1 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/22/2020

The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the vehicle began to accelerate independently without warning. Due to the unintended acceleration, the contact had to depress her brake pedal to the floor board as well as use her emergency hand brake in order to slow down the vehicle. Once the contact eased her foot of the brake pedal, the vehicle began to accelerate. Due to the force applied to her brakes, smoke began to emit from vehicle's exhaust pipe. The contact had to coast the vehicle until a parking lot until the vehicle came to a complete stop. The contact then turned off the vehicle and called titus-will Hyundai 2255 carriage loop sw, olympia, wa 98502 where they informed her to have the vehicle towed to there dealer. Once the vehicle was towed to the dealer, she received a call from the dealer stated that they were unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,700. Invalid VIN.

2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/04/2020

On March 4, 2020, heading home at night on a curvy mountain road my car (2006 Hyundai Santa Fe) suddenly jerked, started to accelerate to over 80 miles hour. At the same time half of the panel light behind part of the rpm's and half behind the mph went out; the rest of the panel was still lit up; I was heading down the curvy road accelerating heading quickly towards an 18 wheeler when I tried to brake, my brake pedal would not move and my car kept accelerating (I was not stepping on the gas pedal). I quickly dropped my car into low gear and maneuvered around the 18-wheeler and trying the brakes, the emergency brakes, and as quickly as it started up, it stopped, and my car started to drive normal (except the panel lights). On my way home (March 5th), it happened again while driving down the curvy mountain road at night! as I begin descending the curvy road (driving 40mph in the right lane), my car suddenly began accelerating again up to 90mph! there were not as many people on the road, so I was able to maneuver it by dropping down into low gear and as I began ascending the mountain road, the unintended acceleration stopped, and the car drove normal. Each incident lasted about 5 minutes. On March 6, 2020, I took my car to the mechanic and ran a diagnostic and did not find a cause. He told me to call the Hyundai dealership to see if there were any recalls. The dealership informed me to contact Hyundai headquarters, which I did. I reported my issue and made a claim on March 6, 2020. I was told to take my car to capital Hyundai dealership and Hyundai headquarters would send a forensic engineer out to investigate the issue. They told me to not drive my car and have it towed. I received a call from Hyundai headquarters informing me the dealership ran a diagnostic on my car and did not find anything wrong and could not duplicate the unintended acceleration.

4 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/30/2019

Vehicle experienced sudden unintended acceleration as we slowed and turned into a parking space at a local restaurant parking lot. Engine reved, car accelerated rapidly, brakes did no hold and the vehicle plowed into and then on top of a safety barrier stopping just short of a chain link fence guarding a set of large propane tanks. Police were called to scene, he took pictures. Car was towed to dealership collision center.

5 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/14/2017

In 8/2015 we experienced an occurrence of sudden, unintended acceleration on a city street while driving. My wife was able to stop the vehicle by hard braking and shutting the engine off. She was able to drive it home and we had it towed to the Hyundai dealer. They diagnosed the problem: ". . . Checked and found vehicle throttle body to have a poor responce (sic). " they replaced the throttle body for a charge of $597. 94, informing me that it wasn't covered under the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. The problem recurred today (7/14/2015), again while driving on a city street. When I called the service manager to report the incident I was told to drop the vehicle off and they'd look at it. I'll have it towed in to the shop, as this is not a condition with which I'd not care to drive. The fact that this condition recurred indicates that the problem is generic in nature, and that Hyundai is not considering it either generic or serious enough to address. I believe that there will be other vehicles experiencing the issue now that the "fleet" of Hyundai Santa Fe suvs is aging but still in service. I believe that it is essential that Hyundai address the issue systematically before serious injuries occur.

