37 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/16/2017

My vehicle shut down in September 2016 while I was driving it on the highway . I pulled off the road immediately and had it towed to the dealer. After numerous attempts they told me it needed a new engine. The entire process took a month and a half. After getting my vehicle back it was driving fine until 2 months later when it shut down while I was driving again. I pulled off the main road, turned it off, and when I turned it back on it worked fine so I drove it straight to the dealer. They told me there was a recall and so I left it there overnight. After getting my vehicle returned to me for the second time, I had it for about three weeks until it broke down again. Again while I was driving it and again on a main road. I pulled off to the side, turned it off and on, and drove it straight to the dealer. They said this time it was the "throttle body" and they would need it for one to two days. Not only do I feel completely unsafe driving this car as it could shut down any minute and cause an accident, but this marks the third time having the same issue with the vehicle. It causes me to take time out of my day and miss work causing me to lose money. It is extremely inconvenient and very frustrating. I do not use this car to drive with my kids anymore as I do not trust it with their lives.

38 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/14/2017

Engine shuts off while driving (various speeds), no power, no steering for maybe a second. It has happened three times. So far, the power comes back on within a second (did not have to put in neutral or park to restart). All have happened in city driving (have not been highway driving lately).

39 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/02/2016

My Sonata could have killed or seriously injured me and every passenger that sat in it. In the first 6 months I had to replace a headlight and a tailight already and the a/c would have to be vacuumed and recharged which was about a $250 job. Fixed. In September I noticed my steering column would make an awful racket when driving over nearly anything on the road. I was shocked when I discovered there were six open recalls dating back to at least 2014. These ranged from faulty door handles to metal shavings in the oil that could cause stalling and/or dangerous sudden shutting off of the vehicle. October 5th I took the car to crain Hyundai of bentonville, in bentonville, ar. After 5 hours, they said I was good to go on the recalls and after $300 the coupler was fixed. Fast forward to December 2nd, 2016. Earlier in the day, while driving, I noticed my dashboard lights getting lighter and darker. At about 6pm that evening my boyfriend noticed the car making a "knocking" noise so he pulled over to check the oil and waited an hour and a half before someone could bring him some, giving the car plenty of time to cool and be good to go. He got going down the road only at about 25mph and got about 500 yards when the car made a "whoosh" sound and the engine shut off. He coasted into a driveway and minutes later the car was in flames. After unloading a fire extinguisher, it took the fire department cutting open the trunk to completely drown out the fire. It is now February 26th, 2017, I called Hyundai claims on December 3rd and have been waiting on the results of their investigation since. They have had the findings from the inspector for 6 weeks now and still no answer. I strongly urge everyone I know to do their research before buying anything with a Hyundai motor America emblem.

40 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/23/2016

Car stalled and engine shut down while trying to cross over a 4 lane highway came within 5 feet of a major collision with 2 approaching vehicles there is also another issue with the steering column. Hyundai chose to use a plastic bushing in the steering column that has completely failed at 65000 miles. The dealerships, 2 separate ones, state that this is not covered by the multiple other recalls with the steering. The bushing is hard plastic, about the size of a nickel and costs 2. 00 at the dealership. But they want 300. 00 labor to install it.

41 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/18/2016

I purchased my vehicle 1/21/15 certified pre-owned w/ 39,011 4/10/15 as I was driving on a town road doing approximately 45 mph, the vehicle shut off on me and turned itself back immediately. The heat was not on prior to the shutdown, but when the car turned back on, the blowers came on full blast. I explained to the dealer it was like my car was possessed. Mechanic only tested the battery at this time, battery is fine, cause is unknown. 8/3/15 engine seized with while driving approximately 60 on a state highway. Engine was replaced and later a recall was announced by the manufacturer. 9/18/16 vehicle shut off again while driving on an interstate doing approximately 80 mph while switching lanes. Lost power steering briefly and the vehicle came right back on, all lights illuminated on the dash, radio came back on blasting (was not like that prior to shutting off). Maybe it was a coincidence or not, but the second I turned my left turn signal on, is when the vehicle shut off. It came back on maybe 3 seconds later. Original dealership claimed a loose connection with the battery caused it, however, they did no further testing or investigating. It is currently at another Hyundai dealership getting assessed. From 2/20/15 until present, I have also been experiencing the controls on the steering wheel not functioning properly: ex. The mode button will mute the volume, the channel changer and volume will start making calls on my bluetooth call log or activate the voice controls. Volume will sometimes changes the channel or will increase instead of decrease and vice versa. Sometimes the channel changer will control the volume or mode, they do what they want to when they want to. Cruise control is inoperable most of the time. I have multiple videos and have shown the mechanics, but they claim to never be able to duplicate the problem. Cause, still unknown.

