2 Accelerator Stuck problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

While merging into traffic from a stop sign, I briefly pressed the gas pedal nearly all the way down. The car accelerated beyond the 45 mph speed limit after releasing the pedal. I pressed the brakes as hard as I could but the car continued to accelerate. I panicked because I was heading for a stop light. My wife and I were seconds away from a high speed collision. I shifted the car into the neutral position with the brakes fully applied. The engine raced up to high rpms. I looked at the pedal and it was depressed nearly all the way down without my foot on it. I put my foot under the pedal and lifted up. The pedal sprung all the way up and the engine rpms went back to idle values. The car quickly slowed. I was able to stop the car just before the intersection. I pulled off the road to examine the pedal. The driver’s side car mat had slipped off its retention post and had moved about 4 inches forward so it was under the gas pedal. The end of the car mat was curled up so it was elevated about 1 inch above the floor carpeting. With the engine off, I pushed the gas pedal down by hand and it got caught under the car mat again. After removing the mat, I pushed the gas pedal down many times (engine off) and it always worked correctly. The driver’s side car mat retention post system has never worked well. The floor mat frequently sides off the post, and the mat moves forward. The used mat is now stiff enough to hold the gas pedal down if the pedal is pushed under the curled end of the mat. A secure car mat locking device should have been part of the original mat retention system. Hyundai should fix this problem. I am not completely sure whether some other mechanical or electrical problem had contributed to the stuck gas pedal. Frankly, we are frightened of the car that nearly killed us, and don’t look forward to driving it again even without the car mat.

6 Accelerator Stuck problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/24/2013

While accelerating to pass a car, my accelerator got stuck and I couldn't get my car to stop with the brakes. This had happened once before, a couple of years ago and I was able to get it 'unstuck' by pumping brake and accelerator. I took the car in to be checked and the dealer said they couldn't 'recreate' the issue and that it was probably my floor mats. I basically chaulked it up as a fluke, although I never agreed with the floor mat scenario. When it happened this time, I tried pumping brakes, accelerator, downshifting, etc. And the car slowed down some, but wouldn't actually stop until I ran into the back of another car. Even then, the engine was revving and the only way I could get it to stop was to turn it off. I was too afraid to drive it again so it was towed and is being checked for mechanical malfunction. I see that there are numerous complaints about this issue and don't understand why there hasn't been a recall!!.

7 Accelerator Stuck problem of the 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/30/2012

My mother died in a vehicle accident with no other vehicles involved. Her Santa Fe went through a "t" intersection without stopping crossing highway, went airborne over hillside and struck a tree. Severed spine, chest trauma and shattered ankle. There are no skids marks at the scene airbags were deploy but when? steering column is crushed in and steering wheel was bent inward. The road she was on is a residential side street. There is a 100 feet downgrade but straight as you approach the stop sign. The "t" intersection is a two lane not well traveled road. She drove this road many times before. What makes a vehicle travel at a high rate of speed in a 100 feet straight away, go through a stop sign get airborne after crossing highway? acceleration sticking? why is there so much damage to steering column if airbag went off? could the accelerator get stuck and my mother panic and tried to stop car by stepping on brakes making a panic decision, not knowing to take vehicle out of gear or turning vehicle off? was there enough time. I lost my mother and after reading all the problems, I think these and all Hyundai vehicles should be looked at!.

8 Accelerator Stuck problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/14/2011

I was backing out of a driveway when the accelorator began racing. I was able to stop the vehicle and put it in drive while my foot was on the brake, when the car raced forward, accelerating out of control. I had my feet on the brakes but the brakes did not work and the car continued accelerating forward crashing into a neighbors yard and demolishing their landscaping before I managed to stop the vehicle and turn it off. I was not seriously injured, but it could have ended much differently as I crossed a main highway before the car came to rest. Because I have floor mats other than those issued by Hyundai, I was told by the dealership that the floor mat caused the gas pedal to become stuck in the down position. This is not what happened and would also not explain why the brakes did not work at all.

9 Accelerator Stuck problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/07/2011

The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the accelerator pedal became stuck as the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed. The contact pumped on the accelerator pedal until it released and the vehicle resumed normal operation. The vehicle was previously taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing but the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 45,000. Updated 03/23/11 the consumer stated the dealer replaced the throttle body on 03/16/11. Updated 03/24/11.

10 Accelerator Stuck problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/30/2009

I have twice experienced a dangerous occurrence during acceleration. I press the gas pedal but when I take my foot off to decelerate, the car continues to gain speed and braking has no effect. In each instance, the only way to make the car slow down or stop was to put it in neutral and find a safe place to allow it to coast until I could turn the engine off. The last occurrence I was going 75 mph on I-35, had to swerve to left shoulder to avoid being sideswiped. My 5 year old granddaughter was in the car with me. I took my vehicle to the dealership for repair and was told both times that the pedal must be sticking on the floor mat. After the second experience, I looked for similar stories on the internet and found 5 recent postings of the same issue happening to other people. If more than a couple of people report the same issue, shouldn't Hyundai make a dedicated effort to identify and correct it immediately or recall the vehicle altogether? I do not believe the mat is causing the problem because the second time it occurred I visually checked the mat and even pulled it backwards with my feet while trying to find a way out of traffic. In addition, if the pedal was sticking on the mat, why would the only corrective action be to place the car in neutral or to turn the engine completely off ? theoretically, wouldn't the accelerator still be "stuck on the mat" in this instance? last and most importantly, even if the claim of the mats being the problem is accurate, these mats are the same that came with the vehicle when purchased. I assume they are produced and/or approved by the manufacturer as part of the finished product and, therefore, Hyundai is still the liable party for any accidents caused by this issue. I have removed the mats entirely from my car but I am petrified to drive it. Does Hyundai really want to wait until a tragedy occurs before considering corrective action?.