6 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/07/2017

Contact owned 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe sport utility vehicle. At 2pm on July 7, 2017, driver experienced a sudden, uncommanded acceleration that caused a fatal crash that resulted in the death of the driver and two passengers. Manufacturer was informed about the subject incident. Hyundai is aware of a statistically significant number of unintended accelerations with this generation of vehicles. Other public voqs and private consumer complaints support the contacts allegations that the vehicle had a catastrophic failure with the electronic throttle control system. The 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe was not equipped with available Smart pedal brake throttle override technology. In 2012, Hyundai admitted that "with virtually all cars using electronic throttle control today, there remains the remote possibility for an unforeseen electronic throttle control malfunction, causing a vehicle to accelerate contrary to driver input. Although very unlikely due to various built-in electronic safety protocols, unforeseen circumstances could still exist that could cause this type of malfunction. Hyundai introduced `this critical safety technology' on 100 percent of its new models anticipating the government might mandate it sometime in the future. with Hyundai's brake pedal throttle override capability, any brake pedal input by the driver, even with a runaway throttle condition, completely overrides any throttle malfunction, stated the director of certification and compliance affairs for Hyundai's american technical center, inc. (hatci), said in a statement. it is no longer possible to have increasing engine power once the brake pedal is depressed by the driver. This adds a reassuring, incremental safeguard of control for Hyundai drivers. per consumer affairs, local police agency suggests that Hyundai accelerated on its own before fatal crash. Special crash investigation.

7 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/22/2017

Unintended acceleration while turning on to a busy intersection, two other instances of unintended acceleration on city streets. Have taken to dealership could not find problem. Very leary of driving car.

8 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/07/2016

Pulled into parking space in a parking lot very slowly. Vehicle was almost parked. Steering wheel was turned to the left. Vehicle suddenly accelerated, continued to rev and would not stop right away with multiple applications of the brake. It rode up onto a cement handicap ramp and its railing at the head of the space . Not injured, no airbag deployment, car sustained damage to front and undercarriage. Vehicle had less than 1200 miles on it. No one I told was convinced that I didn't step on the gas and assumed that my foot must have slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal. I was ready to believe it myself and owned that it must have been completely my fault. After stumbling (and I mean stumbling-wasn't looking for anything like this) across reviews and comments that describe exactly what happened to me, I feel vindicated.

9 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/26/2016

"sudden unintended acceleration" in Hyundai's, specifically Santa Fe. My wife has had this happen to her while driving her Hyundai Santa Fe three times now and the Hyundai dealership insists there has been no indication on the computer codes and that Hyundai does not have this problem. Therefore as far as they are concerned "sudden unintended acceleration" on her Santa Fe never happened.

10 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/14/2016

While at a stop in a construction zone, my foot was on the brake, when the vehicle suddenly accelerated into the vehicle in front of me. Although my foot was planted hard on the brake, the engine continued racing, and it felt like my car was going to push his car down the street! I shifted into park and turned the car off. Luckily there was only $4,000 worth of damage to my car, and no one was hurt. I refused to drive it, and had it towed to the dealer. They said the computer showed no malfunction, and it had to be driver error. Three months later, it did it again to a lesser degree, in an open area. I turned the car off again, and it was fine until yesterday. It has been 4 months since that last incident, but this one even was worse than the first. Only thing is, now I know to put all my weight on the brake, shift to neutral and turn the car off as fast as I can. This one frightened me so badly, I will not drive it again. It is going to sit at the dealer until they find out what to do. I cannot in good conscience drive it, sell it or even trade it in until I know it is safe! every time it happened, the car was on a city street, stationary, and heading straight. The engine revs up so loud, it sounds like an airplane! yesterday I could tell the people in the car stopped next to me heard it and looked at me! I have owned this Santa Fe since it was brand new, and people tell me it looks like a new car. I keep up with the recommended maintenance and always take it to the dealer for service. Until last July, it has been an excellent car. The accident I had with it was the only accident I have had in 50 years of driving! please give me some ideas on what to tell the dealer to replace, repair or disconnect. Thanks for your help!.

