Complete engine failure engine failed in 2021, prior to recall notices (2 of them) finally had it towed to hundai. Hundai wants me to buy a new engine block for $13,000. 00 thirteen thousand dollars. Hundai needs to buy that car back, or pay to put a new engine block in it. Had the parts not been faulty, I'd still have a car to drive.
Engine failure at 103,000 miles. I was getting gas and as I driving away, I heard something pop and I immediately lose power and my engine was knocking. I checked to see if there's a recall and I don't see one. I don't know what to do at this point.

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while approaching a stop light at 5 mph, the vehicle shut-off with several unknown warning lights illuminated. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact went to kendall Hyundai (15895 s dixie hwy, miami, FL 33157) and was informed to tow the vehicle in to be diagnosed. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 15v568000 (engine) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
While driving on the highway, my engine abruptly died with all subsequent warning lights coming on. I had no power, beyond battery power, and was stuck on the side of the highway for 2. 5 hours during rush hour. Engine would not restart or turnover representing a likely catastrophic engine failure. My local Hyundai dealer did not seem surprised by this revelation and they still wont tell me what's wrong even though the car has been un their possession for 72 hours.

Engine had a critical engine failure, per dashboard?,while driving on highway, no engine warning ⚠️ lights before failure! car engine switched to low gear and immediately only drove about 10mph. I was able to move to slow lane then off to the shoulder. . . My car was not hit by any other car. . . But it did come close. Drove perfectly fine up to engine failure/seizure. This is an extremely unsafe condition for a car engine to be in suddenly. Again no oil or engine lights on before engine failure. Hyundai case has been created # 18049339 and dealer notified. Both appears to me not to understand the seriousness of this safety hazard. . . Engine has been replaced by a certified mechanic after Hyundai refused to help with this matter. I will include response and invoice for engine.
The contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the engine threw a rod and the vehicle stalled without warning. Due to the failure, the contact pulled the vehicle off to the side of the roadway and had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic. The mechanic confirmed that the engine threw a rod which led to complete engine failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact to towed the vehicle to an authorized dealer for assistance. The vehicle was then towed to Hyundai of greeley (4533 w 29th st, greeley, CO 80634) and he was informed that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer offered any further assistance. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 116,000.

My engine failed while driving. . . . . I had it towed to Hyundai dealer because I was informef about vehicle recall. The dealership will not provide me with loaner car without full coverage insurance. I have been without my vehicle almost 30 days.
2012 Hyundai Sonata. Consumer writes in regards to engine failure. The consumer requested to be reimbursed under the recall.
While driving on a busy interstate at speed (approx 65mph) on 9/26/20, the engine abruptly shut down. There was no warning, the vehicle was traveling straight. The vehicle was taken to the only Hyundai dealership in the area and inspected/ diagnosed 9/29/20. The dealer stated that the engine had seized and must be replaced. The estimated cost to replace (with a used engine with 40% more miles) was 25% higher than the replacement value for the vehicle. The dealer representative said the vehicle was not covered by safety recall 15v-568 relating to 2012 Hyundai Sonata's with the 2. 4l engine. The recall does not reference any specific model and only discusses the failure of the engine which is common across hybrid and non-hybrid models. The vehicle has only 78,000 miles at the time of the engine failure. Engines should not fail this early, unless there is a manufacturing defect. Which it seems there is a very well known defect to this very engine that results in this very outcome. Except for some unknown reason the known failure with the same engine in a hybrid model is not covered by the recall.
Engine failed / blew while driving.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that her son was driving at 70 mph and the engine ceased. The contact's son guided the vehicle from the middle lane to the side of the highway. The vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was towed first to an independnent mechanic and he diagnosed the vehicle with engine failure. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer Hyundai of central florida (17325 e highway 50 clermont, FL 34711, 888-566-5820) who confirmed the same diagnosis of the engine ceasing. The contact was not given the specific reason as to why the engine ceased. The dealer initially stated that there was a recall on the engine and would submit a request to the manufacturer. The contact called and confirmed with the manufacturer the engine was covered under a recall and would contact the dealer to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer then declined the repair by email stating that the vehicle was four years out of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 53,000.
While driving down the highway at 55 mph a warning for the hybrid system appeared on the middle screen between the gauges along with an audible chime instructing to safely pull over and stop the car. After pulling over and turning off the car I was unable to restart the vehicle. Display stated the hybrid battery was low and not to start the engine. After having the car towed to the dealer, the dealer stated the engine was seized. The car had been serviced as recommended since purchase. I am the original owner. There were no warning signs of complete engine failure. I have since learned that Hyundai Sonata had a recall for engine failures, but my model was not included.