42 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/09/2016

While driving at 55mph the engine just shut off. Was able to restart, but had an internal noise. Had it taken to garage to be told the wrist pin broke on cylinder 1 causing internal damage and engine would need replaced at a cost of about $4500 for a used engine. Have 129000 mile which are 65% all highway miles. Hyundai sent notice of internal engine issues right after the car hit 120000 miles. Interesting timing. Recommend NHTSA force Hyundai to make these issue right with owners.

43 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/21/2016

I received a recall notice in the mail last year. Finally, in February 2016, Hyundai had a fix for the manufacturer's alleged metal debris that was getting into the engine. The car was serviced and determined all was well. Today, June 21, 2016, the car stalled while leaving for work. I restarted the car successfully; however, milliseconds later, the engine shut off. This kept happening every time I restarted the car. The car had to be towed to the dealership. After a few quotes, ranging from $500 to $1600+, and the Hyundai dealer advising that the oil control valve needed to be replaced -- that "it had an extra hole in it that was not from the manufacturer". They also advised that after replacing this valve, the issue still may not be resolved. Additional repairs and labor would need to be done -- at my expense. I inquired if it had to do anything with the recent recall (mentioned above). She advised , 'no'. I find it very hard to believe that these two incidents or issues are unrelated. After reading about the many Sonata owners that have had engine trouble, I'm afraid to even drive this car anymore.

44 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/29/2016

As I was driving on the 405 freeway the car shut off. I was able to make it off the freeway but the car would not start again. After having it towed to my mechanic, he said it has something to do with the engine. I looked up the recalls for this car and see this is a problem others have had. Is there anything I can do to fix or get another car?.

45 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/08/2015

2015 Sonata limited, engine eats all the oil within 2 weeks and no check oil light comes on. Now my car wont start, only thing that happens when I try to start it is the dash lights come on like its ready but then just shuts off. Now I dont know what to do and need or only car. 7 weeks till the baby comes. . . .

46 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/15/2015

I bought a 2015 Hyundai Sonata eco on Aug 30, 2015 and shortly after purchase low tire pressure light and display came on while driving 65 mph indicating that the rear drive wheel was at 9psi. I pulled over on the side of the road and inspected tire and the tire had a normal feel. Drove for 10 mins and tire pressure went back up to 35 psi. On 11/15 the battery and oil light came on while the vehicle was in drive and immediately following the lights the engine shut off. I sat in the middle of the road and had to restart my vehicle and then drove it to the dealership. The dealership says, "2691 performed all system fault code search and TSB search. No fault codes stored at this time and no related tsbs for customer concern as described. " the dealership later found a warning saying to reprogram the sensor and reprogrammed the sensor as the "fix". I opened a case with Hyundai and the results of the case was to obtain a print out of the error codes (which is showing none) and to file a complaint with the bbb if I wasn't satisfied with the outcome. I am concerned that my vehicle is not properly recording issues that my vehicle encounters like my engine shutting off. The mechanics at the dealership said that error codes are thrown usually when the sensors go bad. I am concerned for my safety in a vehicle that Hyundai will not fix solely because there are no error codes on file. I believe that the error codes that should be in this report to show the engine shutting off are not being recorded properly. Hyundai will not do anything to investigate my issue unless they see a code so until a code is thrown and recorded properly I am left with a vehicle that is unsafe and is not performing correctly.

47 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/22/2015

Engine shuts off while driving resulting in two minor accidents/off/road incidents, battery (which has tested in excellent condition) needs to be jump started 4-5 times a week, sometimes more. Radio, charging ports, and steering wheel controls are not currently working, lights inside car flash, headlights become locked on, every single function in car has ended twice locking me out completely. These incidents have happened on many different dates and the dealer will not help us, but I am entering the date of the last incident below.

48 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

Engine seized without any warnings (as Hyundai states we would have) while driving approximately 73-75 mph. Was accelerating to move from left lane to right in order to exit highway during rush hour traffic on NJ 78 west. Without warning all lights came on and engine shut down. Paying to have a used engine installed with a 1 year warranty. Dealership says Hyundai will not replace our engine for free because we were over the wsrrsnty period.

