Excessive oil consumption. I bought the car in used condition back in June 2019 with approximately 82,000 miles on it. It currently has 125,000 miles on it and only recently have I been experiencing this issue. I change the oil on this car every 5,000 miles or so since I do plenty of commuting for work. The last time I took my car to get the oil changed before I noticed the problem was in December 2020. I never bothered to check the oil because I had complete confidence that the oil was topped off at every oil change. However, I started noticing that the car felt forced whenever I tried to accelerate. I also started noticing a subtle rattling noise coming from under the hood whenever I would try to accelerate. I had a mechanic check my car in January 2021 when he checked the oil levels and pointed out that there was nothing on the dipstick. What is even stranger is that no dashboard light had come on. I had driven the car approximately 2,500 since the the oil change in December and it was already empty. I checked under the car where I park both at home and at work and there are no oil spills on the ground. I've read several forums where people have the same issue with older models of this car and there are recalls for those models. However, I've also come across forums where people are experiencing the same issue with newer models such as mine. I will be taking this car to a Hyundai dealer to address the issue. But at this point, I have to add about quart of oil every just to keep it full and to prevent the engine from seizing while I am driving. This is a huge concern.

I was driving on the highway and heard a rattling sound on the engine then the car turned off. I had it towed 53 miles to the dealership and they told me the car needs a new engine and that they were going to send a request to Hyundai for the engine. They said it would take a couple of days to find out what they say.

Oil is not sufficient. I'm losing oil fast and there is not an oil leak. I'm hearing a rattle noise. My radio changes media modes on its own.

I currently have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata hybrid with an active loan. I took my car to a local dealership from carmax's repair pal certified shops because my car was shaking and producing a rattling sound. I drove my car to the car repair and was later told my car is no longer starting up and they needed me to get it towed off their lot at my expense. I towed the car to a Hyundai repair shop. I was told that my engine is dead and I need a new one. The quote was approximately $10,000 to get a new engine. The insurance company refused to pay for the engine. My car now sits in front of my home (inoperable) while I'm paying off the loan. I cannot afford a new car. I was not told about an engine recall for this model.
Driving in a school area under 25 miles heard a rattle noise coming for car pooled over and called for a tow truck and shut off my car next thing I know I blew and engine I keep maintenance and all up to date recall on my vehicle. I don't understand why this happen.

I started my car the morning of 7/3/2020 and when I started it I heard a little rattling noise that sounded like it was coming from the front tire. After driving home from work it got worse and I heard the rattling knocking noise every time I accelerated. It eventually got so loud and bad I had to park the car. It continues to turn on but the engine is knocking when I looked under the hood. My car has had a recent oil change so I don't know what could cause this issue. Please help!!!.

On my way home, heard a rattling noise coming from my vehicle. Pulled over to see if anything might has gotten stuck underneath and everything looked good. Drove it home and took it to a mechanic next day. Was told by my mechanic that the bottom of the engine is knocking, it had been burning oil internally and engine needs to be replaced. Contacted Hyundai and they stated that warranty had been extended to 120,000 miles and they only want to cover a small percentage to replace the engine.

Used car with 86,000 miles on it. On the 90th after buying car from used car dealership, a rattling noise became apparent. When I took the car to a mechanic, it was determined the engine was blown. They said that it was seized and if I had been on the freeway, it could've been catastrophic. After some research, I found a proposal for the settlement of a class action lawsuit including many Hyundai and kia cars. The settlement included all Hyundai Sonata vehicles years 2011-2018 and some 2019 vehicles. My car is clearly one of the cars affected. I am seeking help from the NHTSA so that Hyundai can take responsibility for their careless mistakes that have already resulted in many accidents and car fires. A Hyundai dealership will be looking at my car on January, 6th 2020. I'm anticipating them trying to brush this under the rug and blaming the issues on me despite having the car for only 90 days after purchase along with the abundant knowledge of Hyundai and kia knowingly using faulty engines. I need your help to ensure they fix their mistakes at no cost to me and other owners. These mistakes need to be resolved swiftly so that no more consumers suffer unnecessary harm and financial burden for the mistakes Hyundai and kia knowingly made.
Well, very simply I was merging onto a parkway and pushing down on the accelerator, car was speeding up then I noticed that it seemed like I wasn't getting any acceleration. Looked at the dashboard and saw that it seemed all the lights were on and realized that the engine had shut itself down. Pulled off to the shoulder and tried to restart it (head kind of a whirring noise), but it wouldn't start.

