1 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/20/2018

After an oil change at a Hyundai dealer, I did a quick acceleration from the dealership onto a busy road. The car immediately loss almost all power, with heavy white smoke coming out of the rear of the car. I immediately pulled to the side of the road. The car smelled likeke burning oil/a very hot engine. I parked the car and walked back to the dealership. They explained the problem on oil in the intake manifold and it was sucked into the engine during acceleration. They stated that they have seen this problem before. I bought the car new and this is the first time that I had this problem. It was fortunate that when I pulled out into traffic I had enough space that I did not get rear-ended, since it was a busy road. My vehicle has 33575 mile and up to now, no problems. I went on the Hyundai form and this is a common problem. It is a safety problem. Any loss of acceleration when needed is dangerous.

4 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/24/2009

On 10/24/09 I was driving my car for approximately an hour and a half when I noticed a slight jerking feeling. It repeated once or twice. Later when driving home, after driving for about a half an hour it started up again. Then about an hour later it stalled at a red light, I hardly made it home. I took it to the mechanic and it wasn't displaying the problem. It started up the next day and the check engine light came on. It pulled a po 420 code. I change the O2 sensor, didn't fix it check engine light back on same code. I changed my mid cat converter didn't fix it, light back on same code. . . My mechanic thinks we should change upper cat converter, I call the dealer. They say the upper cat is connected to the manifold which means I'm still cover under the 100k warranty. Mind you I had my manifold changed at 72k because the check engine light had gone on 18months earlier (I hadn't thought anything of it because it was under federal emissions warranty. ) now I'm at 99k and need a new manifold???? so the dealer replaces the manifold, still not fixed. Break down on side of the road. Dealer says it's my problem, they fixed it!!! back to my mechanic po 420 again. He thinks the old upper cat blew out the new mid cat before we replaced it. It's under warranty so I wait a week for the part to come in. . . You guessed it still not fixed! I'm bringing it back to my mechanic tomorrow and calling the owner of the dealership. It's been 7 weeks, $900 and my car is still broken.

7 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2000 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/11/2008

I thought my muffler had a hole in it so I took to a shop and they told me there was nothing wrong with my muffler. To another shop and told I have a cracked manifold. I think it's absurd that a 2000 model car could go through 2 manilfolds in 7 1/2 years. Was at the dealership on 10/09/03 reporting the exhaust system was noisy. Was told it was not muffler but was a cracked manifold. Luckily it was repaired under warranty. That was less than 5 years ago. Sounds like a big problem to me. I can understand one manifold getting cracked. . . But two in less than 4 1/2 years. This car is driven less than six miles round trip to work a day. It's not like I'm out tearing up the town all the time in the car.

8 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/17/2005

My 1997 Hyundai/elantra GLS has a cracked exhaust manifold that was detected by my husband, the car has 98,600. Miles and out of warrant, but it has to be fixed. It could be a health problem if you are traveling long distances, and do not know the manifold is cracked. We travel a lot of miles ,now my husband knows why he was so exhausted last trip. We just want someone to know this.

9 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2000 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/18/2005

My wife purchased a 2000 Hyundai Elantra VIN#[xxx] from brown Hyundai of toledo OH. On 4/18/05 she brought the car to brown Hyundai at 63,000 miles due to a notice about possible for cracks forming in the exhaust manifold, specifically TSB 05-01-001. No replacement was made at that time. Recently, I noticed an existing crack in the exhaust manifold and performed some research on the internet about the problem. I am sure you are aware how common of a problem this has been as there are numerous complaints on various automotive forums, the NHTSA, and various states' department of consumer protection. I had the vehicle recently (10/08/12) inspected at voss Hyundai of centerville OH who has confirmed the existing crack. At 125,000 miles the car is passed its powertrain warranty. Simply because it was not visibly evident in 2005 does not mean the manifold was up to Hyundai's quality standards. Exhaust manifolds are cast iron or steel and are not a moving part subject to friction. Therefore, I cannot accept that this current problem is the result of standard or expected wear-and-tear but caused by a pre-existing defect that has surfaced over time. 10 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/09/2005

Vehicle was being inspected for an engine check light illuminating while driving. Dealer informed the consumer that the exhaust manifold cracked on the weld. It needed to be replaced.

11 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/07/2004

I have read many of the complaints about the Hyundai. I've eliminated practically all the same complaints about the engine performance by tuning the engine every 30 to 35 thousand miles. The gas mileage and performance has been very acceptable. Yes I too have had to replace the manifold, mas air sensor, and other small maintenance parts. The only thing I haven't been able to repair is when I'm setting at a stop and idling, the engine tends to overheat. But when I began to drive it quickly cools back down. My Hyundai now has approximately 230,000 miles and is still in service but still overheats. Any suggestions?.
