1 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/12/2015

I purchased my car in 2015. I was loving this car until I was on wet/bumpy roads. I applied the brakes to stop. The Hyundai started making a grinding noise. When I applied the brakes it felt like the brakes was going all the way to the floor. When it is snowing I can't drive the car because the brake gets locked up and makes a lot of noise. This car is dangerous to drive in inclement weather. Also this car suspension is horrible. You feel all the bumps in the road. Hyundai needs to do a recall on this car. Most of my problems with this car was driving in the city. Driving on wet roads coming to a stop or hitting a bump in the road. The car swerves and make aloud grabbing noise. Sounds like the brakes are coming up through the floor. I love the car but don't love the way it drives. I had to replace the front rotors and brake pad with a full alignment. This vehicle still drives the same way even when all this work was completed.

2 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Our Elantra began making grinding noises when we pressed on the brake pedal that sounded like the brakes or rotor were defective. When the shop inspected the car, they said they could not duplicate the noise, and told us the car was in perfect shape. Over the next few months, the noise became louder when braking, plus it began making a whump-whump-whump noise that appeared to be directly related to the speed and rotation of the wheels. The sound would increase when we steered the car to the right, and would decrease when we steered left. The whumps were barely audible at 5 mph, but were overly loud at 40 mph. I thought it was plastic trim fluttering in the wind, but could not find anything loose. When we took it to the shop again, I think in August, I told them the car was not drivable that they needed to find out what was causing the whump noises and the grinding noises when we applied the brakes. This time they found the problem was caused by the bolt holding the left wheel coming unscrewed. They tightened the bolt under warranty repair service, and the car has not made the whump noise or had grinding brakes since the repair. I doubt this problem was limited to one car in the fleet, and I believe Hyundai should have issued an advisory to their shop managers to be watching for this problem so that it would have been found and corrected the first time that we took the car in.

3 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

Grinding noise when applying brakes in 2012 Hyundai Elantra after just 22000 miles. Mechanic smooted rotors but said the calipers are not functioning properly and it would happen again. Happened a few months later and in checking online found literally thousands of similar complaints. Most of us are concerned that the brakes can't possibly be functioning properly. In particular I try to leave a great distance just in case a sudden stop is needed and the brakes don't work like they should. Every person on the forum is getting the same line from the Hyundai dealers, it's your rotors and pads, not covered by warranty, we are replacing our rotors and pads only to have them ruined within a few months. My independent mechanic (not affiliated with the Hyundai dealer) insists that the calipers are the problem, they are not functioning properly and are ruining the rotors and pads. The calipers just happen to cost $700 for the part alone, and I'm sure labor would be steep. In addition, if it was the calipers, those would be covered by our warranties. It really appears that Hyundai has bad brake calipers on it 2012 and 2013 Elantras and they are unwilling to acknowledge the problem and perhaps are hoping to put us all off until the calipers are no longer under warranty. My concern is there are a lot of us out there driving around like this and what happens when an urgent stop is needed and the brakes don't function properly. This could have very dire consequences.

Failure Date: 03/21/2014

Driving car on wet roads at 45 mph, applied breaks to slow down for a street light and the abs was gone. Car slid into the opposing lane and made a grinding noise due to the failure. Then the eps light came on and the power steering was gone. Close-call accident, very scary, and a lot of pain in my neck and arms from driving without the power steering.

7 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/14/2013

I was on my way to work, when I noticed there was a new warning on my dashboard and so when looking up what it means in my book, it pertains to my brakes!! when I called the dealer to schedule an appt about another issue I am having with the car, I told her about this one too. She said we need to get you in ASAP to have it looked at. I could tell by her tone, this was not a good thing. I expressed to her that I have a (19 mo old), of which I cannot have any major defaults with my car, especially when driving with her in it- which is all the time! I asked her if this was in conjunction with my brakes making a grinding noise and she said she didn't know. I told her I have only had the (new off the lot) for a year or more and have had a string of issues. I am not impressed to say the least!! this is minor in comparison to some, but the upholstery on my side on the right (floor board) has completely torn apart. It almost looks like someone had cut it, like when I brought my car in the last time to get worked on from this dealer. She assured me they would never cut the floor and I said what happened to it then and she said a poor job when made by Hyundai. Granted, they are going to replace it, but now I have a more important issue to attend to- my brakes. Bad upholstery is not going to put me or my daughter in danger, but bad brakes will! when I asked the dealer if any of my current and past issues with this car is normal, she said to be honest- no it is not! if I have to contact Hyundai, I will and I will not give up until my issues have been resolved.