49 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/05/2015

My wife was driving to work connecting from route 80 to route 206 then car just cuts off, no lights , no noise just die's out. I had the car towed to dealer and they told us that engine seized, I asked why this would happen because this could have caused an accident and put my wife's life in danger that a car can just shut down with no prior warning lights. Dealer told me I would have to pay to take apart engine to find out exactly what happened to engine even though I maintenance this car approximately every 2 months and the car had highway miles. I looked online and found out other customers had this problem and they say it's a engine defect and Hyundai will not pay to fix.

50 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/29/2015

My children were driving and stopped at a light. When the light changed, my son pressed the accelerator and the car didn't move. It shut off. When he attempted to start it, nothing happened. No lights ever came on on the dashboard. Had the car towed to pohanka Hyundai in capital heights, MD and was told that the engine was locked up and that it was not covered under warranty because I was the second owner and it would cost me $5774,. 88 to have it replaced with a rebuilt engine. I also purchased an additional warranty which I thought was bumper to bumper when I purchased the car in January 2014.

51 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/18/2015

While driving the steering column began making a strande grinding type of noise. This is heard whenever the steering wheel is turned at any speed. The vehicle feels like there is no power steering. I have been told that the coupling, the steering gear system was bad and the entire steering column needs to be changed. This is a safety issue. The dealer wants $1400. This is ludicrous! the coupling is only $8-10. What is really going on with Hyundai? I just recently had to replace the engine because it just shut down when making a turn. The engine had seized. This is also an issue with 2011 Sonata!!!!.

52 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/19/2015

My engine seized with no warning. I was travelling downhill and the motor just shutoff. Had the vehicle towed to the dealer who notified me that the engine was seized. This is a huge safety concern as it could have happened in the middle of traffic.

53 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/16/2015

I purchased my Hyundai Sonata on 1/05/2015 with only 6 miles from sheehy Hyundai of waldor in maryland after 11 days of purchase on January 16 2015 at approximately 5:45 pm (rush hour in the DC metro area) my Sonata came to an abrupt stop without any warning signs on the highway in middle lane which is very dangerous and very scary and put me in a very vulnerable position. The engine shut off, I was unable to steer out the way of traffic and the brakes locked up and I was unable to do anything while in the middle of the rush hour traffic. I was a sitting duck waiting to get smashed by a pickup truck directly in the back of me. Thank my god nothing happened. I was unable to use the sos and bluelink emergency features that is equipped came with 3 months free activation in this vehicle. I had to personally call via my cell phone and await police assistance which was 10 minutes still in the middle of the highway and after the assistance of the police we were only then able to push the vehicle to the shoulder of the highway. The bluelink customer service did very poorly in responding after all this emergency situation and to make it worse they did not provide a tow until 1. 45 minutes after, then commence to justify this long period by stating its "Friday and the normal time is 2 hours or more". Therefore, I am pleading to sheehy dealership and Hyundai corporation along with anyone else that can assist me to ensure that I have a new replacement vehicle. I am getting nowhere with sheehy dealership in reference to a new replacement vehicle. The vehicle is currently at sheehy service department and they are still not able to figure out the problem. Even though they might be able to fix the vehicle I will not feel safe driving the same vehicle after this very hazardous incident.

55 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/19/2014

On August 18, 2015 I was siting at a stop light and my car just shut off, I waited a few seconds and it started back up again, I took it to cocoa Hyundai they ran every test called me and told me that they could not find nothing wrong with my vehicle. On September 21 I was driving home from work my car just died it started jerking and the engine light and skid light came on I waited and it restarted it moved maybe about an inch or so and shut down again, I pulled to the side of the road and let it sit and it restarted I proceed to take it to cocoa Hyundai and told them that this is the (2) second time I have had this problem they kept the car ran every test called the Hyundai tech and they proceeded to inform me that they could not find anything wrong with this car. So I said of I guess this is normal for a 2015 to do this, I am in fear of driving this vehicle because I'm not sure when or where it will shut down. Something is seriously wrong with this vehicle and it is putting my life in danger. . .

56 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

While driving in a heavy rain the engine begin missing and slowing down. Because of the rain traffic was running at about 25 mph. The engine shut off and I drifted onto the shoulder of the highway (I 95). After a few attempts the engine restarted , but was still missing badly I could only get to approx. 20mph. Each time I stopped the engine would stop. Using the shoulder of the road we were able to make it home. The next morning I tried to start the car but it would not. I open the hood just to see if there was anything visibly wrong. I checked the air filter and find that it was full of water. With wet filter out and the water removed from the filter housing the car runs with out a problem. I can't locate where the air intake is to see if there is part missing etc. This is the fourth time this has happen. The dealers answer for this problem "don't drive in heavy rain".

