not do anything to solve my issue, even though they admittedly tightened up terminals for the battery. The car seemed to start every single time for about a week after the visit, and now it's doing it again. Called Hyundai and they knew nothing about issue. I've resorted to taking video to help describe the issue to technicians, and the latest dealership basically told me that they still would not be able to use my video but would have to recreate the problem themselves. This is going to be really bad if I'm stuck in somewhere because my car won't start and Hyundai claiming they cant do anything about it.

17 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/23/2015

Intermittent start failures. Car fails to start several times a week. Had the battery tested and it checked ok. Seems to be related to the automatic transmission shifter. The shifter seems to think the car is not in park, but is is. Switching it back and forth out of park sometimes works, but not always. Very frustrating. Unreliable. Took it to the dealer and they "corrected a grounding anomaly". Failed to start again the next day. Online reports have been very helpful in seeing how widespread this problem is. If Hyundai doesn't recall this problem, their rising reputation will be dashed. I wish I had not bought this car.

18 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/22/2015

On November 8th, 2016, saint paul, mn, my car would not start up. No warning signals came on and just made a "clicking" noise". I called Hyundai's roadside assistance when they arrived he told me to try to start it up. The car then came on which was approx. A 45 minute wait. In October 2015- eagan, mn, I was driving on the highway, I felt dizzy, nauseous and had a panic attack. I tried pulling over to the side of the road, the car would not stop despite stepping on breaks, the car kept pulling toward the side of the grass that was surrounded with gravel. I ended up hitting and stopping at a guardrail. The driver side wheel was blown and along the drivers and passenger door was scratched, there was also some front end damage which got repaired. In approx. March 2015- west saint paul, I just got off the highway when my car lost power. I started it up, pressed on the gas and ended up rear ended the driver in front of me. In 2014, maplewood, mn,I was at a restaurant's drive-thru and my car lost all power and steering for about 5-10 minutes. I called Hyundai's roadside's assistance to report the incident. In 2014, eden prairie, mn, I was driving on the highway and my car completely lost power and the steering wheel locked up. I called Hyundai's roadside assistance to report the incidence. About 15 minutes later, the car started up and no longer needed roadside assistance's towing service.

19 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/02/2015

My 2014 Hyundai Elantra did not start on three separate occasions over the past month. The dash lights and indicators came on but the engine did not crank or make any sound. Eventually after multiple attempts over 10 minutes, the engine started. I am concerned that the car will not start at all and leave me stranded. On one other occasion after starting, the gear shift would not move out of the park position.

20 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

While the vehincle being in park and trying to start the vehicle it did not start. It does some clicking and after turning on and off the key the vehicle starts. It has aggravated more over the course of these past two weeks and its doing it almost every other time I try to start the engine. The dealer has checked the battery and also taken it to autozone and confirmed the battery is ok but the vechile still does not start. I have an appointment for this coming 9/21/15 for the dealer to take a look at it but reviewing all of the electrical complaints it seems that there is a common trend of affected vehicles with the same issue. Have not seen the experience of the vehilce stalling on me during the highway but because of the daily traffic I take to commute home-work I just hope I dont get into a situation where my safety gets compromised. Do not know how many complaints need to occurr before Hyundai does something to solve the issue and really prevent a major safety one.

Failure Date: 05/05/2015

I went out to start car and it would not start. . . I tried several times and finally held the key as far a it would go and it cranked. I took it to the Hyundai dealer and they kept it over night. They could find nothing wrong with it. Next month same thing happened only this time I could not start it. I called hyudai dealer and they towed the car and kept it for a week. The car started right back up for them and they could not find the problem. The battery is good and everything comes on like the radio and wipers but doesn't start. The only thing the tow guy did was to put the car in neutral to get it on the tow truck. When I went on line to find you all I saw several people with the same car having the same problem, my warranty gives out in a few hundred miles and I am afraid that when it doesn't start again I will not be covered. And I am afraid it will not start when I am at the beach or out of town or the store. I t is a very vulnerable place to be because I have children. Updated 09/15/lj.

27 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/05/2015

Car will not start. It just clicks and will not start. It is random, but progressively gets more frequent as the car gets older/more use. Potentially standing a driver wherever they are at the time it happens. It has already stranded my wife once. This is a safety issue during very hot or cold weather. Hyundai does not seem to care about fixing the issue, nor are they making any efforts whatsoever to remedy it. Dealers are not helping their customers solve the problem either. See the website below. This issue is very common. There needs to be a recall for this issue, as it is likely affecting tens of thousands of owners at the very least. A neutral switch or range switch seems to be the main culprit. . Read more...

Car would not start. After a few attempts with holding the key on start position it would start as normal. It was taken to local dealership who state the engine ground wires were corroded. It's a 2013 Elantra when asked what caused the corrosion , the dealership stated they didn't know but they have had 8 other vehicles with the same issue this month. I'd be concerned this could become a fire hazard and it cause the vehicle to shut off while running. Thank you for your time. Zach.

33 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/11/2014

My car was parked outside overnight and I used the key fob to unlock my car. I then tried to start the car but it would not start. I had my foot pressing on the brake and pushed the ignition button and the lights/radio would come on but the car made a click noise and would not crank over to start. I tried this 5 times before it started. It was not that cold so weather was not a factor. I then drove to work and at lunch the same thing happened. It took 5 tries before the car cranked over to start. The brake pedal seems to be locked and then finally it has some give to start the car. I had taken my car to the dealership 6 weeks prior for this same issue but they said they could not find a problem as it started for them every time. It is starting to now get frustrating.
