36 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

I own 2006 Hyundai sonata, and the air bags lights warning lights are constantly illuminated. I brought my vehicle to the dealer who performed a diagnostic and came back with eror codes b1706, although the meaning was not explained, due to reasaerch I performed I now know that it is for passenger buckle pretensioner resistance being too high. I found this particularly odd as I use this as my car to commute to work thus the passenger seat is rarely used. The dealer went on to say that the belt buckles needed to be replaced and that it was going to cost over $600. I did not have adequate funds to adress the issue for that amount at that time, however came home and performed extensive reasearch on-line and through the NHTSA site regarding the issue noting that this is a very common safety issue with this vehicle imparticular, although my dealer had assured me it was not. What I did not see was any response from Hyundai regarding this issue, and in most circomstances the effected person was responded to, or was resonded to in a negative manner. This is a potentionaly major life thretening safety issue especially when air bags does not deploy during an accedent. It is also an inconvient problem noting that due to the air bag warning light remaining on, the car will not pass inspection regulations, and from what I have seen online some people have to have this piece replaced several times. This is a saftey issue and a failure on the manufactures part to offer a safe product. I urge the NHTSA to investigate the issue due to the frequency of complaints and the impact to the passengers' safety and urge hyundi to issue a recall to address this issue in the near future.

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

Our 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe has been taken to conicelli Hyundai numerous times and complained that the passenger airbag is not detecting my wife sitting in the passenger seat who weighs approximately 110 lbs. Each time, they've told us that the weight requirement is something different, yet always above my wife's weight. I've researched this and have found many of the same complaints (some where people have been seriously injured in an accident due to the airbag not deploying). The mechanics have suggested that my wife sit in the back seat!!! this is not fixing the problem!.

45 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/22/2010

When my wife is seated in the passenger seat the air bag sensor will not recognize that a person is occupying the passenger seat. My wife weighs approximately 140 lbs. This has been a regular problem for the last few years and has not gone away. It is the same problem as the current NHTSA campaign (08v161000) for 2006-2008 Hyundai sonatas for which Hyundai has issued a recall. We have visited multiple dealerships and they have all told us this is a common problem with the Santa Fe, however since Hyundai has not issued a recall there is nothing they can do to fix the problem. This is a very dangerous problem as both the front and side passenger air bags will not deploy in an accident which could result in serious injury or death to a passenger. We currently own a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with 37,000 miles.

46 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

47 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/10/2009

My husband and I recently purchased a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe. Everything about the car is great except for one thing: the front passenger airbag sensor does not detect me as an adult and toggles on and off at will. It is really frightening to be barreling down the road and realize that I have no airbag. I have read that the sensor is set at about 120lbs and I weigh 115lbs. The arrogant service person at Hyundai recommended that I be the driver or sit in the rear seat! I couldn't believe they would just tell a 48 year old woman to sit in the back! (that should be interesting going on dates with the hubby or helping my 15 year old learn to drive. ) the service person also asked me if I was sitting squarely on the seat with my legs extended. What? yes, I was sitting squarely on the seat with legs extended!! so, if I shift my butt slightly on a 4 hour drive - are they saying I'm responsible for the airbag not deploying? what ridiculousness. I was appalled. I have read online that many petite people have had this problem with the Santa Fe and the sonata. This is not an unknown or rare problem. I am taking it in to Hyundai service on Monday, but quite frankly, I was not encouraged by the questions the service people asked. If it can't be fixed to be armed at all times, I will return the car - and that would be a shame because we liked everything else about it.

48 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/22/2009

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminates on the instrument control, indicating that the passenger front air bag is inoperative. As a consequence in a situation that warrants the air bags may fail to deploy. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and a technician concluded that the failure is caused by a weight distribution failure. She contacted the manufacturer. Upon contact a representative advised her to sit in the rear seat, because the air bags are secondary safety methods; seat belts are the first. The failure mileage was 1,000. The current mileage was 3,000. Bl updated 10/13/09. The consumer requested to withdraw the complaint. The consumer wants all information deleted. Updated 10/13/09.

49 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/17/2009

My husband was in a frontal crash with the side of a school bus and the air bags never deployed on our 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe. We reported this incident to Hyundai and they sent an independent company out to investigate. A few weeks later we received a letter from Hyundai telling us the airbags were operational and my husband needed to use his breaks in order for the air bags to deploy. This is ridiculous what are air bags good for when you get into an accident where you don't have any time to react. This isn't the first time our Hyundai vehicle's airbags did not deploy. In 2001, I was in a 65 mph frontal crash with a guard rail on the interstate in my 2000 Hyundai tiburon. When I called Hyundai they told me I should hit the guard rail at a certain angle. What angle other than straight on will deploy the airbags? I did not pursue the matter, which I regret not doing but knowing that another Hyundai vehicle we own has airbag deployment issues I am afraid as I own another Hyundai vehicle. I asked Hyundai to inspect the safety of my 2006 sonata but they have refused.