58 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/17/2013

My 2010 Hyundai Sonata completely shut down on me 2-times in less than 5-minutes times while I was driving today. I was on my way to enter the expressway. The power steering and everything just shut down. My car just made a sudden stop. Thank god I had not entered the expressway and took the side streets home. I feel that this is a real safety hazard to myself, the passengers riding with me as well as other drivers, passengers and families on the road. My vehicle has 53,215 miles, there is no way this should be happening. If this is happening to my vehicle, I know it's occurring in other Sonata's and other Hyundai vehicles base on what I see in online entries on the 2010 Hyundai Sonata and Hyundai vehicles. Manufactures must be held accountable for the defected products place on the market. I know that I'm a small voice against a large corporation, but if you take the time to investigate I know that my claim will be validated. I hope and pray that something is done about this before we are dealing with injuries or fatalities. I am a frustrated and unhappy Hyundai Sonata owner, looking for Hyundai to put safety first!.

59 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

As I was driving to make a turn the car shut down without warning. It has happened two other times sine this first incident. Car shut down as I was going various speeds. The cranking of the ignition is also a problem. I first reported this to the dealer in 2011. It cranks as if it is about to die then it has eventually caught and turned on. This is an ongoing issue. Since it doesn't show a code or act up when I am in for service they do nothing for me.

60 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/31/2011

Loss of power, car shuts down, 'check charging system' alarm/chime with alarm symbols on dash display for battery, check engine and wrench icons. Have to pull off the highway somehow (in midst of heavy traffic) to shut car completely off and restart. On third incident (one day after second), car would not restart for 10 minutes and check engine icon remained lit. Every incident has been while traveling at high rate of speed in commuter highway traffic. Very frightening and dangerous experience for driver and safety hazard to others when it occurs.

62 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2000 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/06/2005

I have made five trips to the dealer with the same problem with my 2000 Hyundai Sonata which was purchased from allen turner Hyundai in pensacola, FL and is serviced by them due to it is still in warranty. My car makes a loud clonking sound and then stops and all power goes off. This happens normally when I go over 30-40 mph and has happened while driving 70 on the interstate and almost caused me to wreck on a bridge because I had no shoulder to go off on and cars almost slammed into the back of me. After it shuts down, it takes anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour to start again. It turns over but will not start after this happens. As said I have taken this 5 times to the dealer, this last time they kept it 5 days and found nothing. I had them drive it home. Prior they told me it was a computer error and was fixed, at first they said it was the computer board but then said the boss said it was just "bad battery cables. " and cleaned off the cables. I had a new battery put in. They told me it was the air filter had jumped off the track and just needed put back on. The last 2 times they said the computer read nothing. I asked them about the gas line or water in the gas and they said they check all this, checked crank sensor, changed mass air flow sensor, "bad connection", tightened cable ends per tech line. The last time the invoice just tells me the computer reads ok. I had them drive it for 5 days for 218 miles but it did not reproduce per tech. I am going to get killed in this car and they honestly just don't take it seriously. I am a female and drive by myself alot and it scares me to lose control of my vehicle and for this to happen at night. I just can't seem to get the dealership to take it seriously. Help me.

63 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 1999 Hyundai Sonata

Drove at 55mph on gsp in NJ on Tuesday 10-23-01. Car shut off, stalled in the middle of very busy fast moving highway. My emergency flashers did not even go on. Crying and screaming and waving my arms for people to go around me I prayed I wouldn't get killed, amazingly I did not get hit, lots of brakes screeching (tires) and people driving on shoulder at aprx 55-60 trying to avoid hitting me. Crying and screaming I made it somehow to the narrow shoulder next to the guardrail and prayed. Police did not show up when I called 911, only tow truck driver. Problems with this car too numerous to mention. I cannot even get Hyundai corp to call me back. They do not care. They do not care. They do not care. This car was purchased new. Now I wonder if the dealer sold me a used lemon. I cannot understand why I am having so many problems with a car which does not even have 30,000 miles. I am a very cautious driver. Please check my driving history (file) please help me please help me please help me. My eyes are tired from crying. I cannot handle this. Dealer has my car now. Too tired and too sick to go on. Please help me. Thank you for whatever you may/can do!.
