1 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/19/2021

I have already reported my problem regarding the recall #107096 for suspension front spring coil. Nhtsa campaign id 15v629000; date: oct. 7, 2015 if a front coil spring fractures, it may contact the tire, possibly puncturing it, increasing the risk of a crash. . . And wanted to update since I have since contacted Hyundai. This was their reply: campaigns and recalls are VIN specific, therefore, your 2011 Elantra may have been produced in the same time period as the affected vehicles but at a different factory. Not all Elantra's for this time period were recalled. Only the affected VIN's. My vehicle was manufactured during the affected dates, but they are apparently only VIN specific. My concern is that I had the same problem and the coil spring fractured. . . If others outside the VIN specific are also experiencing the problem maybe they need to expand the recall for this potentially deadly problems and would like to warn others to get this checked even though Hyundai will not cover the problem.

2 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/19/2021

While driving my husband heard a loud pop. Immediately the front passenger tire went flat which caused severe loss of control. Thankfully he was on a local road with no other cars at the time. Apparently a coil spring fractured off and slashed the tire. This spring still looked brand new yet it just sheered off which must be some type of defect in manufacturing of the part. While researching this I found a recall #107096 for suspension front spring coil yet my 2011 Elantra does not show up for this recall? this defect in the spring coil could have caused catastrophic effects if we were driving faster on highway. I haven't yet been able to contact Hyundai in regards to this yet but you should be aware. . . . This defect which could be deadly depending on the circumstances. I now have to pay $1000 to repair the struts and coils on both sides. I'm not sure why Hyundai has not recalled all cars, but this must be addressed for safety.

5 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/25/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. While driving 25 mph over a bump in the road, the coil spring fractured and ruptured the front passenger tire. The contact inspected the vehicle himself and found that pieces of the coil spring penetrated the front passenger tire. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v629000 (suspension). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 167,000.

6 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/21/2019

Was driving the car and felt something rubbing the tire. Took it to a mechanic and he said the driver's side front coil spring broke and dug a groove in the tire. Had it replaced and noticed there was a recall for this year make and model. It was for VIN numbers that started with kmhd which mine does. I called Hyundai customer care and they said it wasn't for my specific VIN number. I explained that it was same vehicle and not just coincidence that it's exactly what happened as in the recall. They told me to submit a bunch of documents showing repair bill, proof of payment and proof of ownership and have the repair inspected by a Hyundai dealer. After jumping through all these hoops for possible reimbursement, I was told they wont reimburse because it's VIN specific. (then why did they make me go through all that?) if the vehicle had been driven much longer it would have punctured the tire. Furthermore if my son had been on the highway doing 55mph and that happened, I believe it would have veered the car into oncoming traffic. I sure hope no one gets injured or worse because they didn't recall all of the 2011 Hyundai Elantras and only certain ones. I will keep fighting until I get reimbursed and will never purchase another Hyundai vehicle. It was for campaign133.

While traveling on a city street at about 20 mph, I hit a pothole with my 2012 Hyundai Elantra and the car came to a stop, afterward the tire burst. Noise was a loud rubbing sound coming from the front passenger wheel. A defective strut coil/spring ripped and cut through the inner side wall of the tire. Aaa towed my car to one of their repair shops. Total cost of new struts and tire was $895.

8 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

10 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

Front driver's side suspension coil broke while driving down a city street during the winter time at low speed. This seems like the same (or at least very similar) issue as 15v629000, which covers the same make, model, and manufacture date as my car, but my VIN is not in that recall.

11 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/13/2019

Vehicle front coil springs failed while going over a speed bump at low speed of less than 10 mph. Coil springs fractured as seen in the photos attached to this writing. Coil spring failure follows a similar pattern to the coil springs in the Hyundai Elantra 2011, which was recalled over this issue. I believe this faulty product has made its way into the Hyundai Elantra 2012 supply chain. Here is a link to a website listing other Hyundai 2012 owners having the same front coil spring issue. . 12 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/10/2019

The front suspension coil springs snapped and ruptured both my front tires. It seems the front coil springs get brittle in the winter and actually splintered off when they snapped, this caused the rupture to my tires. I was very lucky to have been in a parking garage, going five mph, when the damage happened. It was merely caused by driving down a parking ramp. So, it wasn't caused by some tremendous trauma to the car or accident. This is a serious issue, and now each side will cause $1036. 00 to fix (because I have to replace each side tire as well). The issue would have been exacerbated had I been on a highway when this happened, and could have been very dangerous.