11 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/16/2016

Four separate incidents within a 30 day period at higher speeds (>65 mph on a freeway) of unintended acceleration, remediated by shifting into neutral and braking hard without pumping. These actions disengaged the acceleration without having to come to a complete stop and turning the ignition off. Unintended acceleration occurred again, in the latest incident while traveling at 40 mph on a city street, however car would not come to a complete stop even with full weight on the brake, and while shifting into neutral solved the immediate acceleration problem, the ignition had to be turned off to bring the vehicle to a full stop. Driver almost wrecked several cars while trying to Dodge traffic as car accelerated very rapidly. This could have been had a tragic ending but fortunately only resulted in a mechanics' visit.

12 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/12/2015

The vehicle so far has had two instances of uncontrolled acceleration, not just sudden but while driving and performing a passing maneuver or need to accelerate quickly the transmission will get stuck on a gear, pressing the brake or shifting to manual mode, attempting to shift up or down or back to d or n will not stop the acceleration. I just kept my foot on the brake, put hazards on, turned off the engine (left key in accessories) and then coasted to the shoulder. The minute I turned the engine off I gained stop control, prior, mashing on the brake wasn't stopping the car. Once I coasted to the side of the road, I waited a minute or so, carefully restarted the car and things were back to normal. The first time this happened the transmission seemed be stuck on 5th gear, but when I shifted from d to manual and back the acceleration returned to normal. The second time this has happened, the transmission seemed to be stuck on 3rd, the initial description above is about the 2nd instance. Taking the vehicle to dealer and will avoid rabbit starts or initiating any rapid acceleration, which seems to be where the transmission or some sensor is getting bad data. My guess it's the throttle body positioning sensor. Although I would assume that if the computer/transmission experience a bad signal or loss of signal from a sensor that the default action would be to shut off. . . Not lock in a gear with no means to stop other than shutting off the engine.

21 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/08/2013

I had just pulled into the driveway of a house I own that I rent; I was there to meet my tenants to discuss a couple of repairs that needed to be done in the house. I was slowing the car with my foot on the brake as I approached the end of the driveway by the side door of the house. Then I heard a sudden, extremely loud engine noise that sounded like the engine revving very fast and the car suddenly accelerated. I was propelled forward about 50 feet into the back yard and crashed into some lilac bushes directly ahead of me and into the steep dirt bank behind the bushes, which stopped the car. There is no garage and the driveway ends where the lawn begins. The front end of the car is quite damaged and the vehicle is presently in the dealer's repair garage. On the internet, my son found many reports of incidents of sudden acceleration for the Hyundai Santa Fe for my model year and for other recent years and he suggested I file this report with the NHTSA.

24 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/25/2013

While attempting to accelerate on an interstate to pass a vehicle, the accelerator pedal became stuck and the vehicle quickly sped up to 80 mph in a matter of seconds. Thankfully due to recent accelerator issues/recalls for other manufactures, I was able to shift the vehicle into neutral. The engine was pegged at max rpms while I frantically tried to get over through the lanes with the car in neutral. With three children aboard, this was a very harrowing experience. I was ultimately able to reach down, grab the accelerator pedal, and yank it back. After doing this, it again drove normally. I immediately looked at the pedal, floor mat, and carpet once arriving home. It is clearly obvious that the floor carpet itself (not the mat, the actual vehicle's carpeting) just under the pedal has hardened and developed a bulge such that the pedal will get stuck in it if depressed to far. This was brought to the immediate attention of the Hyundai dealership who indicated the warranty was no longer valid as the vehicle was past 60k miles (75k), and a call placed to Hyundai USA again yielded the same results, that the owner would need to pay $1400 to replace the flooring. There is clearly a design flaw in the floor carpet and raised section directly under the accelerator pedal that lead to this unintended acceleration, putting my safety at risk, and Hyundai is willing to hide behind the warranty to avoid keeping its once loyal customer safe.

