Hyundai Sonata owners have reported 133 problems related to headlights (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Sonata based on all problems reported for the Sonata.
I have had my car about a year now and I have had to replace the rear light bulbs 3-4 times because they keep burning out. It will eventually lead to a fire with this hazard. The bulb housing is burnt inside and the bulbs were stuck in there from being burnt. Also, the headlights are so dim and short out. I have to use my lights on bright and they still are dim. There needs to be a recall for this for the 2014 Hyundai Sonata before it causes a fire. I am only commenting because I read the exact same thing as my car has been doing and figured if enough people complained then they would realize this is hazardous. This has happened about 3-4 times and I am picking the date below for the last incident. Also, it only has a yes or no under was there a fire. I would have picked almost due to the burnt housing. I just wanted to point that out.

The low beam headlights illuminate an area up to about 1 telephone pole in front of the vehicle (approximately 100 feet). When driving at normal highway speeds at night, I cannot see far enough ahead to operate the vehicle safely. It is only when the auto high beams turn on that the road ahead is sufficiently illuminated. I contacted the dealer who checked out the headlights and was told that everything was according to Hyundai specifications.

My headlights in my 2015 Hyundai Sonata limited randomly shut off while driving. I do not know the cause. It began around 30k miles. I have taken the car to the dealership multiple times for this issue. Dealership claims that they cannot diagnose since the issue does not occur while stationary. The headlights will turn off for about 4 to 45 seconds, anywhere from 0 - 6 times in a 25 minute period while driving. This does not necessarily affect day time driving however, is a serious issue during night time driving.

I purchased the 2018 Hyundai Sonata 2. 0t on 8/27/18. After we were able to experience different driving conditions and situations, my husband and I noticed that (1) at night, while driving on the highway, the windshield appeared very dark as if it was heavily tinted, and making it difficult to see the road. (2) when driving on highway or road, with normal beam headlights, we noticed that the line of demarcation from headlight to dark road was very close to the front of the car. The reason given by the maintenance dept was that this was so cars in front wouldn't be blinded by the headlight. To us, it seemed that the headlights were aimed too low. I should be able to see more than 20 feet in front of my car. We were told that nothing could be done. Also, when making a turn, the area opposite the direction of the turn is completely dark because of the way the headlights work on a turn. This is extremely dangerous-should someone decide to walk there or if there is an animal, I will not be able to see anything. Again I was told there was nothing they could do. (3) my husband put rain-x on all the windows of the car. It worked on every window except the windshield. We thought there was some sort of coating placed by the manufacturer. I was told no there was not. They could not understand why the rain-x didn't take. They told me that they spent quite a bit of time "scraping the windshield", but nothing came off. We still do not know why it should do that. (4) I noticed. Whether I was driving in Smart or sport mode, their is an annoying hesitation when I step on the gas. When the stoplight turns green, it takes several seconds before the car is able to move at normal speed. We were told that they received lots of complaints about that, but no offer for a fix.

The left rear light keeps burning out very quickly. The housing has had to be replaced and the bulb was difficult to take out, like it was melting to the housing. The bulb looked burnt. Also, both my headlights will not turn on normally, I have to turn on my bright lights in order to have any lights at all, and when I turn on my blinkers, the lights turn off and I have to quickly adjust to turn them back on. It if very dangerous! there seems to be a short in the wiring because the left rear light, the back license plate light, the washer fluid button, and the front lights do not work properly. They all seem to have quit working or intermittently quit working at the same time. I have gotten stopped by the police a few times and given warnings because of my dim or randomly non-working lights. This is extremely dangerous and terribly frustrating.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving various speeds, the driver side headlight failed to work. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the headlight needed to be replaced. The contact called red mccombs Hyundai (4800 NW loop 410, san antonio, TX 78229, (210) 593-3658) and notified them of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 120,000.