In November 2018, we had a rattling noise during low speeds, which turned out to be a problem with the engine (engine seized up during warm up inspection by mechanic). The engine was replaced for free due to an extended warranty that was part of a recall and settlement agreement with Hyundai. In February 2019, the check engine light came on, which was for a damaged catalytic converter and cost over $2000 to replace. Last month, we received a recall notice from Hyundai stating " Hyundai is conducting a safety recall in the united states to confirm the high pressure fuel pipe was properly connected by Hyundai dealers to the high-pressure fuel pump outlet when the engine was replaced under recalls 132 and 162. " we have an appointment scheduled for this service. There is a new recall for other kia and Hyundai models that include the catalytic converter, but it has not been included for our model year.
Engine is making weird rattling sound on acceleration and burning oil too much. Prior to 3000 miles oil change, checked dip stick and indicated no oil. Low oil on dashboard did not came on. Believed that the engine consumption is out of limit. Rough idle and acceleration hesitation was notice.
Vehicle fails to accelerate or acts as if it is going to shut off and just recently I got in vehicle started it and the check engine light came on. Vehicle shut off while starting it finally it started up I took it to auto zone to read the code. They advised me the code p200a is very common among Hyundai and it most like is the vcma that needs replacement. After doing further research there are many complaints about the vcma failing and having to be replaced. My warranty is up on my vehicle and I feel this is something that Hyundai needs to address as soon as possible given this is a common issue and could cause harm to driver or others while driving that vehicle. Also when attempting to accelerate and the vehicle fails to do so there is a rattling noise when pressing the gas petal.

