44 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/05/2010

I am now afraid to drive my Hyundai sante fe. While driving home from work (about 30 miles from home) my vehicle started accelerating rapidly and surging when I was trying to keep it from lunging forward. I had to use the emergency brake and the brakes to stop it and that still did not stop the acceleration from continuing. I drove it directly to the shop where I wanted to have it fixed. It cost over $500 to have a throttle sensor replaced and now it's doing it again? I had it towed last night because I could not stop it again without almost putting it in a ditch. When it stopped it then started not wanting to go at all. This is a dangerous condition for sure with this vehicle. Since last month when this happened, I have bee reading lots of info from other drivers with the same issue. Hyundai does not want to give me anything for this dangerous repair as they don't want to admit any fault.

45 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/11/2010

Twice I have experienced sudden unintended acceleration (sua) in the past few weeks. The first time I was traveling on a primary road going the speed limit 45 mph. While my foot was steady on the accelerator, the car just suddenly accelerated without me pushing down on the accelerator pedal. I tried putting on the brake and that didn't seem to help any. I thought it could be my sandal stuck under the accelerator. . . . . After moving my right foot around, that did nothing; then attempted to move the mat with my right hand, that did nothing, and I put on the brake and that slowed the car down and I continued to drive as if nothing had happened. Fortunately, there were no cars near me to crash into. The second time I experienced sua, I was traveling on a major highway at the start of rush hour traffic traveling at approx 65 mph (the speed limit) when again the car just suddenly accelerated. I put on the brake which did nothing, then tried the brake a second time, which did nothing, and then I was able to gradually depress the emergency brake and get the car to come to a stop on the right shoulder of the highway after crossing two lanes. Again, I was fortunate to be able to make these maneuvers without causing an accident. Since this was the second time the car had sua, I didn't think it was a good idea to drive it anymore until I could have the Hyundai dealer take a look and find out what why this was occurring. After two days at the service center at the dealership, they have been running diagnostic tests as well as trying to reproduce the sua without any success and have deemed the car acceptable to drive with nothing showing out of the ordinary.

Since the original complaint the vehicle has had "unintended acceleration" about 10 times. Whoever drives the vehicle always keeps their hand on the shift control and shifts into neutral when coming to a stop at an intersection. We may be contacted by phone for more information concerning this problem.

49 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

My 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe has experienced two throttle position sensor failures within the last 4 months. This causes sudden acceleration and transmission downshifts and up shifts. Fortunately both times occurred on in town streets and I was able to keep control of the vehicle. Could be serious if it occurred while trying to merge into highway traffic.

50 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/10/2010

I have a 2006 Santa Fe 6 cyl. Front wheel drive. I purchased the car in 2007 from go Hyundai. The car has run very good, except the surging or acceleration problem. I took it back to the dealer two times specifically for this problem. They said they could find no problem. I took it to a second dealer, planet Hyundai, and they could find nothing. The problem got so bad even I was afraid to drive it. My wife was really scared to drive it. I finally took it back go and they called, said it was ready. When I picked it up, the service guy said they replaced a part and that I shouldn't have any more surging problems. Last night, my wife drove the Santa Fe to church. As she was parking it in the garage, (something she had done a thousand times), the car suddenly accelerated, slamming into our Volvo convertible, pushing it about five feet forward, jamming it under our stairs into the house. In all, there is a lot of damage to both vehicles.

52 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/26/2010

I drive a 2002 Hyundaid Santa Fe (engine 2. 7l 6 cyl. This morning I pulled into a parking space and suddenly my car accelerated forward. I hit the brake yanked the emergency brake up and it stopped. I then backed it up since it was way overshot in the space. I called the dealer and they said to bring it in ,but explained in great length that Hyundai's have a different throttle control system than Toyota's and bmws. I don't really care that my system is configured differently. The fact that my problem occurred during the Toyota crisis is circumstantial. My problem did occur though. And someone could've been hurt. The first time it happened was about 3 months ago, I was driving on a side road and going fairly slow (about 25 mph) when it all of a sudden accelerated. Since this was the first time, I was disoriented and unsure if I had done something. I hit the brake, pulled over and stopped. Now that it has happened again, I am very clear that it was an unintended sudden acceleration. I checked my floor mat and it is completely flat and secure. I'm having my husband drive it to the dealer. We'll see what they can find.

53 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/22/2009

In July 2009 and again in Dec 2009 I experience "sudden acceleration" in my 2002 Santa Fe with the 2. 7 v6 engine. I had about 92,000 miles on the odometer in July and about 95,000 in December. Both times the "sudden acceleration" occurred while I was in "manual mode". Some refer to this as "sport mode". I was driving in the mountains on pennsylvannia when these incidences occurred. The first time I was completely stopped in 1st gear. The car started to drifted into the ongoing traffic before I realized that the engine was accelerating. All this time I was pressing on the brake pedal as hard as I could and finally stopped about 10-15 into the oncoming traffic. Luckily, no traffic approached during this incident. It hadn't happened again until I was in the mountains of PA again in Dec 2009 in "manual mode" because of the hilly, icy road conditions at the time. The incident occurred while I was shifting between gears. My wife drives the car almost exclusively but never uses the "manual mode" however, when I drove in these two specific aforementioned incidences I was in "manual mode" on very hilly and windy road conditions. I am presently working with my Hyundai service manager on several potential fixes to the problem. They are taking this seriously but have no definitive fix for the problem as yet.

54 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/01/2008

When accelerating from a stop, this vehicle hesitates and then lurches forward with extreme uncontrolled acceleration. On wet or slippery pavement this vehicle is completely unsafe. I have read NHTSA web site and can see complaint after complaint on this vehicle, yet no recalls issued by NHTSA. Not sure why we are wasting my time, but at least when I am killed in this vehicle my wife will be able to now include nhsta in the lawsuit as you, the governing body, have now been officially informed of a safety defect!.

56 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/30/2006

At approximately 47,000 miles, check engine light came on. In addition, vehicle experienced a sudden occasional jump in idle to 3000 rpm+ while in park and drive after three minutes or so of operation. While in drive, vehicle lunges dangerously forward. When this occurs, ignition is turned off, and restart takes several attempts. After restarting, the vehicle will sputter and refuse to accelerate normally for 30-60 seconds. Vehicle also stalls occasionally after 3 minutes or so of use when accelerating from a full stop. Vehicle was brought to napelton Hyundai, west palm beach, FL on Nov 30. Crankshaft position sensor and camshaft sensor were replaced. Before leaving dealership with service manager present and automatic transmission in park, vehicle idle suddenly spiked to 4,200 rpm. I was told dealer was closed, and to drive it home. On December 5, vehicle again stalled again in traffic at intersection almost causing a collision. After restarting, it refused to accelerate normally for 30-60 seconds. Vehicle was towed to back to napelton Hyundai because both the stalling and sudden acceleration are serious concerns that make this Santa Fe unsafe to operate. The service manager agreed fully that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. On Dec 20 I was advised that the vehicle was not repaired because attempts to duplicate the problems were unsuccessful. I was told to pick it up and drive it. I refused to do so. Napelton had over 20 days to detect and correct these major safety issues, and I will not drive Hyundai's failure into an accident. A review of NHTSA defects reported for this Santa Fe for 2003-2005 model years reveals over 40 similar incidents, some involving collision and injury. These are categorized under several different components including vehicle speed control, electrical system, vehicle speed control: accelerator pedal, other, power train: automatic transmission, and equipment. Perhaps the Santa Fe's can be recalled before deaths result.