The left rear light where I place the bulb is burned out. The housing of where the bulb goes has to be replaced. Also, both headlights where I replace the bulb has burned out and needs to be replaced. There is a shortage in the wiring in the rear lights.
Headlight lens has a projection in the middle of the lens that interferes with and is very distracting to the lighted field of vision. Hyundai mechanics have tiold me they've gotten many complaints from drivers, but Hyundai refuses to correct it. I filed a formal complaint with Hyundai, and they gave a very dubious and weak excuse for the defect. They responded in writing to me "the black half-moon triangular image is designed to prevent glare to the vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Hyundai motor America is unable to replace the headlamp assembly for concerns related to the half-moon/triangular shadow. " this response defies logic and it appears to be an after the fact fabricated response so that they don't have to correct the design flaw. This flaw is obviously only observable during night driving.
The projected angle of the headlights do not project out far enough when driving this vehicle. The headlights only project out one vehicle in front of the driver, leaving a vast amount of darkness in front of the driver in the Hyundai Sonata. This is a safety hazard for the owner of this vehicle.
Tl the contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. While driving at night, the headlights failed to produce adequate lighting. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000. The VIN was not available.

First issue occurred in my job's parking lot ,as I tried to crank my car it made a roaring start and didn't want to stay on. Cut the car off, checked oil. There was barely any on the stick (just got an oil change on 09/21/18 at Hyundai dealership). Added 2 qts had mom drive to dealership per serviceman request. They changed my oil and informed my mom of an ongoing issue. Well get off headed home, on regular county road headlights flashed off and on alone with radio console. Pulled over lights stayed on, but I notice taillight that has been replaced multiple times over the last couple months was out again. Tried to replace it and the wire was hot and bulb wouldn't come out. So, I decided to wait till I get home. But now I'm waiting on the side of the road because my engine light is on.

The low beam headlights will not come on even after replacing the bulbs and fuses. The a/c stopped working. Again, the fuses were replaced and all connections are right. There's a vibration coming from the passenger side front wheel. It starts at 70 m. P. H and gets worse as speed increases. Roaring the tires did not help. It sounds like a old worn out truck coming from the drivers side strut housing.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 20 mph, while using the high-beam headlights, the headlights became inoperable. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated she continued to experience the failure. The vehicle was taken to bentley Hyundai located at 3805 university dr, huntsville, al 35816, (256) 713-0505, where the dealer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
Interior and exterior lights flickering in and out. Dangerous at night because the headlights flickering out, when in motion.
The headlights on my 2018 Hyundai Sonata show two black notches and a black line about 30 feet in front of the car in low light conditions. It is very distracting and dangerous as these shadows dart across your path as you make turns or go up hills. Hyundai service could see the notches, but said "the system is working within specifications at this time". Something needs to be done before someone is killed because of these unsafe lights.
When driving at night with low beam headlights there is very distinct shadows in front of car. It is very distracting and Hyundai TSB 18-be-003 says it is normal with led and instructs dealers to not try adjustment.
Dim headlights are very weak, not aimed correctly or poor design. Not enough candle power to see dividing lines on highway. With bright lights things are good. I have talked with 3 other people who have Sonata's, different year models, they have the same complaint. Not safe! I would like to know how this high safety item passed the ntsb!!!!.
The headlights point at the ground less than 30 feet in front of the car. The headlights are not level and even. Left headlamp is brighter than the right headlamp I must use high beams to see at night. Dealership states they cannot adjust the headlight levels or 'replicate' the problem. . . It can be see by driving up to a wall with lights on. Three other people/friends replicate the issue during night time driving without issue.
There is a black line across the road with two bumps in it when you are driving at night. It also seems that there is limited field of vision compared to my other car. Also the headlights fog up inside occasionally. Brought it in to dealer, they said nothing is wrong. It occurs when driving the car, when it is stationary you can see the black bumps when shining the lights against a wall.
On the 2017 Hyundai Sonata limited (not the base or sport models), the enclosure surrounding the light unit has a piece at the top that casts a shadow on the street that is distracting to the driver and impairs visibility. The shadow appears to look like a tab and casts a shadow on the left hand lane line that makes visibility hard and is a safety concern. We have been informed by the dealership that we took it to that ordered a replacement headlight unit that it appears to be an issue with the design that only appears to impact to the limited models of the Sonata. . Headlights went out while driving 70mph on interstate 126.
Headlights and inside dash lights turn off for no reason while driving serious problem! it has happened on several ovcasions.
Headlights(low beam) on limted model has a dark line and two notches. Difficult to see properly at night.
Both headlights on my Hyundai went out at the same time. I was told it would cost $1200 to replace both. It could have been much worse if I was on the road and they went out. This is quite expensive. It seems to me this is a safety issue. Was there a recall on this problem? I noticed it as my wife was pulling out of the garage. I don't know how long they were not working.
The headlights on my 2018 Hyundai Sonata limited have condensation in them. It has been there from the day I bought the car on 10/1/18. That day the dealership took pictures to send to Hyundai and 1 month later replaced the headlights. But the new headlights were worse than the original and the day after they were installed I returned to the dealership where the parts manager took more pictures for Hyundai. I spoke with someone from Hyundai directly who is my contact regarding this problem. I was advised Hyundai is trying to figure out the problem and while they do I am still waiting for new headlights. I have found other cars in my area with the same problem. At night the moisture covers a good portion of the glass giving a distortion to the projected headlight beam. I feel this is a safety issue not just during good weather, but especially in bad weather.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. While the vehicle was stationary and while driving various speeds, the passenger side air bag indicator illuminated and remained lit. In addition, the low beam headlights became misaligned to the left and failed to illuminate the full view of the road ahead. Downey Hyundai (7550 firestone blvd, downey, California 90241, (562) 314-4331) was made aware of the air bag indicator failure and disconnected the passenger side air bag. The dealer stated that the passenger side air bag needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Keyes mission hills Hyundai (10240 sepulveda blvd, mission hills, California 91345) was made aware of the headlamp lighting failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and stated that parts and labor would not be covered per NHTSA campaign number: 08e021000 (exterior lighting) in regards to the headlights. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign numbers: 08v161000 (air bags) and 08e021000 (exterior lighting) as potential causes of the failures. The failure mileage was 121,605.