Engine failed: loud noise, rattling sound, inability to accelerate beyond 45mph. Two shops we took it to diagnosed as engine failed, replace engine . . . Based on compression test, stethoscope to engine, etc. The car was being driven on a highway, when the noise started, lack of acceleration was felt, driver pulled off the highway, and drove slowly up to a nearby parking lot. We actually drove 12 miles on city streets to a mechanic shop we knew who gave the first diagnosis.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact noticed a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment when turning the vehicle left or right. The vehicle was taken to lehman Hyundai (21400 NW 2nd Ave, miami, FL 33169, (866) 647-4751) who stated that there was no recall regarding the failure. The dealer noticed that the alternator was replaced the previous year and stated that there should not be any failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired and the rattling sound remained. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 73,770.
To note vehicle had a complete evaluation 1 week prior with no current or upcoming issues. Upon starting car "abs light, traction light, bsd (blind side detection) light" came on. Upon driving, my bsd sensors did not operate, and engine made whistling sound upon acceleration and would not go over 40mph without the power being pulled from the engine. Also to note my car was apparently trying to be in a higher gear at 30mph (5th gear). All of this is very suspicious as the car has only been serviced at dealerships with most recent being 1 week prior. Service department seemed very poor at explaining the cause for the simultaneous malfunctions of all these systems. I do not currently feel as safe with this vehicle as I have before.
Problems started with rattling noise from engine, and engine loosing power/surging. This was 2 years ago with 20,000 miles on car, and took to dealer who applied ecm update. Which if anything made it worse, and car started surging forward in situations like applying brakes when approaching red light. This has caused me to nearly rear end several cars, and pushed me out in traffic when engine surges unexpectedly. I have made several trips to the dealership, like many others always get the same answer we were unable to reproduce issue, and even went to another dealership to receive same answer. Car still has same problem, it happens frequently, and also happens when I have had friends with me or drive the car. So I'm not crazy, not doing anything wrong, and believe hyaundai is trying to wait for power train warranty to expire. Since I travel for work and now have 94,000 miles on the 2015 Sonata sport.
I was driving on the freeway when my 2012 Hyundai Sonata began making a rattling sound and lose power and the engine died. There were no check engine lights, oil lights or overheating gauge indications prior to this. As I was pulling to the side of the freeway smoke began coming from under the hood. When I stopped on the side of the freeway and opened the hood, the bottom portion of the engine was on fire and I could see the flames coming out from underneath.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving, he heard a rattling noise under the hood. The contact stated also mentioned while taking the vehicle to be serviced for an oil change, the rattling noise began to make a loud knocking noise. The check engine warning light illuminated. The contact mentioned that the independent mechanic informed him that he should not drive the vehicle and that he needed to have the engine checked. The vehicle was then taken to dave hallman Hyundai at 2104 state st, erie, PA 16503, (814) 452-6731 where it was diagnosed that there was an oil sludge build-up and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not offer any further assistance. The failure mileage was 56,150.
While driving on highway 91w, vehicle began to make a very loud rattling noise from engine. All dashboard lighting began to flash, then vehicle shut off. I managed to stop in an emergency section of highway. The vehicle electrical components turned on but not the engine. I shut off the vehicle completely, called towing service, & while speaking to the agent I noticed smoke coming out from the engine and then from inside dashboard. Fire flames then immediately began to come out from the front driver-side engine. I exited the vehicle through the passenger side door, crossed the ramp lane, & watched the entire front end vehicle completely engulfed in flames. The city of riverside fire department put out the fire with the assistance of chp.
I am having an issue with the panoramic sunroof. I has loud rattle sound as hell. I have contacted several times before my warranty expires but they refused to fix it.
My wife helen drives to work 35 miles each way daily, she started hearing a rattling noise that came from the engine area. The noise persisted for a few days and was observed during her commute to work twice. Husband test drove car as well and comfirmed a rattling noise. Car towed to premier hyndaui 3480 naglee road, tracy , California,95304. Sevice technitian comfirmed in writing vehicle has a non repairable engine, metal extracts were found inside the oil pan and the dealership advised engine is no good and needs to be replaced.
I am having trouble starting and completely shutting my car down. When I hit the button to start it I get a rattle noise and the the engine doesn't turn over. When I try to shut it off the display in the car will tell me to shift to park when already in park and the radio will not shut off. I have to re-start the car and move the shift lever from park to drive and back to get it to shut down. This goes on several times some days. Also when I'm driving in automatic, the car will suddenly go into manual first gear and I will have to shift over to manual and back to auto to put it in drive. I had a recall for shift lever problems before but I think there is more to the problem then what they are fixing. This car seems to have many electrical problems. My hvac also has quit working while driving and had to shut the car down before it would work again.
Issues with loud rattle noise coming from engine when accelerating over 40 mph. Called Hyundai dealer service dept. & made appt to get inspected. Service rep claimed the mechanic heard no noise, so I had to go drive car with mechanic to identify noise. (noise obviously noticeable) after driving car with mechanic he said the cvts needed to be replaced. I took my recall notice for NHTSA # 15v-568. I asked if this was due to metal debris left in engine they said no. They gave me a rental. Took 2 weeks for cvts to be replaced. About 8 days later after Hyundai returning car the noise was back. 3 weeks it got worse, called Hyundai dealer, took it back. The service rep. Again claims they dont hear anthing. Have to drive my car again to identify noise to mechanic. Its very frustrating. There still is no solution to rattle noise, recall or have they inspected my car properly for the car issues I am experiencing & reporting to them. The car stalled on my way to drop it off. Rpms increased but car did not accelerate. Let off gas pedal then tried again serveral times finally the car puttered & proceeded. My daughter was in the car with me so it was a scary situation for the both of us. I told the service rep what just happened. Left my car & they gave me rental. I have experienced loud noise from engine since I bought the car new in December 2011. Was told that the car is supposed to be loud & make the rattle noise bc of eco engine. As the years have gone by the car's performance has worsen. It has stalled several times. I dont feel safe. The car only has 45,000 miles. Ive had several issues battery, steerling wheel , radio, etc. . Bad experinces. Ive maintained the car with proper oil changes, reported all issues on file with Hyundai service dept . Hyundai needs to take responsibility & fix the problems with their cars & find a remedy to thier engine recall ASAP. Safety is important.
Engine rattling sound upon acceleration and oil burning fast. Brought into dealership 3x for the same concern. Twice while it was still under warranty. Sent home saying they couldn't figure it out. Even assured us it was nothing serious. On third time (60,800 mi), car burned through oil and oil light came on, rattling sounds came back, stereo stopped working, car died (new starter needed). Dealership inspected it and said they figured it out this time (how convenient that they finally did right after the warranty expired), suggested a brand new engine. Says there was tons of sludge and metal shaving in the oil. They cited 'owner neglect'. We provided them every documentation of maintenance and consistent oil changes. Denied honoring our warranty. Did research and found 2011-2012 Sonatas have a manufacturing engine defect. People all have same issues and outcomes with their cars. Hyundai will not even look at our proof of maintenance and continue to deny there is an issue with their engine.
The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 20 mph, he heard a loud banging noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact stated that the noise was louder while making a turn with a passenger seated in the rear. The dealer inspected the vehicle on two occasions; the first time they were unable to diagnose the failure and the second time the dealer adjusted the rear suspension. The suspension adjustment failed to solve the failure. As of October 9, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 12,000 and the current mileage was 16,997. The dealer stated the front right door lock inoperable, passenger seat area makes a rattling sound, right trunk trim vibrates when vehicle in motion and hears knocking sound in the engine. Updated 10/23/07.