25 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/19/2013

My moms Santa Fe has sped out of control several times in the last three months. The last incident caused injuries because the air bag failed to deploy. The first incident was in a parking lot where the car had unintended acceleration and crashed into several cars. Second incident was on the road where car sped up and she turned it off. The third was backing out of a shopping center parking lot where the car rapidly accelerated in reverse hitting a car and then tried to put in neutral but went into drive instead. She hit a post and the front end wrapped around the post but air bag did not deploy causing injury. State farm and many attorneys won't touch this case because of the costs involved to sue such a large corporation.

26 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/06/2013

I backed out of a parking spot and made contact with something which I could not see from my rear view or side view mirrors. Later, when the emergency workers were loading me into the ambulance, I would see that the object was a low, cement pole, which protected a fire hydrant directly behind the parking spot I pulled out of. As I put the vehicle in gear (drive) with my foot on the brake, to pull away from whatever I backed in to, the engine revved and the vehicle accelerated on its own. The vehicle lurched forward (the best way to describe it is the way a pinball bounces off of a bumper on a pinball machine) and continued moving forward, even though my foot was still on the brake pedal. The vehicle drove forward into the parking spot I had started from, over a curb at the front of the parking spot, through a patch of low lying plants and over a wall which is approximately four to five feet in height. My vehicle was airborne and came to rest in the lower level parking lot, striking a parked vehicle. It was only then that the vehicle stopped its forward motion. My arms had been locked on the steering wheel, my right foot on the brake pedal. My left leg absorbed the impact of the crash into the lower level parking lot. I was taken away in an ambulance with a broken leg and severely dislocated ankle. The vehicle has been deemed a total loss by my insurance carrier. I was advised that a claims investigator was sent to the insurance-company-authorized collision shop to where my vehicle was towed. Even though the emergency workers advised on the night of the accident that the car was not in a drivable condition, I was advised by my insurance company that the investigator drove the vehicle in the parking lot of the collision shop and he was not able to replicate the unintended acceleration.

27 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/30/2012

While driving at 35 mph, accelerator suddenly did no longer respond and "check engine" and esc warning lit up and speed decreased. I was able to coast at 5-10 mph to the nearest dealer 8 miles away. They immediately diagnosed it to the tps unit (throttle position sensor), which was replaced under an extended warranty. However this is the second incident with this car. The first time happened in October 2007 just a week after we bought the car. We had to coast down a mountain from 8000 feet. At that time the tps unit was also replaced but under the original warranty. It is scary if/when it happens while passing a vehicle on the freeway or even in dense city traffic. I will alert Hyundai to this problem myself.

28 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/13/2012

I was at a major interstate interchange, over 6 hours from home when I heard a slight noise and the check engine light came on. The car decelerated, but I was able to pull over to the side of the road. As I put the car in park, I heard the engine suddenly revving, as if I were pressing on the accelerator. Car was towed to the closest Hyundai dealership, where it sat for a week, waiting for repairs because (I was told) the part could not be located anywhere in the u. S. On Monday morning, I called the service department to inquire about my car and I was told it would be fixed by Tuesday afternoon at the latest. On Tuesday, I called to check on the status of my car and was told that they expected the part to be in on the next truck. This scenario was repeated twice more. At the end of the 3rd day, I was told that the part could not be located and that my car would not be repaired. The warranty covers up to 3 days of trip interruption service, so I asked what I was supposed to do to get home for work and how to get back to my car. Hyundai consumer affairs told me my situation was a unique case and they set up another case # and told me to keep the rental and file the remainder of the cost to the second case after the trip interruption case was settled. I drove the rental car home and back to the service department again the next Saturday, when my car was finally repaired. I was out over $600, had a botched vacation, lost my trust in the safety of my vehicle and, as the icing on the cake, Hyundai has refused to reimburse me for the second claim. It scares me to know, now, that the throttle position sensor has been a problem since the 2007 model of the Santa Fe, causing unintended acceleration and sudden deceleration, putting innocent people at risk. It also scares me that this company conducts themselves in such a deceptive manner when dealing with vulnerable people.