13 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/30/2019

Front coil spring fractured and contacted tire. Luckily I was pulling out of my parking spot. By the looks of the damage to the tire, I am very fortunate I have been like this and not at any level of speed. The following morning I looked into the problem and found an article by edmond in may 2015 that talked about your organization recalling Hyundai alandra's for front coil spring problems. From the article this is exactly what happened to my car. I called Hyundai corporation they said it was not up for a recall. Two calls to dealerships I was again told there was no recall. Please force Hyundai to recall this potentially deadly accident waiting to happen at their expense. 14 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/20/2018

On Sunday, may 20th, 2018 at around 2:00 p. M. I was driving through warwick city park with my wife and son. Upon approaching a speed bump, I slowed to about 5 to 10 mph. Immediately after going over the speed bump my tire blew out and the car shook violently. I was towed via flatbed to new england tire car care centers on warwick Ave, warwick, ri. The mechanical inspection findings were as follows: flat tire on front passenger side ripped off the rim cause by fractured coil spring. New england tire replaced the struts/coil springs and tire. The total bill was $1,400. 99. On July 5th, 2018, I discovered that Hyundai preformed a safety recall on 28,157 cars with the same issue that occurred to my vehicle. The recall was named recall #133 and began on January 6th, 2016. I was never notified of this recall. A quote from Hyundai recall #133 stats: consequence: if a front coil spring fractures, it may contact the tire, possibly puncturing it, increasing the risk of a crash. the summary of the recall states that Hyundai motor America is recalling certain model year 2011 Elantra vehicles manufactured November 12, 2010, to March 31, 2011. this is a total of 140 days including 28,157 vehicles. My vehicle is a Hyundai Elantra 2011 manufactured April 16th, 2011. I realized that the reason my vehicle was not included in recall #133 was that I missed the end date (March 31, 2011) by 16 days. I believe my vehicle should have been included in this recall given the reasonable fact that my front coil spring fractured, contacted the tire, and punctured it just as Hyundai recall #133 states which affected 28,157 other vehicles. I filed a small claims civil suit against kyung soo lee, ceo of Hyundai motor America. When the orange county sheriff's office attempted to serve the court summons, Hyundai motor America stated that they do not allow services to employees onsite.

15 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/10/2018

Drivers side front coil spring collapsed. No recall notice on this but see plenty of chatter on the web of similar complaints. Fortunate that it did not puncture tire but rubbed on inside of tire causing concern of future blowout so replaced front coils and struts and tire!.

16 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/11/2018

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. While driving 15 mph, the front driver's side tire deflated without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the coil springs were faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.

17 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/19/2017

The front coil spring fractured while I was driving on a city street and came into contact with my tire. The coil started to rub against my tire until it was punctured. I think this may relate to the recall for the 2011 Elantra (15v629000).

18 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/10/2017

My husband backed the car up 3 inches in our driveway and the front coil spring broke, shot through the tire and the tire exploded. We bought our 2012 Elantra in October 2011 and apparently there was a recall of the 2011 Elantras for this exact issue for cars that are owned in the "salt belt" / cold weather states which is where we live, but the recall was only issued for Elantras manufactured between 11/12/10 to 3/31/11. Mine is a 2012 which was purchased in October 2011and manufactured sometime between March 2011 and October 2011. I highly doubt that Hyundai, which apparently didn't know about the issue until an increase in warranty claims on the issue started an investigation of it in 2014, changed the front coil springs they were using to manufacture the same car just 1 "year" newer between the end of the recalled vehicle date and the manufacture date of my 2012 Elantra. I now have to replace both, relatively new tires, and front struts and springs. I believe the recall should include more vehicle years since there would have been no reason for them to change the parts they were using between 2011 and 2012 models if they were unaware of a problem. Also, a 2012 Elantra that was possible manufactured in the recall time frame should also be included in the recall.