Vehicle engine stalled at stoplight. Had towed to local mechanics shop for evaluation. After sitting overnight the car was driven approx 10-15 miles and it ran ok. Several weeks later, on about July 22, 2020 the engine shut down at a stop light, 6 lane road. Car pushed to side of road and towed to mechanics shop. Following morning when mechanic cranked the car the engine knocked! the mechanic, who is a certified 'master mechanic' said it was a rod knock. Could only be repaired with new engine. The car has 126,000 miles. The car was put into service brand new as my son'e business car furnished by his company. At 90,000 miles the car was wholesaled to me for my grandson. We have complete maintenance and oil changed records for entire life of car. We contacted the dealer who informed us we would have to deliver the car and pay $130 for them to evaluate and they were very discouraging that Hyundai would honor any kind of warranty. We learned there was a class-action lawsuit involving these engine failures so we intend to pursue that course of action. Very, very disappointed in the quality of Hyundai and their response.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact made multiple attempts to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with complete engine failure. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
The car was maintenance on the manufacturer's recommended interval. A catastrophic engine failure happened in February of 2020. Not knowing this wasn't a fluke issue and not having a warranty on the car. I purchased a replacement engine on my own dime costing a total of $6500 in repair. This should have been taken care of sooner by the manufacturer.
0 warning codes and suffered catastrophic engine failure.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the vehicle consumed an excessive amount of engine oil. The low engine oil warning light failed to display a message to indicate that engine oil level was low. The contact stated that the oil level was closely monitored to prevent engine failure. The vehicle was taken to tulsa Hyundai (9777 s memorial dr, tulsa, ok 74133) and the contact was made aware of NHTSA campaign number: 17v226000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.
Under normal driving conditions, the car jolted and something didn't feel right on the right front side of the car. I was able to pull the car off of a 4 lane highway and into a parking lot. I discovered motor oil all over the inside of the engine bay and in the right wheel well. Upon inspection by two different mechanical shops and my insurance company, a hole was found in the engine. The vehicle has 90,017 miles on it. It has been indicated this is a manufacturing defect that would lead to engine failure and a hole in the engine. Hyundai is claiming that this is not covered under the theta ii engine recall and have been extremely slow to assist. I am the second owner of this vehicle. I purchased the vehicle in June of 2017 with approximately 39,500 miles on it. I have changed oil with synthetic oil every 7500 miles which is the manufacturer's recommendation. There was no warning, no warning lights illuminated, etc. Prior to the engine failure.
Vehicle stalled on highway would not start had to be towed on 10/1/19. Towed to service vendor, not a Hyundai dealer. They stated engine locked. Vehicle had been at st charles Hyundai automotive 8/19/19 replaced oil flow control valve. Contacted Hyundai dealer stated nothing they could do. Mileage 138,000 and all required service had been done. Recall 132 inspection had been done at approximately 58,000 on 2/15/16. Noted number of complaints to NHTSA showing numerous 2011 Sonata had engine failure after the extended format of 120,000 and many had failed a second time after engines failed. This vehicle was built at alabama plant. The Hyundai dealership stated the vehicle would have to be towed to their facility and inspected. The decision would be Hyundai USA not the dealership. It is hard to understand how this can not be a defective vehicle. The number of units repaired and repaired a second time goes against the averages . The number of fires that have resulted in total loss of vehicles appears to be and indication of numerous issues with vehicles from this plant. It will cost $4500 to replace this engine and Hyundai USA should bear some of the cost. If after engine replacement vehicle performed properly that would prove the correction, but many units had to have the neck filler replaced the plant had a problem. Engines failed with only 10,000, 30,000 65,000, 135,000 miles. The units that burnt were handled by insurance and Hyundai USA not held accountable. Please reopen the investigation on recall 132 the number of owners are bearing the brunt of Hyundai poor quality. Understanding they completely changed that engine in 2012 knowing the 2011 issues could not be fixed correctly.
I was driving on a highway and my car simply stopped accelerating and began to shut off. How does a car just die in the middle of driving?! this is a serious safety hazard that needs to be addressed. I barely made it over to the side of the road to get out of the way of traffic. Nearly got hit by a car!! I was absolutely terrified that I was going to get hit because I was unable to move my car. Unknown reasoning for failure, but I believe this to be an engine malfunction or issue with the alternator. I am now aware of a recall on that indicates engine failure would result in vehicle stall, increasing the risk of crash!!!! unbelievable. Please address this problem so that no one else has to experience something as terrifying as this! recall number: 15v568000.
2016 Sonata engine failure. Vehicle's engine seized while in motion driving down the highway. Cylinder #4 penetrated the engine block and damaged the bell housing of the transmission. Both engine and transmission are having to be replaced.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. While the contact's daughter was driving at a very low speed, the engine completely failed. Prior to the failure, the engine seized on several occasions. After each failure, the vehicle would restart and resume normal operation. The contact stated that the check engine indicator illuminated prior to the engine failures. The vehicle was towed to napleton Hyundai of carmel (4200 e 96th st, indianapolis, in 46240, (844) 729-4217) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000. The VIN was unknown.