The headlights and breaklights on thw passenger side of vehicle keep blowing. I have changed them out several times and need to change my break light out again now. It is getting to be an expensive problem.
While driving with high beams on when I signal a turn the headlights go out for a few seconds before turning back on. Very dangerous when initiating a turn on country roads with no street lights and deep ditches on all four corners. This is a recurring problem and not a one time incident.
Hard shifts when in sport mode and when it doesn't do a hard shift the vehicle will shut off on the highway causing the headlights and power steering to not fiction cause a possible crash have to stop and put in park to restart engine.

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The headlight and instrumental panel lights flickered abruptly causing the engine not to start up. The vehicle was not taken to a local mechanic or dealer to have diagnostic performed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 63,167.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 40 mph, the low beam headlights failed to illuminate bright enough to view far distances. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted at 844-462-5557 and stated that they were not aware of the failure. The manufacturer provided case number: 105-09466. The failure mileage was 1,700.
Low beam headlights stopped working without warning while driving vehicle in rural area. Was not noticed initially because was driving on well traveled road (2 lanes, main artery of city) with other vehicles and their lights illuminated the road way. However, when on a less traveled road that is when unable to see highway or surrounding areas. As a result, this forced me to momentarily pull off the highway. The high beam fortunately was working so utilized for remainder of drive home. Posed potential risks - driving for a while with no lights on, turns, when getting back on the road, blinding cars in the opposite direction, making a u-turn to turn into my housing area on a multi-lane highway at 10:00 pm as this was discovered in the evening . It is unclear if this was associated with the sporadic clicking noise heard for some time which appears to originate from the front area of the car. The sound can be heard on the inside of the car and is not audible when standing outside. Reported sporadic noise on several occasions to dealership for repair. Was informed that they didn't know where the sound was coming from but it did not appear to effect the car; maybe a snake (actually told by dealership). No recall, or could not duplicate sound and therefore unable to address ticking.
The passenger side headlights would flicker and the dash lights too. Now the passenger headlights will not come on at all. I have replaced both the low and high beam bulbs and the lights will still not work. I paid over 2,000 for a warranty when I bought the car. The dealer told me that it was a bumper to bumper warranty. But that was a lie, the vehicle is unsafe to drive at night.