8 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/08/2013

I had to stop moderately hard at 50 mph and when I did my brakes made a loud grinding noise and vibrated very rough. I found out there was a Hyundai TSB campaign for the brakes issued December 2012 and that they should have been replaced by the dealer before the car was sold but the dealership (key hundai in jacksonville, FL) neglected to replace the defective pads.

10 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

The brakes make horrible creaking and grinding noises when wet. Sometimes it will even cause the car to shake. I have contacted Hyundai several times and they do not take this serious. I have taken it to the dealership several times and they have not been able to fix it. I just took it in last week and they even tried to get me to pay 100 for a cleaning of the brake components, I feel I should not have to pay to fix a problem we have had since we bought the car new and have had it in several times and they have not been able to fix it. I am not confident driving the car now and clearly no one would want it buy it off us when it makes such horrible noises. I also believe it cannot be safe and will cause premature failure of the brake calipers and / or possible the ball joints or front steering suspension. I think they have a faulty design in the brake hydraulics and the differential pressures between the front and rear brakes are not right.

11 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

Had been hearing a grinding noise when braking especially when it would rain out and on the advice made an appt to take it to the dealer. On the way to the dealer the brakes gave out and my car hit into my husbands car that was driving in front of me to the dealer so he could drive me home. At first they said there was nothing wrong withthe brakes I insisted they keep it overnight and theysaid they would drive it when the car was cold. Thankfully it rained hard that night and even though they waited til the afternoon to drive it they were still able to hear the grinding although not nearly as loud as it would have been if they drove it in the morning. They said the rotors were building up corrosion so they would replace the brake pads. After researching this it seems to be a pretty common problem I intend to insist tomorrow they change the rotors too but the fact still remains that there is now extensive damage to the front end of my car. This is a new car and this should not be happening just 2 days prior my husband lost the brakes for a few seconds this is a potentially very hazardous situation.

12 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

There is an extremely loud grinding noise that keeps coming from my brakes. I was pulling up to a mailbox and I was on my cellphone and someone asked me what that noise was as it was so loud they could hear it! I brought it to the dealership and they said there was a little bit of rust on the rotor!! I just had the 7500 mile check up and got all green checks but 10 days later the grinding is even louder than before. I dread even putting on my brakes and I am not confident if people jump out in front of me that they will respond properly. I purchased this car brand new and went on to carcomplaints. Com and there are a lot of people saying the same things with as low as 20 miles on the car. Something is definitely wrong here. This is my fifth brand new car in the last ten years so I know this is not something that should be going on.

13 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/09/2012

Since I bought the car late Feb. 2011 (after they release the new modeled cars in the last days of the previous year). . . I have complained and inquired about an occurrence that happens with the brakes on occasion that seems to be triggering: vsm, esc, tcs, abs, brake assist and/or ebd safety systems under normal road, temperatures, speeds, brake pressure. There has been at brake delays, very loud grinding noise, and at times provided a violent push back and pumping unlike any normal abs system and those times were few but again under normal conditions no sudden breaking. The grinding sounds and feels a bit like a second after you apply pressure to the brake an anchor drops on the road and bounces and grinds against mental and the pavement. It feels like an empty brake pad (but is not) and stop as if one also. However not all the time and when the brakes are normal it feels safe. However, it happens even slowly parking in my flat smooth driveway sometimes (no sand I check everytime). I have avoided many accidents just barely when this is triggered and it most often causing double the stopping time. I end up into the intersecting streets beyond a stop sign or stop light by about half a car length. It doesn't always kick in right away with brake pressure but trips it up a second later and you have to almost trick the brake and steering to get control and stop in time. There has been too much of a process in an effort to correct it, other issues found, and multiple accident caused from it one of which cause a hospital visit and an injury leaving me will a hematoma and crooked smile still. I need help and more space to explain. Please email me for details.