Had an accident 6/29/19 was hit driver's side front tire area. Insurance recommended closest repair shop fix (dick smith) and they returned it. Same week car was taken back to repair shop for concerns, clicking, vibrating, etc. Was told by dick smith repair shop needs a boot but car is "driveable". Two days later car dies while driving. . Ds (jeff, service mgr) says died 4 no oil causing engine to "seize up" but no light was on. . And prior to Hyundai running diagnostics also. Ds towed to Hyundai. Told by peacock Hyundai (chris) they had several reports of engine failure within 2 weeks of my car being towed and they were waiting on approval for new engine but then a different person (ted) says engine "seized" for no oil but car had oil change within last 6k miles and is full synthetic. Please help as I have a newborn and need a vehicle.
In the evening of 07/11/2019 I was driving my 2013 Hyundai santa on the bishop Ford expressway, when smoke began to come out of the hood. I pulled over to the shoulder, and at that time , my car was completely filled with black smoke, and the brakes completely failed, foot went right to the floor. The car coasted until it finally stopped. By this time, the car was in fire. I was able to exit before it completely engulfed in flames. There was no warning to me that this car was going to start on fire. I had the engine replaced 2 years ago because of engine failure. Two engines in 6 years is definitely not normal. I could have been killed in that car. . Hyundai needs to take responsibility.
Engine failure.
While driving straight on busy street approaching highway, car shook, all warning lights illuminated, then dimmed as car came to a stop and died in the center of the road. It could not be restarted. This happened in seconds, not affording driver enough time to move toward shoulder. As Hyundai explained, the engine failed and, in so doing, sent electric surge that also "fried" the starter. Dealer indicated there were photos of engine after incident. Local mechanic said that after removing the starter, visual inspection allowed him to determine a new engine was needed. This is consistent with Hyundai's explanation. There were no problems with this car prior. Two prior engine-related safety recalls (issued in response to this problem) were performed on this vehicle, and no safety problems were detected. Hyundai advised this is a known issue for Sonatas, and they remain unable to determine when/where this will happen to any Sonata. A local dealer had several on lot with same issue. Engine and starter need to be replaced, and it remains undetermined if any other components were impacted.
The recall for Hyundai, campaign953 was to install engine software update for all Sonata vehicles from 2011-2018 with a 2. 4l gdi. I had the engine recall software update done on 3/26/19. This was intended as a warning system in the event of engine failure. On 4/15/19, while driving on the freeway in los angeles, my engine seized up, and put my life at risk. The software update did not work, and there was no warning at all. If I had not been in the right lane, and able to steer over into a very narrow shoulder of the freeway, I could have been seriously injured or worse. The car was towed to my mechanic's lot near me, since it was a Sunday evening, and Hyundai was not open. The next day, my mechanic did start the car, and said it should be fine to drive it the short distance to the Hyundai dealer, less than 2 miles away, since it was a warranty situation. I got one block, and the engine seized up again. I had it towed the 2 miles to the dealer. They discovered the engine had to be replaced, which took almost 4 weeks. No explanation of the software update failure. Since getting the car back on may 7,2019- I have had total anxiety, and fear the same issue could happen. I had a severe panic attack on the freeway on may 10, that was terrifying, and a friend had to stay on the phone with me until I got to work. I have contacted the Hyundai corp. Legal dept. Through an attorney, and there has been no satisfaction in compensation or consideration for the fact that due to their faulty engine, and recall software failure, they put my life at risk! the customer care dept. Is the worst I have ever experienced with any company, and I am now at extreme financial loss. The re-sale value has plummeted, and I now have financial stress being forced to get another car I feel safe in. I have lost total confidence in Hyundai. This was a terrible nightmare that is not being resolved! help!.
The engine completely stalled while I was driving down the interstate at 68 miles per hour. The engine failure happened suddenly without warning as I was trying to accelerate down the interstate. At the moment the engine failure occurred there was various dashboard lights on my car that illuminated - including the engine oil pressure warning light and the malfunction indicator lamp. I maneuvered the car to the off-ramp and then parked on the right shoulder. The engine was visibly vibrating and shaking at this point before I turned off the ignition. Any attempts to start my car again were unsuccessful and a tow to the Hyundai dealership was needed.
January 2019, vehicle to dealer for recall for engine failure. March 2019, went to start vehicle. Flashing engine light. Could not get above 2000 rpm. Dealer advised to tow vehicle. Dealer advised car is in limp mode. Dealer advised possible engine replacement. Two weeks later, car is still not repaired. Now they are possibly replacing 'harness'. Advised that they would have vehicle another two weeks.
