4 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/23/2017

The issue is the tensioner for the timing chain. The tensioner failed, causing a very expensive engine repair. There is a recall on the 6 cyl tensioner, but not the 4 cyl which I have. My research says the same tensioners were used for both engines. It failed at 169,000. It was stationary in a parking lot when it failed to start. It would turnover but would not catch. I have all the damaged parts saved by the mechanic. If I was driving when it failed, it would have not only blown the engine but most likely would have stopped my car on whatever road I was driving on, including an expressway.

5 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/17/2015

First, this is my 2nd complaint I've filed. My car has been repaired many times for recalls (one is being done currently for the second time) and other warranty repairs. This is the list so far: idler pully, tensioner arm and belt, steering column (which broke while driving after I had to get 4 new tires and 4-wheel alignment (24000 miles) that they said I had to get), premature starter failure, short block, leather around gear shifter wore hole in it, and my car has now been in the service dept. Since Dec. 17th because the engine failed again. They ordered a long block for it but Hyundai motors America cannot keep up with getting the engines manufactured and sent to all the dealerships fast enough for the recall. I am now the 12th car down on the list. I still have another outstanding recall for the brake stop pad, and I noticed recently the rearview mirror is faded in spots (dark worn areas). I contacted Hyundai motor America public relations hotline. It took them 2 weeks to get back to me. The man that called me asked for information from me, he called the dealership, and then sent me a letter stating they would only reimburse me a portion of my repairs I had to pay for. In the letter, also was a release of liability for me to sign. That's not going to happen!!!! the release would have made them not liable to past or any future situations, including death. How stupid do they really think we are? they've had well beyond an acceptable amount of time to take care of these recalls. It's time to buy the vehicles back and rebuild their image. If not, there will be more recalls or events that could lead to death. Holding them accountable is the only acceptable way to handle this. People are still out there driving unsafe vehicles!!.

7 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/16/2014

When vehicle is started from a cold start, there is a noticeable rattle coming from engine that lasts about 3-7 seconds. Also while accelerating, the rattle is persistent with throttle input. I was told that the problem is the timing chain tensioner and that the Hyundai Sonatas have defective timing chain tensioners. I went to the Hyundai dealership and they quoted me $1,100 to fix the problem and made me aware that there was a TSB but not a recall on the part even though there is a revised tensioner. This is a ongoing issue and a hazard because the chain could have to much slack and cause the the timing to be off and future damage for the engine.

8 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/13/2013

Urgent. 1) defective engine per Hyundai's admission. I will not accept a software 'bandaid' approach to patch to my main ecm to resolve this problem. I did go in to sheppard motors to get this bandaid applied to my car. This is a bandaid, and shame on Hyundai. My engine is warrantied through July 2023. I've been around. 2) my car is brand new, with only 27,400 miles on her 3) the latest recall on both the low and high pressure fuel line/ hoses etc. Should I wait for a fire here? dear NHTSA: please look up all of the recalls and extended warranties on my vehicle. Unacceptable to me. I believe that no quality control whatsoever was practiced and applied on the factory production lines. Hyundai focus -- big money. Pressuring factory workers to put in any part they can find. I have some stories here about the audio system on my car that will absolutely blow your collective minds. I've been around. 4) Hyundai long since sent me extended warranties on a) the entire engine b) brake pedal stopper c) front coil springs d) seat belt tensioners (drivers tensioner was already replaced, and yet, it still does not retract completely when exiting the vehicle pray tell, what gives Hyundai? new car here. My greatest concerns about this new car that I paid for in cash -- and was defrauded in that process as well -- I could have bought a Honda for much less, and never have any problems. I am rather frustrated here and pray for government advocacy and intervention. Thank you so very much. #1 I need a brand new motor, the whole motor, which has been thoroughly quality control tested and proven, and which has been completely tested. My motor is very, very noisy. So, do I wait for the rod bearings to fail completely and stall out my car, causing a fatal crash? #2 I need both my low and high pressure fuel lines and hoses, etc. Replaced.

Case number 8404334 : hi my name is desiret canales I purchased a car on September of 2010 not even a year later started to hear knocking in the engine in 2012. Took the car to mid island- Hyundai in centereach NY 11720 was told that it was due to "lack of maintenance" that the "short block , gaskets tensioners" needed to be replaced. Dealer didn't not give loaner car had to wait 3 months for repairs to be done in the amount of 3889. 43. Then in oct of the same year while on a trip same knocking noise was heard then engine stopped running. Had the car towed to a dealer in canada, dealer told us that it was engine failure. We told them that according to mid island Hyundai we got a "new engine". Repair were made on the car no charge, had to return to new your in a retail car that was was paid out of pocket. Last month we receive a letter stating that car is being recalled do to the "short block" and other issues with the engine. Letter states that if knocking noise was hear coming form the engine to immediately take it to be serviced. I'm sending this compliant letter so I could be reimburse the full amount of the previous repair done in 2012 of 3889. 43. Do to the fact that it wasn't my "lack of maintenance" but do to poor manufacturing of Hyundai. Spoke to a rep regarding this issue, she gave me this case number 8404334. A certified mechanic inspected the vehicle and diagnosed that the timing chain tensioner needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 46,000 and the current mileage was 50,000.

11 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

On startup when cold, engine makes knocking or tapping noise. Noise goes away after +/- 30 seconds. I'm told it's a timing chain tensioner, a known problem in these 3. 3 v-6 engines, but Hyundai will not recall them. The reason, I'm told, is that the engine must almost be completely removed from the car for repair.

12 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/25/2006

This complaint applies to a 2007 Hyundai Sonata limited (no option for 2007 was available in drop down menu) (issue 1) at or around the initial few days after taking delivery I began to notice abrupt vibration and shaking coming from the steering wheel; substantial enough to feel in the seat. Vehicle was taken back to dealership on 3 separate occasions to remedy the problem but they reported that they were unable to duplicate the problem and reported the vehicle to be in manufacturer specification. Nonetheless, dealer attempted wheel balance and radial force balance as a "good will gesture. " problem is now more articulated and the issue remains unresolved. (issue 2) engine emits a rattle noise similar to lifter clatter upon start and continues throughout operation; particularly in colder weather. Timing chain tensioner was replaced and one noise was resolved but the continual nature of the lifter clatter remains. Dealership and Hyundai representative reported that they were unable to duplicate the problem and the issue remains unresolved. (issue 3) fuel sloshing coming from the fuel tank. Manufacturer and dealer claims this to be normal and not a safety risk. Sound is more pronounced at or around 3/4 tank. Brought this to the attention of the dealer and the manufacturer directly and remains unresolved.