29 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/14/2012

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 3 mph and making a right turn into a parking spot the vehicle lunged forward and suddenly accelerated independently. The vehicle crashed into a bush and went through a fence. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a complaint was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 5,000.

30 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/21/2012

When approaching a stop (<5mph) and braking, the car engages in unintended acceleration. The engine will tach to over 3000 rpm and if you are not hard on the brakes, the car will accelerate. At least one time the car had to be put into neutral and the ignition turned off to keep the car under control.

32 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/07/2011

Sudden unintended acceleration. While driving my vehicle, the car "lurches" forward and the engine "reves" up. I've had it to the mechanic numerous times and they can not seem to find a reason for this to be happening. It is a very scary situation. I have 2 small children and have become fearful when driving my car. This happens on the highway as well as regular street roads. I've seen many forums on line with the same complaints from other Hyundai owners. I really hope that someone looks into these complaints.

33 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/29/2011

Was driving on a 2 lane road approximatly 20 mph following a backhoe. As backhoe moved to berm and I was considering passing, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. I removed my foot from the gas pedal but the vehicle continued to accelerate. I placed all of my weight on the brakes and was eventually able to bring the vehicle to a halt and forcible put in park. As I turned off the ignition, the engine was revving at a very fast rate. I checked the floor mat and gas pedal and there was no problems noted. I do not believe the floor mat was a factor in this. I believe there is a problem with this vehicle that needs investigated. The vehicle is with the dealer now.

34 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/28/2011

While driving on the freeway I accelrated and my car continued to accelerate rapidly by itself. I was going approx. 65mph, and within a few seconds my car was accelerating on its own to 80 or more mph. I applied my brakes but they couldn't counteract the acceleraton very well. I was able to pull over to the side of the freeway and put the car into neutral. When the car eventually slowed down, the gas pedal made a loud sound like it had released itself. This is the second time I have had this very scary event in two months, both on the freeway. The first time I was so shaken and shocked that I felt I hadn't had time to observe what was happening at the time. This last time I was able to pay close attention to what was happening. There was no interference with my floor mat. It was pure and simple: my gas pedal was dangerously accelerating by itself. I took my sante fe into the dealership and gave them a copy of many complaints from other sante fe owners that have experienced the exact incident, some resulting in accidents. In all cases the problen could not be duplicated by the dealership and could not be repaired nor explained. Sure enough, in my case the dealership could neither duplicate, explain, nor repair the problem. I am now fearful to drive my car, and I will sell it soon.

35 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/23/2011

On Monday, August 22, as I was driving down pewaukee road, I decided to get in the left lane to pass a semi truck. Suddenly I hear the car engine revving and the car's speed was accelarating. As there was a car directly in front of me and the semi truck to the right, I was pressing on the brake as hard as I possibly could. The car was hard to control and for a brief time I was in the on-coming traffic lane. All I could think of is get on a side road. The car would not react to the brakes. I turned onto a side road, aimed my car at a road sign and steel bollards on the side of the road so they could at least stop the car, threw the car in park and turned the key off (I am not sure in which order I did the last 2 steps). Fortunately the car coasted to a stop. The engine was making a winding noise. Hyundai roadside service picked up the car. Their service manager indicates they can not replicate the problem. It was suggested I had the floor matt bunched up under the gas and brake pedals. Give me a break! I'm not a complainer. This is the first time I have ever lodged a consumer complaint. But I was scared to death at the time and I am very hesitant about getting back in that car tonight (my husband is picking it up from arrow Hyundai). I am not concerned about hurting myself -- I don't think I could ever get over it if I hurt someone else because of this car. So Hyundai can't replicate the problem. Did anyone think they would be able to? the question is what is Hyundai doing about a problem that seems to be very documented on the internet. What is Hyundai going to do when a sudden acceleration problem kills someone? Hyundai did nothing for me. They initially seem very perplexed about such a problem. However, today when my husband arrived with a hand full of printed blogs all they wanted to say was they couldn't replicate the problem but would document the problem. I don't trust that they will so I am documenting the problem myself.