19 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/05/2017

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. While pulling into a parking area, the contact heard an abnormal noise. The contact exited the vehicle, inspected the front end, and noticed that the front drivers side tire went flat. The tire was unable to retain air. A towing company inspected the area and determined that the front driver's side coil spring fractured. The dealer indicated that the vehicle was excluded from the manufacturer recall and provided no solution. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who replaced the front driver's side coil spring. The recall information was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 23,000.

20 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/15/2017

The front passenger side coil spring broke in my driveway, puncturing the tire. There is an open recall on this part for elanta's manufactured from Nov 2010 till March 2011 in states that use salt, the part can quickly erode and break. Hyundai is refusing to fix the problem saying that my car VIN is not included in the recall. I purchased the car brand new, it has 85,000 miles. The car documentation states that the parts were manufactured in korea. I feel that this should be covered under the recall. Hyundai knows there is a problem with that part and are refusing to fix the problem. If I had been driving on the highway when the part broke it could have caused an accident.

21 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/26/2016

The front coil spring on my Elantra broke as I backed up out of my driveway and punctured my tire. There is a recall on this issue Hyundai recall #133 NHTSA campaign #1sv629000. I have contacted multiple dealers and Hyundai customer care as to why my vehicle does not apply to this recall even though my car meets all the criteria. They could not give me an answer and I was told there is nothing they can do.

22 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/12/2016

The front drivers side coil spring snapped. There is an open recall on this part for elanta's manufactured from Nov 2010 till March 2011 in states that use salt as the part can quickly erode and break. Mine was manufactured 12/23/10 and has been registered in new york since at least 2013. Hyundai is refusing to fix the problem saying that my car does not meet the criteria of the recall because it was only cars manufactured in korea. My garage also believed it was because of the recalled part and submitted a claim to Hyundai and Hyundai came back still refusing to cover it because of excessive miles and that I am the 2nd owner (not even 74,000 miles on the car and other side coil absolutely fine). My vehicle was parked in my driveway when the part broke. I am having a Hyundai certified garage replace the part but I feel that this should be under Hyundai's responsibility as they already know there is a problem with that part and are trying to find loopholes to avoid fixing the problem.

23 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/20/2016

Big problem with the front coil spring. Mine broke and punctured the new tire I had installed this year. The spring broke in half. I was going over a speed bump leaving a baseball stadium when all this occurred.

24 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

25 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/10/2016

Front left coil spring broke after going over a pothole at very low speed (about 15mph). I've recently learned that many 2011 Elantras in salt belt states/areas had a recall on front coil springs after similar issues. I'm concerned that the front coil springs in my year make/model (2012 Elantra, also in a salt belt state) has the same issue and should be investigated for a recall.

26 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/15/2016

Our vehicle is just outside of the production window that applies to Hyundai recall 133 regarding fractured coil springs. Our right front coil spring broke, resulting in the puncturing of the tire. Both us and the previous owner of the vehicle live and have used the vehicle in the defined snow/salt region. The vehicle impacted a pothole. Immediate inspection showed no damage to tire or wheel. Driver continued on to work, parked, and at the end of the workday began to drive home. After turning a corner, an audible "grinding" was noted, and driver stopped, looking under the vehicle for lodged debris. Second motorist stopped to assist, and an attempt to move the vehicle was made, at which point it was noted that the suspension was "off", and they believed a portion of the braking system was resting on the tire. Driver proceeded to attempt to remove the vehicle from the roadway, and the turning of the vehicle resulted in the fractured coil spring coming in contact with the right front tire, lacerating it. Recall 133 covers models manufactured through March 31, 2011. Our manufacture date is June 20, 2011.

27 Front Suspension Coil Spring problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/21/2015

When driving over a speed bump in a mall. ,I heard a noise from the front of car. Looked at front of car did not see anything wrong and proceeded to drive it. It made a funny noise and you could smell burning rubber and smoke started to come from front drivers side wheel compartment. Called a tow truck and the mechanic said looks like the front coil spring broke. I was wandering if you have had any complaints on this year as I know the 2011 had a fracturing problem with the front coil springs. This just happened today 11-21-15 and is at a repair facility to be looked at on Monday when they open for business.