50 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 01/29/2009

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai sonata. The contact noticed that the passenger side front air bag does not detect her weight. She weighs roughly 102 lbs. Secondly, she noticed that the air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel, which signified that the air bag was inoperative. The failure could cause the front passenger side air bag not to deploy and injure the occupant. The technician confirmed the failure; however, they could not provide a remedy. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 08v161000 (air bags); therefore, they could not offer any recourse. The failure and current mileages were 1,756. Updated 4/14/09 updated 04/17/09.

51 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/26/2008

The last week for Nov. 2008 I purchased a new Santa Fe for my wife. On 12/26/2008 she was involved in a head on wreck. My 25 yr. Old daughter who is very petty about 110 lbs. Was riding in the passenger seat and the air bags did not deploy. Due to the air bags not deploying she was injured very seriously. I had no idea that there were prior complaints about the air bags it appears that there has been quite a few complaints I hope something is done before someone is killed. The manufacture needs to fix this problem.

52 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/26/2008

I purchased a used 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe in Aug/2005 from a Hyundai dealership (# ). In Aug/2006, the airbag light came on. The vehicle was taken to the dealership and the results were "code b1382 psab resistance high - resecure connector under the passenger seat/clear code". In Feb/2008, the airbag sensor again appeared. The same technical code was detected, and the dealership resolution was to "reroute wire harness". In Mar/2008, the airbag light again appeared and was serviced by the dealership. In Nov/2008, the vehicle was again taken to the dealership due to the airbag light appearing. At the time of service in Nov/2008, the vehicle was out of warranty. The dealership indicated they would not fix the airbag free of charge under the warranty, at which time, they were informed that a complaint would be filed under the California lemon law due to repeat fixes for the same issue. The dealership then fixed the issue. On Nov. 26, 2008, the vehicle was hit in a high-speed rear end collision (~35mph) while at a stop light and pushed into an intersection, where it broadsided a moving vehicle. As a result of the impacts, the Hyundai was totaled, all rear seated passengers sustained injury due to the spare tire being lifted from the initial impact and raising the 60/40 split rear seat and pushing it forward, the front passenger received chest contusions and the driver of the vehicle sustained upper body injuries. Despite being pushed forward and making a strong impact, the airbags failed to deploy. I requested Hyundai investigate the matter, and they determined that although the front right of the vehicle was damaged from the secondary impact, it was not sufficient to warrant airbag deployment. I researched complaints from other Hyundai owners regarding repeated airbag sensor light repairs and other airbag failures, including stories of crashes into poles with failed airbags. Hyundai has not issued any recall, but they probably should.

53 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/20/2008

Air bag light is on for the third time in two years of ownership, dealer claims to have replaced a sensor on the second visit. I am concerned in the unlikely event of a frontal crash the air bags will not deploy. It also causes the alarm to go off 15 seconds after locking doors.

54 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/16/2008

My wife was driving on a little st. In fostoria, ohio on oct 16 at approx. 4 pm. Her speed was around 35 mph and the road conditions were good. She had a large vehicle on her driver side as this is a two lane highway. A blazer/bronco crossed from the oncoming lane attempting to turn on a side street (south union street, cutting right in front of our 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe. The impact stopped her vehicle immediately and drove her car into a truck waiting to turn onto little street from the same side street. Although the accident caused a front end impact to our Hyundai, the airbag in our Hyundai did not deploy. My wife sustained injuries to her left collarbone and shoulder, and also to her right knee, requiring a trip to the emergency room and xrays. She was also unable to work for a short time due to her injuries.

55 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

2007 Santa Fe taken in for the 2nd time today as the airbag indicator light is permanently on. The 1st time this happened (few months ago) they replaced the sensor, but it has happened again. At the same time, the 'beep' when locking the car disappears. Am concerned that the airbag will not deploy correctly.

56 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/19/2008

Airbag sensor in front passenger seat does not detect an adult sitting in the seat. Air bag will not deploy in an accident.

57 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/19/2008

My 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe has a defect in the passenger side air bag sensor. When my wife sits in the passenger seat of the car the "pass airbag off" light comes on which indicates that in the event of a collision her airbag will not deploy. She weighs 145 pounds, but if I get in the passenger seat then the light goes out, I weigh 210 pounds. There is obviously a problem with the weight sensor. This is a serious safety issue, I have heard from many other owners of similar vehicles complain of the same problem. The dealer refuses to acknowledge the problem , although a recall for a similar problem in the Hyundai sonata was issued. Please before someone loses their life because of this, have Hyundai issue a recall. Thank you.

58 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/04/2008

Hello, this is a new car (400mi. ) and with my wife (5'4" and 120lbs. ) sitting in the passenger seat the passenger side airbag light illuminates, indicating the airbag is off. Occasionally the light will go off (as expected, indicating the passenger airbag is armed) as we start driving and then it will come on after 5 to 10min. Of driving. It is very disconcerting to think the airbag may not deploy if needed. Thanks, dan.

59 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/21/2008

In my 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe the front passenger air bag does not work properly. It intermittently works when my daughter and I (115 & 120 lbs) sit in the seat. I can sit perfectly still and it will be engaged, and then it will disengage, and then engage, again or visa versa. It has been to the dealer to be repaired 4 times, but they say they cannot reproduce. They just hook it up to a computer and say it works as designed. Humble Hyundai service manager even told me to sit in the back seat (I'm 51 years old). I am afraid if we are in an accident that the airbags will not deploy. I have notified Hyundai consumer affairs and Hyundai pr as well. Does someone have to be killed in an accident for NHTSA and Hyundai to issue a recall? I have been given weights of 30, 80, 150, 115 and 120 lbs to activate the airbag sensor by humble Hyundai. Also given 35, 45, 150, 130, 135, 145, 40, 100 & 105 lbs by service departments of other dealerships. Also talked to consumer affairs about this, why can't Hyundai tell anyone what the actual weight to activate is? there was a safety recall issued for sonatas for this exact problem why can't one be issued for Santa Fes. . 60 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/16/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. On August 16, 2008, while driving 45 mph, a vehicle failed to yield at a red light. The contact was unable to stop and the front bumper on the passenger side of her vehicle struck a travel trailer. The driver and passenger frontal air bag indicators illuminated, but failed to deploy. The passenger seated in the front seat received injures to the neck, back, and head. The rear passenger was traumatized. The contact received injuries to the neck, back, and shoulders. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the air bags failed to deploy due to faulty wires. A report was filed with the manufacturer and they stated that the air bags will only deploy under extreme experiences. They further stated that the front passenger side bumper crashing into the trailer would not have caused the air bags to deploy. The owner's manual stated that the air bags were designed to deploy at any speed in the event of a crash. The vehicle has been repaired. Nevada police report number 0808160558 was filed. The failure mileage was 115,000 and current mileage was 116,000.

61 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/13/2008

2008 Hyundai Santa Fe - passenger side airbag sensor malfunction with airbag warning light on @ 250 miles - less than 24 hrs after purchase. Dealer cleared code - problem recurred later same evening - now problem is intermittent. Seems as if the 2007 model issue has carried over to the 208 model. Not happy - bad start for what is marketed as a safe car - what good is 8 airbags if they will not deploy when needed.

62 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/03/2008

Passenger seat airbag "off" indicator lights when a 115 pound, 5'8" adult sits in the seat (indicating that the passenger airbag will not deploy in the event of an accident). Local dealership and Hyundai national 1-800 complaint line indicate that the indicator light is performing to specifications. I believe specifications (supposedly a 130 pound minimum for full functioning of passenger airbag deployment system) are inappropriate and result in an unsafe situation.

63 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/27/2007

Failure of driver's side frontal airbag to deploy on a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe. My wife was driving her Santa Fe on a two-lane country road in western pennsylvania. Weather and road conditions were normal, with no ice, snow, or other slipping hazards on the road. As she rounded a curve a car was stopped directly in front of her and because her vision was obstructed by landscale along the road she could not see the other vehicle (a 1988 Jeep truck) before she struck it. Damage to the Jeep was minimal (broken rear window and bent bumper), but damage to the front of her Santa Fe was extensive, estimated about $9,500. I called our local Hyundai dealership in montgomery, alabama to urge them to contact the manufacturer about a potential airbag malfunction. I was told by the service department the failure of the airbag to deploy was not unusual because the airbag deployment sensors are located well back from the front of the car. Given the severe damage to the car (the front is extensively crushed) and the pennsylvania state troopers observation that he was surprised the airbag did not deploy, Hyundai should address this potential problem.
